The Missouri Compromise was very important in the United States. The compromise was made by Henry Clay in 1820. It was very important because the compromise evenly divided free states and slave states. They reached a boiling point after Missouri’s 1819 request for admission to the Union as a slave state, which would not even out the number of slave and free states. Congress made the compromise by granting Missouri’s request to be a slave state, but also admitting Maine as a free state, which balanced the number of free and slave states. The Missouri Compromise also passed an amendment that drew an imaginary line across the former Louisiana Territory, establishing a boundary between the free and slave states. The Missouri Compromise was criticized by southerners because it established the fact that Congress could make laws regarding slavery, but northerners criticized it for supporting the expansion of slavery. The United States’ population reached 10 million. The issue of slavery divided the union. Some southerners feared that slavery might be made illegal if the balance of power was in favor of the North. (words: 182)
The Missouri Compromise was written in 1820 when people argued over whether Missouri should be a slave or free state. The compromise divided America at the 36 (degree mark) 30'N parallel. Anything above the line was a free state and could not allow slavery, but anything below the line would automatically become a slave state. This compromise was important because Congress passed it to try and keep the evenness between slave states and free states. Although it kind of divided America in half, it helped the states to not argue about their equal representation in places like Congress and the House of Representatives. This compromise eventually started a debate that lasted from December 1819 to March 1820. The northerners were led by Senator Rufus King of New York and they argued that Congress had the power to prohibit slavery in a new state. Southerners believed that new states had the same freedom of action as the original thirteen and were thus free to choose slavery if they wished. To end this argument, Congress made Maine a free state and Missouri a slave state.(183)
8 facts: 1) The nations population reached 10,000,000 2) Mississippi was added as a slave state in 1817 3) James Monroe was the president 4) Illinois was added as a free state in 1818 5) Alabama was added as a slave state in 1819 6) ProSlavery worried if free states were the greater number slavery would be outnumbered 7) Missouri entered as a slave state in 1821 8) Maine entered as a free state balancing out the Free and Slave states once again
The Missouri compromise was maid because in 1820 their was an argument between the slave states and the free states. Because at this point it was even their was 11 free and 11 slave states, so wen Missouri wanted to join the U.S. Their was argument to deside if it was going to be a free os slave state. This tore the U.S. Apart, so henry clay made a compromise. And now their is a something called the 36 degree mark. 30N parallel. Any state above the line is a free state anything below the line was a slave state! (102)

Problems between those who were anti-slavery and pro-slavery began to rise in the U.S. Congress and across the country. When Missouri asked to enter the Union as a slave state, this was the final straw. The congress wanted to keep the peace so they made a two-part compromise where Missouri’s request was granted but also admitting Maine as a free state. This act also passed an amendment that drew an imaginary line across the former Louisiana Territory and established a boundary between free and slave regions that remained the law of the land until it was put away by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. The Missouri compromise was important because the Congress really did need to keep the peace because, who would want to start a war? (127)

The Missouri Compromise was very important to America during the time of the Civil War. It was a bill that separated the slave states and the free states in America. It was made in 1820 the debate lasted from December 1819 to March 1820. The debate was about if the people of the US wanted to be separated in to slave states and free states the northerners wanted to remain united but hated slavery and the southerners wanted slaves so later it was decided that they were going to be separated. It made a big change in America. It was very important.(102) 8 facts: 1. The nation’s population reached 10,000,000. 2. New states were being added. 3. The amount of slavery increased. 4. The nation was divided. 5. Mississippi was added as a slave state. 6. Illinois was added as free state. 7. Missouri would have start the civil war. 8. North strongly resisted.
The Missouri Compromise was very important. It delayed the Civil War by about 40 years. It also set the boundary of Missouri at 36 20.The Compromise also called for Maine to be a free state, and for Missouri to be a slave state. But the Southerners still weren’t satisfied because Congress could still control slavery in that territory. As you can see, the South is never satisfied. It also established a boundary between slave and free states. This remained the law until the Kansas- Nebraska act of 1854. The Northerners hated it because it allowed the spread of slavery. So the Missouri Compromise was kinda a big deal. (109)
The Missouri compromise was important because Missouri was to enter as a slave state but at the time the country was divided 11 to 11, 22 in all. It was divided like this because half of these states were slave states and the other half were free states. This created a problem when Missouri wanted to enter, because it would upset the balance, it would mean more slave states than free. This caused a disturbance in the states. Luckily Maine entered as a free state so the balance was maintained. (101)
1. population reached 10,000,000 2. new states were added almost every year 3. Issue of slavery increasingly divided the nation 4. the application for Missouri's state hood threatened to upset the balance 5. southern slave states were worried that making Missouri a free state, it would make slavery illegal 6. Missouri Compromise was thought of by Henry Clay 7. Maine was entered as a free state so the balance was maintained 8. Maine was entered in 1820
"That's not FAIR!" is a phrase that teachers, parents, and anyone mature enough would clarify as irrelevant. However, Congress didn't want any further dispute after Missouri's request to be admitted into the Union as a slave state in 1819; therefore, Missouri got her (states are "her"s, right?) wish, making the amount of slave and free states be even at a ratio of 11:11. In order to make this balanced number, Maine had to join as a free state. Also, an "imaginary line" was established across what used to be the Louisiana Territory to determine the "free and slave regions."
This compromise holds a lot of importance because it held a lot of the main elements of what started this fight between north and south. The problem was that when Senator Rufus King from NY insisted that Congress had the "power to prohibit slavery in a new state," I think that this might have encouraged Congress to use their power to promote slavery in Missouri--due to the southerners on the other side of the debate. Now the North and South are upset because the North didn't want this, and the South didn't like Congress making decisions like that.
Keep in mind! Not everyone in those territories wanted slavery to be permitted or vice versa. That's why the popular sovereignty of the KS-NB Act of 1854 was more welcomed…for those in favor of slavery. Anytime the government tried to make the people happy, it ended up tearing them apart.
All of this was necessary in a sense that something had to be done, but at the same time it drove America more apart. Nevertheless, slavery was later demolished when the civil war started, so maybe this gave us the push we needed.
