Reconstruction: A Time Of Change & Regression

Last week we took some time to examine what was happening in America after the Civil War ended. The chaos of Lincoln's assassination foreshadowed what would be a tumultuous decade of "reconstructing" the nation.

As we saw in the Crash Course video, some great gains were made in the name of racial and civil equality but were not sustained. Congress and the office of the President (Johnson, Grant and Hayes) found themselves at odds which did not help the situation at all.

Eventually, in 1877, federal troops were removed from the south and the region essentially reverted back to its pre-Civil War ways (which was good for most whites and bad for most African Americans).

For this week's blog, please visit this website and choose any ONE of the links that say "reading" in the green box. Note, there are several pages to choose from at the bottom of the site.

  1. I chose to read and write about the article title "A Day of Triumph". This article is actually taken from , 1844–1915, at the American Antiquarian Society. This text was written after the horrible destruction and death caused by the Civil War, so it is filled with strong emotion and feelings from the writer. The writer, Caroline Bartlett White is reacting very cheerfully, because she has heard the great news of the Civil War ending. The writing begins with two "Hurrah!"s, because they heard the sound of ringing bells in the early morning, and they received the announcement that General lee had surrendered his army to General Grant. She then goes on to talk about great things she now hopes for like justice and freedom. Reading this article shows me how people were hopeful for the Reconstruction Era. It displays the great emotion of someone who is ready for a new beginning after the war, and she seems to be hopeful that the Reconstruction Era will be just that. Unfortunately, some steps forward made in the Reconstruction Era had eventually reverted back to how things were pre-Civil War. Meaning bad situations for most of the African Americans again. In conclusion, I learned that although the Reconstruction Era was not exactly a success, people were still very hopeful at the start. (Word Count: 224)

  3. I chose to read the article a Day of Triumph because I wanted to hear something good about this war for once. The writer is expressing her feelings about how she feels about the war now that it’s over. She sees it as a new beginning. However all the war did was take the shackles off the African American's feet. It did not change the feelings different races had toward each other. Whites and Blacks still didn’t get along. Which after 200 years or so of slavery and then it just ends is just weird. Now Mrs.Caroline Bartlett White was so flabbergasted at the out come of the war she actually put “Hoorah!” in her article. She showed us what it felt like to be a bystandered of the war. Just to watch and hope that your side wins. Except these sides determined the future of our country. We could feel how Mrs. Caroline felt about winning the war after the bells had rung and was told that General Lee had surrendered the war to Ulysses S. Grant. Even though the country hadn’t changed much since the war they still saw as a new beginning for their country and hope for a future. ( Word Count 202).

  4. I read the interesting article called Louisiana White League Platform. I learned that this horrible group called the white league was allied with the Democratic Party. The white league was known for their violence against black and white Republicans during 1874 and 1875 during the Reconstruction Era. I think that the purpose of all this violence that this Louisiana group caused against these innocent people they destroyed was to wipe out the Republican Party so the Democratic Party could have control of the United States but that is just my opinion. They caused this violence in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi. This article said that “The White League was a paramilitary group.” I don’t totally understand why this military group the White league would be causing this violence against people that were innocent and trying their best to do what they felt was right to do. It’s sad to hear about all this violence and this article has caused me to think about how important the Reconstruction Era was in this country’s history. After reading this interesting article has given me an entire different perspective of the Reconstruction Era and it has also changed my entire thoughts about the Reconstruction Era. (202 Words)

  5. I chose to read, “A Black Republican Leader Asks for Protection”. Lewis McGee is wanted by people for being a major leader in the Balton Republican club. He have people looking for him everywhere and it's pretty hard for him to hide. If he gets caught he will get killed so he have to stay on the move. He need help because he’s black and he needs protection. He has food and cotton of his own that he can't tend to on his own. I read this because the title stuck out to me because there was a black person leading something which is a little weird around this time. This showed me during the Reconstruction Era there were no sympathy to blacks no matter what was going on. They had people looking everywhere for him and he didn't have no one to protect him. I wonder if he have his own land because he says he have cotton and corn somewhere, but i wonder if i have been taken or not. Lastly, i question who he wrote this too and why this specific person or group. This showed me durning this time period many people had to flee and hide and was very scared. (205)

  6. I chose to read “A Day Of Triumph.” The reason I selected this article is because I have only read about the terrible things that the Reconstruction Era brought over the country, but I have not read about when it finally came to an end. In the article“A Day Of Triumph” a lady wrote her joyful reaction about the war ending. Her name is Caroline White. She is from Brookline, Massachusetts.
It’s Monday, April 10, 1865.Ms. White starts out her newsletter very ebullient. She explains that bells are ringing announcing that General Lee and his whole army have surrendered to General Grant. Ms. White gets into detail in how the week before there was suffering unable to be described there had been many deaths caused by the Civil War. Over all Ms. White stays very positive and happy. She sees the countries triumph as a new beginning. Ms. White then goes on thanking the Lord and giving him the credit for the country’s new beginning. I thought that was different. The reason I thought that was different is because usually people just give the credit to themselves or others. So I thought that was excellent on her part. Last but not least Ms. White finishes her letter expressing that the country ought to know what Patriotism means. She hopes for Justice and Freedom. Her wish is that all people of every color will be the loved Emblem of Liberty.I enjoyed reading Ms. White’s letter about the end of the Civil War. She explains her emotions very well and she gives her points of view. Ms. White was one of many that was exceedingly joyful for the end of the Civil War.
The Reconstruction Era was very hard on people, I was imagining that the people would be very happy for its ending, but I would have never imagined that they would be as joyful as they were. It was a new beginning.

  7. I chose to read “A Day of Triumph”. I chose this article because it seemed very hopeful and we don’t always get all the details about the happiness of war ending; we tend to focus on the devastation after a war and during a war.
On Monday, April 10, 1865 a letter was written by Caroline Bartlett White and in this letter she happily rejoices that the war has ended and the whole army had surrendered themselves to general Grant. She talks a lot about how grateful and thankful to the Lord, she truly is. She says because of God, children can grow up with big and great desires. She claims that they will have a celebration of some kind because that is what should happen in these situations. In a way this was an exciting new start for many people. She expresses how distraught the war really made people and now that it is over it would be crazy to just sit there in silence. She truly believes everybody should be up celebrating. April 9th was claimed to be and truly is a day to remember. This whole topic just shows the new hope that the people have found, especially Caroline Bartlett White.

  8. “Collaborators and Bystanders”

During the Reconstruction Era, many whites spoke up against the Klu Klux Klan, but the majority kept their mouths shut. The racism was so bad that people began to see violence as an everyday thing. The whites believed that the blacks were “unfit” to have equal citizenship. That’s really messed up. Violence became the legitimate, general, response to white southerners. The Klan had support from almost every person in the community. The Lawyers, who represent the criminals in court, gave their support. The editors as well showed their support; they’re the ones who established the funds for their defense. Last but not least, the women showed support towards the Klan. They’re the ones that made the costumes, disguises, for the Klan. This is one of the bad sides to the Reconstruction Era. The Whites truly overlooked the actions of the Klan because they both had the exact same goal. They both wanted to overthrow the Reconstruction and restoration of White supremacy. That’s a whole lot of messed up. The people were so blinded that they didn’t see the chaos in the order. See, what the Klan was doing wasn’t just something you could just overlook. Back in their day, the Whites, were known as the “Collaborators and Bystanders” because of their actions towards the Klan. In a way they kind of joined forces with the Klan. Both the Klan and the others did wasn’t good. Again, it’s a whole lot of messed up.

  9. I chose to read the article “A Day of Triumph.” Mrs. Caroline Bartlett White heard word from Franklin that the War is over. She is glad and thankful, considering how the Civil War really was. As it says in the passage, everyone in Brookline, Massachusetts went out into the city with joy setting off fireworks, playing music and doing other things, while Mrs. Caroline sat in her quiet room only able to here echoes from the “city’s burst of joy.” We all know how tragic the Civil War was, aspeacially them back then. She said that “one week ago came the thrilling intelligence of the Fall of Petersburg & Richmond”, but today they celebrate General Lee and his armies surrender to General Grant. There were so many men & sons that died in this War, some for right and some for wrong. Mrs. Caroline says that this is the Lord’s doing for stopping this War, that he was lifting his people higher step by step to righteousness, justice & freedom. If I lived in the Civil War era, I would be scared to death. Having to fight for what I beleive was right, fighting against my past and present friends. I could not have done that to be completely honest. Mrs. Caroline is right. It was the Lord’s doing to stop that War. (word count: 223)
