For this week's blog, I want you to research the strategies of President Hoover in dealing with the Great Depression and the strategies of FDR.
For the comments, write 50 words on Hoover's ideas to "fix the Great Depression" and 50 words on FDR's ideas. Then, write 100 words explaining which side you agree with and why.
Well Hoover was known to be one of the causes of the Great Depression which is completely inaccurate. However when the Great Depression occurred he mainly tried to keep the government out of the mess they had made. Hoover believed that keeping government out of buisness was a great idea but that actually hurt their economy and making buisness to powerful . (62)
ReplyDeleteFDR was the president that was elected during the Great Depression so his campaign was mainly wrapped around the fact that he was there to fix all that is broken in our nation. FDR started with his “New Deal”. The New Deal was a series of Acts that helped organize many problems that our country was facing at the time. Like floods, lack of jobs, poverty, and getting more electricity for people’s homes.(74)
I don’t believe that it was fair that Hoover was put in the situation he was in and for him to take as much blame as he did. However when it came to being a president he was terrible at the role when it comes to leading a nation. He was a successful buisness man who hadn’t really experienced failure. However when you have an entire country on their knees begging you for help and all you can do is try to stay out of it is a terrible move as a president. FDR kinda of had an upper hand on Hoover because he knew exactly what he was getting himself into. No not all of his ideas were successful but it blew Hoover’s ideas out of the water.(129)
President Herbert Hoover believed in a limit government. He thought that excessive intervention would pose a threat to individualism. He thought that everything should be handled on a voluntary basis. Even though he did not think it was the governments job to fix it, he still worked hard to fix the economy by encouraging labor and guiding businesses to have stabilized prices. (63)
ReplyDeletePresident Franklin D Roosevelt was known as responding to the Great Depression with an economic mindset which landed us “the new deal” this deal was used to help bring our country out of the recession and help give the people confidence in their very own banking system again which was a good step. (53)
I honestly do not know how I feel about it part of me is for both. I think that Herbert Hoover would have been way better if it was not during the Great Depression for he would be a great leader if he had became the president during another time. For Franklin D Roosevelt did do a good job with the acts and deals he started making while being in office I mean on his very first day he started making deals and plans to help America become a better place and get us out of troubles with the bank (101)
Herbert Hoover:
ReplyDeleteHoover was unprepared to deal with the Great Depression. He did try to create jobs for the American people but the jobs and/or programs he created only taxed the American people. Everyone was frustrated and angry for his plan for this. His programs gave little money for the people and their family and it wasn’t enough. He tried to use little government, which was a bad idea for him.

Franklin Roosevelt
Roosevelt was prepared before and after Hoover’s rediculous plan to drive out the Veterans from the White House. He created “New Deal” programs for the American people to have to make money. The CCC, AAA, WPA, and etc. where made from him. Although, the New Deal projects didn’t get America out of the Depression, it gave us hope that we will overcome it with these new and paying jobs. (72)
I think that President Roosevelt was the better President in my opinion. Reason is, is because he did everything humanly possible for America. To give them hope on a better future. That’s why he served three more terms after his first term. He was a great President. He thought about others, for them to have what they needed to survive. Congress passed 47 New Deal programs to help America’s financial problems and work for farmers and regular people. All 47 programs gave jobs to almost everyone. The New Deal was a symbol of hope in America during that time in the 1929. (102)
President Hoover:
ReplyDeleteHoover undertook various plans intended to fix the economy, and a few of the programs he started became key parts of later relief efforts. Hoover’s response to the crisis was forced by his conservative political view. He believed in a limited role for government and worried that excessive federal interference gave a threat to capitalism and individualism. He felt that assistance should be handled on a local, voluntary basis. Hoover vetoed several bills that would have provided direct relief to struggling Americans.

President Roosevelt:
The New Deal was a series of programs and projects established during the Great Depression by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that intended to restore prosperity to Americans. When Roosevelt took office in 1933, he quickly went to stabilize the economy and provide jobs and relief to those who were suffering. Over the next eight years, the government instituted a series of experimental New Deal projects and programs, such as the CCC, the WPA, the TVA, the SEC and others, that aimed to restore some strength to many Americans. Roosevelt’s New Deal changed the federal government’s relationship to U.S. citizens.
(Word Count:100)
I agree with President Franklin D Roosevelt on his method of fixing the Great Depression. He saw a problem and immediately wanted to jump in and try to help, unlike President Hoover. He wanted to help people find jobs and also fix the economy. Roosevelt and the government came up with many programs designed to help Americans. He promised that he would act swiftly to face the “dark realities of the moment” and promised Americans that he would “wage a war against the emergency” just as though “we were in fact invaded by a foreign foe.” His speech gave many people confidence that they’d elected a man who was not afraid to take big steps to solve the nation’s problems. The things president Roosevelt did fix many problems the citizens had with the government. (Word Count:134)
Hoover And the Great Depression:
ReplyDeleteDuring the Great Depression as it got worse the federal government wanted to get involved but President Hoover refused to let them handle the situation and basically said that he could handle it. Also when the Stock Market had crashed ever since that Hoover worked a lot to get the economy back in order. (54 words)
FDR and the Great Depression:
Unlike president Hoover’s involvement in the Great Depression Franklin Roosevelt got the federal government involved in whatever he saw fit and had what is called The New Deal to help in the struggle of the Great Depression. He also held chats on the radio to tell audiences his plans to get them out of the Great Depression. (57 words)
I personally agree with President FDR and his involvement during the Great Depression rather than president Hoover and his dealings with the Great Depression. I agree with President FDR because he was more involved in making sure we got out of the Great Depression. FDR also was more calm about letting the federal government get involved than Hoover was. Hoover was more stubborn with the federal government trying to get involved. I feel like FDR’s plans to get us out of the Great Depression was more successful than Hoover was. I think that people mainly remember what FDR did during the Great Depression than what Hoover did. (107 words)
Hoover Vs. FDR
ReplyDeleteHerbert Hoover was a republican. He ran the government based off of his political party. He wanted to let everybody fix things voluntarily. The government was in no way extremely involved to help the economy during Hoover’s presidency. However, Herbert Hoover did start programs to work towards helping fix the economy. (51)
Franklin D. Roosevelt was a democrat. He ran and worked the government based off of his beliefs and his political party. Franklin Roosevelt got the government to play the main role in the healing of the great depression. He started working and making changes right after taking office and made lots of laws and programs to get all of America working in the right direction. (65)
In my opinion Franklin Roosevelt was the better president. He made more improvements to the United States and he also seemed to accomplish more in a less period of time. Herbert Hoover had an unfair disadvantage though as he did not know the peak of the great depression was coming right after his presidency. I think that Franklin went smarter about how to fix the great depression. He was more dedicated. He was more organized in his method. Roosevelt was also very persistent. In 1935 as soon as the economy started to look like it was getting better, he passed more through congress and continued pursuing fixing the economy. (109)
FDR on the Great Depression: During the Great Depression, president Franklin D. Roosevelt came up with the New Deal. He thought this deal would be the ticket to no more depression. The New Deal didn’t end the Great Depression, but it did help. The war ended the Great Depression, but that is not the main topic.” pledged himself to “a new deal for the American people.” In his First Inaugural Address, saying “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” he sought to reassure the public amid the anxieties of the Great Depression.^33”(90)
ReplyDeleteHoover on the Great Depression: As the Great Depression got worse, president Hoover thought that the federal government shouldn’t get involved. He believed that it would lead to socialism, so with that being said he decided to lean towards volunteerism. This didn’t go so well. People began to call him an uncaring president. Sadly, Hoovervilles came into play and everything for Hoover went south. (59)
I chose: I believe they both had the right attitude towards the Great Depression, but one wasn’t that great and the other was pretty good. I have a lot of respect for both. Unfortunately, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s idea had the best outcome for America. I would choose Franklin D. Roosevelt’s side. Not only did FDR create the New Deal but he also did Fireside Chats. These chats connected the president and the community in a way that America never knew they needed. He brought comfort during the Great Depression unlike Hoover. Hoover brought the opposite of peace. As Hoover dealt with the Great Depression, not only did it get worse but the people’s lives got worse.(114)
Herbert Hoover put a lot of effort into programs that would help the economy start back up. Overall, Herbert Hoover did not help the economy fix itself in any way. He tried to step back and let people fix it on their own but it did not succeed. He ran the government based off of his core political beliefs. (59)
ReplyDeleteFranklin D. Roosevelt got the government more involved. He made a superior impact on the economy compared to Herbert Hoover. Franklin saw right away that there was an issue that needed to be fixed. He closed all the banks and then immediately made a reform legislation. His hard work does not go unnoticed and the impact was very beneficial to the economy. (62)
I think they both did a good job based off what they both believed. Herbert Hoover stuck to his core conservative beliefs and tried to let the government plant the seed while others were putting in all the work. However, Franklin Roosevelt was the more successful president during this time, they both just ran the government off of their core beliefs. I’d agree more with Franklin Roosevelt truly taking the leadership role of our country. I feel that Herbert Hoover might have done better if the Great Depression didn’t seriously hit right after he became president. Maybe the people should not have relied on the government so much but when Franklin made the government step up things got a lot better. (121)
ReplyDeleteHoover had worked very hard on trying to fix the economy. Many people believe that Hoover is the cause of the great depression but that is every false. He founded government agencies, encouraged labor harmony, supported local aid for public works, fostered cooperation between government and business in order to stabilize prices, and struggled to balance the budget. His work focused on indirect relief from individual states and the private sector. The problem that he had is that he expected people to volunteer to do his work. Word Count: 87
Franklin Roosevelt made a number of suggestions to help end the Great Depression, including introducing basic banking and welfare reforms. While many of his programs did not take effect until much later, his ideas and programs have lasted throughout the years. Many people thought that he was the cause that America got on the right path again, but he honestly helped as much as Hoover. President Roosevelt just acted like he cared. Word Count: 72
Both presidents increased government spending without increasing taxes, thereby creating huge budget deficits. Many economists say their deficits made the Great Depression longer.
I Believe that president Franklin Roosevelt did a very good job at trying to defeating the great depression. Even though Hoover did things to help America, he seemed as if he didn't really know what to do. At times he came off as trying to avoid that america was struggling. Roosevelt should leadership he overdid himself. Roosevelt passed 47 New Deal programs to help America’s financial problems and work for farmers and regular people. Roosevelt gave America’s hope during a time that they needed it most. Word Count: 109
Herbert Hoover tried very hard to help to help start the economy back up however his efforts failed, his work focused on indirect relief from individual states and the private sector also voluntarism. However as the depression worsened Hoover refused to involve the government, he believed that it would led toward socialism (52)
ReplyDeleteFranklin Roosevelt involved the government a lot more and had the idea of the New Deal, it had many different programs in it to help restart the economy although some didn’t work it gave hope to the American people. FDR also worked with the banks creating “bank holidays” which closed the banks for four days so congress could act. (59)
I believe that Roosevelt better acted in this situation, the government needed to be involved to help pull the economy out of the depression. Although both presidents tried to help America, Franklin Roosevelt’s ideas had the better end result. Roosevelt and his New Deal program really help America, even though it didn’t end the Great Depression. The New Deal provided many jobs to a variety of people, such as women and African Americans, it also abolished child labor. There was also social security act that provided to the elderly and unemployed. I believe that this was what the US needed, they needed to have hope. (106)

Hoover
ReplyDeleteThe stock market crashed on Thursday October 24, 1929 which was less than eight months into Hoover’s presidency. Most people though it was just a “passing recession” but when Hoover sent out a letter in July of 1931 to a Governor of Illinois and that is when everyone realized it was an “economic slowdown”. During his time in presidency he worked hard on trying to fix the economy. He founded government agencies, supported local business that were still running, and struggled but tried to balance the budget of many things. As it grew worse Hoover refused to involve the government into forcing fixed prices, controlling business, or even manipulating the value of the currency.

FDR
FDR took responsibility and to help the economy out of the Great Depression he helped in many ways. He created series of ways of helping known as “The New Deal.” This was designed to help give the American People bank again. One of the most popular “New Deals” was Civilian Conservation Corps. It was used to provide employment for those who were out of work and also create many public work spaces around the country. Although the majority of the New Deals were created to help families and employers get their lives back one of them is still in use to this day. The Federal Housing Administration which is a government agency that helped the housing problems cause by the Great Depression. As of 2014 the FHA still oversees most housing programs and mortgage programs through the US.
