Post War America: Truman vs. Eisenhower

As we close the book on World War Two, we look ahead to the two men who would lead us during the pivotal post-war years into the turbulent 1960s.

Truman had to deal with the decision to use nuclear weapons, plummeting approval ratings and the Korean War.

Eisenhower, in stark contrast, was the conquering hero of Europe. The leader of D-Day, he enjoyed a fairly popular and prosperous presidency.

You'll need to do independent research on each president in order to complete this week's blog.

Since we did not have a blog last week, this week's blog will count for 100 points and will require 400 words.

For the comments...

A) After you have used the website to research each president, write a 100 word summary paragraph on BOTH presidents. Discuss their main beliefs and issues they faced during their terms in office.

B) Finish the blog with a 200 word paragraph on which president you think did a better job. Be sure to give evidence to back up your opinion.

  1. President Truman:
Harry Truman was the 33rd U.S. president of the United States. He seized office after the death of President Franklin Roosevelt. In the White House from 1945 to 1953, Truman made the decision to use the atomic bomb against Japan, helped rebuild postwar Europe, worked to try to contain communism and led the United States into the Korean War. Durning Truman presidency he faced many things. The first decision he had to make was to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. Another thing he faced was Russia and their communism policy. Lastly, he had to deal with the loss of China to communism. (Word Count:104)
    President Eisenhower:
In 1952 the leading Republicans convinced Eisenhower to run for president; he won a victory over Democrat Adlai Stevenson and would serve two terms in the White House. During his presidency, Eisenhower managed Cold War-era tensions with the Soviet Union under the rising threat of nuclear weapons, ended the war in Korea in 1953 and authorized a number of covert anti-communist operations by the CIA around the world. On the home front, where America was enjoying a period of relative prosperity, Eisenhower strengthened Social Security, created the massive new Interstate Highway System. Though popular throughout his administration, he hesitated in the protection of civil rights for African Americans by failing to fully enforce the Supreme Court’s mandate for the desegregation of schools in Brown v. Board of Education. (Word Count:128)
    Better President:
When choosing who was a better president Truman or Eisenhower I would have to go with Eisenhower. Eisenhower basically fixed everything truman did that was wrong and solved many problems truman initiated in his presidency. First Truman dropped the bomb on Japan that killed many innocent people which many people in the U.S. didn't agree with. On the other hand, Eisenhower was one of the men that was againt the use of the atomic bomb on Japan. He believed that Japan was on the verge of surrendering anyway. Truman got the U.S. in the Korean war and as soon as his presidency was over and Eisenhower became president and signed an armistice to end the Korean War. Truman tried to contain communism but his policies didn't work so well. Eisenhower Communism policy worked much better he came up with a anti-communism policy and got the CIa involved to investigate things. Another thing is that Truman was not doing well with problems with Russia and their communism policy. Eisenhower stepped in and managed with the problems we had with russia and really pushed his anti-communism policy. Lastly, Eisenhower helped many U.S. Citizens with his Social Security act and his interstate highway system. This shows how Eisenhower was overall a better president than Truman. (Word Count:215)

  2. Harry Truman became president after the death of president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Truman was the president who decided on dropping the atomic bomb on Japan during the Second World War. Interestingly president Truman fought in the First World War. Also in 1934 Truman got elected into the Senate. President Harry Truman in the year 1947 joe introduced the Truman Doctrine. Truman also instituted the Marshall plan as well. President Truman had the challenge of transitioning America into the peacetime economy. In the year of 1948 Harry S. Truman ran for re-election of President along with Thomas Dewey, Truman won. (100)

Dwight D. Eisenhower was the president who strengthened Social security. President Eisenhower had also was the one who created the new interstate highway System. Eisenhower was also a general before his presidency and in September 1941 Eisenhower had received his first general’s star. He also headed the operation torch in the year 1942. He was appointed the supreme commander of the allied expeditionary force in the year of 1943. Sometime before he was president Eisenhower had become the president of Columbia University in New York City. A little bit after taking the presidency signed an armistice that ended the Korean War. (114)

Choosing between who the better president Truman or Eisenhower is hard but I think that president Truman was the better president over president Eisenhower. One reason why I think that president Truman is the better president than president Eisenhower because president Truman made the really hard decisions for our country. Although Eisenhower did a lot of great things for our country Truman is still the better president according to my opinion. Another reason why I think that president Truman was a better president than president Eisenhower because president Truman had more responsibilities as president than president Eisenhower had as president one responsibility that Truman had was trying his best to get the Second World War done gone and over with he also had big responsibilities in handling the dreadful Korean War. Lastly there is one more reason that I really want to talk about to complete my view on who was the better president Truman or Eisenhower which I chose Truman The reason why I think that president Truman is really the better president than president Eisenhower could even ever be is because president Truman had more things to do and accomplish as president way more than president Eisenhower even had. 3. Truman:
After the sudden death of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman was elected President. He wasn’t really that experienced with politics. In the beginning of his presidency, he was faced with atomic weapons and the decision to drop an atomic bomb. Truman was not fond of communism, and created the policy of containment and the Truman doctrine. But wait there’s more, he also “adopted” the Marshall plan. I believe that he was a good president. The man’s intentions were good. I have a lot of respect for him. I think that he was an underestimated president. Although his second term wasn’t so great, his first term was wonderful. (107)

    Eisenhower:
Eisenhower became president in 1953-1961. “Eisenhower managed Cold War-era tensions with the Soviet Union under the looming threat of nuclear weapons, ended the war in Korea in 1953 and authorized a number of covert anti-communist operations by the CIA around the world.”[history.com] This was only within the few months and years in his presidency. We also get to thank him for our highways (interstates). However, he wasn’t much help to the civil rights between the African Americans. It seems that he was a bit “hesitant”. To conclude, he did several things to benefit America. We’ve been blessed to be able to call him one of our presidents. (111)

If you count all the benefits, the numbers speak that Eisenhower was the better president. To counter, I think that Truman was a wonderful president. Yes, Eisenhower did several things that trump Truman, but Truman tried his very best and held all the responsibility. That’s amazing. I believe that’s worthy of being president. I would rather have a president that has good intentions, knows what their doing, is humble, respectable, responsible, treats the people as his family, and tries their best. If they have wisdom, a soft heart, and are chosen by the Lord, then let it be. So, in my opinion they both did an amazing job as president and that America needed them. I’m proud of what they accomplished and I really hope that America is as well. Let me just say I’m very thankful for the interstate. It’s a major blessing. “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” -Truman. “Pessimism never won any battle.” -Eisenhower. In conclusion, I’m thankful for our presidents and all the work they’ve done. America wouldn’t be the America it is today without all of the presidents. (193) (411)

  4. Truman:
Truman was President Roosevelt’s vice president. While Truman was Vice President, the plans for the atomic bomb were being built, but nothing was said to Truman. On April 12, 1945 Harry Truman became the 33rd President of the United States. As President, Truman made some of the most crucial decisions in History. Truman had gotten himself into a presidency filled with war. After Japan rejected to surrender, Truman ordered that atomic bombs be dropped on cities in Japan that were delibeltry for war work. Truman also helped rebuild Europe after the war, helped continua communism, and helped lead United States to the Korean War. (104)

    Eisenhower:
Dwight D Eisenhower was once a supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War 2 and soon to be President. Eisenhower led the invasion of Europe that, at the time, had been taken over by Nazi’s. In 1952, the current Republicans got Eisenhower to run for president. He took the win over the Democrat nominee, Adlai Stevenson and served in the White House from 1953-1961. During Eisenhower’s presidency he, ended the Korean War in 1953, ended the Cold War-era tensions with the Soviet Union, strengthened Social Security, and created a new Interstate Highway System. Those are just a few of his many achievements. (105)

If i had to choose a President that I think did a better job i would have to choose Eisenhower. Truman did do many great things but I also don’t think he wasnt truly meant for presidency since he only became President because Roosevelt died. In my opinion Truman wasn’t one of the best president because he decided to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan and ended up killing many of innocent people. This then caused the U.S. too hate nuclear weapons and even still to this day not use them. Eisenhower, on the other hand, was one of the ones that was against the atomic bomb. Eisenhower did many great things that his Presidency became a huge success. On December 24, 1943 Eisenhower was made the supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, which was just the start of his era. During Eisenhower’s presidency he did many great things. In the economy section, Eisenhower reduced taxes, balanced budgets, had the government decrease their control over the economy, and let the states take over certain responsibilities. The minimum wage was increased to 1$ per hour. In 1953 the department of Health, Education, and welfare was created. During Eisenhower’s campaign for President he promised to visit Korea and end the war that had been going on, and he did just that. All in all I believe Eisenhower was truly the better President from all of his great accomplishments. (241)

  5. Truman:
Truman had a great run with interesting things that happened during his time in office. He had the Atomic Bomb dropped off on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Truman Doctrine, Iron Curtain, Manhattan Project, National Security Act, Desegragation in the Military and so much more. He was dropped right in to heavy fire as a president. Roosevelt died before the “fun started.” The issue that got my attention the most was the Atomic Bomb being dropped. Truman was away when this was going on, known as the Potsdam Declaration because the United States, Britain, and China tried to get Japan to surrender before “prompt and utter destruction” started. (107)

    Eisenhower:
Eisenhower was a good president and many people thought he was better than Truman because he made the good easy decisions for the country. He was involved with JFK, Nixon, had great impact on D-Day, created the department of health, education, welfare, made plenty of acts for Americans to use and have, was apart of the Red Scare. He had the easy part of the 50’s and 60’s. He helped increase the amount Americans that had social security to 10 million people. He really wanted to help the people and be there for them. During his presidentcy he had a heart attack in Denver, Colorado, but it was a mild one. (108)

I think that President Truman did a better job. He was thrown into the second hardest position as president. He had to deal with multiply things at once. Germany just surrendered and Japan was not backing down. So while he was away he introduced the Manhattan Project, which made the bombs for him drop on Japan if they surrender. What a shocker, they didn’t. Not one, but two times then had to drop the Atomic Bomb in Japan to get them to surrender. So after that victory between us and Japan, we had to worry about the Soviet Union bombing us. Truman released the Marshall Plan for us the help rebuild Europe and repair all the damages that were done during World War Two. The Truman Doctrine was an act by Truman to help aid Turkey and Greece with $400 million for supplies and resources to stand against the Soviet Union. He was just a great president in general, he did so much good in the midst of the bad things going on around him. He couldn’t stand having a segregated military so joined them together for unity. He had a saying, “the buck stops here.” Meaning if something went wrong then he is the one responsible for whatever that was. He knew that, which is why he said it. (221)

  6. Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, in 1884. He grew up in Independence, and for 12 years prospered as a Missouri farmer. He went to France during World War I as a captain in the Field Artillery. When he returned back home he married Elizabeth Virginia Wallace. Truman was involved in Democratic Party, he was elected a judge of the Jackson County Court in 1922. Later became a Senator in 1934. After being a senator he became the Vice President, but not long after he was the president do to Franklin Roosevelt’s death. Truman made some of the most crucial decisions in history. Truman, ordered atomic bombs dropped on cities devoted to war work. Two were Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In June 1945 Truman witnessed the signing of the charter of the United Nations. Truman wanted to make sure America was protected from the outsiders.

Eisenhower was born in Texas in 1890, he was the third of seven sons. Eisenhower was great in sports while in high school, and received an appointment to West Point. In 1916 he married Mamie Geneva Doud.
Eisenhower joined the army and served under Generals John J. Pershing, Douglas MacArthur, and Walter Krueger. In 1952 Eisenhower ran for presidency; which he won, what Eisenhower was not aware f is that he would serve for two terms in the White House (1953-1961). While president Eisenhower strengthened Social Security and created the massive new Interstate Highway System. Eisenhower wanted to make sure America had all of its necessities.

I believe that the man who did a better job at being a president was
Harry S. Truman. I believe that Eisenhower did many things to improve American and make it a better country but I still choose Truman because I believe it comes down to the huge decision that Truman had to make which was to weather drop an atomic bomb at Japan or not. If it were not for his decision who knows we’re America would be as a country right now. Another reason I believe Truman did a better job as a president is because he wasn’t really aware that he was going to be president, it was a surprise to all. Another thing that Truman did good for America was the Truman Doctrine, he established that the United States would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from external or internal authoritarian forces. The Truman Doctrine effectively reoriented U.S. foreign policy, away from its usual stance of withdrawal from regional conflicts not directly involving the United States, to one of possible intervention in far away conflicts. Truman was a great problem solver and he wanted to keep his people protected from evil and he wanted to succeed as a country. This is a good trait for a president because many just care for themselves and they forget about what they are a president which is to be the voices of everyone and to do good for everyone.
