As we approach this chapter about America moving westward, we will encounter some ugly truths about our past. The most obvious is the blatant disregard for the well-being of the Native Americans "in our way".
Many famous battles (aka massacres) were fought in this period. One that stands out as unique, because America lost, was the Battle of Little Bighorn (aka Custer's Last Stand).

A. Why were the natives victorious in this battle?
ReplyDeleteTwo armies that fought at the battle of the Little Bighorn were 3000 warriors of the Sioux and Cheyenne nations and 380 soldiers of America. These warriors had violated the treaty with the U.S to stay on the reservation. The soldiers were ordered to return them to the reservation. Some warriors were on horseback and some were on foot. They used bows, arrows and some guns. The soldiers had rifles to kill the enemy from a long distance. Colonial Custer did not know how many warriors there were. He divided his soldiers believing his men and equipment were superior to the natives. For that reason, the natives were able to get close, surround smaller groups of soldiers and were victorious in this battle. (124)
B. Why do you think they were largely unsuccessful in every other major skirmish with the US Army during this period?
Defeat of the soldiers of the United States of America was very unusual because they were very experienced in war. For several years, the United States Army had fought against the Confederate Army of the South. The weapons normally used by the natives were crude compared to those of the United States Calvary who had the best handguns and rifles available at that time. Additionally, the natives often fought among themselves and were seldom able to bring a large enough force together to overwhelm the professional soldiers on horses. (89)
A. The natives were victorious in the battle because of a few reasons. One of the reasons was that they split into four quadrants when they already had less soldiers. Another reason is the natives did not split up but attack all 3000 men in one area at a time what swept the American soldiers. This strategy swept the American soldiers because they only had 380 men compared to the 3000 men. It also did not help that they were divided up so it was only like 95 men vs 3000 at a time for most of the battle. But the reason they say they were victorious is because they killed more of us than we killed of them. (118)
ReplyDeleteB. I believe they were very unsuccessful in every other fight because the US learned from their mistakes and started bringing more men to battle. I also believe they were unsuccessful because the US had guns what were pretty modern compared to what they used. Another way they were probably very unsuccessful against the US was the US did not split into as many small groups as it did and stayed more as one unit. These are just some of the reasons why I believe that the Indians were not as successful in the later attacks after they defeated the US army once. (102)
A. The natives were victorious because the army was outnumbered and also they decided to attack a village without knowing that they were outnumbered. As well as they were surrounded by natives and had no where to go. The natives caught on their horse and the army was on foot so the natives had the advantage. Also they were ordered to shoot their horses and stack them to form a wall , not smart, bu then they could not retreat because they just shot their horses. That was a grave mistake.(100)
DeleteB. I believe that they were unsuccessful because us brought more men as a whole they were stronger and had more modern weapons like guns and cannons. The Indians only had spears and arrows for their defense. I also think that we had forts that we could use as protection and the Indians would travel and live in tents. This made the Indians very easy to sneak up on and attack at night.(100)
A)There are many reasons that the natives won the Battle of Little Bighorn. One reason is that Custer was outnumbered with the Natives numbering 3000 and Custer and his men about 380. He also divided his troops into much smaller groups which caused them to be overcome by the Indians. On top of all this Custer also ignored orders to wait to attack and didn’t know the terrain or river he would have to cross to carry out a successful attack. Also, before he attacked Custer sent out a group of soldiers to scout the area and make sure no other villages were nearby. (104)
ReplyDeleteB) I think that a factor in the Natives losing most of their battles is that the U.S. troops simply had better technology and more resources. The U.S. had a large supply of guns, horses, and men. The Natives has Spears and bows which were used for hunting or fighting other tribes. The native weapons were no match compared to the guns of the military. The army also had battle tactics as well as military training compared to the Indians who had none. The army also outnumbered the Native Americans and were able to replace the soldiers lost in battle. (101)
A-Why were the natives victorious in this battle?
ReplyDeleteI believe that the natives were way more victorious in that battle of little big horn than the American forces because of the fact that the American spillers consentently retreated. Also the natives greatly out numbered the American army . Because the natives so greatly out numbered the American army’s they wiped the American army out completely. Their were 3000 warriors of the Sioux and Cheyenne nations. 380 American soiders with colonial Custer. The natives used bows, arrows and some guns. The Americans use Riffels for its abilities to shoot targets from a distance, Custer did not realize the massive amount of Warriors the natives had.(100)
B-Why do you think they were largely unsuccessful in every other major skirmish with the US Army during this period?
Everyone during this time know that the American armies was extremely skilled and talented war. Which is why it was such a big deal for the people to figure out that the natives which was made up of the Sioux and Cheyenne nations beat the American army’s. Lt. colonel George Custer and the seventh calalry along with 380 other men attacked the natives. Also I believe the United Stated learned from their past mistakes. They brought more men to battle. They also never lost a battle to the natives after little big horn because of this. The Indians aslo made their camp extremely vulnerable.(100)
A) The Native Americans were victorious because they had more numbers than Custer did, Custer only had around 380 troops, while the natives had around 3000 troops. Custer divided up most of the troops, while the natives attacked them with all 3000 troops, so in reality it was around 100 versus 3000. Another thing that affected the battle is that no one knew the land except the indians, the soldiers didn’t know where they could possibly be ambushed from. The Indians knew the territory so they could attack at any time and surprise the soldiers with their numbers. Custer was outnumbered and outsmarted. (102)
ReplyDeleteB) The main factor in the natives losing most of the battles is that the U.S. had more resources than the native Americans, more men, guns, more horses. The native Americans were behind already considering they didn’t have guns or near as many men, they could only us spears and bows versus guns and cannons. The army was also trained for true battle situations, while the Indians were trained for more ambush type situations. The army also didn’t have a problem with replacing soldiers that were lost. The army also had better military leaders, they had people who were experts at war tactics. (102)
A. Why were the natives victorious in this battle? I believe the natives were victorious in this battle for many reasons. The natives outnumbered the American soldiers 3000 to 380. The Native Americans battle tactics also helped them to win this battle. Custard also ordered his men to divide into three troops. This made it easier for the 3000 Native American warriors to attack the American troops. They also crossed the river to run into the soldiers and another group also caved in on the soldiers so they were cornered. I believe that the main reason for this victory was General Custer underestimating the power of the native Americans. (100)
ReplyDeleteB. Why do you think they were largely unsuccessful in every other major skirmish with the US Army during this period? I believe that the Native Americans did not have the success like they did in the battle of Little Bighorn was because the US was always more advanced. The Americans would go into battle thinking they had the advantage because they had guns and more experience. The US also had weapons equipment for fighting large battles and war tactics to do it. The natives used their advantage in size to overcome this battle against the US. This battle was an example to the Americans to never underestimate the enemy and always to expect the worst when it comes to battle. (100)
A- The main reason the battle of Little Bighorn was won by the Natives is primarily due to the fact that they heavily outnumbered the American army. The Natives had over three thousand while the American army only had about three hundred and eighty soldiers. This coupled with the fact that General Custer and the other battalions had very bad timing in all of their actions. Not only were the Americans extremely outnumbered but they continued to split up more and more to the point where they just got absolutely slaughtered, even the would hide in the woods or retreated.
ReplyDeleteB- The Natives were largely unsuccessful in every other battle against the Americans was because every other time the Americans were the ones to outnumber the Natives. The Americans also had much better artillery such as rifles and cannons and the Natives only really had bow and arrows and spears, although I believe they did have some rifles it was nowhere near the amount that the Americans had. Often the battle of Little Bighorn the Americans also would go on to take even more precautions to prevent another massacre they would send a lot more troops and be a lot more strategic.
Why do I think the natives were victorious in this battle? I believe the natives were victorious because they out numbered the US troops. The Sitting Bull had almost eight times as many troops/soldiers/bodies as General Custer did. Not only was the ratio from natives to US troops 3000 to 380, General Custer and his troops were almost going into the battle blind not knowing completely what was going on and if where the natives were gonna attack from. As more of General Custer’s troops started to die, the more worried he/ his troops got which made him retreat which eventually made him and his troops dying and losing the battle. (100)
ReplyDeleteWhy do I think the natives were largely unsuccessful in every other skirmish with the US army during this period?
Normally, the US army troops would out number native Americans and would have guns, which would give them the advantage over the Indians and most of the time they would win. The US Army would usually plan out battles and storm into the Indians camps when they weren’t expecting and slaughter them all, but in this particular battle, the Native Americans not only out numbered the US army troops, they were ready to defend themselves for the time needed.(100)
A) Why were the natives victorious in this battle
ReplyDeleteThe natives were victorious in battle due to an insurmountable lack of coordination. While many may say this loss was caused purely by the underestimation of the opponent their military power and weaponry could still have easily defeated the Natives. Through custers lack of coordination with his military he decided to lead his battalions to charge without the back up and options provided by such. Realizing they were outnumbered he worsened the situation by dividing his troops into small squads ultimately losing superior positioning and not properly coordinating with their advantageous positioning. Ending with a slaughter of troops brought upon by the natives knowledge of the land to ultimately cause the troops to retreat turning custers plan against them ultimately running them up the hill they planned to attack from. 140
B) The natives were largely unsuccessful with almost every other skirmish due to the historic victory they achieved at Little Bighorn. Through their victory the US learned of almost all the mistakes they could have and did make and used the battle as an example of what could happen with a lack of strategic and materialistic lack of coordination . After this the US never underestimated the natives in hopes of never losing soldiers land of honor again. Thus creating better strategies campaigns and legislations to ultimately turn the natives into helpers of the US through the monopolization of the US and offering them their own land for coordination reinforced by the growing military powers the US achieved through its manifest destiny.
