World War One: The War To End All Wars?

The War To End All War...that's what people really thought about this conflict.

It seems strange to think people could be so naive, but I think this mindset relates to just how terrible WW1 was. People could not imagine another conflict as horrific as this one. And yet, we know better...

This week's blog consists of two crash course episodes about World War One. The first video is from the "world's perspective" of the war and the second is from "America's perspective".

Video One (World Perspective)

Video Two (America Perspective)

Watch both and in the comments create a Top 10 List for each video (100 words each). Even though the videos are about the same war, they are looking at it from two different angles. Be sure to reflect those differences in your lists.

  5. Video One- World’s Perspective

    1. The immediate cause of World War I was the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914. He was assassinated by a Bosnian Serb nationalist named Gavrilo Princip.

    2. Austria declared war against Serbia. Russia was aligned with the Serbs, so they mobilized the Russian army. Germany was aligned with Austria. When Russia did not stop mobilizing, Germany mobilized their own army and declared war on Russia. This cemented an alliance with the Ottomans, who then declared war on France.

    3. The Schlieffen Plan, was Germany’s War plan, and required that the German’s quickly invade France.

    4. Great Britain was aligned with Belgium and so they declared war on Germany.

    5. Trench warfare on the Western Front is most famous for its brutal futility - Great Britain and France on one side, Germany on the other, with no man’s land between.

    6. World War I featured combatants from around the world, including soldiers from India, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

    7. Over 15 million people were killed and over 20 million wounded.

    8. An influenza epidemic broke out toward the end of the war, which killed three times as many people as the war itself.

    9. The two most devastating technologies of WWI were American made, machine guns and barbed wire.

    10. The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I, and placed the blame for the war on Germany. (223)

    Video Two- America’s Perspective

    1. World War I War, lasted from 1914 until 1918, but Americans were only involved in ‘The Great War’ for 19 months.

    2. Initially, when the war broke out, America remained neutral, in part because the country was isolationist and led by President Wilson.

    3. The sinking of the cruise ship, Lusitania, by German submarines, is not what brought America into WWI. In fact, the United States declared war on Germany and the Central Powers on April 2nd 1917, almost two years after the sinking of the Lusitania.

    4. There were four main reasons that led to America’s involvement in the war: (1) Germany’s decision to resume unrestricted submarine warfare in early 1917 (2) The interception and publication of the Zimmerman telegram, in which the German Foreign Secretary promised to help Mexico get back California if they joined Germany in a war against America (3) The fall of the Tsarist regime in Russia, which made Wilson's claims that he wanted to fight to make the world safe for democracy a bit more believable. (4) America’s desire to help Britain, to whom we had loaned two billion dollars.

    5. America's primary contribution to winning the war was economic. America sent all sorts of arms and money overseas. Troops didn't arrive until the spring of 1918.

    6. Troops were much more likely to die of flu than bullet wounds. But their sheer numbers were enough to force the defeat of the Germans.

    7. In May of 1917, Congress passed the Selective Service Act, which required 24 million men to register for the draft.

    8. The Espionage Act of 1917 prohibited spying, interfering with the draft and "false statements that might impede military success.”

    9. The Great War provided new opportunities in wartime industry. It also provided incentives for African-Americans to move north, thus beginning the so-called "Great Migration.”

    10. Disappointment over the outcome of World War I led the U.S. to, for the most part, retreat into isolationism until World War II. (321)
