  1. All of the photographs that I looked at you could see the grief and all that they have been through during the depression.the pictures that made the greatest impact on me was the ones with little kids in them because they had to grow up not knowing what to do. These pictures make you feel lucky that you grew/grow up not during the depression. The pictures I looked at also show how the people were fealty and wearing dirty clothes holding each other not knowing what to do and fearing for their lives. In conclusion, I'm glad I did not grow up during the depression. (107)

The Great Depression was not caused by just one thing but multiple things that happened over time. One of the main things was a money shortage that Hoover did his best to try and fix but could not do much about it. The depression was also forced bank closers around the world. The banks closed because of lack of money and funds. Banks would also not give loans at these times. Another thing was the decrease in tariffs due to the lack of money flow and one of the major things was the loss of jobs and failure of businesses. (100)

  2. Dorothea Lange is an American photographer and photojournalist, best known for her photographs documenting The Great Depression. Of Lange’s many photos, the most well known is “Migrant Mother.” This work is currently displayed in the Library of Congress.
This photograph stands out to me, not just because of its popularity, but because it makes me feel sad for the woman. She looks worried and tired. Her clothes are dirty and the children next to her are tired and leaning on her for support, mentally and physically. I’m also moved by Lange’s work, “White Angel Bread Line.” This photograph was taken outside a soup kitchen in San Francisco, California. It shows many men standing in line for food. Lois Jordan, known as the White Angel, charitably fed over a million hungry men during the time. You can see a mix of expressions on the men’s faces in this photo. Some of them look happy to be getting food, but the one man leaning on the fence looks incredibly sad and heartbroken. This photograph captures the pain of hunger that many endured during the Great Depression. Her photograph, “Potato Picker's Roadside Bed,” does not include any faces. Instead, it features a single cot, pillow and makeshift home which make me think of the migrant farmers and their journey to find work. Lange’s photos capture the suffering and pain of the depression era. (230)

    2) The time in history commonly known as “The Great Depression” is complicated. Many associate the beginning of the depression with the stock market crash of 1929. And while the economic crash did occur before the depression, it did not necessarily cause it to happen. During the stock market crash, many wealthy people lost a lot of money, especially farmers and other businessmen. The Great Depression is marked by massive unemployment and hardship that began in 1930. Historians blame this on, among other things, America's weak banking system. In 1930, many banks began to fail as customers lined up to take their money out of the bank before the bank went out of business. This led to less money circulating in the economy, which led to deflation. To cover their costs, businesses had to lay off workers, which led to massive unemployment. Globally, fewer people were financially able to buy American goods, and eventually world trade came to a stand-still. This again led to more unemployment. As if this wasn’t bad enough, the United States also experienced a devastating drought from 1930 to 1936. The drought worsened already poor soil conditions. The land turned into “dust bowls” created by the high winds that carried dust across the land that did not contain crops. Once again, farmers lost their farms and property and were forced to migrate to urban areas looking for jobs. (231)

  3. Dorothea Lange photography was a photographer during the Great Depression. She took many pictures showing the lives during this harsh time. I saw a few of kids during the Great Depression, and it really makes you think about how lucky you are. There was also one of a bunch of men standing in line at the breadlines. It shows them starving and hungry for food. It is so sad to look at and try to understand what these people went through. We take having food at our finger tips so for granted while these people were begging for anything to just survive. She was able to capture what was going on at this time so we can see what these people had to go through which is really sad. (129)

The first cause of the Great Depression for when you search it says its when the stock market crashed and “Black Tuesday”. By two months after the crash they had lost $40 billion through this crash which would make a large debt. The second was all the banks crashing. They had lost over 3,000 banks which can hurt the economy incredibly bad. Another supposedly big contributor to the Great Depression was the Dust Bowl. The drought hurt lots of people and caused them to leave their jobs and families and farms and such. It hurt the economy very badly and obviously made a very large impact. (107)

  4. After looking through the Dorthea Lange photos during the great depression. I believe I have a new respect on what people went through. The photo I looked at was a woman who looked very poor with two kids standing next to her and a baby in her arms. This photo shows them very dirty it looks like they had not showered in a while. the woman looks very depressed and the two kids looked very tired. this give me a new respect for what the people during the great depression went through and how I need to be more grateful for what I have.(104)

Although there are multiple reasons for the start of the great depression there are three main ones that were The most influential. The United States great depression started off with something called “Black Tuesday” which was also known as the great crash that happened in 1929. This is America’s highest unemployment rate it’s where the droughts began and was known as the start of the depression. The second reason that started the depression was when the banks closed they distributed the money unfairly, which made people very upset. The third reason that led up to the depression was that everyone was losing their money and most companies went into bankruptcy which destroyed the economy.

  5. 1.The photographs that affected me the most were ones that showed the effects that the depression had on everyone, like being dirty or skinny from the lack of nutrition since everybody was poor. One of my pictures shows an elderly man sitting in a rocking chair who looks dirty with a blank look on his face. Another picture that says a lot of these times is that of a little child who is really skinny, probably from the lack of food. These pictures just go to show how hard it was for familys after the crash. It ruined everyones job and made everyone poor. (106)

    2. One of the many reasons the the great depression happened was the gold standard. Once oil was discovered it became very important and it was sought after becoming the most valuable material which made gold prices drop. The stock market crash also played a big role in the great depression when the market crashed people lost their jobs their money and their houses. The great depression was probably one of the biggest economic failures to ever happen. After the crash 25 percent of banks closed down or ran out of business due to the decline in people using them.(101)

  6. I chose a picture of this landscape that was from the Great Depression. In this picture I saw a car but not the whole car I could only see the a little bit less than the top half of the car the rest was covered in sand. Then I saw half of a broken wagon in the sand. In the background there was nothing but sand. The was a tiny house in the right side of the picture that appeared to have the windows torn out. I chose this photo because it is a great picture of what the affects were during the dust bowl and shows how much damage it did to farm lands and homes.(117)

There was not just one cause of the Great Depression but the main one that I think is the stock market crash of 1929. This happened because people would invest into stocks then things start to concern them so they sell their stock which bring that stock down in value. The next was the bank failures that occurred because the banks started to shut down so people would try and get their money out and when they could not they would loose their savings causing banks to fail.(102)

  7. Dorothea Lange was a woman who ventured out to display the respective effects the Great Depression had on various people through photography. I couldn’t choose one particularly phot to write about or full the nescassary allotment of 100 words so I’ll discuss a few and what I think they communicate. One of her most popular pictures is Migrant Mother.” It is a picture displaying a migrant pea pickers in California along with 3 of her seven children . They appear dirty and weathered both physically and emotionally by the enviremont. The mother has a look of uncertainty. Yet, here look contrarily portrays that she’s been been through the worst that life can throw at her.Another picture of hers that I found the most helpful in understanding the environment of the time is White Angel Breadline. This photo involves a plethora of men in gentlemen like attire waiting in a bread line with one man facing the camera. The man who’s facing the camera. The man who’s facing the camera has a dreary, irritated, and hopeless look. Which I find unexplainably moving since the upper half of his face is covered by his hat. Which I feel really goes to show how the era made these feelings of hopelessness become engrained into someone.212

The stock market crash of 1929. During the 1920s the U.S. stock market underwent a historic expansion. This was due to the fact that the stock market was very successful and people were widely using their disposable income to buy shares. Most of these were Carried on margin. So when the prices fell people rapidly started selling their stock. Making the situation worse. Another Cause of the depression was banking panics and monetary contraction. Between 1930 and 1932 the United States experienced four extended banking panics chasing customers to withdraw making the situation worse. Chasing 1/5th of the banks to close. Another cause was the gold standard. Due to imbalances in trade tariffs both the US and our trading partners were both doing badly. Such imbalances gave rise to significant foreign gold outflows to the United States, which in turn threatened to devalue the currencies of the countries whose gold reserves had been depleted. Consequently, causing a depressing in the US and Europe.165

  8. 1: The first two photos to catch my eyes also seem to be the two most popular of her photos, that being the ones with the dirty mom with her children hiding behind her and the girl stand with the stained dress. But the one that really stuck out to me among all of them is the photo where the farmer is standing on top of a bunch of dirt that seems to be covering his field of crops after the dust bowl. I knew that the bowl was awful due to that fact that it would get in your eyes and in your lungs, but I never thought about what happened to the dirt once the bowl settled. During a time where nobody could afford food but had to grow it themselves, so if all of your crops are destroyed then a lot of people most likely starved to death.(151)

2: The first cause of the Great Depression was the stock market crash of 1929 on the dreaded Black Tuesday where a lot of Americans had invested into the stack market and when it crashed the all lost the money the had put into it. In conjunction to the stock market crash one fourth of banks in America had shut down because they were unable to hand out loans to people or businesses and president Hoover and his administration did almost nothing to solve the issues it seemed like, so much so that they even named their shantytown “Hooverville”. The before mentioned dust bowl was a massive factor as well with the dirt getting into people and cattle’s lungs when they breathe and burying everything including crops.(127)
