Watergate: The Scandal That Shook America's Confidence

President Nixon, as we'll see this week, made some brilliant moves while in office. It seems, though, he couldn't "get out of his own way" and his 2nd term ended with the humiliation of the Watergate scandal.

Use the following resources to gain background knowledge on the Watergate scandal:

  1. First I'm kind of sad I wont get to hear more about this because it is actually very interesting. Second is, the first step Nixon should have done was not do it at all. I know that's cliche to say but it's true. He could have easily gotten out of all of this mess if he had never let a scandal happen in the first place. But to go along with it, I think Nixon lowkey set himself up. He placed the tape recording thing in his office while he was President. Although he refused to hand in the tapes, that would ultimately shut this whole thing down, he did resign which made him look just as guilty. The fact that he (i'm not sure if it was just Nixon but) they whoever, fired the top 2 guys that were trying to figure this whole mess out. Which then again shows how guilty Nixon was. The fact that Nixon kept on resisting to turn in the tapes kept making himself look more guilty. He honestly put himself in that situation. There most likely wouldn't have been much humiliation if he had just handed over the tapes. Yes it kept him in the "clear" but truthfully it made him look more guilty. I think it's kind of funny that a few of the guys that worked with Nixon on this "plan" ended up ratting him out. They took their own plea instead of covering for the President. Which is sort of ironic. I can only imagine if something like this happened in today's age. Which it sort of did, with Trump except for the fact that he didn't commit a crime or resign and won over the impeachment. Funny how the world seems to never change on a few things. 2. This was what I jotted down in my notes for the video
So in June 17 1972 two men were arrested for breaking in to the watergate hotel they had links to Nixon’s re-election. They were two cia members I think. Then Nixon fires his White House council John dean. Also everything that was said in the White House was tape recorded and when the government asked for the tapes he refused to turn them over and tried to derail the scandal. They kept demanding the tapes but Nixon just edited them and turned those over instead off the real ones. Then he had three articles of impeachment which were Obstruction of justice. Misuse of power. And Failure to comply with the subpoena. and then Nixon left office or resigned. He very strongly involved with the cover up of the watergate scandal. 100

  3. In June in the middle of nixon’s 2nd presidential campaign, 2 men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic national convention located in the Watergate offices hence the name”watergate”. The men were caught wiretapping the DNC office for Nixon and Nixon refused to give over the tapes and even tried to edit them. Which was the first “no-no” for lack of a better term as he shouldn’t have done it in the first place and shouldn’t have dealt with it in a manner that made him seem as if he was more guilty of something horrible. He should’ve handled it by either controlling the media and both sides or just fessing up and downplaying it.

  5. The Watergate scandal was one of the things that ruined Nixon’s presidency. One of the major reasons that he went down with the watergate scandal was the letter that one of the two guys that got caught wrote. This sent Nixon into a panic asking two of his friends to resign because they were also part of the scandal. But by this time it was too late and he got three things of impeachment passed on him. I do believe that they could have busted Nixon faster and handled this situation a whole lot better than what they actually did. (100)
