George Washington: America's First Sweetheart

It is as obvious today as it was in the late 18th Century that George Washington would be our first elected president under the Constitution.  Any time our country needed a leader, he was called.  He came out of retirement to chair the Constitutional Convention.  He did the same when his country needed her first president.  Washington was the only president ever to be unanimously elected.

Imagine having a unanimously elected president today!  There would be no need for debates, caucuses, primaries, commercials or campaigns.  Think back to 2008.  Then Senator Obama was incredibly popular in many parts of the country...and his victory over McCain was nowhere near unanimous.  It is almost too difficult to imagine ever having another man (or woman) collect every single electoral vote.

Examine these two images.  One depicts the day Washington was inaugurated on March 4, 1789.  The other is of his death.  What do these two pictures tell you about the relationship Washington had with his country?  Do you think we'll ever have another "Washington" in America?

  1. In my opinion, Washington had a great love for this country. And his country loved him. In the picture of Washington being inaugurated, there are lots of people in the crowd. This shows that the people were glad he was going to be the next president and they supported him. In the picture of Washington dying there are people on the ground crying. This shows me that the nation thought very highly of him. They were sad when he died. I find it interesting that he was unanimously voted in. Even the very next election between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson was divided. I do not think there will ever be a president that is unanimously voted into office. Our country is more divided. We have different parties now. I don't think we will ever have a president that is as loved and admired as Washington was. (147)

  2. The first picture of his inauguration says that he and his country were very excited about him becoming president and him becoming the first president. It was a unanimous vote which clearly states that the country really wanted him as their president. The second picture of his death says that the country was very sad and depressed about him dying. They really liked him as a president and a person and when he died they were heartbroken. Well I think that we will have another “Washington” who will be as loved as he really was and who will make good decisions like he did but I don’t think that we will ever have another unanimous vote for another president because people in the world are too different and I think if a vote was starting to get unanimous then someone would vote the other way just to be funny or to be different.(153)

  3. Washington was a great man. He truly loved our country and we know that because of the great lengths he went to in the Revolutionary War to help our soilders survive. He is one of the main reasons we are the country that we are today. In the 1st picture (the inguration picture) you could definatly see the love our country had for him, as well as the love he had for our country. Then the picture of his death depicted the great loss we went through when he died. But, in that same picture it also showed that he knew he served his country well and that he was ready to leave. I personally do not think there will ever be another man like Washington serving our country any time soon, if ever. But, if there is a man who wants to be like him they will truly need to step up to the plate because they have a lot to live up to. (165 words)

  4. George Washington was a great man and a wonderful president. He did a lot of great, important, and remembered things for this country. Since this country is so much more different than it was in the 1700s I don’t think there is any chance of getting a unanimous vote for any of the upcoming president. I think it would be good if there was a unanimous choice for president but I also believe that God made everyone different for a reason that means everyone has their own opinion. The picture of George Washington’s inauguration shows how much he was loved, appreciated, respected, and how important he was to the country. It looks like people look at him as the “king.” I think they think of him as a father figure, someone who protects them and has their best interest at mind. I also think they trust him to make the right decisions as president. The picture of his death ,to me, looks like people are sad. In this picture I see what look like angels taking him into a ray of light. To me that says they thought he was a very godly man and were sure he was going to heaven. He looks like he is in what we think of as an “angel costume.”

  5. I think the first picture shows how America really liked him, which is obvious by the unanimous election, but even without that fact, the picture does a very good job in showing that America was excited about his election. Although we will have widely loved and great presidents in the future, I don't think it is possible to ever have another unanimous election, because their are too many states to win over. The second picture shows that America mourned when their president died, which shows that Washington had a personal relationship with a lot of the people that elected him. I don't think that any future president could have that kind of relationship with people, because all of the security and publicity that presidents get now. The other thing that really stood out to me is that this picture gives the impression that Washington had a relationship with God, because he is surrounded by angels and in white robes that are a common portrayal of Heaven.

  6. I also think Washington was a great man and a great president, who was loved and respected by all. I do not think there will ever be another president who has the character or leadership that Washington had. I also do not think that there will never be another president who is unanimously elected. No campaigns or commericals? That would mean no money for the candidate's party. The picture of his inauguration shows people who are cheering who appear to be very happy. As for the second picture, I agree with David and Tori that it does look like they thought he was going to heaven and believed in God. (109)

  7. I think that Goerge Washington was just about the most liked president that this country has ever had. He was so important to the early developement of our country. On his inauguration day all the crowds were excited and cheering which shows that he was well loved by pretty much everyone. He was a very good leader (But like everyone he made mistakes, although some might disagree). In the illustration of him dying it seems as if he is being treated like he is God by the angels. This implies that he was a believer because the are carrying him up to heaven. (104)

  8. In the first picture of George Washington being inaugurated, you can see that all the people are happy. Their hats are in the air, their arms are up, and they are cheering. The people are filled with joy. You can almost imagine being there with them in the big city. Everybody’s going crazy, you’re shouting at the top of your lungs, and you think Washington is a “super hero.”

Now the second picture says a lot. The people are on the ground crying which mean America misses him. The angels are giving Washington a “nice ride” into the shining light of heaven, so obviously he was a strong believer. He is wearing a nice robe. Washington was loved by young America. In some ways we need him back today to fix our country’s growing problems.

I don’t think there will ever be “another Washington.” The role of the president is a very difficult job, and I don’t think anyone else could play it better than Washington. (166)

  9. The first picture clearly shows what America thought about Washington being the first president. They were so excited and so happy that they just had to cheer and throw their hats into the air, as if they had finally graduated from college or won the super bowl. The second one shows the sadness and respect they felt in the mourners and the fact that they felt that he was sacred was shown in the position Washington was in as the angels began to lift him and in the words on the plaque. There will never be another Washington because the first one is always the greatest. (106)

  10. The first picture is George Washington being inaugurated as President. All the people in the crowd look happy and excited because he is going to be there very first President. They all should be excited because he got a unanamous vote. The second picture is showing when George Washington died and is going to Heaven. The people must have loved him as President because they look sad. And there are angels taking him up to Heaven. I don't think there will ever be another President like George washington or that there will be a unanamous vote again. It would be nice to have another President like him but it is very big shoes to fill. (114)

  11. George Washington has been the best president I think so far. I do not think anyone could ever meet the goals that he made. In the first picture it clearly shows that everyone is really excited that George Washington was going to be there new leader for their country. In the second picture George Washington death was a tragic death for our country. In the picture there are people on the ground crying. I do not think they could believe that he was gone. Maybe someone could be greater than our first leader George Washington, but they have very high goals to meet. (103)

  12. George Washington was one of the best presidents. I think that because he was the person that got us out of nothing. He made our country rise up. Our country was just nothing till Washington was our president. It was sad for everyone when Washington died. I thought it was hard to understand what you wanted me to do. The second thing is I think it would be crazy for a unanimously selected president. That is so bad cause the people wouldn't have a choice of a president. That would be bad because we don't know if the president was good at his job. That is what i think. (108)

  13. The two pictures are very beautiful. The first picture seems to tell me that Washington had a very good relationship with the citizens of America. The people in the first photo look happy and excited; not sad/hateful. The second picture shows people weeping over Washington’s death, and angels carrying him up. The angels seem to show that he was a believer in Jesus. The people weeping show that the people were sad that he was dead/dying because they’d miss their first president. I would like to think that we will have another Washington, but only time will tell.
