The Puritans in Massachusetts: Religious Nuts or Devout Disciples?

Welcome to the last blog of the first quarter.  Once again I'd like to say how much I appreciate the effort you all put into the comments each week.  It means a lot to me, as a teacher, to see you taking things so seriously. It does not go unnoticed.

We could spend the entire semester on the settling of the thirteen colonies, but we don't have that much time.  Each region, Southern, Middle and New England, was very distinct for political, religious and cultural reasons.  One of the most unique events in the colonial era occurred in the New England colony of Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Bay Colony (aka Massachusetts) was settled beginning in the 1630s by a religious group from Europe known as the Puritans.  These were men and women who were so dissatisfied by the state of religious affairs in England they thought it better to separate (which is why they were called Separatists) and start their own colony in America.  One of their earliest leaders, John Winthrop, wanted Massachusetts to be a "city upon a hill" for all the world to admire and imitate.

During the 1630s, over 20,000 people left England to join the Puritans in Massachusetts.  The colony continued to grow and thrive in the New World.

Puritans have acquired a bad reputation because of their strict adherence to the Bible.  The general stereotype of a Puritan is someone who never smiles or has any fun, always wears black, avoids all worldly pleasures, works all the time and when they are not working, they are reading the Bible or praying.  Basically, a real downer.

Part of this stereotype, like most stereotypes, comes from accurate aspects of the Puritan life that are merely exaggerated.  Visit this website for a description of Puritan beliefs.

Perhaps the biggest blunder in Puritan history is what has garnered much of the negative attention.  In the 1690s three women were suspected of "signing the Devil's compact", aka being witches.  Soon the accusations spread throughout the small town of Salem, Massachusetts until a court had to be established to determine who was and was not a witch.  If you denied being a witch but accused someone else of being a witch, it usually backfired because "it takes one to know one".  Eventually the wife of the Governor of Massachusetts was accused of witchcraft and the Governor put a stop to the proceedings. Must be nice to have power, huh?

When it was all said and done, about 20 people were hung for being witches.  Two dogs were condemned as well.  Watch this video and read this primary source to get a better understand of the events surrounding the Salem Witch Trials.  Use the comments section as a sounding board for your thoughts on this historical event.  What is the problem when everyone jumps on board with an idea, even if the idea is ridiculous?

*Remember, your comments are due by Friday this week because it is the last day of the quarter.  Also, since this blog counts as 100 points, your comments must be a minimum of 200 words this week.

  1. Wow, I learned a lot about the puritans and what they believed, when, when I read the short story about them. I think the story about the people hanging twenty people for being accused for witch craft was not fair. I don’t their method of deducing who was and who wasn’t a witch was fair what so ever. They should have been smarter when it involves someone’s own life on the line. The puritans suffered a lot and made a very big difference in the making of America. Oh I almost forgot to mention, if you don’t believe me when I say they were crazy when they hung all those people for witch craft, then this will convince you. Two dogs were accused for witch crafty and hanged. (129)

  2. The article about Puritans and their beliefs was very helpful. I already knew some of the information because the lady for my speech was Puritan, but I learned even more about them. I think it is really interesting that they believed that Jesus died on the cross for certain people. They also believe that the things that we do on earth decided our mortal fate. Nobody is perfect and can go all of their life without sinning; if this was true none of us would be going to heaven! Puritans believed that salvation came through works and good deeds, but salvation is free for anyone that believes in Jesus Christ. Part of the stereotype belief about Puritans is true, but some of it is not true. The Salem Witch Trials were really interesting to me as well. What I thought was kind of strange is that during some of the trials people who did not sign the "Devil's Compact" and people who were not engaging in witchcraft actually confessed that they were witches. I mean why would you purposefully act like you were a witch and get killed for something you did not even do? People even used the term "witch" as an offense to others. If you did not like someone you could accuse them of being a witch even when you knew they were not just so that they might be found guilty and would be killed, at least you will not have to worry about them anymore. The judges and people in these trials should have really considered that the people being accused could be innocent. Around 20 people died for being a witch, when they could have been innocent. All of these people just went with this idea of there being witches all around them. If these people hadn't done that, all of the others might not have been killed. I think we can learn a lesson from this to not just believe what everyone else believes. (331)

  3. This event sounds really bad, much like a nightmare in my mind. These women and men accusing each other of signing some contract with the Devil that means you’re a witch, just totally wow. I think about it like a disease, you start out with it and then you pass it on to others like when the accused witches started out being the accused then said different people where, but they still stayed in jail which I think is fair. If you can name other “witches” from the top of your head then it is lead to believe you are also. This was a huge problem for Salem. So many people died because of this because one or two people were originally accused of the “signing” and then from the sinful nature of human hearts made someone else, guilty or not, join in on the sadness. It isn’t even fair to be put in jail and then executed because of this because this is America! Didn’t the people who came here, maybe even the judge, come for the religious freedoms this country offers? If so, then why are these people persecuting other people because of their beliefs (even if the belief is not Christian but the opposite?) If that is why they came in the first place, they would be causing the same pain that happened to you to someone else in the free country America! (236)

  4. Wow. That was really interesting. It's hard to tell where truth ends and lies begin. Were the women faking their torture? I dont think so because they would not have afflicted themselves so cruelly even with reasons, right? The sad thing is the whole town just went and ageed without taking time to consider the consequences of if they were wrong or the methods they used to test if the accused were actually witches. The town didn't even stop to think about if the story was true. From what I've heard, they didn't argue about the possibilities of being wrong. Maybe some of the girls were faking.Whatever the case I think we can assume that the townspeople made a hasty unwise choice.I think we can safely say that the dogs were not witches because dogs don't have the knowledge or understanding of humans that God gave us.
The problem with jumping to the conclusion that the girls were witches is that you could miss some evidence or obvious172 conclusion if you don't work together as a united front and think LOGICALLY(emphasis on the word logically). I learned that witchcraft is a lot scarier than I imagined and that the people of Salem should have been a little slower to judge since they most likely did hang innocent people.(224 words)

  5. What an interesting topic! First off, the topic began with Puritans. Puritans are pretty much like most Christians, but have different ideas about life after death. They beleived that Jesus died ONLY for people who would eventualy beleive in him. We know that the Bible stated that Jesus died for everyone. The Puritans also beleived that your salvation depended on your choices you make on earth. Now let's talk about the Salem witch trials. All of this was terrible. People turning on their neighbors, all because rumors started up that witches had been making people have mental problems. In my opinion, the three young women that started this whole thing probably didn't know who to blame, so they convicted someone they hated. Anyway, the trials were unfair because the judges never listened to the so called "witches" testimonies. The witnesses used agenst the witches were probably confused and scared that the person that was being condemned was controling their every move. This made them think that it was true and they thought that they were being forced to bite or pinch themselves. Finaly, the govener ended all the crazy trials when his wife was convicted. This story is a good example of when people know something is wrong, but don't do anything about it because they are afraid to be punished. Ex.WWII Holocost (225)
(Why did the court convict dogs? Was it like: "HELP! My dog is hurting my son's head so much he got a fever! MY DOG'S A WITCH!!!!!!"?)

  6. I am kind of confused by this. Honestly, I don't know what to think about the witch trials, except that they got waaaaay out of hand. It was so crazy, I mean, seriously, they accused two DOGS of being witches!!! They were being so paranoid and bull-headed! They were scared, I probably would be too, and they had it set in their minds that every person that was even accused of being a witch was instantly guilty and have to be hanged as quickly as possible. I'm sure if they had had their way, they would have skipped the whole trial and gone straight to the noose. I think the little girls were faking what happened to them. They were little kids, and to them, it was probably just a sort of game. Besides, children are prone to exaggeration anyway. Not everyone in the Salem witch trials is to blame, some probably were only involved with it because they didn't want to be accused of something they weren't. I think the whole thing was really crazy, especially relying on a few little children to choose who will die. (203)

  7. This information about Puritans gave me alot of things to think about. One of the things was how they viewed salvation. They believe that only certain people could earn salvation, and that Jesus only died for certain people. I am so glad that this isn't true, because very few of us would go to heaven. They were also very religous, and in their spare moments they would study the bible. They also didn't believe in having fun. They would work all day and study the bible. One of the things that this information gives me is that they didn't like witches, and persecuted those who did whitchcraft and stuff. This all started when a few young girls started to have sezuires all of a sudden, and would start screaming at random times. People in the community came to the conclusion that it was witchcraft. They started arresting people who they thought signed some sort of compact with the devil, or was involved with witchcraft. This went on for a long time until the governer put a end to it. At that time all the people who were accused were released from the prison. When it was over it was estimated that about twenty people were hung for being withches. Sadly some people weren't even withches. Some of them in their trials amitted to being a witch and talking with the devil when they really didn't. Why they did this I don't know. Some of them also died while being held in jail. A few dogs were even convicted of having something to do with witchcraft. I don't really understand this considering dogs don't have souls. One of the things that I can not grasp is that some of them accused others, because they wanted them to get out of their hair. I thought Puritans were very deep in their beliefs. Why would they want to wish someone who believes just like them to have a horrible death????(334)

  8. Wow! Being a Puritan was like being socially awkward. The Puritans was really into trying to please God. The article basically said that the Puritans had to do this thing or else they would not go to heaven. They believed that if you were allowed some mistakes, and still have a spot saved for them in heaven. The witch story in Salem was very interesting. It started the deaths of many others. It started with a group of girls that accused people. I think the reason so many people were accused because a person did not like this certain person and accused the person of being a witch to have them killed or put in jail. I mean who would not want that kind of power in their hands. The trials of the wife Corey must have been weird to see because the afflicted person would be doing the same thing as the wife Corey was doing. She was hanged on September 22, 1692. It is sad to hear that 24 people died because of this. It would be really terrible to have many people be against you while you are on trial accusing you of something you did not do. I think that half of the people against the tried people did not even know what the person did. The trials of these accused witches are called the Salem Witch trials of 1692. (234)

  9. From reading the descriptions of Puritans, they seemed like people who thought reading the Bible and good works was the only way to get to heaven. They thought perfection was the best. Out of all the people for witches to be involved, you wouldn't think it would be the PURitans, would you? This was a huge event in Massachusetts. I can't imagine living in that time period in Salem, wondering if someone you knew was secretly a witch. In this supposedly godly place, people were worshipping Satan! The enemy of God! And can you imagine being the ones accused of being a witch? People were hanged because of this. What if the innoncent were killed? You could just suggest that someone is a witch and put them in danger of being killed. Supposedly only a few people actually signed "the Devil's compact", but it turned out more and more people were confessing that they were also witches. This whole idea is pretty wild. It shows that while everyone else is doing something, we should stand for what we believe in and what is right. Three women were accused, and 20 ended up being killed. This event spread and affected people who did not even want to get involved in this mess. (210)

  10. This was just pure insanity. The sad thing is the puritans were trying to get away for religious freedom yet it seems religion controlled every aspect of the life. Another thing that baffled me is that no one spoke up for the women being killed. These people were concerned with being holy that they turned to murder. This was basically a religious dictatorship. 25 innocent people were killed for absolutely nothing! It just makes me wonder were there brains were during this time clearly they were not using them. The puritan people stood by and watched them die. This no questioning attitude is was lead to the countless genocide. The holocaust is an example of this. Millions of Jews were killed. Not far from was I used to live a man told about a hundred people to kill themselves because he said he was Jesus. This just proves that there is an animal in all of us. They were trying to make Salem pure but there acts have tainted this places history. This reminds me of the Why are Christians so videos we watched in chapel. It makes me thing of one of there phrases why are Christians so judgmental.

  12. Continued. The movie was really creepy in the begining. It is so sad that there is with craft in the world. I was confused about the twenty people who were murdered. Where they innocent? I also didn't understand the trial. It kind of makes sence about accusing and then being found guilty. But in a situation like that it is probaly okay to assume that some people could be irresponsible and try to pass the blame around. The last thing I didn't understand was the people that were suffering, I don't understand how they were being hurt, and what is the devils compact how do people sign it? 13. First of all to start my blog, I would like to say how unexpected the video was. I thought it was going to be animated, but then it got interesting. I thought it was weird how they would do it to children. They would also get other women with them to do it. It doesn't say what they did to the kids, but I'm just glad that wasn't my mom. Also I thought it was smart how the judge used their own testimonies against them. The next thing is the Puritan's beliefs. Their society was basically anti-social. They would just work all day and go home to study. I would absolutely hate to be a Puritan. There would never be any sports or fun at all! They would try to be one of the perfect ones who went to heaven. They also thought that Jesus only died for certain people. It would suck to believe this because you might mess up one time and think your going to hell. It really confuses me how you could believe this and become a witch. It's crazy how just three women were convicted, but 20 of them died. That's just shows how one bad decision can affect the people around you.(209)

  14. The story of the Puritans was very interesting because it sounded as if the Puritans were very boring people and tried to be as perfect as can be. And then the story of the Salem Witch Trials was very scary to me. That would stink to know someone all your life then all of a sudden see them have uncontrollable and convulsive seizures and see them screaming. It would be even worse to have the physicians say that it was from Satan. I would hate to die while being hung or crushed under the weight of rocks. It would be very painful and would be very very slow. I feel sorry for all the families going through this, but especially for the families of the nineteen victims. One of the worst parts would be that they were innocent people. That was scary for me to read that during the accusation of Martha Corey that whenever she would move so did the accusers. When I read about “the specter of a black man bending over the accused and heard the drum beat calling the witches to convene on the meetinghouse lawn.” That would be the scariest thing for me to see. And then when Lieutenant Fuller saw the body Goodwife Corey, I would have stopped reading if I didn’t need the 100 so badly. After I finished the whole article I pictured the part of the accusers being tortured and that was it. Reading about how if Goodwife Corey did not bite her lip the accusers were bitten, and if she did not pinch her fingers they would be pinched. (270)

  15. Wow I think those puritans are pretty strict. I wonder why they always wear black. I can't believe that they were unable to have fun. Their lives must have been horrible. I am glad I am not a puritan. If those witches were puritans than they must have been completely against their religion. I think it was going a little far to make a whole state for a religion. The fact that they believed that only certain people can go to heaven is outrageous. Jesus was clear about everyone going to heaven. On to the fact of the witch trial, I can believe that the people make connections with the devil but I don't know about the extent they went to. All of the little details they had were outrageous. I was laughing at the beginning of the video because the animation was so bad but the facts were so true. It is amazing that the records they had from the courts were just so specific and are still readable today. I can not personaly say if the witches were guilty or not because I wasn’t at the trial. It was sad to hear I think 30 people were accused and probably not all guilty.(206)

  16. The whole story on Witch Craft is really wrong in so many different ways. How they killed twenty plus people for being accused of being a witch just seems crazy to me. They considered a witch to be someone from the devil that signed a compact agreeing to haunt people. People back then were so uneducated. The people that were hung for being a "witch" are falsely accused. Accusing two dogs for being witches is amazingly incorrect. So back to the Holocaust oh I mean the Witch Craft. The Holocaust is so similar to the Witch Craft. Millions of Jews were murdered because of one man's opinion. Not cool Hitler. You messed up your reputation in America. Little girls and even old ladies were killed because of being accused of being a witch. I didn’t know about this Witch Craft before this topic. I think it was a very bad decision to decide to kill all of those people for no reason what so ever. Someone needed to speak up in that situation. If someone would have spoken up they would have probably got killed or something like that. The sources were very helpful. This is insane! The puritans in Massachusetts were religious nuts indeed. 17. Okay I’m like Holt: I’m totally confused. Both the Puritan beliefs and the witchcraft stuff kinda made my thoughts jumbled. But I’m gonna do the best I can and sorry if this is not what you’re looking for Mr. H. Starting with the Puritan beliefs under the Total Depravity part… I thought most of this corresponds with our beliefs. Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. Sin entered the world. When we are born, we are born sinners and have to accept Jesus as our Savior to “sanctify” our bodies. Under Unconditional Election… This says that God pretty much chooses certain people to spread his Word and get salvation. I believe that God has certain people he appoints to be missionaries, but salvation is for everyone. God doesn’t pick certain people to be saved. Under Limited/Particular Atonement… This says that Jesus or the Lamb of God died on the cross for certain people. Again, God didn’t appoint certain people that Jesus was to die for. Under Irresistible Grace… I think this goes along with our beliefs too. It says that the Holy Spirit can change our hearts. Also, we can be changed by what we hear or just by feeling something in our hearts. And the last one Preservation of the Saints… This goes back to God “choosing” certain people to receive salvation which is not true. Okay so that’s my thoughts on that… On to the witchcraft stuff… I don’t have as much to say about this because I didn’t understand this really. So pretty much there were these 3 younger girls that had “possession –like qualities.” They were questioned about this and told about some other possible witches in the town. Many people died because they were thought to be witches. They were killed in awful ways. Salem was thrown into a frenzy and in the midst of all this, they blew this issue to epic proportions. They were accusing each other of being witches and I don’t really think they knew exactly what to do. I thought it was strange that during the trial, the woman and the girls were doing the same things (biting their lips, shifting their feet). (367)

  18. Witches worship the devil and apparently were so cruel to children according to the video. How could anyone be so cruel. I think the answer is that when you worship satan you are mean and cruel. There is a story in the Bible about when Jesus cast a demon into the pigs and the pigs became crazy i think think this is why the witches would be so crazy just like the pigs. Seeing the story about the witches accusing two dogs of being witches..might as well go yell at a wall for being a grape! I especially loved how hairbrush said that the puritans always wanted to be perfect so it was really weird for the witches to be messing with them. One big problem with accusing people of being witches was you had no idea of kmowing if they were really witches, so they were "assuming" they were witches when they could be hanging innocent people...this makes no sense to me whatsoever. I bet the puritans thought that they were the best because they were "perfect" and so they thought they were going to heaven. The Bible says "no one can come to the father except through me. So technically they would not be going to heaven..unless they got saved.(209)

  19. Well first of all, that video was a little creepy and scary in the beginning:( .The Puritans thought that the only way to get to heaven was by reading the Bible, and doing good works. They also thought that Jesus died for only certain people. The Puritans did not like the witches and also people who did witchcraft. This stuff all began in January of 1692, in Salem Village Massachusetts. When a couple of girls started to have some crazy behavior (like some had seizers or blasphemous screaming), they thought that Satan had caused this. Tituba was one of the three ladies to be interviewed. She was a slave and had confessed that she had seen the devil in a hog or great dog form. Martha Corey was a member of the Puritan congregation. She had turned out to be a witch. March through the fall, many people were being charged, examined, tried and was put to death. Nineteen people from the witch-hunt had been hanged, crushed to death by stones, and four died in prison. It just got worse after this. I just can’t believe that people were doing these things and also getting involved. I feel bad for the people who were not even doing these things, and still had to suffer what the other people had to. I’m just glad that I was not alive during this time:). (232)

  20. Puritans were, in my opinion, exactly what their name says- pure. At least they tried to be pure, perfect, and actually quite boring with everything they did. They fasted, wore plain clothes, and concentrated on living the way they interpreted that the Bible told them to. The Salem Witch Trials took crazy to a whole new level to me. It seems that the Puritans were so set on being perfect and pure that when someone made the slightest mistake they were a witch. I understand that the trials started out when young women were "afflicted". It just seems really fishy to me. I don't understand what was really wrong with them, but I think they were probably just acting and faking it all. After that it seems like everyone just started panicking and things got blown out of proportion. Suddenly, to them, everyone who did wrong was a witch. It is simply awful that they would kill innocent people just because someone accused them, and most of the time the people accusing them didn't have any proof at all. They even killed two dogs for goodness' sake! The people of Salem were paranoid and crazy when it came to witches and "signing the Devil's contract".

  21. Wow, very interesting topic! Anyway, these Puritan people seem very strict. They kind of just send off the "we are WAY better you" vibe, ya know? The dress all black, never smile, never want to have fun, and are always about following the proper rules, probably only hang out and associate with others of their kind (I could never be a Puritan...). Not to mention, their beliefs are all kinda out of whack. None of it makes sense; it made me confused. It seems like one of those situations when you're little, and your parents tell you about something (take the tooth fairy so example). It quite obviously doesn't make sense AT ALL to most people, but you believe it anyway. You've got no better mind to tell you otherwise. That's probably exactly what happened for these Puritans. They just believe whatever the leader of the church says, and that's that. No background research. Seems weird... Next, about the Salem Witches. Cool video by the way. I believe that this was a little ridiculous though. I mean, they have way too much boringness filling their lives. They probably just wanted a little fun, which actually turned into people being killed because of silly rumors. Many innocent people went to court and were sentenced to death for something they didn't do! Can you imagine? It was probably just people who didn't like them for some reason. Like someone saying, "They're a witch!" and automatically pretty much everyone else in the colony believing it. Now, true, some people actually WERE witches, but most weren't. And finally, about the two dogs dying for "being witches"... I don't even want to comment on that one. *que applause* Good job, Puritans... (286)

  22. After reading these articles, and watching the informative video, I have a different point of view on this important event in history. The Puritans were portrayed very differently in this than in our history books, I think. I have a much different perspective of them. In our history books, to me they seemed just like strong in their faith believers. In this, I thought they seemed a little hypocritical. They reminded me of the Pharisees in the Bible. The Puritans seemed too religious. It seemed as though thei lives was a tradition instead of a relationship with our Lord and Personal Saviour. Now I am confused as to which one the Puritans are most like. It didn't make sense how they wanted one of thei own Puritans, and a very popular and well known good reputation at that, to be put to death in such a horrible, gruesome way. If you are a Christian, I thought Satan couldn't come into you like he did to some. Wouldn't the Puritans know that? They did spend most of their time reading the Bible. Although it seems they were mostly about the good works and if you had a good reputation or not. And this is totally absolutely against the Holy Bible. About the majority of the people all going along together against the " witches", I don't think that was fair. It makes me wonder why that stubborn judge just could not at all believe the woman that she hadn't done anything to the girls or been doing witchcraft. Was he just doing what the crowd thought was correct? Or did he actually truly believe that she was guilty. It was kind of creepy how the girls mimicked her though. Gives me the creeps and chills! It is a scary subject. And the poor innocent people put to death! It shows how when people team up against eachoyher, it can have so much power and effect so many lives.I don't think one person like the governer or judge should have too much power anyways. I don't think I liked this topic... (327)

  23. Like you said, most of these faiths were merely over exaggerated. The main point that I saw in the article that seemed most important was the fact that the Puritans were so called overly obsessive over God's grace. Now at first I didn't see the problem with being obsessed with something God gave us. He gave us grace. ONLY by God's grace that we are saved. There is no problem with being obsessed with that, but when it comes down to where they were thinking through grace so hard that they changed what really happens with grace. In my opinion, the gift of grace is actually quite simple. Jesus is handing you a gift and if you take it, it's yours. That's just it. The is no other side to it or this doesn't contradict that. They are just making it much too confusing. No contradictions. If you sinned you ask God to forgive and he forgives you because he loves you unconditionally. Nothing more to it. God doesn't pick and choose who he wants to come to Heaven. You don't go to Heaven by works, but by you salvation through Jesus Christ. Like Lee said, they were constantly trying to please God. Now my question is how did they know when they finally 'pleased' Him? When do they know they have done enough? And by the way, their religion sounds a lot like the Catholic religion. What was the point of coming to America to have your own religion when you barely or don't even change what you already did practice? And lastly, if they spent all day reading their Bibles, then why aren't they getting any of the salvation and Jesus Christ terms correct? It just doesn't add up. They look like complete hypocrites compared to what I have see in our book. They seemed like good Christian people who wanted to worship God the right way, but now it doesn't seem much like that. I don't know if that was what you wanted me to get out of this but that is what I thought.
Next, the WITCHES. This is just plain bizarre. Nowadays,(I like that word) when I think of a witch, I think of the person you dress up as on Halloween or the nasty name I guess you would call someone, but now I definitely do not want to be a witch on Halloween. This is truly scary and extremely sad, but also very demented at the same time. This totally loses me on my last opinion on the Puritans. They seemed like they wanted to always do the right thing and be perfect, but then all of a sudden! BAM! They are witches and horrible people! The judges most definitely exaggerated with the whole witch thing because in the end they admit that they killed 20 innocent people! 20! I don't know about you, but I would feel terrible! Why couldn't the judges just believe these woman who were so desperately wanting to prove their innocence. Then you have this other group of people who were NOT witches who automatically just admit they are witches, and the court doesn't believe them either?!? I don't know about you, but I am seriously confused here. What is the point of having a court if no one believe no one? And how can you have court with no evidence? How do you prove you innocence? This was just a horrible chain reaction from just three people messing around with witchcraft. Thanks guys! Way to go! Now everyone is a witch. Lastly, why in the world were dogs convicted of witchcraft? I just don't understand..sooo confused... BTW I think the judges for these cases either had a problem with power or took advantage of it. 24. This stuff was scary and confusing. To start off with, I think these kids had a cold and were milking it more than their father would the cows. I mean unless they weren’t Christians there is no way this creepy stuff could happen. But then later on people start to catch on and understand that if they say someone is a witch that they will get in trouble. I suppose you could say that these puritans weren’t as pure as people thought they were. I think that this is horrible and that if you hate someone so much that you would lie to have them killed, you may as well have gone ahead and shot them yourselves! But then you have to look at the history of why people would think these things… and they still seem crazy! I mean selling your soul to the Devil? Puh-leeze, why in the world would the Devil use humans to scare other humans when he could easily do it by blowing out a few candles and moving furniture?! But I guess when you think about it, throughout the history of the universe people have always tried to kill the ones that don’t fit in. I also would say that this human nature mainly came from the Fall. It’s a sad world, a sad sad world.(222)
