The French & Indian War: The War That Made America

So here we are at the close of the first quarter and we find ourselves fighting a war against France.  The British colonists, who are citizens of England but live in North America, have been asked to take up the sword alongside Britain's native allies to fight off the French.  The outcome of this war will basically determine which European country controls North America, so much is at stake.  On top of that, the natives who allied with the British will want to be appeased and/or left alone after the war.  Will potential native conflict lead to trouble in the colonies?

For this week's blog, watch this video and visit this website for more information on the F/I War.  On the website, be sure to read these three articles: Incidents leading up to the F/I War, French & Indian War/Seven Year's War and Treaty of Paris 1763.  In the comments section, please explain why this conflict was so important to the development of America as a country.

  1. The great awakening was when the religious people were just ok, but then they got on fire for the religion. This took pale in the early part of the 18th century. They had reflifles and large meetings to talk about a new denomination. There were babtist and Methodist and Presbyterian, they had about what we have now. I was very excited when the guy got "shocked", I thought it was going to be better. I am glad that this people started religion because now I have a church to go

  3. Because Britain won the war, the colonists stayed British. If the French had won the war, then the colonists would have became French I think. The French might not have ever made the colonists pay taxes and treat them like poop like the British did, therefore the colonists would not have ever fought the British and gained their independence. And if the colonies had never gained their independence then they would not have ever become their own country and would still be controlled by France today and all “Americans” would be “French”. If the French had beat the British then the colonists might have fought France one day for their freedom. I guess we will never know. (112)

  4. The seven years’ war was about economics just like many other wars. Mercantilism was the key economic theory of the British colonies. The French and Indian War began after a series of incidents in the upper Ohio River valley which Brittan and France both thought was theirs. The French and Indian War began in 1754 and ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The war provided Great Brittan enormous territorial gains in North America. The French and Indian war both sides had their native allies the French had many allies but Brittan only had a few allies one of which was the Iroquois confederacy which consisted of 6 different native American tribes this was the largest confederacy in the northern part of north America

  5. The French and Indian war has many interesting things I didn’t know about. This was about the war but it was also about the Albany Plan of Union. The war formed the Americans into more of a nation, because if they didn’t join together they would be killed. The comic that was made by Benjamin Franklin was also a very important thing that reminds us of this even today. The colonists had to join together and live or we would never have had America. This made the French have less territory than they did. The Treaty of Pairs 1763 gave the British the land east of the Mississippi River, and the French lost everything in America. (116)

  6. During the 'Seven Year War' which was actually the 9 year war, Britain and France had a interesting war / part in history. As Ben Franklin wanted this Albany Plan of union to work, as much as it didn't it more than likely helped our country out. As the war went on, the thirteen colonies actually more or less united. If the didn't unite they would have been killed. The comic that Franklin made was about being one and the separateness of the thirteen colonies, made a difference on the out come of the war. Since the French lost everything, and since Britain won, France is no longer in the picture. (125)

  7. The reason I think this is so important to American history is because if the French would have won the seven year war the colonies might have been taken over by the French. Without this happening there would have been French in modern day America. If the British would not have driven them out of North America the colonies would have had to coexist with the French and their Native American allies. The proclamation line was a good idea but none of the colonists obeyed it and they just fought a war for that very territory. All in all I think the French and Indian war was very important to American history.

  8. First of all, France and Great Britain were not friends. They hated each other because they both wanted to be the most powerful. They fought over American land which led The French and Indian War. The name of the war makes it sound like if was France vs. Native Americans, but it was really those two people fighting together against the British and their colonies. Both countries were trying to gain Native American allies, which was easier for the French to do because France wanted trade in American unlike how Britain wanted the land which was owned by the Natives.

I am just wondering, what if France had won the war? Would we be here now? Probably not. A little while after the French and Indian War, the colonies and Great Britain fought in the Revolutionary War. If France had won The 7 Years War, there would not have been a war between the colonies and Great Britain (the Revolutionary War), and we would not have won that war and become a free country. And that is important to our history because if all of this had not happened, we would not be the United States of America.

  9. The Great Awakening was a time of religious revival in some of the colonies. Like the video said, the colonists went from religious, to super religious. The Great Awakening not only revived current religions, but it also started new ones like Methodists, Baptists, and more. This time in history, people really based their lives and actions on the bible and religion. At this point, it almost consumed their whole lives! I think without the Great Awakening, we wouldn't have fought for the religious rights as much as we did, so I think we should appreciate all of the people who were involved in this time. (105)

  10. If the French had won the war, America might have had a different outcome. The thing is, the French did not win so we will never know. If the British did not win then the Declaration of Independence might not exist. The reason why there was a declaration in the first place was because America wanted freedom from Great Britain. If the French won the war then France would have controlled most of America. And if the colonies were happy with France then they would not have wanted independence. Another big thing was the Great Awakening. It was a time of going back to religion. We might not have as much religion or the same religion we have today if it were not for the Great Awakening. Words that we say today come from British words or are British words. Many people say Autumn instead of Fall for the season. It is a British word or that is what BBC News said. If the French won, America might be a lot different today. (174

  11. This war was important to the developement of America as a country because we most likely wouldn't even be America without it. We would probably have some weird name that I can't pronounce! Do I hear a why? That would be because the war was fought by many different countries: Britain, France, Spain, the Native Americans, and others. The reason we have the names of cities we have and speak the language we speak is all because the British won! Of coarse, in later times, we came to disagree with Britain which led to the yet another war but we do have them to thank for the beginning of our country. And if we hadn't had the war in the first place, who knows where we would be! We could have been just a bunch of wild indians.... literally! (139)

  12. The French-Indian war was fought over four things: trade, land, slaves, and of course money. The French were in control early in the war but Britain persevered and ended up winning the whole thing by going into French territory and just overrunning them. While Britain won the war, they actually ended up with less land than they started with and an even bigger problem than the French: the Native Americans. In the following years the natives fought the British and never succeeded but did kill a few Brits. In the end, the war brought on a revival in religion and a new form of government that formed some of our beliefs today.

  13. If the French had not been defeated, the start of America may not have happened. Also, if they shared the land, they most likely would not be able to agree on making it a new nation. Britain and France probably wouldn’t even try to make it a nation because they would be too busy fighting and arguing about who owns what land. Thomas Jefferson would not have written the Declaration of Independence which means we might not have the rights we have now. Britain gained a lot of land from the French and Indian War. If the French still had land in America after the war, the colonists would have had to deal with Great Britain enforcing too many taxes and war with them while dealing with French attacks for land which probably would have made Britain lose its land. 14. The French and Indian war was a significant turning point of the development of America as a country in several ways. Economics and mercantilism were the main reason that led up to the friction between France and England. Both powerful countries wanted to have settlements in the Ohio River valley. The French already had forts and fur trading there. The French and Native Americans were allies until the British tried to claim this area too. The Native Americans used one country against the other. This caused the Native Americans to be real losers. The French were a main power until England sent William Braddocks over here. The friction between them caused France to loose their power. The English colonies concepts of born again religions, new ideas and the drive for more land west of the Appalachian mnts. Started our development into a nation that became the most powerful in the world. (152)

  15. Sorry my comment is so late. My moms best friend had a son who was in an accident yesterday morning and passed away.
Mercantalism was a the key economic thing of the brittish empire. Mercantalism was the idea and way of their trading system. That led, i think, to help people learn how to trade and get new things. If the brittish got something from the natives then they could spread the trading item across britian and eventually make it a worldwide thing. it was also the main cause of tension between england and france. Both countries wanted to have land that was in the Ohio River Valley area. But one of the many problems was, that the French already had fur trading and many forts set up there. So that made it especially hard for Brittian. Another very important thing was that, if Brittian had not won the war, then the Decleration of Independence most likely would not even exist. And if France had won the war, not only would the Decleration of independence not exist, we probably would not exist either! Which is kind of scary to think about.(170)

  16. The Seven Years' War was a "nine year war" so that was incorrectly labelled, but it had a significant impact on our country's history. It all started with a rivalry between Britain and France. Many things have rivalries, but they don't escalate into wars. When Britain and France wanted the same land, the two countries wouldn't give in. They were going to fight to the end. Both countries wanted to be the biggest, the richest, the most powerful. The hate between Britain and France became an overwhelming pit of burning rage. Even though the war was named after the French and Native Americans, many countries were involved, including Britain and Spain. The war fought between these countries was about more than just land. It was about trade, money, and slaves, too. Another contributor to the war was mercantilism. This was the belief that power came from riches. This drove most of the countries in this war. The start of our America today came from France's loss. If Britain hadn't have defeated the French, America would have some unpronounceable name, we would have never been born, and the Declaration of Independence would have never been written. How terrible. The freedom of this country wouldn't have come like that. It's possible that they wouldn't even be free today. But the British DID defeat the French, we are Americans, and most importantly, we ARE free. (232)

  17. I never realized before how much trading, slavery, and the trading of slaves had to do with the Seven Years War. In fact, in the video, for the first few minutes, he mainly talked about the importance of the above three things.

Also, Britain was doing very poorly in the beginning of the war, but then stepped up their game and had many victories/ captures along with the capture of Montreal (major for the British).

After the war, the territories changed a lot. The British, even after winning, didn’t get much land. Then began the importance of sugar, which the British had. So, this was a 9 year long war (mistakenly and confusingly called the Seven Years War) and a victory from the British. It was also a lesson for the British to slow down settlements to avoid future conflict.
