End Of The Semester: Reflection

Wow! You guys have worked very hard this semester! We have covered a lot of material and you have had great attitudes. Thank you for all of your hard work.

For this week's blog, please reflect on what we have studied since August.  In the comments section, discuss the one topic or lesson that has impacted you the most and why.  Please give this some real thought and reflection.

  1. This year was mostly about the Revolutionary War. I’ll touch on that because it’s pretty much what lasted the most for me. Especially Shays’ Rebellion. I think that it was actually my favorite part of this chapter. The reason it’s so memorable is because one man made a difference that lasted to this day. It really proves that sometimes you need to speak up to be heard. Thinking back, it wasn’t too respectful to those in authority. And, even though no respect was coming to Shays, it still wasn’t right to put lives in danger during a rant. But I understand taking it father since his legal action was ignored. Think about it, if you tried everything in your power to protest something you knew was wrong, would you leave it be after you got shot down by authority? God said to respect authority, yes, but you’re also supposed to stand up for what’s right.

In short: If you know it’s wrong, be loud and be heard. That’s what Shays conveyed to me.

See ya next year and Merry Christmas!

  2. I think what I liked most was the stuff leading up to the revolution. I really liked the Sons of Liberty. I thought that it was kind of cool how they had organized many things against the British. They were mad that the British were forcing them to pay taxes so they had to do something about it. They had secret meetings by the liberty pole or under the liberty tree. They would use violence sometimes. They tarred and feathered loyalists or British officials. All they were doing was going against the stamp act. They thought that all of these laws that parliament was passing wasn’t fair without them having anyone representing the Americans. I like how the Sons of Liberty didn’t give up and that they were going to do whatever it took to get what they thought they deserved.

  3. This semester, we went from learning about how the first Americans came about, to the rebellions, such as Shays’s Rebellion, because they thought the government wasn’t treating them fairly. My favorite part was probably learning about Samuel Adams’s contribution to America’s birth and growth. To start, he wanted to rebel against British rule. At the time, that was their government. He took action and rebelled. Decades (I think) later, farmers were rebelling against the American government. And you know what Samuel Adams said? He said that he thought people shouldn’t rebel against their own government! He went against the rebelling farmers. The farmers thought their government was unfair, so they did something about it. Sam thought his government was being unfair, so he did something about it. And then he told the farmers that they shouldn’t rebel. (137)

  4. The chapter that I liked the most was the Revolutionary War. I liked learning about the different battles and how the colonists won the war. One of the most interesting battles to me was the Battle of Bunker Hill. I liked it because the Commander of the militia was so low on ammo that he said “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.” I also thought that the lead up to the Revolutionary war. The colonists were angry of taxes from the British and I was impressed by the impactful role that Sam Adams and the Sons of Liberty played in the Revolutionary War. (107)

  5. I think my favorite sections were chapter 1 and 2-ish. I really enjoyed learning about the first Americans and how they got here. All the different theories for immigration like the Beringia Land Bridge Theory, Oceania Theory, and so on were fun to learn about. I also liked studying the Aztecs, Mayans, Inca, and Olmec because I had heard about things like the prediction of the world ending or the Aztec structures but had never actually known about them. But, things are often bitter sweet, and I must reflect on some of these "sadder" moments. Christopher Columbus didn't discover America.... Pocahontas probably didn't save John Smith and she didn't fall in love with him.... Paul Revere didn't really do the whole "The British are coming!" thing. So I learned alot. But, in a way, Mr. Haston proved my childhood a lie which I'm pretty sure ISN'T a high point but... you know.

  6. This is hard because we have studied many people who have done many cool things that I could write about. The chapter about starting to find ways to the West Indies was good. The blog about that was horrible though because it totally destroyed all my thoughts about Christopher Columbus. He did not discover America; he was in the Caribbean. He also did some really bad things that no one talks about like killing people to see if his sword was sharp enough. He also didn't prove the world was round; people years before he was born proved that. He did do some good things, but overall to me he was pretty much a big FAIL.

  7. This semester was a fun semester I learned a lot although I did have some embarrassing moments. Like when I did the video and when I did the game and how I forgot to mark the answers to the questions on the game this semester I was the laughing stock the one that got laughed at. Although I got laughed at I learned a lot about the revolutionary war and all that took place in it and all the people that helped win the war for us the chapter about the revolutionary war was the chapter that really stuck out to me it was really cool to learn about the revolutionary war.

  8. Learning about how America began was pretty cool. It showed me what our country stands for. I never knew we went through so many struggles to become the US. I would have never known that we had a constitution before the one now. In some ways, England founded us. But also, we broke away from them. There were so many wars before we became a country. After we did become one, there were still wars so we could stay a country. It was very interesting. I learned a lot. It was just really cool to see how the country grew and still is growing. (105)

  9. This semester has had a lot of things that have interested me. From people dumping tea to people killing other people, we have covered a lot off information, and have enjoyed it more than I thought I would have. But the thing that stuck out to me the most was the blog about the Salem Witch Trials. I was interested in it before the blog, but because of the blog, I learned more about it and it interested me more. So many innocent people were killed because of it, and they didn't really have any proof that they were actually performing witchcraft. It is so sad to think that these people were convinced that others, even religious friends, were performing witchcraft. This was probably my favorite blog from this semester, but there were others that I enjoyed as well. Merry Christmas everyone! (142)

  10. To be honest.... I hated history a lot until last year and this year! You make history seem more fun and interesting. I liked the chapter on George Washington and his journey about "discovering" America. I though that I knew a lot about George Washington, and I knew some stuff, but I definitely did not know all the bad things that he did. And some of the thins he did were absolutely terrible! But if it he had not had his plan for his journey to America, I can not even imagine what the world would be like. There are so many what if's in history. Like what if this had not even happened.... what would things be like today if so and so had not done this. I have learned a lot this year!!(135)

  11. I really liked the first semester of 8th grade, it was really fun .My favorite part of history this year, wow I have to think but it would be the coming to Americas with the " whitemen " and Indains. I thought it was cool how much I was lied to as a child. I liked the way the Indains acted to the English men it was a very insteresting chapter. I thought it was cool how we watched the movie and saw the differences between Disney and the real thing. I really like Pocahontas' life, she was very inspiring. (100)

  12. History has been more work from sixth grade to eighth grade. Even I've only had your class for about a year and a half now it seems to be easier to understand. I appreciate that. it makes a lot more sense. I thought it was really interesting what the real story of Columbus is. I like to know little things like that. and then now knowing that Paul Revere did not do the midnight ride was surprising. wow. I really enjoy doing the current event game and things of that sort. I like that. My mom told me today that she asked for prayers for exams and you laughed, I thought that was funny. sorry for my crazy mother. anyways, yes, history is fun and I cant believe the whole school year is half way over. goodness, time flies when you're having fun.

  13. This year has been fun but hard at times but i guess that's what school is. I learned many new things but only one stood out above them all: the real truth about Christopher Columbus. I used to revere him as a man but now he is no better than any other person who owned slaves. His actions disgusted me but opened my eyes that not all people are who they say they are. Although that was kind of a low part for me, a high one occurred when we talked about the constitution and the branches of government. I found both topics interesting and learned a lot in the process. This has been a great year (except for Tennessee's season and Ohio State losing to Michigan State and Derrick Rose tearing his meniscus) and it can only get better. (123 words)

  14. My favorite section from this semester would probably have to be chapter one. I really liked learning about the Europeans and the Central American people. I have never really liked America that much and still do not. So this isn’t my favorite year of history. One of my favorite parts of chapter one would be the names of the Europeans. They are so different from American names and what we are used to and most of them sound really cool. It kind of crushed my childhood to find out how Christopher Columbus really acted when he found the “New World” though. (101)

  15. This fall we have learned about how different areas were development in the Americas and how men and their culture influenced the begging of our country. I liked when we learned about the Boston Tea Party. It was funny to me how the Bostonians laughed at the red-coats. I liked it when the colonists got even with the British by playing “a prank” on them. That became the Boston Tea Party. When our men dressed up like Mohawk Indians, boarded the ships filled with tea from the East India Company, and thru all the chests of tea overboard, I thought it was a neat idea.
