Machu Picchu: Amazing Incan Construction Feat

As you can see from last week's Aztec blog, the ancient civilizations of North + South America were far from "uncivilized".  This week we will focus on the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu.  This incredible feat of construction is still a worldwide tourist attraction today. Located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Machu Picchu was a religious and cultural center for the Inca Empire.  By carefully reading this site and this site, provide in your comment this week a description of Machu Picchu. Be sure to include what you think is the most impressive about this place.

  1. Machu Picchu is what is left of the Inca Empire in Peru. The ruins are located on the Andean Mountain Range above the Urubamba Valley. When the Inca built the city, they made it to last because it still stands today. The architecture of the city has to be the most impressive feature about Machu Picchu, and especially how they used the natural surroundings to serve the functions of each of the three sections: agricultural, urban, and religious. It’s even more incredible that they were able to build such a beautiful place without the tools we have today. Although it looks like many people could have lived there, experts say that less than a thousand people lived in the Mountain. Still, we can enjoy what remains.

  2. Machu Picchu is an astounding place. It includes lush fields, amazing stone buildings, and so much history. Machu Picchu is located on the Andean Mountain Range in Peru, South America. Archeologists say that it could have been home to one-thousand two-hundred people. Machu Picchu is raised seven- thousand feet above sea level. Machu Picchu is split into three different areas. The first is the agricultural part. The second is the urban area. Lastly there is the religious part of Machu Picchu. It is home to alpaca, which some people get mixed up with the llama. And it is also home to four-hundred twenty species of birds. And the interesting fact about some of those birds is that some of them can't be seen anywhere else in the world. Those are the interesting facts about Machu Picchu. (138)

  3. Machu Picchu is an interesting place. Every were you look there is history they have: amazing stone buildings, great Landscaping engineering. Their city was engineered so well if you just look at the mountain you wouldn’t know a city was there, it blends in with its surroundings. They were great farmers, they had an irrigation system that would not only water their plants but it would prevent erosion. They had some really cool things for the 16th century they were way ahead of their time period. Many people say that Machu Picchu is an isolated place and people don’t want to visit it today but it is one of the most popular tourist’s attractions in Peru. (116)

  4. Machu Picchu is a very mysterious place in Peru. It is located on a hill in the Andean Mountain Range and the Urubamba River. Machu Picchu is seven thousand feet above sea level, and was built by the Incan civilization. There was estimated to have had around one thousand two hundred people in its population. Machu Picchu is separated into three areas: agricultural, urban, and religious, this is so it can function more efficiently. What's absolutely incredible is that the Incas built this city with no steel, iron, or wheels. Machu Picchu is still around and beautiful as ever even five hundred years later.

  5. The Machu Picchu was a very impressive accomplishment. This shows us again that the early Americans were not uncivil but were actually very capable. We know by looking at it and by knowing when it was built that they wanted it to stay for a long time. I think the most amazing thing about it is the sturdiness. I think that it is cool that it could stand for so long. I think that the structure they built was actually sturdier than most modern day buildings. There is always a building that is declared unsafe and you cant go in. But if you go to Peru, they still give tours of this building. That is why I think that this building is really cool.

  6. The Machu Picchu is one of the seven wonders of the world. It is 7,000 feet above sea level and is located in the Andean Mountain Range. This ancient city was built in a very functional way because they used the land to decide where things would go. The lower sections were used for the schools and farming, the middle section was built to have many buildings built into the slopes of the mountain and the top section was for the religious area. This was on the crest of the mountain. The building of this city was remarkable when you think about the location and how all this was done by ancient hand tools. Many people have visited these ruins say the same thing. It is a magical place.

  8. The Machu Picchu is a bountiful place in the Andean Mountains, 7000 feet above sea level, with hundreds of terraces that were cut by the Inca some 500 years ago. This place could have been home to about one thousand two hundred Incas, but it was also thought to just be a retreat for Inca Elites, or rulers. The place is divided up into three sections, religion, agriculture, and urban. What I think is most impressive is all the ways that things are built there, especially the terraces for the agriculture. The architecture they used to build is also very impressive. (101)

  9. At 7,000 feet above sea level and settled on a small hilltop between the Andean Mountain, The Macchu Picchu soars above the Urabamba Valley below. Around 1200 people could have lived in this area, archeologists say. It is separated into three areas: agricultural, urban, and religious. There are structures made so that it matches its surroundings. For example: the important religious groups are settled at the crest of the hill, overlooking thousands of feet below and the agricultural groups take advantage of the natural slopes. Hikers and tourists say while climbing the mountain, they feel mixed emotions. Some say it’s even magical! Looking at the temples, fields, terraces, and baths may be saved for another time though. People say that this green paradise is a must see for anyone who visits Peru! (132)

  10. Machu Picchu rises at about 7,000 feet above sea level. It also is in the Andean Mountain range, which is in Peru. Some archaeologists say that Machu Picchu could house 1,200 people, but it is so illogical because it would take a long time just to get to the nearest village. Some historians say that it was a retreat for the Incan rulers. Machu Picchu is separated into three areas: agricultural, religious, and urban. In my opinion, the most beautiful place in Machu Picchu is Funerary Rock Hut. It offers a view of the entire place of Machu Picchu. From the Funerary Rock Hut, you can go down to the room where the Incan kings were mummified. Llamas also come out every evening to keep the grass efficiently mowed. If went to Machu Picchu, I would definetly take the tiresome walk up to the Funerary Rock Hut first. (149)

  11. At 7,000 feet above the sea level and located on a small hill between the Andean Mountain Range in Peru are the ruins of Machu Picchu. Archeologists estimate that approximately 1,200 people could have lived in this area. They have their own place to bury bodies called Funerary Rock. They have something for ceremonies called the Royal Tomb. More than 100 bodies have been found there, most of them women. Many of the elements of the Inca religion were destroyed by European explorers. Thankfully, this site remains for us to learn of the past. The Inca use their achievement and skills to build Machu Picchu in light of the knowledge they lacked.

  12. The Machu Pechu city is amazingly built on a small hill top souring seven thousand feet above sea-level. Just discovered a little over one hundred years ago; the city of Machu Pechu had an approximant population of one thousand two hundred that could have lived there. People think that it was practically a retreat for Incan rulers. It was far from any villages so it would be hard to live there permanently. So a grocery trip would take multiple days to get to the nearest village. Therefore it was basically a vacation spot. It’s amazing that this city had three different areas. There was the agricultural part, the urban part, and the religious part. The farmers would live at the bottom using the slopes and open land for their crops. The urban people would live in the middle. And the religious people were at the top looking over the entire city and the valley. Witnesses of the city now say that they are amazed on the construction of the homes and stores on the hillside blending in to it. The most amazing thing about the city of Machu Pechu is that the city is so distant from other society but it is so organized around religion just as all of the other cities.
