  1. Napoleon was the man that had control of the Louisiana territory. Eventually he saw that he no longer had need for the land. After that he put the land up for sale and go president Thomas Jefferson got excited to buy it. But the only problem with Maddison buying it is that he contradicted himself way to much during the purchase. For one he said that he did not believe in a national bank; but guess how he bought the land, with the national bank. For this he was chastised by many. But this purchase doubled that mass of the country. May people think that when they hear the Louisiana territory they think of the today state and maybe just a little more than it. But no this when form Louisiana all the way up to today’s border of Canada.

  2. The Louisiana Purchase was the first step into expansion of the West. Jefferson’s plan was to expand the West and have access to international markets for American farm products, but France threatened to block American access to the port of New Orleans on the Mississippi River. President Jefferson considered changing his traditional foreign policy to an anti-French alliance with the British because of this. He sent diplomats to France to bargain for continued trade access along the Mississippi. He also sent diplomats to Britain to pursue other policy options. James Monroe, the top person negotiating in Paris, offered to purchase New Orleans and West Florida for between two and ten million dollars. Instead, Napoleon offered a lot more than that. He was needing money to continue his war against Britain. He knew that he could not force Americans out of the land France possessed in North America. This is why Napoleon offered so much land. Napoleon offered all of Louisiana to the U.S. for 15 million dollars. This was only four cents per acre. This doubled the size of the United States. Although the Louisiana Purchase helped America expand, it also caused many issues. For example, some Federalists, began to talk of seceding from the U.S. because their political power was dramatically reduced by the purchase. Jefferson had clearly not followed his own strict interpretation of the Constitution. Federalists disagreed with the purchase because the Constitution nowhere permitted the federal government to purchase new land. The purchase also contradicted Jefferson's commitment to reduce the national debt as swiftly as possible. Although 15 million dollars was a small sum for a large amount of land, it was still a huge debt for the modest federal budget of the day.(288 words)

  3. The Louisiana Purchase influenced America in a lot of ways. It gave us more land westward which was what we wanted to do (expand) so by giving us more land it doubled America's size. Thomas Jefferson was our president at the time, and his plans for America depended on expanding westward. This vision was hurt when France regained control of Louisiana and their leader, Napoleon, threatened to block America's access on the Mississippi River and to New Orleans. This threat led to the thought of becoming an Anti-France, Pro-British country. James Monroe decided to make a deal. He (representing America) would buy New Orleans and Florida for $2-10 million dollars. Napoleon then came back and offered all of Louisiana for $15 million. When this came back to Jefferson he had to decide how to interpret the Constitution. In the end the treaty-making provisions let him have some room to do things. In the end, America bought the Louisiana territory for 4 cents an acre. That's 25 acres for $1. This purchase really captured Jefferson's plans for America. Jefferson also changed his perspective of a national bank and reducing the national debt. He had been against a national bank, but then came to it to get money for the purchase. This also put us in more debt which was against his want to reduce the country's debt as soon as he could.(231)

  4. Thomas Jefferson's plans for the nation depended upon western expansion and access to international markets for American farm products. This idea was threatened when France regain the Louisiana territory. Napoleon threatened to block American access to the important port of New Orleans on the Mississippi River. New American settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains depended upon river transport to get their goods to market since overland trade to the east was really expensive! Blocking American access to New Orleans was such a huge threat to American interests that President Jefferson was thinking about changing his traditional foreign policy to an anti-French alliance with the British. James Monroe, who was the top person negotiating in Paris, was empowered to purchase New Orleans and West Florida for around two and ten million dollars. However, Napoleon offered even MORE money! He offered ALL of the Louisiana territory to the United States for $15 million! ( it would be about 4 cents an acre ) During American development in the 19th century depended on western expansion, it also raised controversial issues that might lead to the disunion of the United States! Most of the Senate agreed to buy the Louisiana territory and the Louisiana Purchase easily passed 26 to 6. This big expansion also contradicted Jefferson's commitment to reduce the national debt as swiftly as possible. Although 15 million dollars was a relatively small sum for such a large amount of land, it was still a HUGE price tag for the federal budget of the day. The Louisiana Purchase was definitely a good idea to do! (262)

  5. There are many reasons why we were able to receive such a large amount of land. Napoleon had to sell it because he knew that he couldn’t keep Americans of the land. He wouldn’t have had enough soldiers to send to America because they were fighting Britain. It would be the War of 1812, but with France. Also, France needed money to continue the war with Britain. Also, France lost the island of Santo Domingo, so they didn’t have any use for the land. Technically, Jefferson wasn’t authorized to make such a deal because it wasn’t in the Constitution. But, everybody figured it was a good thing, so they liked it.(111)

  6. The Louisiana Purchase happened because napoleon had the land and he was in a war and he no longer had need for the land, so he put it up for sale and our president thomas jefferson was happy to buy it. One of the main reasons we wanted the land was the french threatened to block our use of the mississippi river and if we had louisiana we would have a direct path to the mississippi river, so we sent two men to check out the land and the two men were Lewis and Cark their main mission was to find a waterway from east to west. in my opinion i think this was a great idea to do because we could expand our trade in the US and across the world.(132)

  7. there were many reasons why the US recieved so much land with the Lousiana purchase. they doubled in size because the land area was so big. Thomas Jerfersan paid 15 million for it and it was about 3 cents an acre. Napolean bought it planning to use it to take over america, but failed when he lost control of what is known today as Cuba. This allowed the US to gain lots of land and space for people to live in, even thought some had already moved, they now technically owned the land. Lewis and Clark played a huge roll in the expansion. they explored and mapped a ton of the land and rivers, this allowed the amercans who were moving to move safer because they had somewhat maps to do it with. this deal ALSO gave us control of New Orleans and the Mississippi river, which made US trade amazing and allowed us to spread trade through out the world. 8. Napoleon had control over the Louisiana territory at the time, and he was also in control of Santo Domingo which is now modern day Haiti. While in control of Santo Domingo the people revolted and pushed the French out. This is how it became Haiti again. But with out Santo Domingo Napoleon had little need for the Louisiana territory. If you have little need for something you are probably not going to ask for a whole lot of money so they didn't they really just wanted to get rid of it. So they gave it to us for just $15 million. The ironic thing about this deal was that back in the day Thomas Jefferson opposed a national bank. But when the deal was made he actually paid for it with the national banks money. This is how Thomas Jefferson was involved and how we were able to get such a chunk of land. (155)

  9. France has control over Louisiana. We wanted to buy New Orleans from the French. We offered 2 million dollars for New Orleans. Napoleon had to sell it because he knew that he couldn’t keep Americans out of the land. He wouldn’t have had enough soldiers to send to America because they were fighting Britain. So they sold us the whole entire Louisiana Territory for 15 million dollars. The Louisiana Territory doubled our nation’s size which eventually will lead to the entire United States coming together. Once we bought all the territories fell into like dominoes. So it all started by Thomas Jefferson buying the Louisiana Purchase.(106)

  10. Military Commander Napoleon Bonaparte was in control of the Louisiana Territory and wanted to make it into a sugar empire. Napoleons realized he had no time for the empire he planned to build. He decided to sell the Louisiana Territory to America. Thomas Jefferson offered $15,000,000 for the land and Napoleon sold it to him. America now owned the Louisiana Territory, and while America was baffled by what they would do with it...Jefferson had plans! before the Louisiana Purchase happened Jefferson asked congress for $25,000,000 to explore that territory! When it was bought he recruited Meriwether Lewis and he recruited William Clark. With a team of other experts they set out on a journey of a life time! The main goal was to find a water rout across America, but found new wildlife along the way. Even though there was no water rout across America the Journey was not a waste of time! (155)

  11. America was dependent upon westward expansion so they tried to buy the Louisiana territory from French leader Napoleon. Napoleon also owned the Santo Domingo land at this time. He soon lost control of Santo Domingo, and there was no reason for him to keep the Louisiana territory. He sold it to us for four cents an acre. That was a real bargain for the Americans, and so that was a big gain. But like most things that have previously happened in history class, there is also an opposing side to this event. But this opposing side had a real good reason for its opposition. It was all based on the role that Thomas Jefferson played in this purchase. Jefferson had previously said no to use a national bank, but that is exactly what he did to makes this purchase. Some New England federalists even talked about seceding from America a over this topic at one point. But we did gain the New Orleans port back. The purchase wasn't bad in this event, it was how it was purchased that was wrong. (180)

  12. The United States wanted the Louisiana Territory because of the farming and the need to have access to the Mississippi river. They needed the river to transport their crops: however, the French were blocking the Americans from doing that. Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe to negotiate the purchase of the territory. Napoleon offered the land to the United States for 15,000,000 dollars because he needed money to pay for his war against Britain. This equaled four cents an acre. This land stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. Many said that Jefferson violated the constitution because he did not have authority to purchase new land. Some state even threatened to secede from the union because it made their state weaker because they would lose votes. Thomas Jefferson felt very strongly about expanding the United States to fulfill his vision for America. (143)

  13. President Thomas Jefferson wanted to expand the international market of America in the west part of our country at the time. However, the French man Napoleon had regained the control of the Louisiana region. He threatened to take away our access to New Orleans. For any traders west of the Appalachian Mountains, this was terrible news. They need that part of the river to transport their goods. And how was Jefferson supposed to expand the trade without part of the resources?

Solution: Jefferson delegated James Monroe to negotiate with Napoleon while other delegates were talking with Britain on an anti-French alliance with them. Monroe was assigned to offer 10 million dollars for New Orleans and West Florida. But Napoleon needed more money to fight against Britain, so he raised the deal to 15 million. BEST PART: We got ALL of the Louisiana region! The math ends up leading it that every acre was only 4 cense. Too bad money has loss value and we can’t pay that little for acres now xD

It was basically a steal, and this doubled America’s size! But not everyone was happy with the LA Purchase. This lowered the political power of the Federalists. So they started making their plans to secede from the union, but we all know how that turned out. Arron Burr, the leader they chose to potentially lead them, was accused of threating to commit treason.

The LA purchase ended up helping the national debt decrease even quicker. All in all, this deal was a TOTAL BARGAIN.
