Domestic Crisis: Washington + The Whiskey Rebellion

We left off with the creation of a new government, under the Constitution, and the election of our first president, George Washington. He was a war hero to the public and seen as a great leader, but he was not a politician. Our new country would face many new challenges in the first decade of existence, many of which we had no idea how to handle because it was all so new. One of the major domestic (which means happening in your own country) issues Washington faced was the Whiskey Rebellion.

The Whiskey Rebellion caused many controversies not yet seen for the young United States Watch this video for an excellent, and brief, overview of the conflict. Follow this link to go into detail about the Whiskey Rebellion. Use this link to read Washington's proclamation regarding the Whiskey Rebellion.

Answer these two questions for the comments this week.
1) How was the Whiskey Rebellion similar to the years leading up to the American Revolution?
2) Would the rebellion have had a different outcome if a weaker president had been in charge? (I don't mean weak physically like...Mr. Haston is so weak...He has no muscles. I mean weak like...a president who was not respected by the people or who had no interest in using his federal power.)

  1. 1- whiskey rebellion was similar to the years leading up to the American revolution in these ways. One the leaders kept adding taxation without representation and they kept adding it to stuff that really matter to them. And would affect them greatly like whiskey Which made them mad and ended up rebelling or starting a war.
2- I think the rebel you would've had to completely different outcome because without George Washington and his strong and like consistent see I think the other presents would've just given up or would've just killed all of them where George Washington took charge and hung the leaders which in fact made The followers listen to George Washington. He listen to the people but also listened to what was right and what was the law. He was looking out for our country not just a group of individuals 144words

  2. 1. The Whisky Rebellion was similar to the years leading up to the American Revolution in a few ways. First of all, they used the same argument which was "no taxation without representation." They also started rioting, which was another thing they did before the American Revolution.

    2. I believe that the rebellion would have had a very different outcome if we had had a weaker president. George Washington was a strong president and he did what was necessary to stop the rebellion. Since America was a new country, a rebellion like this might have been very damaging to the country.

  3. The Whiskey Rebellion was similar to the begging / leading up to the Revolution because they started to tax things that people used. They didn't have anything to really back it up or anything. The taxes were on stuff that was bought a lot and common so that the more people bought of it the tax was big. They put taxes on things because they had a lot of debt and most states didn't like it.
    2. The Whiskey Rebellion probably would have been different outcome if the president wasn't strong. George Washington was the president. He lead a march of a lot of men to stop the people in that we're rebelling. Washington showed them that he was strong and powerful.

  4. 1)the whiskey rebellion was similar to the years leading up the American Revolution as in the people were still mad about no taxation without representation. This was always a big problem
2)I believe that the whiskey rebellion would have been a lot different if we had a different president. George Washington was a very good leader and was firm with his decisions. Also if there was something wrong he took care of it himself he did not just tell someone else to go take care of it. A weaker president probably would not really know what to do.

  5. 1.) There were lots of ways and things that made this look like the causes of the revolution. The big issue with both of these things were taxes. They would keep rising the taxes on different products. For example, Whiskey, because Alcohol was the main drink they would use at this time, and the people had no say in it.
2.) I personally think rebellions on a commonly used product would happen no matter what because that's what happened before the United States. However, if somebody else had been in charge it could've been way different because Washington was so well respected and was such a strong leader that he could decide what was best. (115)

  6. WHISKEY REBELLION WAS SIMILAR TO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION BECAUSE OF THE TAXES AND PEOPLE BEING MAD ABOUT THE TAXES THAT WERE NOT NEEDED ON WHISKEY. YES IT WOULD BECAUSE IF WE DIDN’T HAVE A STRONG PRESIDENT DURING THAT TIME THE WHISKEY REBELLION WOULD HAVE NEVER ENDED AND WITHOUT A STRONG PRESIDENT LIKE WASHINGTON THEY WOULDN’T KNOW HOW TO STOP THE REBELLION OF WHISKEY TAXES AND THEY WOULDN’T BE SMART ENOUGH TO BE A PRESIDENT BECAUSE THEY WERE WEAK AND VERY STUPID PLUS LIKE I SAID THE WHISKEY REBELLION WOULD GO ON FOREVER AND WE WOULDN’T BE HERE IN THIS WORLD TODAY 101 WORDS

  7. 1. The whiskey rebellion wasn't exactly like the years leading up to the revolution but it was kind if similar in its own way. The rebellion is like the years leading up to the revolutionary war because then they had passed acts that the people didn't like ether. Then because of this they started to rebellion against authority or the people in power/charge so then the revolutionary war ended up happening. The reason it is different though is because when the whiskey rebellion happened there was just one act and it did not lead up to a revolutionary war as well as they ended up canceling the act.

    2. If there was another president in power at that time that was weaker than George Washington the outcome for the whiskey rebellion most likely would have been different. We might have even gone into another war and no one wants that.

  8. This was similar to the years to the revolutionary war because they used the taxation without representation phrase which started a rout within the countries.
I think that George Washington was such a strong president so I feel like there would be a different outcome if there was a weaker president. I feel like is George Washington wasn't the president there wouldn't have had such a greater outcome. I think George Washington did make some good decisions and choices. I think that if we did not have such a long leader we would not have a that strong of a country but with his strong leader we were doing alright.

  9. This was similar to the years leading up to the revolution because when the other countries sent taxes over to the colonies they would say this is taxation without representation and they wouldn't pay it. The colonies would also protest and sometimes it would get violent just like the Whiskey Rebellion. The colonies saw this as an unfair policy just like the people in the west.

I feel like Washington was such a loved and well respected president so this made him stronger. Which made the outcome of the Whiskey Rebellion great. If we had a president that wasn't loved and well respected then yeah he would have been very weak. The outcome of the Rebellion would have been horrible. The United States wouldn't be the way they are if Washington was our first president. There wouldn't be a White House because no one would have thought of it. To get back on track the outcome of the rebellion would have been outrageous. The president wouldn't have thought of organizing an military of men and marching them up there to stop it. He probably would have stayed where he was and try to think of a way to negotiate with them. So I think that having George Washington as our first president made our country stronger because of his leadership and his strong knowledge of knowing what to do with situations like that. A weak president would have never thought of that in a million years he would be making a deal not putting a stop to it. That's what George Washington did he put a stop to the problem, and not just give the rebels what they wanted. Word count 279

  10. 1)It was similar in many ways. One being the fact that the Americans thought it was taxation without representation all over again. I also think they were being whiny. I mean it just because it is a new freedom government does not mean you will not have to pay back taxes. Especially after you just fought and war and your whole country is in debt. They did the same thing to England. Even though England sent a bunch of troops over to America to help its citizens win the French and Indian war they still got mad they had to pay taxes. England was in a lot of debt so it is fitting that the colonies pay it back but no we were to stubborn, and like then during the whiskey rebellion we were just to stubborn. So if you think about it most rebellion caused come from either the people being stubborn or the government.
    2) Yes, I do believe if we had a president weaker than George Washington than our government would have failed. There probably would not have even been a USA today if it were not for good ol’ Washington. Than again it does depend on who would have been in office. I mean if it was someone like Donald J. Trump we would still probably have the US since he says what is on his mind and does not take anything from anybody, but if it were someone like Obama. Oh yeah, we would be sunk.

  11. The whiskey rebellion was similar to the years leading up to the revolution in one way in my opinion. During the build up to the revolution, Americans were mad because they felt that the taxes placed on them by the British was "taxation without representation" because they had no say in the taxes placed on them. The reason the whiskey rebellion occurred is extremely similar. The reason the Pennsylvanian farmers were upset about this was because they had no say in the taxes placed on whiskey.

I feel that if we did not have a strong leader like Washington during the whiskey rebellion, it would have led to a revolutionary war part two within the country. Without a strong leader to put down the rebellion, it would most likely grow in support and the people could rise up and overthrow the president, making another new country on the North American continent. This is a main reason why Washington was such a good leader. He didn't just sit back and watch things happen, he was the one that made things happen.

  12. One of the ways the whiskey rebellion was similar to the American Revolution was because they're was unnecessary taxing. Another way they were similar was people were unhappy and they rioted.
If Washington wasn't president and instead we had a weak president the out comes would probably be very, very different. It could've been a big blow to the government and the people would've ended up taking over and it might have even started Revolutionary War 2. And the future of the United States being one nation might have been in jeopardy. We might even have been separate country's today.

  13. 1. The Whiskey rebellion was similar to the years leading up to the American revolution. They are similar because in the years leading up to the American Revolution there were several complications.

    2. I believe that the whiskey rebellion would have definetly been different if Washington wasn't the president. I believe that a strongly supported president is very important. This is because the president would be strongly supported by people, so they would listen to him. He would most likely have the majority of the influence and prosper. I believe if we had not of had as strong as a president the whiskey rebellion would not have been successful at all.

  14. I'mAt his weeks blog is about the whiskey rebellion.

    1. I think that the whiskey rebellion was similar to the years leading up to the American Revolution in multiple ways. One way is that they were both viewed as taxation without representation, which was basically an unfair way of taxing. Although I think that the people acted like babies about this, I think it was unfair.

    2. I think that the whiskey rebellion would have a completely different outcome if George Washington wasn't the president at that time. This is because everyone seemed to like him a lot and he was a very strong political man. In fact, he was voted in to office with 100% votes; so if he was replaced with some random politically weak president, the whiskey rebellions outcome would have been completely different.

  15. 1.) yes, I do think this was very similar. The revolutionary war was coming up to this so yes I believe it was in ways. Other colonies would do things such as send taxation without representation a lot would not pay it. Also when reading it said people would tend to protest and get very angry. A lot would see their ways as unfair and would not usually end up right.

2.) I fully believe if we had a different president than Washington it would have been totally different. Our government everything Washington was a great president and everyone loved him mainly I mean he was well respected and so much more.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well, there was taxing involved, which didn't make people happy, there was a group of people who were unhappy. Once there's a group of people who are unhappy they will spread their unhappiness to others, or their frustration and irritation. Which will cause them to rebel, get upset, angry, and violent. Plus, George Washington was involved with both, actually. With the Whiskey rebellion it affected George Washington the most and not the colonists or citizens, except the farmers. Because the main thing he drank was whiskey, since they didn't have they didn't purify their water. Plus, George Washington was probably one of the most respected president out the presidents.

The outcome would be different, since he was respected by everyone in America and probably other places. It probably wouldn't be as violent and rage full. For example, if Bill Clinton was the president people wouldn't care as much. I don't really know if people had as much respect for him. Bill Clinton is not even close to being on the same level as George Washington. Plus, as I said before whiskey was a big part of Washington's life. That's basically one of the only things he drank. So, the outcome would probably be very different.

  17. 1) How was the Whiskey Rebellion similar to the years leading up to the American Revolution?
It was similar because they said no taxation with out representation and started to rebel against America and George Washington gathered a group of volunteers to take out the rebellion and they quickly disbanded.
    2) Would the rebellion have had a different outcome if a weaker president had been in charge?
If a weaker president was in power we would not have had a strong government to help with the early on descions that where made and thus we would have no good government which would also be a president until they died. (Word count 109)

  18. 1. It was similar because the other laws they put on other things before the rebellion were mostly hated just like this one. But in this case the president most likely supported the rebellion against this law. George Washington, the president at this time, was a huge whiskey maker, drinker, and lover. So, I would assume that he would totally support this rebellion.
    2. There definitely would have been a different outcome if there was a weaker president. I feel like the whiskey rebellion was for the people. George Washington was one of the most liked by people. He himself loved whiskey so this rebellion would help him in a way. If there was a resident who didn't care about his people them the rebellion probably would've gone worse. Word count: 127

  19. 1)It was similar because the rebellion was over government imposed taxes that the people didn't agree with. This brought back the saying "No taxation without representation".

2)Having a weaker ruling body would've caused a different outcome. After the protests became violent,a weaker president would've given the protesters what they wanted.Washington responded by organizing a militia force. This put an end to the rebellion instead of letting the people get what they want so easily. If they had a weaker leader at the time, instead of a strong government, there would only be people ruling themselves, which wouldn't result in the strong nation we have today.(105 words)

  20. 1. In both cases, people rebelled because they wanted change. They rebelled for quite some times until the government finally took action. In the case of the Whiskey Rebellion, a militia was sent to put down the rebellion. However, in the case of the American Revolution, Britain finally started to fight back.
    2. Undoubtedly the outcome would have been far different if there was a weaker president in office. Most likely, they would have tried to negotiate at first. Then they would only use force if they absolutely had to. Washington thought that a militia would calm the riots, and it in fact intimidated the people to where they didn’t even fight back.

  21. 1. I think the whiskey rebellion was a big cause in many things that later happened. I sort of think that it had some what of an affect with the Stamp Act. The only difference is, the Whisky Rebellion was just putting tax on Whisky. I also think, it caused a lot more arguments. The colonists knew, there would be changes. This was one of the first, and when they rebelled, they realized they had a voice too. I think the Whisky Rebellion had a huge Impact with the American Revolution. Smaller rebellions, just lead to bigger rebellions.

    2. The Rebellion definitely would have had a different outcome if George Washington wasn't the President. Washington was a very strong leader. I think he knew what he was doing, and knew how to make the right decisions. A weaker president would have made poor decisions, that would not have been the best for our Country. (Even though you said not physically) I do think a weaker president would have made a difference. George Washington was able to fight in the wars, which gave him a different perspective. I think it was easier for him too see and notice what the colonist were going through, since being President is very different. I honestly think, if we had had a physically weaker President, he wouldn't have been able to see the different aspects, and realize what was happening. So I think both, physically and mentally, would have made a huge impact on how the Country would be now, if Washington hadn't been the first president.

  22. 1.) The Whiskey rebellion and the American Revolution are similar because both times the people refused to pay or rebelled against it. The both cause a stir up in the population.
2.) I think that if there was a weaker president there would be a completely different outcome. George Washington was know for his respect and that is one of the reasons that the Whiskey Rebellion had the outcome it did. If there was a weaker president there would be no hope for the rebellion.

  23. 1) The Whiskey Rebellion is actually very similar to the Revolutionary War. In the years leading up to both the Whiskey Rebellion and the Revolutionary War involved a lot of debt from a recent war, the government deciding to heavily tax something people used everyday, and the people getting angry enough to protest and riot.
    2) There would most certainly have been a different outcome of the Whiskey Rebellion without George Washington as America's first president. George Washington was a commander during the Revolutionary War, so he would have been used to being in charge and taking control. He took control of the problem and took care of it without it becoming a huge problem.

  24. The Whiskey Rebellion was like the years leading up to the Revolutionary War in these two matters; the people were getting taxed on a major item that everyone practically lived on. The people were getting their molasses, sugar, and paper taxed. Those are things that many people would use. Also the key phrase "taxation without representation" pops up again.

If this rebellion was handled by a weaker president, the outcome would have been very different. Without Washington's control and earlier position as a general, it probably would have been disastrous. The protest would have become very violent. Whiskey and alcohol aren't just for drinking, they were also used for medicine. 110

  25. WHISKEY REBELLION:

The Whiskey Rebellion, which was a rebellion toward the government by wheat farmers in western Pennsylvania, is reminiscent of the beginnings of the American Revolution in a few ways. THe major one, which is the one that I think is most important, is the cause of the rebellion. The farmers, in order to produce some side money out of leftover grain, made barrels of whiskey to sell in town. In addition to the fact that some people just like alcohol, the water in this time period wasn't very clean. Thus, alcohol, and particularly whiskey, were very popular and generally accepted as money due to the lack of a national currency. Because of this, when the nation consolidated some massive debt from the recent war, this would be the most effective thing to tax to make some extra money. So the farmers rioted about taxation without representation and the like.

If the U.S had a different, weaker president, the country would have tanked, and we probably wouldn't be called Americans today due to national bankruptcy.... There you go Mr. H! (182)

  26. 1. the whiskey rebellion was similar to the years leading up to the american revolution because whiskey was basically money back then. taxes weere already making people made, and then george washington decides t have a whiskey rebellion, which not alot of people liked. whiskey was veey important to some people mainly because of the profits they gained from it.

    2. in my opinion, i think that the whiskey rebellion would not have been AS successful if it had been a weaker person who inforced it. because george washington was so well respected, i think it went better than if someone not as respected, like john adams, was president.

  27. 1. The Whiskey Rebellion was similar to the years because of the popular phrase, " taxation without representation. Also because of all the taxes and because no one had wanted to pay the taxes because they were expressive.
    2. I do think that the outcome would have been very different. George Washington was a very strong and brave man. He did all he could to stop the Whiskey Rebellion and I do not think any other president could do that sort of thing. If George Washington did not stop the Whiskey Rebellion m then I think America would be a very different place.
