Road To The Civil War: Slavery or States' Rights?

This week, you need to research the topic of slavery vs. states' rights. There are two very entrenched camps regarding this issue. Some historians claim the Civil War was caused by slavery and others claim it was all about states' rights.

Write two sentences explaining each side. Then, describe which side you fall on and why.

  1. States Rights' was a commonly debated topic in the 19th century. The Missouri Compromise was an act that settled which states would enter free and which states would enter as slave states. However, many interpreted the Constitution to where it permitted slavery. This caused many conflicts as the States themselves couldn't really completely prohibit slavery.

I think that States should've had the rights to choose. There are several ways the constitution can be interpreted, but if no one agrees to follow something, then who is going to stop you? It definitely would've helped the prohibition of slavery if States could decide on their own.

  2. slavery is an awful thing that we used to have in America. It's basically where you hold some one hostage of the same race of different race or just because you want slaves. States rights are where the state has the right to chose what they want. America was not good at giving states their right to choose.

I would go with the states rights because I don't believe in having slaves. Having people work for you because you are too lazy to do you own work is wrong. No matter what race or whatever characteristic you think makes you better then them should be allowed to separate us apart.

  3. States' rights was a big thing back in those days and times. In my opinion I feel like this was just kind of selfish for the people to do and makes me think they were only caring and looking out for themselves. Some states would actually care and do the right thing and other would just do what was best for them and not others. Slavery was a big deal and no one took it serious and thought that it was how it has always been so let it be the way it is, which was very rude and cruel. They were people just like us and deserved to live like us.

I think that in reality they should have all sat down and talked about everything before going and choosing for states they live there let them pick. But I also feel if you did that a lot would have just kept the slaves and not even thought about it so its 50/50 for me. (168)

Therefore is a lot of debates about if the Civil War was caused by the states rights or if it was caused by slavery.
    States Rights-
I think the Civil War might have been caused by states rights which would make since because they were having a lot of debates whether states should get the right to choose if they wanted to be free or slave. I think that the states should have been able to choose which one they wanted and not already have to be a slave or free one.
    Slave-
I also think that the Civil War was caused by Slavery because slaves were the main reason we were fighting for slavery or no slavery. I think this also because slaves were making a lot of the stuff America was getting money for like the cotton trades and without slaves they would have to do it by themselves.

  6. State's rights was an idea that started when our country was founded, and it pretty much meant that the states had rights to not follow or sign laws. This was highly talked about in the south, due to the fact that the north wanted them to end slavery, but the south felt they had the right to them.
On the other side, slavery was the south enslaving the black population to do their work out in the fields of the south for them. Obviously, This was a terrible thing to do to the blacks, but the south felt they were justified to have them.
Now where do I fall in this debate? Slavery. I think slavery started the civil war for many reasons. Sure, the south wanted state's rights, but it was for the rights to have slaves. Without slavery, the south had nothing, so they tried everything to keep it. Sure there may have been other state's rights they wanted, but it was really the rights to slaves, therefore I say slavery started the civil war

  7. Slavery was white people taking advantage of African Americans. They would make them do hard work and anything they needed.

States rights is what a state has to choose and pick or choose what they want to do. This was a big issue back then.

I think the civil war was caused because of slavery. First of all because if we didn't have slavery we would not be fighting over which states are free and which states are not. I also do not understand why the north and south could not come to an agreement about this. I mean it could have been very simple. It would calm down about the whole slave or free state and then a big state would apply for statehood and things got crazy again.

  8. States' rights where not as important in the civil war but they still where their in the since that the state's left to make their own allowance of slavery. So yes slavery was one of the main things that the Civil War was about however it was not as pressed by Lincoln until later on in the Civil War.

I would say that it falls right in the middle because they both where apart of the Civil War, but slavery was not as pressed in to the Civil War as an excuse until later on in the North at least it was first had slavery and states' rights because they wanted the right to have slaves so they seceded from the Union in order to make what they wanted a reality.

  9. States Rights is a term used to describe the struggle of political power in the United States. State rights focused strongly on the institution of slavery. It also focused on if the federal government had the right to abolish slavery in every single state or not.
Slavery was probably the main cause of the civil war. Slaves are people who are owned by others to do work or obey them. A lot of slaves suffered high mortality and when children were born at around three or four months old, they were used as slaves. Most children died within their first year of their life.

  10. This weeks blog is about the true cause of the Civil War. Was it Slavery? Or was it States Rights?

Both Slavery and States Rights were huge issues leading to the civil war, but in my opinion, slavery was the main reason the Civil War happened. Yes, states rights was a big factor to, but slavery was definately the main reason we had a civil war. I believe that it was about a 65% slavery and a 35% states rights. Even if slavery had never existed, America probably would have had a Civil War eventually. Same goes for states rights. Our country was split in half by two huge problems that needed to be fixed.

  11. States' rights are the idea that states can have a government that does what it wants. They can pick and choose which laws they do or don't want to follow.

Slavery is the act of calling another person your property, and treating them like you own them.

I think that slavery is the main reason for the civil war. If slavery wasn't there, then states rights wouldn't be a problem. The states believed they had the right to secede from the country, a state's right, over the issue of slavery. The south might not have seceded if not for slavery, and certain people being offended by it. (107 words)

  12. Once the states set free from Europe they were counted as free, independent, states. Each state claimed their freedom after the revelationary war and the Missouri compromise. Slavery got mixed in with everything, including states' rights. During the late 1800's slavery was a huge deal, it caused the Kansas Nebraska act and even the civil war.

I fall on the side of both, actually because the Missouri compromise was all about the states' rights which led to America dividing. But slavery was mixed in there bringing the Kansas Nebraska act, which was like a small civil war altogether. If No one had slaves and they did the work themselves were wouldn't have a war, and if the states agreed and compromised better we wouldn't have a war. We all just to be a happy family again.

  13. States' rights is the idea that each individual state held their own rights and powers rather than the federal government. The north and the south were very different and needed laws and rights that would work for them. Slavery is the system of owning a person who is forced to work excessively hard and obey their owners.
I think slavery is the main reason of the Civil War. The biggest issue on states' rights was slavery. The south wanted slaves to work on their plantations while the north had factories instead of plantations and didn't have a "need" for slavery. The north wanted to take away the south's "rights" to own slaves which made Southerners very angry. This made North-South relations worse and caused them to fight.

  14. Some people think that state’s rights caused the civil war which could be very much true because, if you think about it, America is stubborn and we have a long history dating back to the revolutionary war where Americans didn't want to follow laws and be on there own. Also, they felt like the Missouri compromise and popular sovereignty took away there freedom of choice.
Others think that the cause if the war was slavery which is very valid because John green made a comment that what caused states rights was the rights to have slaves. Also, people were tired of being owned and after a hundred or more years a couple people in the North saw that being wrong, finally, and decided to do something about it which in facet later caused the Civil war.

I personally think it was slavery that caused the war and nothing else. You could have many small solutions and theories but in the end it all leads back to slavery. It is like a tree. States rights may be the trunk and Abraham Licon may occupy a branch, but at the end of the day the roots are still the same. The roots (metaphorically speaking) of this tree (which is the civil war) is and always will be slaver. You can change the past but you can use it to better yourself in the future. #wisewordsfromholley

  15. There were two very, very different sides to this. The first were the people who thought slavery caused the issue. These people believed that if we had just not brought slaves over, the violence wouldn't have started. This side also believes in the fact that they are humans, and property.

I am one hundred percent on the first side. I absolutely believe that if we had never brought slaves over, there wouldn't have been an issue at all. The whole reason we brought them over was because we were lazy and thought that we were a superior race. I mean how would we have felt if we were being forced to work and ripped apart from our home and families?

  16. States rights refers to the trouble with the federal government and individual states over politics. It also symbolizes the opposition of some states to federal laws against racial problems. Slavery is the practice or system of owning slaves. Slavery also caused a lot of political problems and caused the North and south to fight. The side I think I fall on that caused the civil war is Slavery because Slavery was the main reason why the North and South got into conflict with each other and drove President Lincoln insane and caused the civil war. That's why I think the main reason how the civil war began was Slavery. 109 words

  17. State rights- State rights I don't think where the main reason for the war. State rights came into play after the war had already begun.
Slave rights- slave rights had everything to do with the civil war because the states would not have had anything to fight over without slavery. Slave rights where very limited and I think that made the war worse.
I am on the slave ribs side because if there where no slaves and they had not even been brought over I think that one that's just the right thing to do and two it ull have solved a lot of problems. But I also think without the civil war we would not be Amirica. 118 word count.

  18. Slaves were one of the worst things in America. Slaves where people but who were treated like animals of the opposite race, that would work anywhere you told them to. State's rights were where the State got to pick what was illegal and what was legal. You could either say, yes slaves are allowed, or no slaves aren't allowed.

I would fall under the states rights. I don't believe in slavery, and don't think it is okay at all. I don't think letting the state get to pick what they want to be is right, for example the Missouri Compromise. But I would and will never go for slaves. It was, in my eyes, the worst mistake in America History.

  19. States' Rights refers to the struggle between the federal government and individual states over political power. Slavery in America began when the first African American slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619 to aid in the production of such lucrative crops as tobacco.

I would fall on the states' rights side because slavery is just stupid. I believe that slavery should have never happened. States' Rights is stupid too because they got to choose if they wanted slaves or not. Like the Arkansas N Nebraska Act was just stupid to me, and it should have never been made.

  20. States rights weren't the thing that caused the civil war. States rights were basically just the idea that states could have their own laws or not have to agree with what the country said, they were talked about a lot. I personally think the cause was slavery because it was such an issue the north thought it was wrong but the south thought it was ok. The south thought it was their right to have the laws they wanted and they didn't have to agree because that was their right. I personally think that it was ok for the south to think they could do what they wanted but slavery was wrong and it didn't need to exist. So slavery caused the civil war.

  21. State's rights just said that each state could have their own laws and rights. Slavery was the biggest cause of the civil war and black people were considered slaves everywhere. Slavery couldn't be ended until the civil war happened.

I would say I'd fall onto the states rights category. Slavery wasn't okay. Treating people like animals because of their race or in general is terrible and it finally came to an end. States wanting to be there independent territory wasn't okay either, but slavery was definitely worse. Luckily our biggest issues got solved even though we went through the sadness of the civil war. 22. The cause of the Civil War is a widely debated topic. Many say that the a Civil War started because of state's rights. Some states back then believed that if the they didn't want to follow a rule, they didn't have to. Historians that believe that if the state's hadn't believed this, the Civil War could've been avoided. However, many people believe that the Civil War started because of slavery. If slavery hadn't been such an issue back then, they say that the entire war could've been avoided.

I believe that the cause of the Civil War all boils back down to slavery. The whole issue of state's rights is dealing with slavery.

  24. This was a widely discussed topic. Many say it started due to states rights. They believed that just because it was an enforced law/rule, they didn't have to follow them. Mostly historian states didn't believe this. They believed that the Civil War could not have been avoided. Many say that if there hadn't been such an issue with slavery that there wouldn't have been a war.

I believe that everything have to do with slavery. States rights definitely had to do with slavery.

  25. Slavery was one of the worst spots in our nations history. It caused many problems and wars that could have been avoided. States rights tried to enforce some rules to help keep slaves out of some states. Yet many people were against these laws.

I would have decided that slavery was the main cause of the Civil War. See, the whole bug topic that it will come down to is slavery, if we didn't have slaves, there wouldn't be states rights to own slaves. Then all the controversy over land wouldn't happen. There are many more reasons the war started, but the main reason was slavery. 106

  26. Without the whole slavery problem there would have been need for America to have a civil war.

The whole civil war was based on states rights, because states shouldn't have to listen to a compromise about wether they could have slaves or not.

I fall on the side of slavery is the main reason for the civil war. There would have been no need for the states rights side to be that way. The only reason states rights were "needed" was because of the debate of who was a free state and who was a slave state. Slavery was the only thing that was a major problem in America. The war wouldn't have been needed if we had just left the Africans in Africa. (Words 124)

  27. every article i looked up about states rights always said it was a main cause of the civil war. i personally think it had a major role in the cause of civil war, but so did slavery. the missouri compromise basically divided america, but so did slavery. the north voted for no slavery and the south wanted slavery. trying to find just ONE cause for the civil war is impossible. i personally think that all this stuff combined was just too much for america, which caused a war. so in my opinion, both states rights and slavery caused the war.

-The civil war was fought for states rights because states should have to listen to wether or not they can have slaves or not.

I would have been on the slavery side because it is obvious that the whole civil war was based around slavery. The reason for the civil war was slavery so that the slaves would not have to be harassed or beaten. There is also the fact that they wouldn't even need states right if it weren't for slavery. The fact is that if it were not for slavery there would have been no civil war.
