The First Two Postwar Presidents: Truman vs. Eisenhower

Truman and Eisenhower served as president during a very critical time during our nation's history. We had helped the Allies defeat Germany/Italy/Japan but were now faced with a new threat: the Soviet Union.

The late 1940s and the decade of the 1950s was a time of extreme economic growth in America coupled with extreme anxiety about the nuclear age. And of course, Truman and Eisenhower dealt with both in different ways.

For this week's blog, visit this website. This site is an incredible resource as we seek to compare the presidencies of Truman and Eisenhower.

Take your time and sift through the information, tables and graphs of each man. Then, in the comment section, make your case for which president you think "did a better job" in office. Be sure your response is at least 200 words.

Due to the end of the nine weeks happening on Friday, this blog is due by 11:59PM on Thursday of this week.

  1. In my opinion it's harry Truman because of the numbers that back him up and my personal beliefs go along with his more than they did Eisenhower. One of the key things I saw was the immigration harry kept it at a steady rate that I thought was a good number while Eisenhower numbers just went straight down and wasn't steady. Also the inflation harry kept it lower than Eisenhower how did when his was super high at one point and didn't keep it down. On the other hand harry did not pass as many acts as Eisenhower had passed and that made more of an impact and the one that he did pass was not as big or as important as Eisenhower. He did pass the defense acts that protected America but Eisenhower passed one that was one of the biggest acts to ever happen. One thing that they were similar in was the unemployment rate was pretty much the same exact. So they were similar and equal in that case. Also there approval ratings were somewhat similar because harry had the highest one but then he also plummeted while Eisenhower stayed consistent all the way through his presidency. But in my mind it was harry just by the way he ran it and the way he did his work and his mindset and his beliefs would relate to me more then Eisenhower which is actually surprising to be honest with him being more liberal and me being on the not as liberal side. 2. President Truman and president Eisenhower were both exceptional leaders. They were on opposing parties, but both overall had a pretty good approval rate, however Eisenhower's approval rate was overall higher than presidents Trumans. Regarding who I think did a better job as president, I would pick Eisenhower. He was a republican and stands for the same things I believe in regarding personal rights. He believes that abortion is wrong and it shouldn't be a unrestricted right for women, as well as being against sake sex marriage. He believes that God should be involved in everything we do. He also strongly agrees that we should hire women and also the minorities of America. While Truman also agrees with some of those things, overall Eisenhower agrees with more of the same things that I do. He's more conservative then Truman who is more liberal. President Truman and president Eisenhower have differing opinions on taxes as well, Truman believed that the weathier should be taxed more than the latter, whereas Eisenhower strongly disagrees. President Eisenhower is more conservative and believes in policies that would make the United States better and stronger in the long run. Such as expanding our military and staying out of foreign entanglements. It seems as though Eisenhower was more in tune with realistic ideas that helped us then and that will help us today. (225)

  3. President Eisenhower was iconic to the Post World War II era. He tried to reach agreements with the Soviets to cut back the arms race. Because the Soviets were so guarded about their military capacity, President Eisenhower ordered a U-2 flight over the Soviet Union in May of 1960. This was just weeks before a big summit with the Soviets over a reduction in missile and nuclear bombs. IKE believed he could reason with the Soviets knowing he would have new information from the latest U-2 flight. The Soviets knew we were using high altitude spy planes and developed a surface to air missile that had the capacity to shoot it down. Just before the summit was going to take place, the U-2 was shot down and the pilot, Gary Powers was captured alive. Despite the initial attempts to cover up the crash, the Russian's showed the crash site and the wreckage. Khrushchev used this to cancel the summit meeting. It has been noted by many historians, reporters, and other officials that President Eisenhower never stopped trying to limit the arms race. He had a successful economic record despite several sharp downturns in the economy in 1955 and 1957. There was labor unrest at the Ford and G.M. plants in Detroit.
President Eisenhower managed the problems that faced the nation in the 1950's. He also ordered Federal troops into Little Rock to break up anti-black riots over school busing. I think Eisenhower was one of the greatest presidents of our time. (252)

  4. I think that you can compare them in many ways just as they both agreed with legally requiring hiring woman in minority's. They were neutral on same sex marriage. They both wanted to keep God in the public sphere. The were disagreed on EGA regulations are too restrictive. They both wanted to make voter registration early. Truman Guided the American economy through a post war recession and started the racial integration of the military to the consternation of southern democrats. Eisenhower launched the interstate highway system, the national aeronautics and space administration and the Defense advanced research project agency and established a strong science education via he national defense education act. He signed civil rights legislation in 1957 and 1960 to project the right to vote African Americans. I think Eisenhower did a good amount of work to improve the country at a good rate. He needed to do to say what he did. The civil rights movement is insanely huge beacuse it had hugely impact. It changed the way we impacted the country as a whole. He sent 15,000 soldiers sent to the U.S to Lebanon to provent the pro-western government from failing to the revolution. I think Eisenhower was the better one of the two.

  6. This was a very tricky blog to do because both of these presidents had pros and cons. You see i agree and think they both did a good job just in different places then one another. One thing that makes me lean towards liking eisenhower more is his tax idea. He is not for taxing the rich in the other hand Truman is. Just because you put yourself in a strong and good position to make money doesn't mean the government should be able to take more money from you, it should be an equal tax rate no matter your income. Also Eisenhower saved the Suez Canal from being either destroyed or overturned into the wrong hands and because of that we still have it to this day. Another little fun fact about eisenhower is how he got the two states Alaska, and Hawaii to become part of the United States. Also a very major act the Eisenhower put into place is the Highway act which essentially changed the United States and they way that we travel forever. They were both "Christian" men and they both served two terms but if i would have to chose just one it would have to be Eisenhower. 204

  7. Both presidents honestly did a fine job but my vote has to go out to President Eisenhower. President Eisenhower did all he could to ease tensions with the Cold War and Korea. He concentrated on making world peace and did a pretty good job at it. He took the presidency seriously and selected a cabinet that included no personal friends.Eisenhower made greater use of press conferences than any previous president, holding almost 200 over his two terms. While he saw the benefit of maintaining a good relationship with the press, he saw more value in them as a means of direct communication with the American people. He implemented integration in the Armed Services in two years, which had not been completed under Truman he also signed a bill that created our now interstate system in the interstate highway act.He gave a U.N. speech that was well received but the Soviets never acted upon it, due to a concern for the greater amount of nuclear weapons in the U.S. arsenal.believed that if the communists were allowed to prevail in Vietnam, this would cause a succession of countries to fall to communism 202 words

  8. Both Truman and Eisenhower did a pretty good job as president, but I believe that President Eisenhower was more of the "people's man". In fact, during his campaigning, people were definitely more involved and excited about his campaign, and weren't afraid of what others believed. "We Like Ike" was a phrase heard everywhere around the country. Where's President Truman's awesome phrase? Campaigning aside, President Eisenhower seemed to put America first, and did what was truly right for the American people. He kept and maintained peace, had great morals for the country, and was a people pleaser. He also tackled the issue of racism in a respectful and honorable way. He was a general in the United States Army, and made sure that our country was always prepared for whatever could be thrown our way. President Truman did a very good job as well, especially coming out after the legacy of Roosevelt, and both I believe were great Christian men, but Eisenhower, in my opinion, did what was best for America, and lead us to success. He passed the Federal Highway Act, something that still impacts America today, the National Defense Education Act, and the Landrum-Griffin Act while president. Hawaii and Alaska were also made states under his term, which is very historic. President Eisenhower is my choice as the best of the two. (223)

  10. I think that overall, both Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower were successful presidents and were well known by tons of people. Each of them had their own way of doing things, which means that each of them would have their own "fan clubs" groups of people that don't like them. In my opinion, I think that Eisenhower proved himself more than Truman. When looking towards the bottom of the website, the comparisons of things accomplished wasn't even a close chance. Eisenhower succeeded in creating/supporting more acts and just overall, to me, giving the people what they wanted. There was a section that lists many milestones Eisenhower accomplished throughout his life and they just make the decision a lot easier. He had a big impact on easing tensions in the war and a big impact on many other things. Eisenhower had many strong beliefs and concerns about abortion, discrimination, and women's rights-- all of which are very easy to agree with and understand his point of view. One of the cons I noticed about him thought had to do with the environment. Although politics are very important for presidents to deal with, I think that some of his environmental decisions and thoughts weren't so great. In the end, I really think that Eisenhower showed up Truman during his presidency and is recognized for accomplishing more. (225)

  11. This is a very hard debate topic but if I had to say one I would personally have to go with Eisenhower over truman. At times I truly understand. Truman was at a great disadvantage during his time of presidency for he had much more on his plate. He had to wage a war and help with reparations as well as all of his others jobs of running this vast and great nation. He did a fine job with all that he had to deal with and still had some great success. However I have to go with Eisenhower for the fact that he really helped america thrive. Yes its true that he did start off in a better position than Mr. Harry Truman. He was a well known general, he was a highly respected character, and an idol amongst the people. But how he carried business after his time of being an idol made him great. He would have helped this country in its quest for peace with other nations and he would have done a fine job in helping with the national debt through his policies. Don't get me wrong, both would've been great but i have to give it to Eisenhower on this one. (207)

  12. President Eisenhower and President Truman will forever be remembered as the presidents who lead us through the dangerous and chaotic era of Post-World War Two. Both were passionate men of strong character who did their upmost to serve their country. But who did a better job? Truman, the scholarly man who was forced to make an impossible choice, but did so with a decisive action? Or Eisenhower, the strong and popular General turned president, who lead America through much of the Cold War, a time of paranoia and fear? Taking a look at their accomplishments, I cannot say with absolute confidence that one was better then the other. Both men accomplished great things in their presidency, yet both were, ultimately, men with their own personal shortcomings and weaknesses. Truman's handling of the dropping of the atomic bomb was, and is, the most controversial presidential decisions ever made. Eisenhower's arguably biggest failure was in his handling of the Cold War, he tried to make it better, but if anything he made it worse. On thing both men had in common was their failure to address McCarthyism. Being President is a enormously difficult job, often they face choices with no right answer. Both men did their best, and to me it is impossible to determine which one "did a better job" while in office.
