  1. The Hubble, which was the first major optical telescope that was placed in outer space. Above the surface of the atmosphere, far far above rain clouds and light pollution, the telescope, Hubble has an unobstructed view of the universe. Scientists have used Hubble to observe the most distant stars and galaxies as well as the planets in our solar system. Hubble's launch and deployment in April 1990 was the most significant advance in astronomy since Galileo's telescope. Because of the four servicing missions and more than 25 years of operation, our view of the universe and our place within it has never been the same.

The Y2k problem came to exist culturally beacuse of fear of computers would fail when there clocks where meant to update to January 1,2000. Other people claimed to be afraid about banks and traffic lights and the power grids. Other appliances like microwaves and televisions. When the date came and the computer clocks came around to January 1,2000 very little happened. With so much preparation and and updating programming relatively nothing happened at all and most people were looking like a fool

  5. In 1997 James Cameron would release an all time classic movie that is still celebrated to this day. Leanardo devinci played a young poor man who falls in love with a rich woman who had already rejected her first marriage proposal from a rich man. They meet each other and fall in love, it all plays out well in history and in our minds because we realize their fate to come. Which is the sinking of the titanic. Rose the main character lives and has a dramatic scene where she is letting go of Jack (leanardo devici) and he dies in the freezing Atlantic Ocean. It was a blockbuster and brought in over 1.8 billion dollars of revenue and ticket sales(122)

  6. For the cultural event google was invented in 1998, this obviously changed many lives. This isn't just a search engine either,it has now expanded into other things like language translation and they've created phones. I don't think anyone living in a populated country has not heard of google or used it at one point. This was also an important year for technology since apple reveals the iMac computer which also fuels for competition. Since we use google today that shows the significance is has on our culture in the past and even today, I don't think wed be able to be as educated as we are today without google to be honest. We always are looking up stuff on it and the phrase "Just google it" is more than a common appearance in today's society. (136)

In 1990 the Gulf war otherwise known as Operation Desert Shield was a conflict in the middle east. We went to war there due to Saddam Hussein ordering the invasion and occupation of neighboring Kuwait in early August 1990. Fellow nations called on the United States to give assistance in this. After bombing and going on the offensive otherwise known as operation desert storm. There was 42 of endless attacks until Bush called a cease fire, at this point most Iraqi forces in Kuwait had either surrendered or fled, this simmering conflict led to the second gulf war in 2003. 7. On August 11, 1991, an invention that we may not think to be huge now, changed the world. Now if you weren't at home and some one was to call you, you would have no way to answer or no way to tell what they needed. So when the answering machine came out into the market it allowed someone to call and if you were not at home to answer the landline phone then it would answer the phone and allow that person to leave a message. This is not as much as a needed product anymore because most people use a cell phone which comes with voicemail. (108)

In 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement came into effect. Before this came into effect there would be tariffs on the things that Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America would trade. After the North American Free Trade Agreement it did not take away all of the tariffs but it took away most of them which helped our county huge economically. Our President now, Donald Trump, is not exactly a big fan of NAFTA. He says that it sends Jobs and US manufacturing to Mexico and he says he wants to either withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement or to just rewrite it. (107)

  8. On November 7, 1991, basketball star Earl "Magic" Johnson announced his sudden retirement after being tested as HIV positive. HIV is the disease that eventually leads to AIDS. Johnson was one of the first of his time to publicly come forward and acknowledge his condition, and bring awareness to the issue. As a disease that is typically associated with gay, white men, Johnson broke the stereotype because he is a black, heterosexual man. After his retirement, Johnson's health improved, and he went on to be the face of HIV awareness and treatment.Johnson was a three-time NBA MVP, and was a part of the Olympic Dream team for basketball that won gold in Barcelona. On July 27, 1996, a bomb filled with nails was set off at Centennial Olympic Park at the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Before the bomb went off, a caller from a pay phone close to the park warned saying there was a bomb in the park that would go off in 30 minutes. The bomb actually went off earlier than expected. It killed a mother and was responsible for the death of a Turkish cameraman who died of a heart attack. Four other nail filled bombs were placed at other areas in the south, including Birmingham, Alabama. The culprit avoided authorities until 2003. Eric Robert Rudolph plead guilty to all of the bombings, and was sentenced to four counts of life in prison. (123)

  9. A new trend that thrust itself onto the '90s news scene came in the form of random terrorist attacks against Americans. With the first WTC bombing by a handful of Muslim radicals in February 1993, the precedent for terror was set. This was made worse with the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995, as it was caused by Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, two Americans. Yet these events seemed to only be precursors to the terror and challenges to come in the 21st century.

    In 1990 a new house cost $123,000.00 and by 1999 was $131,700.00
In 1990 the average income per year was $28,970.00 and by 1999 was $40,810.00. In 1990 a gallon of gas was $1.34 and by 1999 was $1.22. In 1990 the average cost of new car was $16,000.00 and by 1999 was $21,100.00. Homes in the 1990s
Effort was being made to construct affordable homes in several areas of certain locations in the United States. People either rented these homes or purchased them. Some of the types of homes most popular starting in the early 1990s included two story, split-level, and condominium homes. Ranch homes were also placed on the market quite frequently during this time. Numerous new home owners also purchased homes which were designed in a style representative of the old colonial homes-a design that is never outdated. 242

  10. The world wide web was created and became a huge hit it basically led to the world becoming more connected and it in turn led to the technology used today for social media because it made it where they could have others see what they had done or were doing on the internet and it became a huge hit of the 1990's. It's first test run was in 1990 and then they kept testing it until it finally was released later 1992 and that's when people got more associated with businesses using that to spread the stuff(97).

    O. J. Simpson murder that's all I have to say that was huge it was one of the best in the league he ran over everyone and left people in his dust and he murdered his family for what? What reason why did he have the chase in the white bronco or why did he do any of it. It also started a trend were major sports people end up throwing there careers away because they do something stupid and get arrested or killed. But it made headlines and people were so involved because he was a beloved figure until he did this because he was a great im the game of football. (210)

  11. The Simpsons defined the modern prime time cartoon of the '90s, and allowed other cartoons to be created in the same form, thrusting off old cartoon adages and combining new characters that everyday people could relate to with crude humor. This led to many new cartoons for the modern era, from Beavis and Butt-head to Ren & Stimpy, but the most successful by far for those coming of age in the late '90s was South Park, a show that continues to educate us still. And out of those cartoons came other popular cartoons such as Family Guy, which was also created in the '90s.

Former athlete and actor O.J. Simpson was implicated in the killing of his ex-wife, a white woman, as well as her possible lover in the mid '90s. As the trial dragged on, issues of bloody gloves and DNA shaped televised court room proceedings for years, but the emotional issues surrounding the couple's abusive interracial relationship caused different races and sexes to take different sides. Nonetheless, the event marked another time in the '90s that divided the country because of race or sex. Near 90 million Americans watched the trial, beating out the number of viewers of the super bowl that year.

  12. Trans World Airlines Flight 800 was a Boeing 747-100 that exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York, on July 17, 1996, at about 8:31 p.m. EDT, 12 minutes after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport on a scheduled international passenger flight to Rome, with a stopover in Paris. All 230 people on board were killed in the third-deadliest aviation accident in U.S. territory. Accident investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board traveled to the scene, arriving the following morning, and there was much initial speculation that a terrorist attack was the cause of the crash. Consequently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation initiated a parallel criminal investigation.Sixteen months later, the FBI announced that no evidence had been found of a criminal act and closed its active investigation.( 136)

Paula Corbin Jones is a former Arkansas state employee who sued U.S. President Bill Clinton for sexual harassment. The Paula Jones case precipitated Clinton's impeachment in the House of Representatives and the subsequent acquittal by the Senate on February 12, 1999. Charges of perjury and obstruction of justice were brought against Clinton. Eventually, the court dismissed the Paula Jones harassment lawsuit, before trial, on the grounds that Jones failed to demonstrate any damages. However, while the dismissal was on appeal, Clinton entered into an out-of-court settlement by agreeing to pay Jones $850,000 (equivalent to $1,250,000 in 2016). (102)

  13. In 1991 one of the most significant events to ever happen was by far the end of the Soviet union and the communist state in Russia. This was a very historic event across the globe as the falling of the Soviet Union led to the end of the great cold war between the US and the Soviet Union. This also brought back together Europe as the iron curtain would fall and eastern and western Europe would once again be united. The news of this brought peace into many people's hearts as the two nations constant threat of a war would finally be diminished. (103)

In 1997, Famous golfer now, Tiger Woods, wins the 1997 masters in Augusta, Georgia. This was his first major golf tournament win and would kick off what would go on to be one of the greatest golf careers of all time. Interesting enough, it was the largest margin of victory by a golfer in the masters as he won by a whole twelve strokes. It was considered to be one of the greatest golf performances by a golfer in one of the four major tournaments. This would only though be just one of his four masters tournaments he would win and on of 14 major tournaments as well. (108)
