  1. 1. What was William McKinley like, politically? Did he align with “big business” or the “common man”?
During the campaign of 1896, William McKinley, a Republican, endorsed the gold standard and tariffs to restore national prosperity. His views appealed to both labor and business. In 1900, McKinley campaigned against William Jennings Bryan. While Bryan criticized McKinley’s imperialism, McKinley quietly stood for “the full dinner pail.” His approach was to meet with small groups on his front porch rather than travel and give speeches to large crowds. Leon Czolgosz shot McKinley. He had lost his job during the economic depression of 1893 and turned to political anarchism. He regarded McKinley as a symbol of oppression and was convinced that it was his duty to kill him. He shot him twice. One bullet grazed the President, but the other entered his stomach and was never found. (58)

In McKinley’s first term, he didn’t want to support Cuba’s fight for independence from Spain. Roosevelt led the “Rough Riders” to support Cuba and worked to change McKinley’s mind. This effort and the Spanish-American War resulted in the expansion of the United States by adding Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, and later, Hawaii and the Panama Canal. When Roosevelt became president after the assassination of McKinley, he inherited McKinley’s policies and programs. McKinley had promised to continue his programs such as the gold standard and expansionism which promoted greater U.S. involvement in foreign nations. Roosevelt, expressed skepticism but vowed to preserve and expand McKinley’s programs. (106)

  9. 1)McKinley supported big businesses and his support for them was main reason for why he won the election. His opponent was Jennings Bryan who wanted to destroy the businesses and their business practices and greatly supported the common man. McKinley raised tariffs to promote American industries and stuck with the gold standard.

    3) He was killed by Leon Czolgosz during his speech. Leon had a revolver wrapped in a white handkerchief and went to the front of the podium. When he reached his hand out with the gun to McKinley and McKinley reached his out as well expecting to give him a handshake, but was instead shot point blank in the abdomen. Leon thought the government was corrupt and encouraged by a speech by Emma Goldman. Emma was an anarchist and stated that all world leaders should be eliminated.
