The 20th Century's Greatest Villain?: The Rise of Hitler

For this week's blog, do some research on the life of Hitler. Notice his early struggles and his rise to controlling Germany by the 1930s.

In the comments...

1) Create a 10 point timeline of Hitler's life that you think covers the most significant events in his life that lead him from being a WW1 soldier to leader of Germany. Each point should have a date and a brief explanation of what happened in his life at that time. This section must be at least 100 words.

2) Write a 100 word paragraph answering this question: "What was it about Hitler's personality and/or ideas that allowed him to gain as much power as he did over the German people?".

  1. Adolf Hitler was an Austrian/German born politician and the leader of the nazi party. He was chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945 and dictator of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. Hitler was also the leader of the holocaust.
July 1921- Hitler wins an election and becomes the leader of new political party which is nicknames Nazi. The party’s official name is National Socialist German Workers Party and it believes that equality is only for Germans, not Jews or immigrants.
April 1924 - The nazi’s tried to take over Germany and the government so Hitler iks sentenced to prison for five years for treason.
1933 - The Nazis, that was led by Hitler started to “get rid”or “eliminate” Jews from Europe. At this time the Nazi’s were startikng to open concentration camps and the Holocaust.

January 1939 - Since Hitler was such a central figure in the world at the time, Time Magazines named Hitler, “Man of the Year”. They said his actions of the Nazi party was “ruthless”.
December 1941 - Four days after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hitler declares war against the U.S. Although Germany had nothing to do with Japan, it was ultimately because Hitler wanted to be the center for WW 2.
July 1944 - After the third assassination attempt agasiknt Hitler, he escapes another bomb explosions in Berlin.
March 1945 - Hitler decides that since Germany has lost the war, the country doesn’t deserve to survive. He orders them to destroy railroads, highways, and other important parts of Germany but….the order is not obeyed.
April 1945 - Many people were out to get Hitler especially the soviet union and troops so Hitler committed suicide by shooting himself in the head while biting down on a poisonous cyanide capsule. (326)
Hitler is one of the most powerful men to this day. Although he may have used it in a negative way, the power that arose with him was inducible and something that isn’t common. Hitlers rise to power started when he became involved and joined the Deutsche Arbeiterspartei, which later became the nazi party. He realized he was a great speaker and a good leader and demanded that he be pushed further up the line. I think the way Hitler got to where he was was because he had faith in himself and pushed himself to be the leader. He knew that’s what he wanted so he did whatever he had to do to get there. (116)

2)In 1933 he started building concentration camps to kill the Jews.
3)Also in 1933 he was named chancellor by Germany’s president Paul Von Hindenburg, over the Nazi party.
4)In 1939 Adolf Hitler invaded Poland which caused the outbreak of WW2.
5)Then in 1941 Germany lead by Hitler occupied much of Europe.
6)1925 he wrote a book called “Mein Kampf” ( or my struggle) .
7)In 1940 his book that he wrote sold 6 million copies.
8)On September 15, 1935 he passed the Nuremberg Laws which took away the Jews German citizenship.
9)Then in 1940 Hitler started blitzkrieg (lighting warfare). Holland surrendered very fast and then Belgium did the same.
10)Then in 1940 June 22 France was forced into signing an armistice with Germany.(136)
From what I read he was a general then he became chancellor then the German president. He could speak in a way that made the audience or whoever he was talking to listen and side with him and he was an intimidating person. Although he was a terrible dude he could speak very well. I think this is why he became so powerful his determination and strive for want he wanted he didn’t let anything get in his way. Because of this he grew powerful. He also created this huge army of people. This army was very strong and big so they would just invade a country really fast and take over. These aspects are also a reason he became powerful was because of his war tactics.(127)

I believe him having a high role in Germany’s government and the way how he sort of brainwashed his people helped him a lot. But mainly I feel once he had power he had some brilliant ideas even though they were used for evil. One of his brilliant ideas was his attack strategy where he rushed with a lot of tanks at people slowly crippling them till they were no more. I also feel that he probably was supported by the Germans mainly until he started killing basically everyone he could but because of his role in power and everything I think people were scared to stand up to Hitler. Hitler was able to gain power at the rate that he did because of his way with words and speeches and the fact that many of the germans probably agreed with him when it came to foreign policy. Hitler was a really good speaker when it came to delivering public speeches and he could “manipulate” or use peoples emotions to fuel them to have the same diabolical ideas that he had for the country of germany. Hitler went from school dropout and college reject to the most evil and manipulative man the world has seen in its history. (100)

He joins the German Workers’ Party, an extreme anti-communist organisation. In 1923
He and General Ludendorff attempted to overthrow the Bavarian government with an armed uprising. The event became known as The Beer Hall Putsch. Hitler and 2000 Nazi’s march through Munich to the Beer Hall, to take over a meeting chaired by three of the most important individuals in Bavarian politics. January 1933

The thing about hitlers personality and ideals that allowed him to gain his power of the German people was his ability to relate and portray himself. Hitler appealed to the nations need of a reform through his ideals of nationalism, racism, and superiority. He protested himself as a man of revolution who new what was best and why it had become a nation that needed revolution. He have the people a sense of pride, duty, and purpose through his speeches in hopes of creating soemthibg greater. Through Hitlers ability to relate and appeal to bad circumstances around him he was able to gain power over Germany. (106)

  6. On April 20th, 1889 Adolf was born in Austria-Hungary to Alois and Klara Hitler, both from peasant backgrounds.
In 1907 Adolf moved to Vienna, Austria to attend to Vienna School of Art, but his application was declined because he was unable to prove he had graduated.
During the years of 1909 through 1913 Adolf was struggle to live in Vienna selling postcards of famous sights he had made himself along with several other minor jobs. He would also start to become politically active at this time.
In 1913 Adolf tried avoid military service for the Habsburg Empire by using a small inheritance from his father’s death to move to Munich, Germany.
In 1914 Adolf volunteered for the German army and joined the 16th reserve infantry regiment. He would be promoted to corporal and be decorated the Iron Cross.
In 1918 Adolf is sent to the hospital after becoming temporarily blind from a British gas attack, and returned to the regiment later that year.
In 1919 Adolf is appointed to the intelligence/propaganda section where he studies politics. He would start making speeches for troops advocating German nationalism and anti-socialism.
In 1921 Adolf challenges Anton Drexler as leader of the Nation Socialist German Workers Party(Nazi Party) and after some resistance Drexler agreed.
In 1931 Hitler challenges Paul Von Hindenburg on the presidency as leader of the second largest political party in Germany, but loses.
In 1933 Hitler the chancellor of a coalition government and Nazis have a third of the seats in the Reichstag.

In 1918 Germany forfeit the war because they felt as if they could not win it. Many veterans felt dishonor in this decision because they thought the war was winnable and that politicians and protesters had betrayed them. When Hitler was studying politics he became pretty much obsessed with this thought process and praised it to people putting the blame on the Jews. Germany was still very anti-Semitic and although Jewish culture was integrated into Germany, they were still seen as outsiders. Jewish success after WW1 led to accusations that the Jews were profiting off of the war. Hitler was very good at manipulating people with his speeches and found a lot of success by using anti-semetism to state that capitalism and communism were both created by Jews to destroy Germany.(131)

February 1908-When Hitler was 17 he moved to Vienna,
October 1918-While being in against the british Hitler was blinded by a mustard gas attack.

December 11, 1941-Around 4 days after Pearl Harbor the us entered the war and Hitler Delores war against the US.(143)

During Hitlers childhood he was born and raised into a lower class family. Which means he wasn’t raised with much. I believe this had an extreme impact on his adult life because he wanted to gain as much power as possible. He also suffered from the loss of his mother which put him in a deep depression. This could possible of has a impact on his outlook on life. Hitler turned into a very hard and rigged person which is a direct result of his past and what he has been through.(100)

Hitler came from a lower-middle-class family in Austria and he was not known as a charismatic person. Biographers have referred to him as “an empty vessel” outside of his political life. When he became chancellor in 1933, many Germans were still skeptical of him. But, Fühere propaganda and military success soon turned him into an idol. The newspaper headlines helped to create a certain bond between Hitlerand the German people. The August 4, 1934 headline read, “Today Hitler Is All of Germany.” That signaled the major shift in power from Reich President Paul von Hindenburg who died two days earlier. (100)
