Barbary Pirates: A Difficult Test in Jefferson's First Term

An often overlooked episode of American history involved North African pirates and our young navy. Jefferson's first term is often praised, and rightly so, for the Louisiana Purchase + the Lewis & Clark Expedition. However, his first four years were not all roses and ponies.

American merchants, constantly being harassed by European powers in the Atlantic, were now facing impassable waters north of Africa. Bribes were demanded. Threats were made. It was all very difficult.

Read these two links (one and two) and answer the following two questions in the comments section.

1) Describe the difficult situation we were put in by the Barbary Pirates.

2) How does the second link relate America's 19th century struggle with piracy to our 21st century struggle with terrorism?

  1. Well, they put us in a difficult situation by making us pay so they would not steal from us. So they were saying “hey if you pay this much money we will not rob your ships and may or may not kill your soldiers.” What happened was the fact that they upped their price on us which Jefferson did not agree to. This gave us even more problems considering our navy was still in bad shape. Plus , the English were still impressing us so it was all just bad.

They both have ransom where you have to pay to get someone back or to not get hurt.

  2. This weeks blog post is about piracy during the presidency of J
    Thomas Jefferson.

    1. The Barbary pirates put us in a very bad situation all together. First of all, they constantly were robbing, attacking, and terrorizing American Shipping boats. This made America look very weak and helpless. The situation was very hard to control, and in Thomas Jefferson's view, it was probably uncontrollable. It would have been very difficult for Jefferson to deal with, especially in his first presidency.

    2. I think that the Barbary pirates have a great similarity to the 19th century pirates and the current 21st century terrorists. All three groups are violently attacking, stealing, and ruining lives. It's sad to say, but these groups are all very similar. Although the terrorists are more advanced than the pirates, it's the same situation. Word Count: 139

  3. 1) The Barbary pirates put America in a difficult situation. While trying to remain neutral and not get involved with Britain or France. I mean that was hard enough. Then put the Pirates on top of it. All they really wanted was money. They would rob and attack our ships if we did not give them money .
    2) I think that all three groups were and are cruel. All of them wanted the same thing which was to be mean, they wanted money, I think attention in the 21st century , and lastly to just to take life's away from innocent people.

  4. During this time, when our navy was new and young Barbary Pirates took advantage of this and robbed our ships of money and needed items. This seemed to put more pressure on Thomas Jefferon on the choice of fighting or keeping neutrality. At the time Britain and France were also asking for us to step in on their war.

I think the struggle of the two fouls are linked is because they are robbing what is our, they are invading are space and doing whatever it takes, like taking innocent lives, and/ or capturing them. They are not all that different. 101

  6. We were constantly robbed, attacked and terrorized. It was very hard to control and made use look very weak. This made it very hard for Thomas Jefferson considering it being his first presidency. I think that if the terrorism had not been so bad, and the attacks had not been so violent that we would have had a much better chance and time fighting this battle.

Between them, there are similarities. They all where very violent and always robbing. The biggest difference is that the terrorist were way more advanced than the pirates. They both had the same theory and both fought so there wasn't really a difference.

  7. Our army was very new to the whole fighting. So with the American army so weak, the Pirates thought it was a good idea to stop their ships and rob them. Right before the American ships would stop at the coast they would start firing cannons and doing other things to the Americana no American ships.

I think they are both scary things to think about. I think they were broth groups that were Trying to be powerful and it worked for them. They wanted to hurt the people and do mean stuff to them because they either wouldn't trade with them or just because they wanted to.

  8. They put us in a very difficult position. We were forced to pay money so we wouldn't be attacked or stolen from. So basically we either had to give them money or bribes or they would steal it from us. Either we we had to lose money, and nobody likes to lose money.

Well they are both similar in a few ways like one of the ways is they both somehow make money the terrorist make lots of money over the years by takin hostages while the Pirates would steal money. Another way is the terrorist say either pay the money or we will kill the hostages.

  9. They put us in a difficult situation by forcing us to pay for their problems so they wouldn't have to that shows laziness. They said if we didn't pay them they would keep harassing us and stealing from us. When we didn't pay them it caused more problems and more conflict. It eventually got us into war which is not pleasant.
The Second article relates to this harassment we are going through now because the same thing is happening to us that has happened back then. The threats we have today are the same back then because if we pay the other countries that are hurting us today then maybe they would stop torturing us. But that may cause more problems with other countries too and we might have another war someday 132 words

  10. 1) The Barbary Pirates would put us in a horrible situation because it made our new navy look very weak. They just kept on attacking us, and we couldn't stop it. Even though America was a new country, it still didn't want to look weak. Another horrible situation it put us in was the fact that we were loosing money and some of our navy.

    2) ISIS, just like the Barbary Pirates, demands money for capture people. We still refuse to pay the money like we did back in the 1800's. Even though some people won't pay the money, ISIS and the Pirates made tons of cash.

  11. Since, Jefferson didn't pay them they were going to rob us of our ships. Which of course we didn't appreciate, so the fighting began between Americans and the Pirates. We thought we during the really well until, they started capturing captains and crews, but we did capture some ships. We tried our best, go America.

It was extremely similar. it started out with the Europeans paying the terrorists, who were kidnappers, and the United States refused to pay. The terrorists aimed more for the Europeans, because they payed more, or the ones paying. The Americans didn't like it, and I'm pretty sure no one did. Which happened with the Pirates, but we went to war instead.

  12. 1. The Barbary pirates put us in a difficult position. The kept stealing from our American ships, and they basically just said, that if you don't want us to rob your ships, you have to give us money. so either way, it made America look weak, and bad because we couldn't stand up to the Barbary Pirates. Jefferson wasn't really sure what to do, and I'm not surprised. It was his first year, and we were already being attacked.

    2. I think they are all very similar. Even now in the 21st centuries, people are stealing from us, and step by step running America. yes, the people now are more advanced, but that's because our culture is more advanced. Either way, they are both cruel.

  13. The Army we had was very new and not use to every thing. For us being so new to every thing it made it so easy to make us look weak and so much more. But also they were putting us In a very difficult place to be at time.

They have some similarities but also they are very scary things to think about. Both were trying to be as powerful as they could be. They both fought and would have held hostages which in all wasn't very good. My opinion they weren't very different at all they had same ways in most ways if you think

  14. 1. The barbary pirates were basically making fun of America. They were bribing us so they could have more money because they were robbing our ships. They wanted money to stop robbing our ships. We probably were feeling very hurt at this point. These pirates were probably tearing the ships up. So paying them would be really bad. Jefferson was probably super pressured because he had a super important decision to make in his first year.

    2. When I actually think about it I think that there actually kind of similar. Piracy was happening a lot and a lot of things linked to piracy was probably happening to. Terrorists attacks are almost always happening in other countries and even some in America. Word count: 120

  15. 1. America, as a small and new country, was harassed unendingly by North African pirates. Essentially, the crews on the ships was forced to pay a bribe, otherwise they would either be killed or captured. Eventually, Jefferson had enough of it, and decided to fight back.
    2. Modern-day terrorism and 19th century piracy both relate to one major concept; terrorism. Today, terrorism is virtually always committed in the name of religion. However, most people back several hundred years ago in the piracy industry were usually in it for the money and personal gain rather than support for a certain group or cause.

  17. 1.) We were made fun of and it definitely put us in a difficult position. We were taken advantage of and you could even say robbed for sure. It honestly took longer than it should've for us to actually fight back. We tried to keep peace but it didn't work so Thomas Jefferson helped us regain what we lost.
2.) it is very similar. We still get taken advantage of and robbed from. Attacks are still happening all around the world. We are also still somewhat trying to stay peaceful even though in parts of the world we have to stand for others and the safety of ourselves. (108)

  18. 1. The Barbary Pirates put us in a very difficult situation which we did not want to be in at all. They had wanted us to pay them money so they would not steal anything from us. They also wanted us to pay them so they wouldn't have to steal/rob us or from our ships. But they still stole/robbed from our ships. They also kept attaching our ships.
    2. I think that these two are similar because they all wanted money and also to take innocent people's life's which was very cruel. Also, because they robbed from us.

  19. 1) I The Pirates made us look like a week country. It made us look small and helpless, which was embarrassing for Jefferson. I think that Jefferson could've done really nothing about it but it made it look like he wasn't doing anything about it. So they were very big harassment.
    2) I think that the Pirates do the same thing as Isys another tear groups. Their goal is to accomplish harm to others to gain for themselves. Even if the harming others was not intended. I think it is affecting us the same way also. In the sense that is embarrassing and we really have no control over it. No matter how hard we try to get rid of them or to fight them off they still come back and will not go away. So yeah it's a big embarrassment but the president can not do as much about it as we want him to.

  20. Well, essentially the Barbary pirates were black mailing us. These pirates would wait for one of our American ships to pass and say that if we didn't Pay them money than they would rob our ships. This was a HUGE problem at this time. They were mocking us, and stealing from us.

    2. There really aren't a lot of differences between terrorists today and terrorists back then. Right now we are struggling with ISIS. Terrorists don't always target specific people or groups. Sometimes it is completely random, yet sometimes, it's targeted to a specific person or group to grab The peoples attention.

  21. The Pirates in North Africa put us in a very difficult situation. Due to the fact that Jefferson would not pay the tribute, the Pirates attacked our ships, preventing them from crossing the ocean. If our ships could not cross the ocean, they could not trade. Without trade America's economy could possibly plummet due to the loss in revenue coming from foreign trade.

The issue of the Pirates in the 1800's and ISIS today are very similar. Both opposing forces demand ransoms for prisoners or safe passage through their territory. Both of these forces also get governments to bend to the will of them and end up making them pay the ransom instead of refusing. While both these issues are completely different because of the time periods, they are similar in the goals of the enemy.

  22. America decided to halt the tribute to the Barbary Pirates. So a war between small and scrappy American Navy and the Barbary pirates ensued. A decade later a second war settled the issue of American ships being attacked by pirates. The issue faded for about two centuries.

Just like the United States decided not to pay the pirates we also want pay Europe. There was plenty of hypocrisy to go around back then. North African rulers were motivated by cost-benefit analysis and profits not by morality. The U.S. Ambassador described it as a protection racket. So just like the 19th century the U.S. still will not pay the other countries, and that's causing terrorism. Word count 117.

  23. 1. After the Philidelphia got grounded it was attacked by the Pirates inside the pirate's harbor ,and the mainly the reason why we got into war with the pirates is because Thomas Jefferon thought that paying tribute to the pirates would cause more problems than not paying them and getting attacked.

    2. Paying their ransoms back then and still today allowes them to continue attacking us and doesn't not stop them it only helps them. One difference is that the money is greater now than it was back then, but back then it was worth more because things were not as expensive, and we were a newer country but the weapons and other things nowadays. 24. 1. in all honesty, the barbary pirates werent a really good thing for americans. they really really just wanted money. the harrased us and attacked us, making it obviously very difficult for everyone. war is never a calm and easy situation.... its very difficult. alot of bad things can happen if someone attacks a boat, all leading to deadly things. so its very clear that the barbary pirates didnt make the navy have an easy boat ride.

    2. personally, i think that the piracy and the terrorist attacks are similar because its both about other countries fighting america and making us look weak. they both are not being fair to america. whether its because of money pr its because of religion, both groups just wanted to tear america apart and harm as many people as possible.

  25. The Pirates gave us a hard time when we get up near the top of Africa. Most of the Pirates would get onto our ships and take them over. They would claim them and make our men prisoner. Pirates were mean people. They would take whatever they thought would be valuable.

The Pirates reflected when we were being impressed. Because the Pirates would invade our ships and make us prisoners on their ships. It also could relate to when terrorism now. The terrorists would come and take our people and make them prisoners of their places. They also take thing form people.

  26. 1) The Barbary Pirates attacked ports, took sailers as slaves, and plundered the ships. Countries were forced to pay tribute to the pirates so they would not attack their ships. Muslim pirates considered Americans to be infidels and thought that they had the right to plunder American ships. Jefferson refused to pay the tribute. America went to war with the Barbary pirates.
    2) In both cases, America refused to pay ransom to the people who kidnapped their citizens. In both cases, the group terrorized many countries all over the world. Terrorism and piracy are growth industries and can receive a large sum of money for each hostage.

  27. 1. The barbary pirates put us in the situation of war. Even though we did not want to go war were kinda forced to because they kept attacking our ships even though we didn't do anything. Then later we gave them a reason by refusing to pay the tribute. Though I don't think that the tribute was a good idea in the first place. But they pretty much just put us in a bad situation that we didn't want to be in.

    2. Well they are similar because they were doing these things in the same beliefs i mean they are different religions but they did in because of their beliefs in that religion. They also did this for ransom or for the money. Really the only difference between these two different times we had hard struggles in that one was on water and the other on land but besides that they were really kind of the same.
