Stono Rebellion + Bacon's Rebellion: Colonial Strife

One thing not to be missed during the colonial era of America is the mixture of three distinct cultures: Europeans, Native Americans and Africans. Two of those groups, natives and Africans, did not ask or volunteer to "learn to live with" the other groups. Africans were forced to North America as slaves and natives were essentially invaded by the Europeans.

So, it should be no surprise that conflict arose in the colonies. Two of the most famous examples of colonial conflict, in the Southern colonies at least, were Bacon's Rebellion and the Stono Rebellion.

For this week, visit these two websites for Bacon's Rebellion (one and two) and these two sites for the Stono Rebellion (one and two). In the comments section, list TEN FACTS FOR EACH rebellion. Then discuss your thoughts on ONE of the rebellions from this week. What did you learn that you did not know before this week?

  9. Here are my ten facts for both of their rebellions:

    Bacon's Rebellion:
    1. Bacon's view was "We must defend ourselvesagainst all Indians in generall, for that they were all Enemies." He basically strongly disliked indians.
    2. Bacon had a group of people who wanted to kill the indians.
    3. In 1675 the governor denied Bacon's request to attack the Indians, but he ead the soldiersinto battle anyway.
    4. Bacon's possy met a friendly group of natives called the Occaneechees and made them capture an unfriendly tribe. When the Occaneechees brought back captives, Bacon killed the captives then killed and betrayed the Occaneechees.
    5. Governor Berkely charged Bacon for treason and arrested him when he returned to Jamestown.
    6. The usual punishment for treason was death, but Berkely didn't sentence him to it.
    7. Bacon later brought 500 men to demand a commisionto attack the indians, so berkely was forced to give it to him.
    8. Bacon then mindlessly pursued attacking indians.
    9. The next time Bacon returned to Jamestown, the governor fled.
    10. He died in October probably because of dysentery.

    Stono Rebellion:
    1. In September ,1739, agroup of slaves marched down the roads with signs saying "LIBERTY!".
    2. While they marched through, they recruited more slaves and ended upwith over 100 by the night.
    3. It isn't clear what triggered the rebellion.
    4. They had heard stories of groups of runaway slaves going from South Carolina o Florida, wheer they were given land and freedom.
    5. These escapes triggered the "soon-to-be Security Act" on September 9th.
    6. In mid-August the Security Act was official.
    7. This Act made white men carry guns to church for safety.
    8. Anyone who didn't carry a gun would be fined.
    9. Later, about 20 slaves went to a local gun shop and bought ammunition and guns.
    10. They then mindlessly killed the shopkeepers and many others. The slaves also burned down people's houses.

    My Thoughts:
I think that even though the Stono Rebellion was mindless, it made sense why they did it. The whites had mistreated them for years, and this was there way of getting revenge.

Bacon’s Rebellion had some good and bad aspects to it, as it did change how government
should function, but also took land away from Natives. Bacon’s Rebellion has changed how government functions today in one primary way: listening to the people. For all we know, the government could work totally different today if Bacon didn’t stand up for the people and practically riot for what the people wanted. Unfortunately, this also has a down-side. Berkeley tried to treat the Natives especially kind, however, the people did not agree with this. Since Berkeley refused to change his thoughts, the people rioted and pretty much forced Berkeley to take the land from the Natives. Although this event in History changed the way of governing, Natives lost their land that they deserved, and there was much civil unrest.

  19. Bacon had wanted to kill or drive out every single Indian in Virginia. Bacon's Rebellion had demonstrated that poor whites and poor blacks could be united in a cause. Bacon and his followers had marched to a fort that was held by a friendly tribe, known as the Occaneechees. They convinced them to capture warriors from an unfriendly tribe. The Occaneechees had returned with captives. Bacon's Rebellion was probably one of the most confusing yet intriguing chapters in Jamestown's history. Bacon was intelligent and eloquen. Bacon's Rebellion can be attributed to a myriad of causes, all of which led to dissent in the Virginia colony. On October 26th, 1676, Bacon abruptly died of the "Bloodie Flux" and "Lousey Disease" (body lice). It is possible his soldiers burned his contaminated body because it was never found.
On Sunday September 9th, 1739, the British colony of South Carolina had been shaken. Led by an Angolan named Jemmy, a band of twenty slaves organized a rebellion on the banks of the Stono River. The band had reached the Edisto River, where white colonists had descended upon them, which ended up killing most of the rebels. A malaria epidemic in Charlestown, which had caused general confusion throughout all of Carolina, may have influenced the timing of the Rebellion. A passage of the Security Act by South Carolina Colonial Assembly may have also played a role. After the Stono Rebellion, South Carolina authorities had moved to reduce provocations for the rebellion. Masters were penalized for imposing excessive work/brutal punishments of slaves . A school was started so that slaves could learn Christian doctrine. The Assembly had enacted a new law requiring a ratio of one white for every ten blacks. Also it had passed the "Negro Act" of 1740, had which prohibited enslaved people from growing their own food, assembling in groups, earning money they, and rather than their owners, could retain or learning to read.

My thoughts on stones rebellion is that it was really unnecessary. They used violence and look where it got them. A ton of captured and dead people. Then, look at Martin Luther King. He used peaceful protests and actually made a difference. If only they had a martin Luther King back then. I learned a lot of stuff because I had never even heard of stones rebellion in my life so pretty much everything in these two websites we had to read was what I learned.
