Andrew Jackson: His First Inauguration

So...Jackson is somewhat of a game-changer. He was certainly the first of his kind to hit the national spotlight. As you will see throughout the coming weeks, much of what made him unique and popular also led to his controversial actions while President.

This week, you will read this account of Jackson's 1829 Inauguration. Answer the following questions for the blog:
1) Did Jackson's Inauguration seem "presidential" to you? Why or why not?
2) Why were people reacting this way to Jackson when they had not acted this way for Presidents 1-6?

29 comments:

  1. Yes I think the way he was inaugurated was very "presidential" like. The way the lady described everything in her letter was a very high class one honestly. They had everything in order along with many people and how they were treating him with respect and kindness.

Because the way Jackson stated things during his running for office. He made it clear that people should run things it's their way. So when he became president people would rule. So therefore it was Presidents' Day and that day would be their day and they would help rule since they choose him.

  2. 1) I think it did seem like a presidential inauguration. It was pretty much just like all of the other presidents. The only thing different about Andrew Jacksons inauguration was there were probably ten times more of people at it because he was so popular and favored
2)I think the reason they were acting this way was because all of the Jackson followers thought it was wrong what John Quincy Adams and Henry clay did,and now that Jackson came back out and got revenge they wanted to make it a bigger deal that he beat them instead of him becoming president

  3. 1. I would deem Andrew Jackson's inauguration very "presidential. Jackson gave a speech. He was sworn in by the Chief Justice and was presented with a Bible which Jackson took into his hands and kissed. Jackson even bowed to the people, showing that he was a man of the people and that he would to his best to be a good president.

    2. Andrew Jackson was America's first "Frontier President." He did not come from an east coast elite family. He was basically an ordinary man and his victory was a victory to every common man. The people were excited to have someone like them become their president.

  4. 1) The inauguration was very presidential, I think. It was very different though. Andrew Jackson was a very popular guy back in this era so I would think that more people that came to the others. The chief Justice sworn him in with the Bible which was the symbol showing that you were going to loyal to you country. Jackson kissed the Bible.

    2) The people probably acted this way because he was so popular and most everyone loved him. When he was first in office many countries attacked the United States. He thought everyone should follow what he said and that there should be no taxes.

  5. 1. I think that Jackson's inauguration was very presidential because like George Washington He kissed the Bible after his speech and that was considered presidential back then. The fact that he bowed to the people was presidential to me.

    2. They acted badly when Jackson was president and not when the other six presidents because In his speech Jackson said that he would do things for the people but what he really did was do things just for himself not what was best for the United States of America. They also acted badly because the things that President Jackson did wasn't good for the country. 103 words.

  6. 1. Yes I do think that the way he was inaugurated was very presidential. The Chief Justice had sworn him with the Bible. When he was sworn, he gave a speech and afterwards he kissed the Bible. If you kissed the Bible after your speech it means that you were going to be loyal to the country and do all you can to make the country great.
    2. I think that they acted this way with Jackson and not the other six presidents was because he was one of the most popular presidents. Everyone loved him and wanted him to be president. But when he became president for the United States, he only cared about himself and did things only for him and not the people for America.

  7. Jackson's inauguration seemed very presidential, maybe even over the top. It did sound like the traditional inauguration, but add about 4x as much people, fainting ladies, and men with bloody noses. There was one account that said that Jackson had to retreat from the crowd, until a group of men had to form a human barricade to protect him. One reason why people might have not acted this way with presidents 1-6 is because there wasn't as harsh of political attacks against each other, until Jackson and Q. Adams. It was a very dirty fight and hit had a lot of tension. Q. Adams was the formal presidents son, and Jackson was the war hero. Many people admired Jackson, and beholded him as their "majesty." 125

  8. 1. Whether or not the inauguration was presidential or not really depends on how you want to define it. From a literal standpoint, Jackson was sworn in, therefore the inauguration was presidential. However, from a figurative standpoint, it seems as though Jackson was mistreated when being sworn in; he wasn’t even able to access the white house!
    2. This was probably due to the radical election that had occurred – you either liked him or you hated him. There was controversy to much extreme throughout the race, which influenced some to deliberately induce conflict. It almost seems reasonable to compare this to a modern day race. Donald Trump is a very controversial candidate – most people either like him or hate him, with those with moderate feelings being insignificant. Those who radically hate him are doing everything to the best of their abilities to stop him. This appeared to have happened similarly to Jackson – people tried to shut him down even after he was elected.

  9. 1. I think that Jackson's inauguration was presidential. He kissed the Bible, he took the Oath of Office, made a speech, and bowed to the people listening to his speech. He followed all the precedents made by the people before him, so I'd say it's presidential.
    2. Jackson was a "frontier president". He didn't come from the New England states like the previous presidents had. Also, many Jackson supporters were acting crazy because of the corrupt bargain that had happened in the previous election. They thought that he should've won the last election, even though he didn't, so when he did finally win the election, they went crazy.

  10. 1) It did seem presidential. The way people acted was not. I think this because it was really a lot like the first inauguration. He did all god the same things George Washington. Most inaugurations are loud but everyone was quiet and didn't speak a lot
    2) I think that they acted like that because a lot of people didn't like Jackson and they didn't think that he was going to do a lot of things good for the US. People thought that Adams should have won or that someone else should have won and that he wasn't good enough to be president.

  11. One, he did the oath, kissed the bible, gave an important speech, but the way he got his inauguration was sly. He was suited for the job and showed that to the people. I think it was in the middle. He followed the tradition and looked presidential, but acted like a child. I think he was a great president

Two, Jackson was different from everyone else. He wasn't from England states, plus he was a war hero. Another reason would be the conflict between Jackson and Adams. That election and presidential times shocked everyone. Also, both had rumors that people didn't want to believe, but for Jackson his rumors were true and that scared/threw people off. But his supporters weren't going to let that ruin his presidency times. So, they got crazy.

  12. 1.) Yes it was definitely presidential. Andrew Jackson was inaugurated basically like all the others there were just tons more people there supporting Jackson because he was an American war hero. He had all the attributes people wanted to see.
2.) I mean Jackson should've won the first time so when they finally got there full patriotic war hero as a president they celebrated. Jackson made it clear that he should've been the one to win. He finally got what he wanted when he ran a second time and nobody seemed to have any regrets because they saw he was responsible for the role of president. (106)

  13. This weeks blog post is about Andrew Jacksons Inaugurations.

1.) I think that Andrew Jacksons inauguration was kind of half and half. It was presidential and official, but not as official as the previous presidents. Jackson was viewed as a war hero, and in my eyes, he was more of a war hero than a politician. I'm not saying he wasn't a good president, but I think others have been better. Jackson did some good things for our country, and also some bad. One bad thing being his war with the national bank.

2.) I think Jackson had such a big fan base, because of his fame during his wars. He was well known for being a good guy, so people wanted him to be president. He was very popular and good at what he did. Presidents 1-6 where not nearly as popular as Andrew Jackson. The only one that came close to him George Washington.

  14. 1)It seemed to be just like any other inauguration. He did everything that was required of him.The only thing that made it different would be who was there.People from different social ranking and background were all there for the same reason.

2)They probably reacted the that way that they did at the inauguration because Andrew Jackson was a president that they could relate to.They were most likely as excited as they were because they felt more represented in government,as they finally had a president that was self made and had a background similar to their own. 15. I think that Jackson's inauguration was very presidential. He was sworn in and he gave a speech. He was probably very favored and popular there was probably lots of people at his inauguration also. He kissed the bible and bowed.

They probably acted this way because they really liked h or disliked him. His supporters probably wanted him to win so badly that they were willing to do whatever it took to help him when. The other president had more political campaigns also and they weren't just about mudslinging and they didn't only want to destroy the other candidates reputations.

  16. No, I don't think that Jackson's inauguration was presidential. Sure, his speech and entrance were very modest, but the way the people chased after him and stormed the White House wasn't. No president should ever have to deal with a mob like Jackson did. It was totally uncalled for and those people should be ashamed for what they did.

I think the people at Jackson's inauguration acted the way they did for him rather than the first six presidents was because he was a president who was the image of a commoner. He also campaigned to the everyday person and treated them all as equals, unless you count slaves. He was also from the "west" in America at that time, rather than the elite and rich in the east.

  17. 1. I do believe that his inauguration was very presidential. He did a lot of traditional things including: kissing the Bible, bowing after, sworn into office, and gave a speech. That seem pretty "presidential" to me.

2.I believe they acted like that because he was seen as "normal" or a common person. He treated they all equally and never changed the way he spoke to people while he was "doing his job" or being president. Not many of the other president actually not any or the presidents acted like Jackson did. Most were stuck up and that was not him at all.

  18. 1. Maybe because they could not hear home because it was so low and they may have not known at all what he was saying so I guess it could but at the same time it could also not be because of the fact that no one could really hear Jackson giving his inauguration address.

    2. He was a national war hero who had also just lost his wife and was are youngest president so far, and he won because of what goes on now in our elections which was started by them technically so he was a very important man and love like George Washington by many and was a big part of the overall party of that time.(Word count 120)

  19. Do I think that Jackson's inauguration was presidential. I'm going to be completely honest with you I absolutely think that Jackson's inauguration was far from presidential. Like before he even became president him and his wife were talked about. His runner-ups were against him and bashing him and his family. Groups were outside of the White House basically rioting, and marching outside of the White House.

I think people where acting like this because of the things that Adams told them. I think that the people where influenced from all of the negativity from the presidential debates. I think it's from the riots and marches from both of the groups. There was so much mud-slinging from both candidates, and this influenced all of the people to be so violent. The people had never experienced so much drama and controversy it was all so much for them because all of the past presidential debates weren't like this one. So that's the reason why I think they had so much violence and controversy.

  20. 1. I believe that his inauguration was very presidential. His inauguration was very normal. He kissed the Bible, he gave a speech, sworn into office, and he bowed after he was finished. That was very routine and normal.

    2. I think that they acted like that towards them because of the way that he was depicted. He was depicted as a very common person. He treated all of the people just like he would treat himself. Most of the other past presidents treated everyone like they were lesser. Jackson was a very very chill guy and he did not like the fact that he was supposed to be a higher person.

  21. 1.) yes and no. yes because it was obviously in DC so that made the inauguration obviously like any other. But I think having people follow him, and line up down the sides of streets, made it special. Personally, I would love having lots of people their, but at the same time I wouldn't want everyone following me, and getting in lines, and reaching my personal space. So I would say it could go either way.

2.) I would want to have been their too. Jackson finally beat Adams so it would have been a big day. I think Jackson was a hero to them, for finally being elected and winning agonist his "enemy" you could say. People were excited for him, and wanted Jackson to know how many people stood up for him. I would have done the same thing.

  22. 1. Jackson's inauguration was somewhat presidential. He did give a speech, but it was kind of unanimous vote for Jackson. There was not a really unanimous for any other one of the presidents besides Washington. Jackson's inauguration ceremony was actually very traditional. There was many differences, but many similarities.

    2. Jackson was a very popular war hero. He was also one of the most popular people. He was also considered a common person. He was also supported for what happened with John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay with the Jackson and Quincy election a few year earlier. A lot of people including Jackson wanted revenge for what happened in that election.

  23. 1) Did Jackson's Inauguration seem "presidential" to you? Why or why not?
It seemed more like the oscars to me. The only thing that actually went well was the fact that, at the beginning, all people of different races, age, and gender were coming together to unite in a celebration as a country. After that it became like a c invert. People craning to touch the singers hand. Fighting to just get a look at were he will sleep. It seemed way to commercial for a inauguration to me.

    2) Why were people reacting this way to Jackson when they had not acted this way for Presidents 1-6?
The best way to find this out is to go back in time I and ask, but since this isn't mr. Peabody and Sherman. I think they acted this way because he was the first “frontier” president. Things could get a little rowdy. Also I think it went this way because of how dirty the campaign was. They literally battled to the death trying to get this title of leader when in the end it was, as the article said, the people who would run this nation.

  24. 1. to me, jacksons inauguration seemed presidential. he did all that was expected that a president should do. honestly, he did his inauguration like the presidents before him and exceeded the expectations. the way the people acted, wasnt "normal" in my opinion.

    2. jackson was a man of trust and a war hero. a lot of people loved him. jackson said straight up what his plans were and what he would do to make our country better, and i respect that. jackson was also determined, which is a good trait to have. jackson had some things said about him by adams that were true so some people didnt really like him because of those things.

  25. 1. Jackson's inauguration did seem presidential to me at least it may have been a little chaotic or crowded but it seemed real to me. To me the way it looked presidential was how he gave a speech to the public and they were all there supporting the new president and seeing for themselves if they really were going to except him or not to see just how he would do his job.

    2. I believe that the reason that the public was acting that way was because they really wanted to see Jackson and support him as the new president of the U.S.

  26. Jacksons inauguration was very unpresidential because it looked like a cheat. The reason it looks like a cheat was because he had a tie and then he won. I think his inauguration was very hectic and Insein. Is inauguration was unfair and I think it was unnecessary for him to win and become president because a whole lunch things happen after that.
    2) The public is reacting to Jackson's inauguration like this because looked like he was cheating. And he never had anything nice to say so they were very frustrated with him and I don't think any of the presidents in the past had reacted or said the things that he had said. (114)

  27. Whigs were active between the years 1833 to 1856. Whigs supported the National bank and supported the Protective Tariff. They believed in the natural harmony of society. They also believed in the value of community.

Andrew Jackson was the party's first major leader. The Democratic Party was founded in 1828. They were against the Protective Tariff and the National Bank. Jackson worked to bring the National Bank down. They supported the Mexican War. They favored rapid territorial and external growth. They glorified the individual they also believed everyone could hold office.

If I were alive back then I would join the Whig party because they supported good things and the Whig Party sounds like a good Political Party. 118 words
