Political Parties: Whigs vs. Democrats

The first political factions were the Federalists vs. Democratic-Republicans. As we moved into our second generation of leaders, two new parties emerged: Democrats vs. Whigs.

Visit this website and this website to get a feel for what each stood for in the 19th century.

For the comments section, summarize the beliefs of EACH party. Also, which party would you have joined if you were alive back then?

29 comments:

  1. The Democrats belived in the state's rights. They were against the protective tariffs that Jackson had placed and he National Bank. They glorified people's beliefs and supported the Mexican War. They thought the ideal citizen is a farmer. They belived that everyone could hold a position in office. Rapid Terriotrial and exeternal growth. They favored states rights.

The Whigs wanted to have a strong federal government. They supported the Protective Tariff and the National Bank. They belived in the natural harmony of society. They were industrial and nationalists. They supported Congress and its decisions that were made. At first they didn't agree with anything that the democrats had said.

  2. The Whigs were different they would actually listen to congress most of the times and listen to what they had to say about different situations. They didn't agree with anything the Democratic Party said at first but I think it was just how everyone acted back in that day honestly. They really wanted this strong well put government together is what they wanted more than anything probably .

The democrat party was different the Whigs wanted a well put government but the democrat were more of states were what they wanted they focused more on their rights and such like that then the government. They would usually encourage that everyone could have a place in the office postion of some type.

  3. The Whigs and democrats were very different. The democrats believed in a state focused government that was run mainly by the people. They also believed in rapid expansion of land. On the other hand you had the Whigs. The Whigs beloved in a strong national government, which would be run mainly by congress. They also believed that land expansion should be gradual instead of gaining lots of land at once. If I was a alive back in this time, I would most definitely choose the Whig party. I would because I think that we should elect people to run our government because I think it is the smoothest way to voice lots of opinions, because the states choose who they want to have in congress, so they can really voice what your state likes. I also think that land should be gained over time, because it is easier to settle smaller pieces of land and govern it rather than a massive chunk of land.

  4. There are several differences between the Whigs and the democrats the Whigs listened to congress they did not rebel they just obeyed. But they did have there opinions. The democrats on the other hand had very very very strong opinions. They exspectioally had strong opinions on state right which I think is good but in moderation.

I would have been on the Whigs because I would not like feeling like I was constantly in trouble it would be like hanging out with the "bad kids" and I would not want to get in trouble even if I was not doing anything plus I think that the Whigs had a lot more respect for there country

  5. The democrats always opposed the Whigs. The democrats wanted the states government to have more power and the federal government to not have as much. Jackson was leader of this party. I think one thing that may have made the democrats and Whigs hate each other was because of their leaders. Andrew Jackson and Henry clay were always arch rivals. So I think that maybe a reason they were against each other.

The Whigs were right the opposite and wanted a stronger more powerful federal government. They didn't have just one leader they had a few, but their main one was Henry clay.

I think if I had to choose I would be a democrat because I feel like each state has a different Need and not all are the same surroundings, but I would also want a strong federal government.

  6. The Whigs and the Democrats supported two very different things. The Democrats favoured states' rights and didn't like a strong federal government. They didn't like the Protective Tariff or the National Bank either. The Democrats main leader (during this time) was Andrew Jackson. The Whigs were basically the opposite. They were in favour of a very strong central government. They also supported the National Bank and protective tariffs. For this reason, the Whigs were popular in the North.

If I was alive back then, I would have been a Whig since the Whigs later became the Republican Party.

  7. The Democrats were in favor of state rights which means they believed in state rights. They believed that the federal government being involved in social and economic affairs were wrong. The democrats were against the National Bank of the United States and the Protective Tariff. Democrats supported the Mexican War. Also they believed anyone/everyone could hold office.
The Whigs were the opposite. The Whigs were supporting the National Bank of the United States and they supported the Protective Tariff. Whigs believed in national harmony of society and also the value of the community.

I would probably join the Whigs because they had great men. They were for everything and supported most things. Also because if you're a Whig you wouldn't be in much trouble a lot.

  8. The Democrats believed in states rights. They were against the national bank as well. The Whigs believed in the national bank and more for federal rights. I think I'd go for the Whigs since it did say they were to later identify as republicans. I believe that the national bank was something they needed and the de cleats wanted to completely take it down. The federal rights applied for the states so they didn't need independent states rights. Then it would just cause more arguments because things would seem "unfair". I think I'd have to go with the Whigs. Although they were very different they both had tons of supporters. (110)

  9. The Whigs and Democrats were the two parties of significance in this era. In summary, the democrats supported states rights, but the Whigs supported a strong federal government. In terms of commercializing, the democrats favored small agricultural farmers, and the Whigs favored large-scale industrialization. The Whig party were in favor of tariffs, however, the Democrats strongly opposed it. The Democrats also opposed a national bank. If the parties were like this presently, I would most likely be siding with the Whigs. A strong, central source of power is essential to good leadership, and large scale industrialization often leads to greater technological advances.

  10. This weeks blog is about the Whigs and Democrats. What did they believe, and what side would I join?

    1. Both parties branched from the original political party, "Democratic Republicans." Even though they both originated from the same party, they are very different. The first difference was that the Democratic Party's first major leader was Andrew Jackson, and the which party was created in opposition of Jackson. This meant that the two parties were "enemies" from the start. Jackson didn't want the national bank, and the Whigs did. Democrats believed that the individual person could run office and be glorified, and the Whigs believed that the congress should have the most power.

If I had the choice, I would become a Democrat. Although I do not agree with all of the Democratic ideas, I would prefer them to the ideas of the Whigs. The Whigs didn't support the Mexican war, and that would mean that Mexico could be a threat to us. We would have a lot more of border issues.

  11. 1. In the 1800s, there were two main parties, the democrats and the Whigs. Personally, I probably would have agreed more with the old Democratic values, but not so much anymore.
The democrats were more like the old Democratic Republicans, in the way that they valued the common man, and thought that anyone could hold office, given the opportunity; they were located more in the southern U.S. The Whigs were kind of more like the Federalists, and were mostly in the northern, New England states.

    1. The main thing that held the Whigs together was a hatred for Andrew Jackson. This, in my opinion, made the party weak. (108 words)

  12. Democrats-
The democrats were found in 1828, by Andrew Jackson. They believed anyone could hold office and they supported the Mexican war, and states rights. They adorned the individual. They strongly disliked the federal government and their involvement. They thought the common citizen would be people, like farmers. Democrats hated protective tariffs and the national bank, Andrew Jackson. They also liked rapid territorial and external growth.

    Whigs-
The Whigs originated in 1833-1856. This groups was made by the opposition of Jackson. Some of the people that were Whigs were, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, William Henry Harrison, and Zachary Taylor. They believed the government should be dominated by the congress and the federal ideas. They supported protective tariffs and national banks. They believed in the harmony of society and the value of community. The Whigs were mostly industrialist and naturalist. The Whigs loved gradual territorial growth and internal improvements . They later branched off into becoming known as the Reoublican party.
    I would choose the democrats.

  13. The democrates believed in state's rights and also they believed in the ability of the common man becoming a government official with growth of land and a small portion of economics. The Whigs believed in a strong federal government and they also believed in growth of land and economics they really liked the idea of a very strong congress and also believed that factories and business is the way to go. I don't think that I would be either but I guess that if I had to make a choice of the two then I would probably be a democrates because I would be living in a small farm community like the south since I am living in the south and back then it would have sounded better to be hearing about being able to be apart if the government and not have to be extremely rich or super smart and prodominlty live in the north since congress for a while had been made up of mostly Whigs so most Whigs for the most part lived in the north and would be more likely to possible forget about the small scale farmers in the south, but I would not want to own slaves so I would probably end up as a small scale farmer and also my mom's side of the family where farmers and my Grande father still owns cows.(Word count 231)

  14. The Democratic Party believed in the states right and did not really care what the federal government had to say about what they did. They basically did what the wanted too. They also believed that anyone should be in office and that it was the people's right to decide who was in office. They supported the Mexican war.
The Whigs were a party to oppose Andrew Jackson. They wanted Andrew Jackson out of office. They wanted a stronger federal government directed by congress. They wanted the national bank.
I think I would want to be in the Democrat party because then I could have a voice in what happens in the government.

They also liked the growth and expansion of their land. However, they hated several things. They hated the federal government, the national bank, and like farmers and other southerners, the hated high tariffs.

Whigs- The Whigs really "sprung up" between 1833-1856. They were created and occupied by people who opposed Jackson. They believed strongly that congress should rule the government. Unlike the democrats, they supported tariffs and the national bank. They liked their expansion to be gradual over time, not sudden. They also loved peace and harmony between states.

The Whigs believed they should have a strong federal government they favored large industrial businesses, while the democrates favored smaller agricultural farmers and things like that. Being from the south I would probably side with or be a democrat because we should keep expanding and a regular should be president of any government official. Also I would think that farmers are just as important as large scale factory businesses.

  17. Democrats-Democrats favored states rights and didn't like government involvement in social or economic affairs.Like their first president, they were against the national bank. They favored the individual and rapid territorial growth.Despite having left the Democratic Republican, they still believed that those who were making a living off their land were ideal citizen.

Whig-At first, the party found their similarities in their collective opposition to Jackson. They wanted a stronger government but they wanted Congress to head it.They strongly valued community.Whigs related more to the north because they were industrialists. They believed in slow and steady growth in territory.

I would probably side more with the democrats as they were more for the individual persons rights rather then having large government and blanket decisions.(127 words)

  19. 1. The Democratic Party basically supported state's rights. They didn't like the federal government and the decisions that they made. They believed everyone could hold office. They supported wars that would help them. The Whigs wanted a stronger federal government. They wanted the Congress to dominate the federal government. They actually supported the national bank when the democratic party was against it. The Whigs were industrialist and nationalist. They were alright with growing their territory gradually.
    2. I feel like I would have been with the Democratic Party. I believe that the states should have rights to do what they need to for their states. The government shouldn't be able to put the same laws on different states. States are different so there shouldn't be decisions made in the government for the different states.

  24. Democrats was start in 1828 and we still have this party today. Andrew Jackson was the leader when it first began. The democrats did not like the federal government involvement with the social and economic affairs. They were against the tariffs and the national bank with Jackson. They also believed that everyone could hold office. They also believe that the ideal citizens were farmers. The Whig party was presented from 1833 to 1856. Then it broke up into little groups. Some of our presidents was important to this party like William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor. The Whigs favored a stronger federal government and more international improvements. They were more common in the north than in any other part of the country. They created the national banks and the tariffs.

If I were to choose a party it would be Democrats because they are for the people. The Whigs would've been a good party, but they are more for rich people and themselves. The reason why I chose the Democrats is because they actually lasted longer that the Whigs. They make great arguments for the people, and they aren't just for themselves.

I had to choose between these two parties I would probably choose the Whig party because for one they led to the republicans and my family is republican. For two if you think about it they had the better thoughts about how to run the government. Especially considering that it was because of the democratically hate for the national bank that led to the panic of 1837.
