Great Depression: Causes & Facts

I'm going to let you do some independent research for this blog.

"The Great Depression" is one of the most famous eras in American History, but as with most things, it is more complicated than at first glance.

For this week's blog, research "The Great Depression" and answer the following four questions (50 words each).

1) What exactly does the 1929 "stock market crash" mean?

2) What role did banks play in the Great Depression?

3) What types of people did not suffer during the Great Depression?

4) Do a Google Image Search on "The Great Depression" and describe the photo/image that makes the greatest impact on you.

  1. 1. The stock market crash of 1929 was a downturn in equity prices that happened over a two-week period beginning in mid-October. This event marked to end of the "Roaring Twenties." They named the day each porting crashed as Black, Thursday, Black Monday, etc. the stock Market continued to fall almost 90% from its peak in 1929. (57)
    2. In the 20's every town had a bank or two that was struggling to take in deposits and loan out money. But as the depression worsened banks began to fail very quickly. So many banks b ban to fail one by one in the 30's a total of 9,000 banks failed. So many banks had closed or placed restrictions the president decided to give them a "bank holiday" to cool off. (69)
    3. The Great Depression impacted so many Americans, but seemed to avoid most of the rich people of our country. Al though everyone was touched by this crisis in some way the rich almost see,Ed to be oblivious to the suffering of others. They say up to 40% of the population was impacted. (52)
    4. The picture that stood out the most to me on the Google search was one that shows a mother on the porch of a home with three kids sitting on the steps. The sad part is that there is a sign that says " 4 children for sale! Inquire within." This just breaks my heart that things got so bad for people they felt like they had to resort to selling their own kids. (67)

  3. 1. Stock Market Crash of 1929 was a powerful market crash. It started in October of 1929 after the Roaring Twenties economic “bubble boom” finally popped. After World War I, the so-called “Roaring Twenties” economic and cultural boom was fueled by industrialization and the popularization of new technologies such as radio and the automobile. Also, air fight became common. (59)

    2. In the 1920’s almost every bank had problems. When the Great Depression hit, almost all banks failed. It was a very big situation. Every bank began going down hill very quickly. In the 1930’s, almost 9,000 banks failed and had to close. The failed banks were primarily small, rural banks, and people in metropolitan areas were generally unconcerned. (60)

    3. The Great Depression was an awful event who affected more poor people than rich in the United States. Everyone was hurt by this crisis, rich people had more of a solid ground to stand on. Blacks and whites were both greatly impacted by this event. It was very sad. (50)

    4. One of the photos I saw that greatly hit me hard was a picture of many people standing outside of food kitchens. There were a lot of people. Many of them looked tired, small and hungry. The atmosphere looked very unclean and unsafe. Its really sad to see people going through rough times and not even having the money to be able to eat. (66)

  4. 1.) The 1929 Stock Market Crash was a sudden dramatic decline of stock prices. It was the worst decline in history of the United States.. The crash of 1929 was spread out over a two-week period that began in mid-October. The stock market eventually fell almost 90% from its peak in 1929. (52)
2.) Banks played a huge role in the Great Depression. There was many people that withdrew their deposits in cash. This forced the banks to pay off their loans and often lead the banks to fail. During this time, New York's Bank of the US collapsed. The bank had more than $200 million in deposits and made it the largest single bank failure in American history. (66)
3.) Many people suffered from the Great Depression, but some actually didn’t. The only people who were not badly affected by it were the rich people. They did not invest all of their money in the whole of the stock market, and the people who didn’t were the ones that did okay. (52)
4.) The image that had the greatest impact on me is a picture of a mother with her 4 children. There is a sign that says, “4 children for sale. Inquire within.” I would imagine it was very hard for the mother to put out that sign because she could not take care of her own children. (57)

  5. The 1929 stock market crash means that during the great depression it was the start of it because of mainly production declined, unemployment, less people wanting to buy which lead to an overload of unsold products, low wages, the proliferation of debt, a struggling agricultural sector and excess of large bank loans that could not be liquidated.words57

  6. After the crash during the first 10 months of 1930, 744 banks failed- 10 times as many. In all, 9,000 banks failed during the decade of the 30s. It’s estimated than 4,000 banks failed during the one year of 1933 alone. By 1933, depositors saw $140 billion disappear through bank failures.words51

  7. In October of 1929, the stock market crashed. Leading up to the crash, stock prices were at an all-time high in August 0f 1929, but the stock market was unstable. When stock prices began to decline in September, shareholders began to panic. Millions of shares were traded leading to an extreme drop in stock prices. So when the stock market crashed, it means that prices dropped very low and very rapidly, leaving the economy hurting.

Banks played a huge role in the Great Depression. After the stock market crash, many people made “bank runs,” or withdrawing deposits from the bank. Most banks couldn’t afford these withdrawals so they went out of business. Thousands of banks failed during the Great Depression, and one could argue it was the main cause of the Great Depression.

The Great Depression strongly affected the country as a whole. But many people were not really affected by it in America. Up to forty percent of people felt no impact of the Great Depression. These people were mostly made up of the rich, because their wealth kept them going easily through the Depression. Another group barely affected were the poor, because they really had nothing to lose.

An image of a car during the Great Depression with a sign on that reads, “$100 will buy this car. Must have cash. Lost all on the stock market.” This obviously isn’t a real picture from the time, but it gives a good example. It shows how the crash affected the modern person so much that someone needed to sell his car for 100 dollars to get by.

  8. The Stock Market crash of 1929 is a four day collapse of stock prices that began on October 24, 1929. This marked the worst decline in US history. Companies lost more money than World War One actually cost. The crash started on "Black Thursday", but its fall of complete decline was "Black Tuesday", the following Tuesday.

During the 20s, the start of the Great Depression, an average of 70 banks failed each year. After the first ten months of the 30s, 744 banks failed. And an estimated 9,000 banks failed in the 30s. Some argue that the bank failures caused the depression, but others think economic issues caused the banks to collapse. But most old agree that the banks played a significant role in the Great Depression.

Nearly everyone suffered a great deal from the Great Depression, but farmers didn't suffer as bad as everyone else. The farmers were already in a pretty poor state. To most farmers this time period did not make things any different. But the farmers did struggle when crop prices dropped, and they could not make income to eat their mortgage. many farmers were either evicted from their home, or fought off the Scheriff with pitchforks and guns.

I google searched The Great Depression, and I found a picture that has a sign on a front porch saying "4 children for sale." This grabbed my attention as soon as I saw it because it shows how desperate and how little people had. Either the mother needed money to feed herself, or hopefully, wanted the children to go to someone who could feed them. The Great Depression was a really hard tie for people, and it is hard t comprehend just how bad it was sometimes.

This image of the great depression shows one of the many things made it worse the dust bowl and in this image a dust storm blew here and it was a pretty bad one at that for bury a car with dust and a couple other things including the barn.words50

  11. The 1929 stock market crash is more then just people losing there stocks. This means that companies are falling and due to this the owners have to fire people. And when people lose there job it is hard on the family’s. So the stock market crashing effected more then just the stock holders. (56)

When the banks failed it was impossible to get money out of the bank and not many people had debit or credit cards so they were left with the money they had on them. And for most people that wasn’t a lot, they would keep there money in a safe place so they wouldn’t get robbed and they knew nothing could happen to it until now. (60)

The types of people who didn’t suffer during the grate depression was the farmers. They were generally not wealthy, so they didn’t know any better they just went along with how things were before. They could still support them self’s and there families on the farm they had food and water. (52)

The picture that stood out to me the most was the one were the mother and her daughter were sitting on a porch. It was just so real looking it opens my eyes to what people were actually going through in this time period. And how bad it really was and how blessed we are today.(50)

  12. 1. The stock market crash of 1929 meant that prices would drop and shares in the stock market would be lost and people who could not have their shares in the stock market went broke. That is when poverty took place with people such as farmers. It also meant that people could not get their loans out of banks because most of the banks went out of business. (Word count:67)
    2. Banks played a huge role during the Great Depression. People had to get their money out of the bank somehow and their loans. They couldn't do it if the banks went out of business. Over 600 banks had closed after the stock market crash had occurred. Banks lost lots of money because people could not get their shares from the stock market and people could not pay their loans as well. (Word count:62)
    3. Many people had suffered during the Great Depression. For example: farmers lost a lot of money and crops because people could not afford to buy them and farmers had to sell their land. The people that I think didn't suffer were probably the wealthy people because they knew that they had "backup money." They wanted to make sure that people didn't try to steal from them. (Word count:64)
    4. The picture that I looked at is based on poverty. I would describe the picture as people having to deal with poverty and not able to get a job that pays good money. Also, I would describe the picture as people begging for food and lined up to try to get food. (Word count:53)

  13. 1. The 1920 stock market crash only hurt about %2 of Americans. The rich people were the only people that had the money to buy stock. The rich people were hit hard by the crash and the market plummeted crushing some businesses and political parties with their funding. (50)
    2. When the banks collapsed it crushed more of the average American. People began to mass withdraw and take out all of their savings in fear that the banks would run out of money and close with their money still in them. At one point 28 of our states did not have a bank at all. This impacted the depression because people’s money was stuck in the banks after they had closed leaving them broke. People were also not able to get loans in order to buy houses and cars. (76)
    3. Although everyone was effected in some way big or small some were affected less than others. The rich were the ones that kind of lucked out of the Great Depression. The only thing that hurt them is the stock market crashing and that only had to do with the people that had stock and that was very few. (58)
    4. The pictures that really stuck out to me was the ones that showed the living conditions of the people that were affected by the Great Depression. He houses were very over crowded and dirty. Some of the houses looked like they were designed for 3 people and they had at least 15 in them. (54)

  14. 1. The stock market crash of 1929 ment a lot of different things to many Americans, but none of which was a positive. Most all Americans viewed the crash as a devastation and an end, an end to the life that they were living and familiar with. They knew that America was about to change drastically, and they were scared because they did not know what to plan for or what to do to support their families.

    (word count: 76)

    2. The banks played a big role in the stock market crash of 1929. They did not necessarily help aid people during this financial crisis, but instead put more stress on them. When the banks began to go out of business the people that had money saved in them lost it all. This just made it worse for families that were already struggling.

    (word count: 62)

    3. The people that did not suffer from the stock market crash was the wealthy Americans, on being the president at the time. The people that were rich and did not have all of their money invested in the stock market and put in banks were not really affected by it. Also, the farmers of the time were not affected by the stock market crash because they did not have money invested in the stock market and they were already in great poverty.

    (word count: 82)

    4. The picture that had the greatest impact on me was of what i think was a mother and her children. The mother was covering her face while her three girls and one boy sat on the front porch steps together, barely clothed. To the right of the picture was a sign that said “ 4 children for sale.”

  15. The 1929 stock market crash meant a lot to people especially banks and to the people. With the banks investing money in the stock market and the crash happen banks lost a huge amount of money from it and people trying to withdraw their money from these banks and they don’t have the money in the bank they crashed.(59)

The banks had a huge roll with the Great Depression as people couldn’t get there money’s from the banks and when they shut down they lost all the money they had in them. With banks shutting down like crazy people couldn’t get loans people couldn’t pay they’re property off and people lost they’re retirement funds when their bank shut down. (60)

Many people suffered from the Great Depression but they’re were very little few that didn’t suffer 1 group of peoples who didn’t suffer was the homeless from before the Great Depression as they were already poor can’t get worse than that but the other great that didn’t suffer were the farmer because they already knew how to grow crops so they had they’re own food and they could make little amount of money from the crops left over to pay for the land. (83)

The images of the Great Depression are horrible one image I saw was a for sale sign that said 4 children for sale and the mom over them and 2 of the children holding each other ad the other two sad that horrible to sell children. Another photo was he knows 3 trades knows 3 languages served for 3 years has 3 children unemployed for 3 months and wants a job and that’s sad that he knew all that had all those children and had no job. (87)

  16. 1. The definition of the crash of the stock market in 1929: an enormous decrease in stock on the stock exchanges of Wall street in October of 1929, the crash began the Great Depression. With the crash people and banks were loosing stocks aka money which led to unemployment, and a whole lot of other bad things. (57)

    2. What role did banks play in the Great Depression? They were phase w of Satan plan. Crash stock market, which forces the banks to be the bad guy to the rest of America. By either not letting you withdraw your money from them, or be the guy or gal that says you’ve lost all your stock and now since this is effecting the banks the banks get to take your money to help themselves. So either way I’m the American people’s minds the banks were evil. (78)

    3. The Great Depression killed so many people financially, but guess who it did it affect much???? Oh yeah, the rich people. They obviously did get hit with the damage that most people did because they could fall aback easily because they were so rich. They either reclined on their some want depleated stock, or fell back on the raising of taxes to help their companies. (65)

    4. I looks down at a lot of Great Depression pictures, poverty and hopelessness is what I see a lot.
Ike in businesses the employees working double time for cheaper, and them them not bing able to provide for their families suck. Also the child labor is grueling to think about, but then it was worse because the companies themselves were not getting what they usually get which made working for children even worse. (72)

  17. On December 29, 1929 tons of people traded in their shares in many companies. About 16 million shares were traded and this cause many investors to be lost and many companies to crumble. Although only 2% of Americans owned stock, this was very horrible because of how many companies it hurt, causing employees and consumers to also be hurt by it. (Words:60)
Many people got scared because of the stock market crash and ran to banks to withdraw their money fearing that soon banks would close and they would loose their money. Many bank runs took place and tons of banks began to close because they had no money. This hurt everyone who had money in those banks because the banks loaned more money than they kept at the bank. (Words:68)
The only people who were “not affected” during the great depression would be the very wealthy people. They had enough money to sustain themselves during the depression. Another group of people that were “not affected” during the great depression were farmers. They already lived a pretty poor life, and had their own food to survive from. But when the dust bowl hit all the farmers land, crop, and livestock were destroyed. (Words:71)
The photo that makes the greatest impact on me is a photo of a little boy poorly dressed and holding a sign that says “please give my dad a job”. It is so sad that all these people had to go through this, but especially the children. Im sure many children were starving and cold and sleepless during this horrible period of history. (Words:61)

  18. The stock market crash of 1929 meant financial trouble for the nation and crippled the American Economy. On October 24, 1929, people panicked and sold over 13 million shares of stock. It caused investors to lose over $5 billion. It marked the end of the “Roaring Twenties”, however, it occurred over a two week period, not just the one day. It marked the beginning of the “Great Depression.”(68)

Banks panicked in the 1930s. When the crisis began, 8000 banks belonged to the federal reserve but close to 16,000 did not. The non-member banks reverted to earlier practices which helped cause the crisis. One known cause was the practice of counting checks, which were counted as reserves in two seperate banks. This practice gave made less cash available. Another problem was they were unable to function during crisis.(82)

Not everyone suffered during the Great Depression. Most wealthy upper class people felt no impact at all. They also had no care or concern about the suffering of others. However, it depended on why they were wealthy. If they were a banker, they did fine. If they owed a company, they slowly watched it decline and die.(58)

A photo that made a great impact on me, was a photo of a mother with four children and a sign that says,” Four children for sale”. It is very sad to think that these times were so difficult, that they were not able to take care of their children.(50)

  19. Consumer spending slowed and goods began to pile up. In turn, factories began to slow down. Nervous investors began selling their stock. 12.9 million shares were traded that day. This was Black Thursday. On Black Tuesday, another 16 million shares were traded that day. Millions of shares ended up useless. The stock market couldn’t handle it and it collapsed.(59)
Banks played a major role in the Great Depression. Everyone placed their trust in banks. But as the crisis began to form, investors started to lose faith in their banks and demanded deposits in cash, forcing the banks to liquidate their loans. They gave out money they didn’t have which forced them to lose.(54)
The types of people who did not suffer during the Great Depression were the ones that did not invest in banks, and people who were already poor. Only about 2 percent of people invested in the stock market so that other 98 percent were not affected by it.(51)
The picture that affected me the most was one of a family living in a Hoover Hotel. It was a family of five and and it seemed to be all girls. All of their belongings were in a suitcase, and the adults were grimacing and the kids were smiling. Its sad to know that this was commonplace throughout the US.(60)

  20. 1) The stock market crash of 1929 ruined America's economy. One day in October, October 24th to be exact, marked a day of panic in the financial part of America. People went into hysteria and sold more than 13,000,000 shares of their stocks. This was the event that jump started the Great Depression. (52)
    2) After the stock market crash of 1929, people began flooding into banks in mass hysteria in order to withdraw all their money out of fear for what had just happened with the stocks. This was a big problem, because after checks began more popular, banks did not carry as much money as they have before. (56)
    3) During the Great Depression, only 40% of people in America suffered from it. While mostly everyone was effected in some way, shape, or form by this era, it was mainly the wealthy that was not as effected as persay, farmers or company owners. The upper class that remained untouched also ignored what was going on and didn't help those suffering at all. (61)
    4) The picture that I saw that had made the biggest impact on me was one of a woman and her children. The picture was of the mother and her four children sitting down and the woman was holding up a sign that read "four children for sale." This photo made the biggest impact on me, because it's very sad to think that women were so poor and so helpless in the Great Depression, that they decided to result to selling their own children in order to try to survive. 21. 1. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 was in late October when investors traded 16 million dollar shares on the new York Stock exchange in one day. This wiped out thousands of investors and the industrialized world took a step into the great Depression. This was the deepest and longest economic downturn in the history of the western industry. (58)

    2. As banks panic from the withdrawing of money from anxious people, this led to financial disaster. This result lead to 9,000 banks closing and 140 billion dollars disappeared through bank failures. This is what lead families to poverty.

    3. During the Great Depression, many men and women were stripped from their jobs but the rich people got to keep their belongings. As the common people went into poverty, the rich got to stay on there property which gave them a firmer stand than most. As awful as it sounds, some rich men and women went into poverty losing everything. (60)

    4. The pictures overall meaning is about little boys and girls that are holding signs about the confusion of why their parents don’t have jobs. The picture is in black and white which makes the image more depressing. These kids are all sad like they know what is going on and they know that their in financial trouble. (57)

  22. 1) Right after the roaring twenties an unforgettable event happened known as the "Great Crash." This was a market crash of the New York Stock Exchange when investors traded 16 million shares into the market in a single day. This led to an economic down spiral and eventually turned into the Great Depression which went from 1928-1939.(56)

    2) After the market crash many people panicked and rushed to several banks across the country to withdraw their money. Due to the massive influx of withdraws in these banks many of them ran out of money and didn't have any income of money so they were forced to close these banks. This dark time was known as, "The American Banking Crisis."(61)

    3) Most American citizens were affected by the Great Depression some more than others though. The individuals that weren't affected as much were the rich and the poor. The rich weren't really affected because they had plenty of money to "coast" through it, and the poor had close to nothing so they were used to it.(55)

    4) There are many images of the Great Depression and many of them are very emotional and dark. Such as one of a lady on her porch and she seems to be crying due to her 4 children who are on the steps of the porch with a sign next to them that reads, "4 Children For Sale." This just shows how desperate people got during this time and how they are willing to do anything for money.(77)

  23. The Stock market crashed in October of 1929. The New York Stock Exchange crashed when investors traded 16 million shares in 24 hours. This was the beginning of what we know as the "Great Depression". The "Great Depression" crippled America's economy and it was one of the darkest times in American History. Financially, everything collapsed on itself and it turned into a huge mess right after America went through what we know as the "Roaring Twenties." (76)

    2) Right after the crash, everybody freaked out all over America. So then, millions of people rushed their banks to withdraw their money. Banks do not work if they have no money in their system. So, of course the banks collapsed because they ran out of money. So all of a sudden, the banks collapsed because they had no money. (60)

    3) The great depression affected all of America. There is no doubt about that. The Great Depression really hit the middle class hard because that is like 95% of the American Economy. People used credit and were able to pay for stuff before the great depression and all of a sudden, they could not pay for their stuff. The people who were not affected were the people who were already rich, and the people who were all ready poor. What is the difference if you are already poor? Now, during the Great Depression, everybody else is poor. The rich were not affected as much because they had savings. They had money ready to go for emergencies.
    (116)

    4) I looked at a picture of some young men and teenage boys standing on a street. They had signs that made remarks about starving and working. They wanted work. It's not like they were just sitting around doing nothing. I am sure that there were some people who sat around doing nothing. People wanted to work to feed their families. (61)

  24. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 was the biggest stock market crash in American History. This stock market crash costed Americans billions of dollars. A stock market crash was when the share prices drastically fall usually in a short period of time. This crash would help lead us into the Great Depression.
    Words:52

During the Great Depression banks struggled to stay open. Banks were running out of money because many people were trying to sell their stocks and get their money. There was almost no one who was actually putting money into the banks. The large number of banks closing made it hard on people because they were unable to get money from the banks they also couldn’t get loans

Not everyone struggles during the Great Depression. Those who speculated in the stock market suffered the worse. Also those who couldn’t get Miami out of the bank struggled. Farmers didn’t really struggle because of the Great Depression, because they were already doing bad because of the excess amounts of crops being grown.

  25. The stock market crash started in the roaring twenties when people were buying on credit. The United States did not even think of the out coming of these proceedings that were going on. In October 1929 the stock market sold 16 million dollars in shares. This day was known as Black Tuesday.
When the stock market crash it did not really affect people that much, it mostly affected the people that owned stock. That was only about 2% minutes of the population owned stock. When the banks started to close that when the people started to struggle. Their were 4 big bank closing thur the depression. The first big one happened in fall 1930. People started to buy on credit for they took all their money out of the banks. The other happen in the fall of 1931, fall of 1932 and the early 1933. The government had to give out loans to many people to help the families out.
The people that did really suffer was the farms. Their struggle before the market crash. The top soil were fading away for years of planting. Just took up the good stuff in the soil. So their farms were doing really they had to buy more land that did not work. The picture that took the most impact on me was that of children hold signs out side that way their dad is out of job. The little children ask way they wont heir their dad.(245)

  26. On October 29, 1929, also known as black the stock market fell. This happened when stocks when appraised for well more then they were worth. On this the prices started to plummet. Even thought only about 2% of Americans owned stock this was a big event because this triggered a mass economic down fall for America. 56

In the 1930s the banks were not a safe place for your money. They practice unsafe methods by loaning out more money then they should which left then with very little money in their reserve. And when the people who took out loans could not pay the banks back the people's money that bank used was just simply not their. So you had people running to the banks trying to take what they had in the bank out. 78
In these pictures you see sadness and dirtiness. And people that all they own is what is on their backs. And they are just struggling to get by off of the little they have
