World War One: Two Perspectives

We are doing another blog on World War One this week because one week was not enough!

Last week you chose specialized articles relating to interesting subtopics of this war.

This week I want you to get the bigger picture.

You are going to watch two crash course episodes this week. One from "US History" and one from "World History".

For the comment sections, write a 100 word summary for EACH video. Be sure to write about both perspectives of this war-the American side (US History video) and the "world side" (World History video).

Crash Course World History Video-World War One

Crash Course US History Video-World War One

Note-Some information in both videos may be the same, considering the overall topic is the same. But...there should be a different focus from each video. Certainly enough to write two separate summaries.

World War 1 didn’t have as huge an impact on America as it did many other countries, but it still had a significant one. Only involved in the war for 19 months, the U.S. didn’t do a lot of fighting. Because of the large amount of immigrants in America, many Americans took sides besides the war. Also the war made the government much more powerful for a time being. The government used propaganda to influence the public towards the war. The Espionage Act and the Sedition Act made it basically impossible to criticize the government. The Great War also led a Great Migration; many African Americans moved north throughout the time period.

World War 1 was supposed to be the world to end all wars. It started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Austria soon declared war on Serbia, leading Germany to declare war on Russia and France. Britain and Belgium declared war on Germany also. Throughout the war people from many countries including Australia and India fought in the war. Trench warfare was a brutal type of battle introduced in The Great War. This lead too many deaths. In France, 13.3 percent of the male population between the ages of 15 and 49 died. As usual, disease took many more lives than the actual fighting.

World War 1 changed our outlook. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated that’s when the war actually started. Germany soon declared war on France and Russia. Trench Warfare was soon introduced in the war. It was a very brutal thing. The trenches were wet and smelly. Many middle- aged men died because of the Trench Warfare. It was a very sad and heart-felt tragedy. To be exact 13.3% of the male population died.

Most people think of World War 1 as a tragedy. World War 1 didn’t play a huge role in America, but it did In other countries. World War 1 was a writer’s war. Over 10 Million people died. The war only lasted 19 months. There were a lot of immigrants in America at that time. The government became very powerful because of the war. Many Africans Americans moved through the north because of the Great Migration.

  4. World War 1 started after the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 by Gavrilo Princip. Because of this act of terrorism Austria issue an ultimatum to Serbia which accepted some but not all of Austria’s demands and that cause Austria to declare war with Serbia. Russia got involved in this war because due to their alliance with Serbia. Then Germany because of their alliance with Austria they tried to stop Russia from getting involved but failed so Germany got involved by declaring war on Russia and made alliance with the Ottomans and then declare war on France for no real reason only because it was on Germany’s war plans which Belgium was on their plan and Britain is friends with Belgium so they started war on Germany then Japan declare war with Germany because they had an alliance with Britain so they started fighting them eventually the war ended by the Treaty of Versailles but fixed the blame on the Germany which ruin their economy and to its political institutions which lead them to start world war 2. 5. American’s involvement in World War 1 started not because of the sinking of the Lusitania but there were lots things that were related to Germany and a debt with Britain is the real reason why the USA declares war on Germany. America’s primary contribution to the Entente powers winning the war was economic as we sent all sorts of arms and money “over there.” USA troops didn’t arrive until the spring of 1918 and eventually over 1 million American doughboys served under General John J. Pershing. Eventually the Espionage act of 1917 prohibited spying interfering the draft and “false statements” slowed military success.words103

  6. 1.) World History
World War I, also known as the Great War, was very destructive. It was the war to change all wars. War was perceived to be necessary and glorious before World War I. Many people believed that the war grew out of imperialism and was fueled by capitalist rivalries. The war was started by an act of terrorism. Over 15 million were killed and 20 million wounded in this war. Disease killed many of those people. Many civilians also died. Influenza killed more than 3 times as many people than the war itself. The British lost 60,000 men in the first day of fighting. Germany was blamed for the war. The two most devastating technologies were American: machine guns and barbed wire. The war was very deadly because of new technology and outdated tactics. (133)

    2.) US History
Americans were only involved in the war for 19 months. The war still had profound effects on America. Originally, the US wanted to remain neutral. Many people believed the US entered WWI because of the sinking of the Lusitania. Part of the reason that they entered the war was that they wanted to help Britain, whom they loaned 2 billion dollars to. The government used its power to shape the public’s opinions to get people to support the war. The Sedition Act made it a crime to criticize the war or the government. 5,000 radicals and labor organizers were arrested. It provided new opportunities for women and African Americans. (109)

World War One wasn’t the war to end all wars. It wasn’t even the most destructive war. But It was the war to change all wars. World War One was started by the assassination in Sarajevo of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914, by a Bosnian Serb nationalist named Gavrilo Princip. Austria declared war on Serbia, and Russia declared war on Austria. Germany then declared war on Russia. Germany also declared war on France. A big part in the war is Germany’s Schlieffen Plan, which required that it invade France through Belgium. Then Britain declared war on Germany. The war killed over 15 million people, and wounded over 20 million.

    Crash Course US History
America was only involved in the war for 19 months. When the war broke out, America remained neutral. In Wilson’s 1916 presidential campaign, his slogan was “He kept us out of war.” That was only true until he got re-elected. The US joined the war for many reasons. One was the sinking of the Lusitania by German submarines. Another reason was the Zimmermann Telegram, which promised Mexico California if they helped Germany in the war. The Sedition Act, passed in 1918, which criminalized statements that were intended to cast contempt, scorn or disrepute on our form of government, or that advocated interference with the war effort. The Espionage Act of 1917 prohibited spying, interfering with the draft and "false statements that might impede military success". Wilson wanted to join the League of Nations, but the US didn’t.

  8. The first world war was the cause to World War 2. Americans blamed other countries for World War 1. We thought after the war that it separated us from the others that were different from us or that lived in a different country. Other countries lost a lot more from the war than the U.S. did. The British and German armies suffered a lot of deaths from trench warfare. Both troops suffered mentally aswell, and the conditions that they had to live in were atrocious. The German economy was destroyed after the war because the blame was placed on them so they had a ton of war debts to pay off.

    (word count: 112)

Americans sided with the British. Americans wanted to isolate themselves from the rest of the world during the war, so we remained neutral for as long as possible. Many Americans thoughts that the war was pointless. In the 19 months that we were involved in the war we did not do much fighting. One presidential candidate actually won a second term because his slogan was the president that kept us out of the war. I believe that the Germans attacked one of our ships because they were trying to make a point that we agree not over them, but they are in equal power with us.

  9. United States History
The war did not hit us as hard financially or physically like it hit the other countries like France, Russia, Germany, and China. The war did play a huge role in our countries development of industry, technology, and new ways to kill people. Also we tried to stay neutral and not fight because we had so so many immigrants, and the Great Migration. Which was a ton of African Americans coming into the North to better and start new life for themselves. Woodrow Wilson, our President, kept us out for nineteen. months which was a long time, but the tipping point came from 2 areas. One, the Zimmerman Telegramm. Where we couldn’t get any war news so we had to ask Britain for them. The other is when the French ship, the Lusitania, got shot down by German U boats. Then we entered the war and ended the war soon after. (155)

    World History
World War One was also called The Great War because this war changed the way other wars were fought and won. It was very destructive. From the new German U boats to airplcraft warfare, tanks, and even poison gas used by the German’s. It all started when a Archduke Frank Ferdinand was assassanated by a Bosnian Serb punk nationalist Garvrilo Princp in June 28 of 1914. Then it was on! Austria dec.ared war on Serbia. Russia declared war on Germany, and everyone else declared war on everyone else. Over 15 million people died and 20 million people were injured. The fought in a type of warefare called Trench Warfare. Where literally they would dig a 3 meter deep by 1 meter wide ditch and rarely come up to snipe people. Of course many diseases broke out. It was a grueling way to fight. (130)

  10. World War 1, also knows as the Great War, began as a because of the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 by the assassin Gavrillo Princip. After that Austria declared war on Serbia for not meeting all of their demands. After that Germany took alliances with Austria and their goal was stop Russia from getting involved in the war. World War 1 was also known as the Great Migration since everyone in the fighting countries did not want their towns to be hurt. Mllions of people migrated from their homes in search of safety. (100)
World War 1 did not affect the United States as much as everyone else in the world being that they were neutral in the war for 19 months. The United States got a lot of the immigrant immigration from the countries that were fighting in the war. The United States got involved after the Lustinia was sunk by the Germans war between the United States and Germany was declared. America sent a lot of money to the other countries in the Triple Entante. After the war was over the other parties had to pay back the states but never really did entirely. (102)

  11. World War One for the world change many nations that really lead into World War One. The whole world was involved in this war,, the United States did not join the it until later the rest of the world was involved. On the British side was that of New Zealand, India,Africa, Australia, and Canada. When the men went home they had great knowledge of the world. During the world Russia had a Revelation over the ruler family and made a new pact with German to get out of the war. German economy after the war was really bad. What mostly had the death toll so high was that diseases. Many countries after the war were in great did despair.(118)
When United States joined the War it has been going on 3 years.the United States joined the for many year that of the German new warfare, the Zimmerman Telegram, and that of the Fall of the Tsunami regime. We also had loaned the British 2 Billion dollars. Some people in the United States stated the War is healthy for nations. The government did not think that way they were making the States ready for the war by getting control of the coal industry and agriculture, we made the citizens cut there coal usage in their homes. This really helped when did our army over to help out the British. After the war we had made our impact on the world by that of our great army and how much money we gave in the world.(135)

  12. World:
World war one was caused by the assassination of archduke Francis Ferdinand which then eventually caused war between Austria and Serbia. Soon after many other allies of these countries got involved. Germany joined the war on the side of Austria and Russia joined on Serbias side. Soon the war became a world war. World War 1 changed the way the world thought of war. War was no longer glorified like it was before. So many millions of people from all countries died in the war. The war introduced new technology but also also used very old and dangerous tactics. Many diseases were the cause of many peoples death during the war. (112 words)

    US:
The US entered the war for several reasons. On reason was the Zimmerman letter, another was because of unrestricted submarine warfare. Wilson was president during the war and his entire campaign was that he would keep the US out of war... but he got us into one... ironic. The US government gained a lot of power during the war, maybe too much. They forced many men to join the war involuntarily and they passed laws on speaking out against the war which totally violates our freedom of speech. America also became huge on the idea of Anglo-Saxonism, aka America is the biggest and the greatest country ever. This also led to the persecution and discrimination of many immigrants. When the war was finally coming to an end America was a large influence at the treaty of Versallies. The war made America a big world power and influence. (149 words)

  13. World War I was also known as the Great War. it was a horrible time. It was the war of all war. Many people believed the war happened bc of imperialism and hate for our enemies. The war was started by the terrorist over 20 million people were killed and 15 million injured. Many civilians also died. The disease Influenza killed more than 3 times as many people than the war itself. The British lost 60,000 men the first day which was unheard of, Germany was the reason for the casualties and the war. The two most advancements discovered due to the was was, machine guns and barbed wire. This was was the most deadly of its time and new fighting tactics were made due to it.(125)

I think if we wouldn't have stayed neutral as long as we did we would still be in devstation, it was a smart call by Wilson to stay.(150)

  14. World war 1 changed all war. August 4 all European powers were a at war with each other. In the war one of the most brutal places were the Western Front as it was made up of 400 miles of trenches and with the zig zags it was actually made up of 25,000 miles. Britain as trenches were like home as England was only 70 miles from its trenches they could get there papers that day get supplies easy. The trenches for the British were stinky and wet from ass the dead people and it being wet as they were in the wettest part of the trenches. Rum kept a lot of the British fighting as it helped clear the mind of all the dead and people they killed. The treaty verisde need the war.(135)

Ww1 was called the war to end all wars until world war 2 came and then it was called world was 1 the United staes was in the war for only 19 months and when wa sin the war barely saw any battle. One of the reasons us went to was was 1 the Lusitania was sucked which had 124 Americans who died and weapons and supplies were on boarded. Another reason was the Zimmerman letter to Mexico for is they joined and won give Mexico they’re land back. The US joined April 7 1917. During world war 1 the national government became strong as one thing they did was have the draft before they had 150,000 men and after the draft they had 5,000,000. During they war the giver net had people called the 4 minute men go around make a 4 minute speech and he’ll the war effort.

  15. World War 1 was known as the Great War. It all started with the assasination of arch duke Francis Ferdinand. He was the Archduke of Austria. Things got hairy and Austria declared war on Serbia. Germany took sides with Austria and Russia took sides with Serbia. This fueled the war. So now countries took sides left and right so the war got bigger. Machine guns were made for the war and it completely changed the playing field. Also, barbed wire was used in trenches. Germany did not want Russia to get involved in the war. But, Russia eventually got involved in the war. World War 1 was also known as the great war. It was called The Great War because it was the biggest war we had ever experienced in the modern world. (133)

America stayed out of the war for a while. We tried to stay neutral. We eventually gave into the war. We had reasons for joining the war. There were a few big reasons. One of the reasons is that Germany sent Mexico what we know as the Zimmerman Telegram. Basically, Germany offered Mexico a proposition. They told Mexico that if Mexico would help them in the war, they would help us. This made the U.S. angry so we joined the war. Another reason we joined the war was because German Subs sunk the boat sailing over the Atlantic called the Lusitania. The boats were hauling British and Americans and the german submarines sunk it. World War One was known as "The Great War." It changed our outlook, in other words it normalized citizen is more and irony. But everyone can agree tha this war did not need to happen. Some poeple blame the cause of this war on the Web of Alliance across the World. Others clai it as a war between Germany's Radical Modernissm vs Britain's Traditional Conservatism. Some leaders across the globe climed war defined who was them and who was us. And sadly and ignorantly, war was perceived as necessary and glorious. This is absolutely crazy to me, but they didn't know ht horrible affect of war until after World War One obviously. Acrossed the world disease took more soldiers lives than bullets or bombs. And during World War One America introduced "new technology." There most effective weapon being new was the machine gun. As well as The GReat War this war was also kno as the Writers War. This war proved war to be anything but glorious, and the poeple lost all priority of heroism. (163)
    US
The US tarted out the War as neutral, mostly due to the opinion of our President at the time, Woodrow Wilson. But when we did get involved we were only in the war for 19 months. And compared to many other participants of the war, we didn't do much fighting. we saw the war as horrible and pointless. But once we joined in we used evyone. Wwe had t propose the war, and send as many troops as possible. Even though a lot of US troops never saw combat, we still sent a lot to strike intimidation in numbers. this war made the government more powerful than ever before. And a law was passed in this time that. Citizens could not criticize the war r the government. After he War students were also taught the war led the passage of the 19th amendment. Overall US didn't want to join the war, but when we did we were "All In."(160)

world war one all started when Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assasinated. although the US didnt join immediatly, we came into the war later. the main reason the United states joined was because the Zimmerman letter was intercepted, angering the United states and basically forcing us into the war. Woodrow wilson knew that unrestricted submarine warfare without the US in the war would screw us over and cause tons of trade problems, so against his own desire, we entered the war. the war also gave the Goverment a ton of power to force people into the draft and to silence groups speaking against the US in the war, causing discrimination on peoples opinions and then even racial discrimination because of who we were at war with. 126 words

    world
World war one, also known as the war to end all wars and the Great war, was a new era of warfare. unrestricted and savage ways were used in war to win and to gain ground on enemies. after the assasination of Francis Ferdinand, all hell broke loose. U boats with unrestricted and unforeseen attacks came, tanks were introduced and forced trench warfare to happen. these trenches were nasty and created tons of diseases and casualties. also, germans started using poison gas even to kill people. gas masks were created too, but ddint prevent many of the deaths from the gas. the war cost 15 million lives and millions more injured and dissabled. 113 words

  18. World war 1 did not have that big of an influence as it did other countries. In world War 1 the U.S did not fight that much. We were only in the war for around 19 months.  There were also may immigrants in America during the war so that also affected how much we fought in the war.  On the other side of things trench warfare was a big part in other countries. The reason we were in world War 1 was due to the assassination of the Austrian Archduke. This assassination pulled us into war since Austria declared war on Serbia. We had to help our allies in the war. In ww1 over 15 million were killed and 20 million were wounded(123)

People believed that there wasn't going to be another war and that ww1 was the war to end all wars. The United states tried to stay out of the war. Ww1 changed how people perceived war and changed their knowledge of war since it affected the whole world. Different countries invented machine guns, and poison gas to maximize the killing efficiency. Thousands of soldiers from all countries were killed per day. This war was by far the most destructive and bloodiest war ever. This was not the final war though. There were many after this all over the world which many countries didn't see coming(105)

  19. WWI may have been the war to end all wars, but it was also the beginning of many military and civilian technologies. It also didn’t have that big of an influence and also not even needing to happen. Th U.S. didn’t even fight as long as most did which they only fought around a year and a half., but when we joined we proposed the war and sent a huge amount of troops. The only thing that came out of the war was the advancements of the machine gun and barbed wire. Another cause of death would be diseases such as influenza which killed 3 times more men than the actual war. (110)

World War 1 was supposedly suppose to be “the end of all wars,” but it all started after the assasination of Archduke Fran’s Ferdinand in 1914 by Gavrili Princip. This cause Russia to declare war on Austria and Austria to declare war on Serbia, Germany then declared war on Russia and France. The war changed the knowledge and inventions that would cause better efficiency in killings. The Waldo gave the government the power to force men into the draft and also to shut the people up who gave their minds about the government. WWI was the biggest war we had ever experienced in the modern world. (106)

  20. World History

Many things happened when World War 1 happened. Germany was fighting along with Russia and Austria Hungary was fighting along with France. The war lasted for about four years. The countries were beginning to fight in what people call trenches which spread about 25,000 miles along with the empty land called no mans land. The war had also introduced tanks and gas bombs. France lost a lot of soldiers in just one day. After the war, Germany had to be punished since they lost and pay for the war. Russia was trying to stay in the war and that is what lead to the October Revolution which was of course in October. It ended in 1922. Then we find out that the Ottoman Empire fell and became known as what we call today Turkey. (Word count: 131 words.)

    US History
We started to begin entering the war. We were only in the war for about 19 months. We had fought with the British because we could mostly trust them since they were one of our Allies. We fought but didn't lose a lot of men. After the war was over in 1918, it was estimated that the war had cost about 10 million soldier's lives. Of course many people found out that the war was pointless. Meanwhile, different people wanted to stop the war and change different things which ended up bringing the Sedition Act.
The war was pointless and many people such as president Wilson had things that he wanted to change. He wrote his document called the "Fourteen Points." (Word count: 120 words.)
