The "Korean war" was a war where the northern communist govt. and the southern non communist govt. were fighting over who should control the whole country. the US supports the south, but it doesn't encourage a military. the north is supported by Russia and later on china who encourage a strong military. the armistice in 1953 that they signed just stopped fighting, but they still hated each other. the war is still technically going on. so i think the war gets skipped over in history because the war is still going on. they never stopped fighting and are still disagreeing to this day. 103 words

  2. 1. Truman had a little trouble controlling General MacArthur during the Korean War.
    2. It looked like North Korea was on the verge of victory, but the United States built their forces.
    3. The Korean War was essentially a back and forth between the Communists and Americans.
    4. It seemed like MacArthur wanted to pick a fight with China.
    5. MacArthur wanted to use nuclear weapons against China.
    6. Truman finally dismisses MacArthur during the Korean War.
    7. Negotiations took over two years.
    8. An armistice was finally signed on July 23, 1953 between the two parties.
    9. Both sides thought the end of war was imminent.
    10. There was 1.5-3 million civilian deaths with 40,000 American soldiers dead.

I think the Korean Conflict was a “forgotten” war because it happened not too long after World War II ended. Many Americans were probably surprised and not prepared for another war. The Korean Conflict is kind of overshadowed by World War II. I also think it was forgotten because the war was in Korea and America was just there to help South Korea. It may also be forgotten because the conflict was ended by an armistice so it was not like we had really won the war. We just agreed to stop the fighting. It is a shame that so many people ignore the Korean Conflict because it is what stopped North Korea from taking over all of Korea. (119)

    10. American had military forces in Japan.
In my opinion the Korean War was “forgotten” is because Americans just didn’t think about it. When the war first broke out, people worried that American involvement would usher in the same type of rationing and full mobilization that had characterized the Second World War. It failed to happen and within a few months most Americans turned back to their own lives, ignoring the conflict raging half a world away. Newspapers continued to report on the war, but with the entrance of the Chinese in late fall 1950 and the resulting stalemate in late 1951, few Americans wanted to read or think about Korea. I also think it was forgotten because we really didn’t win the war, so it wasn’t a big deal. The Korean war is very important, and Americans need to understand the importance of this history. (139)

    7. Syngman Rhee was very ruthless when it came to the war.
    8. The Japanese tried to eradicate the Korean Language.
    9. Nuclear Weapons would have probably caused a whole other war between China and Possibly North Korea and the Soviet Union.
    10. One part of Korea was taken over 4 times.
I think that this was a "forgotten war" because many people did not see this war to be helpful at all except the fact to help South Korea with its small army. Also, this war is forgotten because many people thought that China was going to take over all of Korea which did not happen and that is why there was an armistice agreement to stop China from fighting against the United States. It also was forgotten because many people when the war first started thought that with U.S. involvement would possibly usher and rationize just like during World War 2. This should be remembered because it is part of our history and why we were fighting in the first place. (120 words)

  6. The Korean War was so easily forgotten was because it literally started after the end of world war 2 and its major impact on us all while we were enjoying the victory in defeat the Axis powers the USA , Uk, and SK were busy fighting NK, SU, and China. This war also techenelly still goes on today because it never truly ended even America freed SK, NK hates us would try nuke us or simply because of their leader but still this isn’t a true war. Also this war was basically the start of the cold war that silent war.words101

    10. The fighting forces face a stalemate at the 38th parallel and signed an armistice.
Although the Korean War was an intense and bloody war, it is often remembered as the “Forgotten War.” This is for a few reasons. Mainly though, because it happened so soon after World War 2 and had a significantly lesser impact on Americans than World War 2 did. Also, since the war technically never ended, it did not register the same way with American people as a war like the Civil War or World War would. Another reason was during the war, it was called by many different names, including many just seeing it as a political conflict somewhere else in the world.

  8. 1. The US control over the southern part of Korea.
    2. The USSR had control over the northern part of Korea .
    3. Both side agreed to an armistice and stopped at the 38th parallel.
    4. General MacArthur wanted to fight China.
    5. President Truman dismissed General MacArthur
    6. The Japanese tried to eradicate the Korean culture.
    7. It took two years for an armistice to happen.
    8. About a million civilians were killed
    9. 40,000 American soldiers died.
    10. An amphibious attack led to Americans gaining ground in Korea.
The Korean War is called the forgotten war, but should not be forgotten. It was very bloody, and did not have a dramatic effect on Americans. It never really ended, it just has an armistice. So maybe it is the longest war in history? It was so close after World War Two, that it was overshadowed by it. It wasn't really helpful to Americans and to many, it may seem like it was pointless. But this war was not pointless, however pointless it may seem. But Americans and civilians did die in this war, so it should not be forgotten. It was to stop the spread of Communism, which now looking back on because I am in the future, it worked. (121)

  9. 1. The Korean people were subjugated by the Japanese occupation. This led to forced labor and forced prostitution and they also tried to eradicate the Korean language.

    2. The North is now north Korea which is under the influence of the Soviets and everything below the 38th parallel becomes under the influence of the United States.

    3. The 38th parallel was not meant to become an actual partition of the country but it becomes apart of the country.

4.Kim Il Sung wants to unite Korea under his communist rule, and Syngman Rhee wants to unite Korea under his authoritarian rule.

    5. Mao Zedong is interested in spreading Communism and he doesn’t like the Americans in South Korea and he feels some type of allegiance to the communists in North Korea.

    6. In March 2013, North Korea declared the 1953 armistice that rendered the Korean War invalid.

    7. There were 6.8 million American men and women who served during the Korean War period, from June 27, 1950, to January 31, 1955. There were 54,200 American deaths during the period of hostilities (June 27, 1950-July 27, 1953). Of these, 33,700 were actual battle deaths.

    8. The U.S. dropped more bombs in Korea (635,000 tons, as well as 32,557 tons of napalm) than in the entire Pacific theater during WW II.

    9. Officially, the Korean War was never more than a “police action” because President Truman never asked Congress for a formal declaration of war.

    10. During the war, North Korea was supported by the Soviet Union (Russia) and the People’s Republic of China, both communist countries.

If the Korean Conflict is so important to the history of the U.S. Why is it a "forgotten" war?

The three-year conflict in Korea pitted communist and capitalist forces against each other, and set the stage for decades of tension among North Korea, South Korea and the United States. It also helped set the tone for Soviet-American rivalry during the Cold War. The Korean War began when North Korean troops pushed into South Korea on June 25, 1950, and it lasted until 1953. The United States proposed temporarily dividing the country along the 38th Parallel as a way to maintain its influence on the peninsula, which bordered Russia. But the divide lasted in part because of competing visions among Koreans for the country’s future. Korea has been called a “forgotten war” since at least October 1951 when U.S. News & World Report gave it that moniker. In reality, though, Americans did not so much forget the Korean War as never think about it at all. Americans turned back to their own lives, ignoring the conflict raging half a world away. Newspapers continued to report on the war, but with the entrance of the Chinese in late fall 1950 and the resulting stalemate in late 1951, few Americans wanted to read or think about Korea. (197)

    2. In 1945, the Korean peninsula was divided at the 38th parallel between the U.S. (south) and Soviet Russia (north).
    3. The soviets established Kim il Sung to lead northern Korea.
    4. The soviets helped build up the North Korean military.
    5. The U.S. and South Korean military were able to hold their ground at the Pusan Perimeter.
    6. General Douglas McCarthur is able to retake Seoul by cutting off North Korean supply lines.
    7. McCarthur ignored President Truman’s wishes and bombed around the Yalu River, meanwhile China was sneaking troops in and building an army.
    8. The Chinese were able to cross the Yalu River and take Seol.
    9. While the Chinese were spread thin, the U.S. and South Korean forces are able to regroup and take back Seol.
    10. After a long stalemate at the 38th parallel, they decided to negotiate the end of the war. These negotiations took two years.

Before the Korean war, WWII had just ended and the United States was currently in a cold war with russia. They were also in the state of practicing containment. All of this then joined in with the Korean War. With all that was going on it would have probably been hard for people to process. They were all probably ready to see their loved ones back at home. Many Americans were focused on the threat of nuclear war with Russia. Atomic weapons were still a new thing so many people were scared and confused. This is why I believe that the Korean War was a “forgotten war.” (107)

    10) UN soldiers were put underMacArther Control in South Korea.
The Korean War or “ the Forgotten War” happened right after World War 2. So when it starts the entire world was still in shock over the that war. I believe this was the main reason that it was forgotten. This war saw so much death in it. Just like any other war. The other reason that this become forgotten was that we did not declare war on North Korea we were just there to support South Korea. There was as well a lot of back and forth between the two militaries. One side would be winning then the other would come back and be winning this went on for years. So it was the same thing nothing changed. So the world was just sitting there watched And waiting to see who would win this war. (136)

    8. 1.5-3 million civilian deaths
    9. Horrific war
    10. Called the "forgotten war"

The Korean War, also known as the forgotten war, was a horrific and terribly bloody battle. This war is very important to our time history, or of course we would not be learning about it now. But why is it considered the "forgotten war" if it is so important? I think it is known as such because it was not one of our better battle perfeormances. Even though we seized Seoul, we ever defeated the North Korean army. There was simply just an armistice signed, rather than a peace treaty. This armistice does not mean North and South Korea are in a state of peace, but rather in a state of non fighting. And our leadership from General Douglas McCarthur was not the finest we've ever had. 2) USSR helped build up the military of North Korea and gave them a new leader.
    3) The 38th parallel was supposed to be just a meeting point of the two countries and hopefully both countries would get along.
    4) Mcarthur not only wanted to fight the Koreans, he also wanted to fight the Chinese.
    5) Each country fighting would end up getting spread out because of how each army would out flank the other one.
    6) The Korean war was known as the forgotten war.
    7) Technically, this war has never ended, North and South Korea just aren't fighting right now.
    8) Mao Zedong was on the side of communism and sent his army to sneak attack the Americans.
    9) The Japanese were horrible to the Korean people when they had rule of the land.
    10) Mcarthur was dismissed during the Korean war.

We all know that the Korean war was very important for the United States. But, the question is, why is the Korean War known as the forgotten war. I think that the reasons act this war was forgotten was because first off, we never really saw the direct results. The Korean war was mainly there to prevent the spread of communism because we know that it would ruin the great country that we live in today. Second, the war never really ended. Instead of the war having this crazy ending like world war 2 did with an atomic bomb going off on Japan and some American soldiers flying off into the distance, this war was more of a stalemate and just faded out of our focus and eventually our memories. Lastly, lots of us are not old enough to expierice or remember the Korean war and our parents are the same way. (152)

    9. Truman fires MacArthur for wanting to bomb Korea.
    10. They ended this with the 38th parallel.
The Korean War is called the Forgotten war. But it should not be it was harsh and severe caused many people there lives. It was an issue that almost brought us to a nuclear war. There was bloodshed which was awful. The war didn't officially end it was temporarily stopped. So this war could have drawn out something like another World War Three. It was not a minor issue that we need to ignore. I believe it is important for our history. We need stuff like this to give us better knowledge of the past so it won't be “forgotten”.(100)

    9) The war was thought to end quickly by both sides.
    10) 40,000 American soldiers died, along with 1.5-3 million civilians.

Personally, I think that we have forgotten this war mainly because we just are not reminded about it as often as we should be. When the war first started, many Americans thought that we would need as many supplies as we did for World War Two. This however was sought out to not be the case. When Americans found out that there was not as much of a need for supplies this time around, we just stopped caring as much and did not pay as close attention. Newspaper companies still reported about the war, but no one read them to keep up to date. (104)

    2) after WWII the soviets and US split Korea. The Soviet Union took the North and the US took the South.
    3) Korea split at the 38th parallel. Kim Il Sung ruled the North, and Syngman Rhee ruled the South.
    4) The Soviet Union built up the military in the North, the US didnt in the South.
    5) North Korea invaded the South easily on June 25, 1950.
    6) Douglas MCarthur comanded the US army in the Korean war.
    7) US landed troops in Seoul and interrupts North supply lines.
    8) China enters the war on the sode of the North. They crossed the Yalta River and captured Seoul.
    9) The US retook Seoul and soon MCarthur is dismissed from his position.
    10) negotiations took 2 years to end the war with and armistince.

The Korean war is a forgotten war because it is one we want to forget. A lot of American soldiers died and not a lot was accomplished. The general of that war was fired. There wasnt much about the war to remeber other than those that died fighting in it. We didnt fight very well in this war. We never defeated the North. Our only accomplishment was taking Seoul. This is why it is the forgotten war. No one could or wanted to remember much of it because there werent very many great achievements by the United States army. We should not forget all the people that died fighting in the forgotten war. (106)

    8) It took many years for the armistice to actually happen
    9) Japanese tried to eradicate the Korean language
    10) Truman controlled MacArthur and his army easily

I believe that the Korean war was very a very important and very bloody war. The Chinese had a surprise attack on America and many people were killed. I think that it was forgotten because of how impactful World War II was that this was not as remembered. There was also not much of an ending to the Korean war. I think that when someone brings up war the first things they are going to think is the cold war, World War I, and World War II. This is why I believe that this war is know as the “forgotten” war.(101)
