1950s: Major Events

We will be discussing the impact of decades from now until May. Each decade in the 20th century is known for its political, social and cultural impact.

For this week's blog, independently research the decade of the 1950s.

Choose ONE 1950s political event (presidential, law, Supreme Court case, Cold War related event, Space Race event, war etc.) and ONE 1950s cultural event (movies, music, sports, comic books, tv, radio, books, plays etc.) that interests you.

Write 100 words for each choice. Explain what you learned about the 1950s from the two topics you chose.

  1. The Space Race was a competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to see who would be the first to launch a satellite into space and eventually other people. The Soviets launched the world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, in October 1957. This was a huge win for the Soviet Union, but also a big loss for the United States. President Eisenhower and his administration had a lot of fear and anxiety because the Soviet Union had exceeded the technological accomplishments of the United States. The Soviet Union also launched Sputnik II which carried the first dog into space. They also had more successful runs after that until they eventually put the first man in space. The Soviet Union was always one step ahead of the United States. (130)

There was a drastic change in the music during the 1950’s. This is when rock ‘n’ roll originated and became very popular, especially among teenagers. Elvis Presley began his musical career in the 1950s and quickly became the leading figure of this rising musical genre. Elvis was able to incorporate different genres of music into his, which made him very unique. Many parents and adults did not like that kind of music and thought that Elvis’s music was inappropriate. They wanted to keep blacks and whites separate. Parents also thought that their teenager would become rebellious and were afraid they would become corrupt by listening to this kind of music. (110)

  2. 1. In the 1950s, the Korean War was going on. The Korean War began on June 25, 1950. There were 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army went across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south. This was the first action of the Cold War. American troops had entered on south Koreas half by July. By July 1953 the Korean War had finally come to a complete end. In all that had happened, 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives during the war. Today, the Korean peninsula is still divided. (109)
    2. In the 1950s, sports were a pretty popular thing. The two most popular sports were boxing and baseball. The success of baseball during this period was due in large part to the invention of television, which made it possible to enjoy viewing games from the comfort of home. Hockey, football and golf were not as favored but were growing in popularity, and college football was more popular than pro football at the time. Baseball superstars included Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle and Ernie Banks, and it was a successful decade for the New York Yankees. In boxing, Rocky Marciano remained undefeated between 1952 and 1956. Other boxers of the era were Sugar Ray Robinson, Archie Moore and Sandy Saddler. (119)

  3. Space race in the 1950’s
In 1957, the Soviet Union launched their first satellite into space. This was not good for America because there was a fear of having something that could be potentially be a weapon of the enemy in space. America began working on ways they could retaliate with the Soviet Union. They worked on different machinery that they could spend into space and spent the whole 1950’s time era to do so. In about 1955, Neil Armstrong begun his career as a pilot to test different flying mechanisms to help reach the goal of making it to space. Eventually he became the first one in space but this wasn’t until 1969.(116)
    1950’s Music
Music in the 1950’s made a major impact on their culture. There was a lot of segregation between whites and blacks during that time and they wouldn’t even associate with each other. Music is one factor that brought them together. This started when Elvis Presley began recording music that was not the traditional white music, in fact it was the opposite. He sang the kind of music black people sang. Because he was white, many white teenagers would listen to his music and because he sang black people’s music, many black teens would listen in as well. This caused parents to worry about their children due to the racism they believed in. (116)

  4. 1950 Political Event
The Space Race between the Unites states vs. the Soviet Union. This was a result of the nuclear weapons race, and since both sides had nuclear weapons they had to now compete for something better. Who can get to space first? Well on October 4, 1957, The soviets launched their satellite “Sputnik.” Yuri Gagarin was sent into space, and the first man to orbit the earth. Later though the United stars did send 3 men into space and also orbited the Earth in the Saturn V, big they were in the capsule called “apple.” So the soviets won the space race. (105)

    1950 Culture Event
A man by the name of Elvis Presley was put into this world on January 8, 1935, in Memphis, Tennessee. He would soon change the face of America’s music and dancing forever. He grew up with this love for black music amd he wanted to be able to song and make rhythms and beats the same way they did. So he would go to black churches and he could get better at it. Later on he becomes an American idol. The first American icon. He would wear black clothes and sing like a black man but he was white. This blew up the teens at the time. It made the white people go to black cnurches and wear black peoples clothes. He went on the Ed Sullivan show 3 times, and all 3 times more and more people would listen in or watch him on tv. Elvis did strike a fear into the parents of the 1950’s becaus it wast about what he was singing. It was about they way he dressed and the way he danced. He dance in a very provocative way for that time, and he made the parents scared that their kid should would become juvenile delinquents. Elvis didn’t try to be a mediator for black amd white people to becomes less segeragated but that’s what happened. At his shows black people amd white people completely forgot their racial disputes and segeragstion laws. They just wanted to listen to good music. (253)

  5. A lawsuit known as Brown vs the Board of Education started the tracks to derailing segregation in America. It started when plaintiff Oliver Brown filed the class-action suit against the Board of Education in Topeka, Kansas, for not allowing his black daughter to attend an all-white school. Brown claimed segregated schools were bad for black children and were in violation of the 14th amendment. After the Supreme Court ruled segregation in schools was in violation of the 14th amendment, it was pushed to lower courts. Many school systems across the country began to integrate blacks into white schools, but many southern states did not really act on it. However, Brown vs the Board of Education lead to segregation being abolished across the country.

Sports in the 1950’s were a big deal, like they are today. Baseball and boxing were by far the most popular sports, while football and golf were growing. In that era, college football was more popular than professional football. Athletes like Rocky Marciano and Floyd Patterson were known by everyone across the country. In 1950, The Cleveland Browns won the Super Bowl, while the Minneapolis Lakers won the NBA Championship behind George Mikan, and the Yankees won the World Series. Sports such as auto racing, horse racing, and ice hockey became more popular. Americans in the 1950’s had more time to enjoy things like sports after World War 2, and the sports industry boomed.

  6. Space was one major goals between America and Russia in their cold war starting with Russia launching Sputnik which means Traveler in Russian on R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile which was a surprise and not pleasant to America which they view as losing so much ground to Russia and some of were worry that Russia could nuke so they launched their own satellite the Explorer 1 in 1958 created by rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and on that same year President Eisenhower authorize the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or known as Nasa , a federal agency dedicated to space exploration. words103

  7. During the 1950s there were lots and lots of protests against the inequality and injustice on African Americans. They fighting to rid racial discrimination for centuries but now in 1950s the struggle against racism and segregation entered the mainstream of American life. An example the Brown vs board of Education case in 1954 at the Supreme Court declared that “separate educational facilities” for black children were “inherently unequal.” This ruling was first nail in Jim Crow’s coffin. Many Southern whites resisted the Brown ruling by removing their children from public schools to segregation academies and use violence and intimidation to prevent blacks from asserting their rights.words106

  8. 1. One Supreme Court case that really changed America was Brown vs. the Board of Education. The case took place in 1954 and began intirationing America. Before the court case African Americans were not allowed to go to school with white children because of their color, but after the court case all of those rules changed. The book the I am reading for my History project is a personal account of a African American girl, named Melba, integrating Central High School. Integration was not easy, and sometime even life threatening, but brave choices of these children gained equality for African Americans in America.

    (word Count: 102)

    2. One cultural event that intrigues me is integration through music; but, more specifically, integration through Elvis Presley’s music. Elvis was a white man with a African American man’s voice and style. The clothes that he performed in was from a African American clothing store and the music genre that he sand in was predominantly African American. Both of these things, back in his day, would have been frowned upon by the white culture. His music helped blend the white and African American teens together whenever they would attend his concerts, and his music also gave the two races something in common and something both races could bond over.

  9. 1. The political time period of the 1950s has a lot of conflict but also a lot of peace politically. One the of the movement in the 1950s was the civil rights movement. In the 1950s there are no longer slaves or extreme persecution of any race other than white but African Americans still had a lot of criticism. The 50s were a time where the economy was doing great there was disposable money that people could spend on whatever they wanted African Americans still had to use a separate bathroom though. Brown v. Board made a huge leap forward in the civil rights movement by desegregating public schools. Now black and white kids are in school together and if the kids will accept it they are the future therefore the future is peace. (134)
    2. The 1950s also had a lot of cultural advances. For example, the migration to subdivisions was a new concept. People no longer lived in the city. If a family was middle class or above they would most likely live in a suburb. In suburbs most of the houses looked the exact same and there were houses for miles and miles. This also showed the conformity of the time. Everyone wanted to be the same and look perfect just like the model family given to families of the time by media and television. The suburbs in a way brought families together also because they would have facility rooms in the house that most likely had a tv in it so the family would get together at night and watch the new or whatever was on. 10. Brown v. The Board of Education was a landmark case for African American rights. This case happened in 1954. In this case, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. This helped establish that “separate but equal” education was in fact, not equal. This happened when the plaintiff Oliver Brown filed a suit against the board of education in Topeka, Kansas. His daughter Melba was denied entrance to an all-white elementary school. The Supreme Court put Brown’s case along with four others under the name of Brown v. The Board of Education. The court ruled that the plaintiffs were being deprived of the equal protection that was in the 14th amendment.(116).
The Cold War was a war of words, espionage, and the growing threat of nuclear attacks from the communistic Soviet Russia and democratic capitalistic United States of America. Within this “war” was the “Space Race”. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, which is the Russian word for traveler. This showed the potential that Soviet Russia had with the R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile. It was capable of carrying a nuclear warhead into US airspace. Then in 1958, the US launched its first satellite, called the Explorer 1. That same year, President Eisenhower created NASA. Then America ultimately won the race with Apollo 11 and the first men on the moon. (112)

  11. 1950s political event:
the space race kicked off in the 1950s as the soviet union suprised the united states with a satelite that they launched into space named Sputnik 1. after nuclear warfare was developed this was the next power move to determine dominance in the world. Sputnik was launched on october 4, 1957 and put into orbit. Soon after Yuri Gagarin was the first man to ever go into space and orbit the earth, and he was from Russia as well. within a few years the united states got up to par with the russians and sent s space capsule called the Saturn V into space with 3 men and completed an orbit of the earth. 114 words

    1950s cultural event:
a huge boom in the sports industry came in the 1950s making them as popular as they are today. 2 primary sports, boxing and baseball were the biggest ones, but gold and football were also very popular, and College football was more popular that Pro football! in baseball, the yankees absolutely dominated the decade as did the Cleveland brown football team. Floyd PAtterson and Rocky Marciano were the Floyd Mayweather and Connor McGregor of boxing. hockey was even becoming popular in the states. Rocky went on an undefeated boxing run between 1952 and 1956, setting records for his time. 100 words

  12. I Learned that the Soviet Union beat us to the moon. I had always thought that armstrong was the fist person on the moon. turnes out he was the first american on the moon. The soviets also beat us by having the first sapce craft in orbit. Sputnic was its name, it may not be ther best thing ever put into space but it got the job done and had us paronoied. But after they beat us in the space race America had a fetish for anything space related, Tv shows, Cars, you name it had a space themed twist to it. (103)

In the 50's Boxing and baseball were the big sports of the time. Basketball and football and golf were still growing to become the sports they are today. Many people believe that the area of the 50'shad the best group of athletes come through due to there purer work ethic and there want to succeed. Many great boxers and baseball players have come from that time period and I wish I could've seen them play in person it would be amazing. It also was something that forced the races to come together. (100)

  13. The political event that I chose from the 1950s was the presidential election of 1952 between Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson. This affected America from the presidential side because the congress and the presidents had mostly been controlled by democrats since reconstruction. When Eisenhower was elected as president by a landslide, he was the first republican president since reconstruction. He and the republicans in congress made a change in America. What I learned from this was that Eisenhower and his buddy Richard Nixon tried to change some of Truman's laws or policies that he had. People had recently been against Truman and his decisions with the Korean War and the Cold War, so Truman ended up stepping down from running for the presidency even though he was getting destroyed by another candidate. A big cultural event would be the spreading of Rock N Roll music thanks to Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley started his career in the 1950s and began changing the way that music is today by mixing gospel and rock n roll and other types of music. He also changed the way music is because of his dancing even though some people or most people thought that it was very sexual and that if kids listened to this music then it could cause criminal problems. That was the biggest fear of most people which were parents. Then, when Elvis Appeared on the Ed Sullivan show things began to change with the way people thought about Elvis even though his future would drastically change. (117 words)

  14. In the 1950s music had a great impact on how teens acted, talked and dressed. A man named Elvis Presley came on the seen around 1956 sick and he almost gave parents everywhere a heart attack. When parents saw him perform they saw "extremely" sexual dance moves that were very provocative. And the second thing they saw was he dress and sounded like a black artist. So the parents tried to shield their children from it. But when you tell your kid no it makes them want to do it more. So you had these kids going behind their parents backs and buying Elvis records and records of similar artist. But Presley didn't just impact the music world he also inadvertently broke down racial barriers. This happened because both white and black kids wanted to go to his shows. So they came together and didn't even notice cause all they cared about was having a good time. (157)

Harry S. Truman was the President so the United States from 1945 to 1953. He took over when one of the most loved presidents ever Franklin D. Roosevelt died. He was thought to be dumb and to know nothing about the world because he was from the south. But he set out to prove them wrong. He was not the kind of president to beat around the bush and try to please everyone he did what he thought was right no matter who said it was not. He believed that the reconstruction was the right thing to do in helping relations with European countries. This plan gave Europe about $13 billion dollars.(112)

  15. The space Race began in October of 1957. A Soviet R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile launched Sputnik, the world's first artificial satellite and the first man-made object to be placed into the Earth's orbit. In 1958, the US launched their own satellite, Explorer 1. Dwight Eisenhower signed a public order creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA), a federal agency dedicated to space exploration. There were two national security-oriented space programs created from this. The first one was dedicated to exploiting the military potential of space, and the second one used orbiting satellites to gather intelligence on the Soviet Union and its allies. In 1959, the Soviet Union launched Luna 2, the first space probe to hit the moon.In April 1961, a Soviet Union cosmonaut,Yuri Gagarin, orbited the earth for the first time. About a month later, Alan Shepard became the American in space(not through orbit). The US “won” the space race by landing on the moon.(160)

Rock “n” roll mixed black musical genres, including Rhythm and blues, gospel, country western, and pop. Segregation was prominent during this time. It was not normal that a white music artist would be singing black music. Elvis Presley was one of those artists, who was the most successful artist of Rock”n” Roll. Presley brought about a social change. Adults saw Presley as a bad influence because he let loose and presented an animated sexuality while he performed. The 1950s was the first time teenagers were noticed because money could be made off of the. It was also a time when the term Juvenile delinquency was brought about. Teens wanted to get away from parents and they were able to do that even if it meant rebelling. There was a huge generation gap, so adults did not understand children. Teens set the tone of the home. Parents feared that if their child listened to this new genre of music, they would become “corrupt”.(164)

  16. The Cold War was a major dispute in US History. It is quite fascinating how the United States and the Soviet worked together as allies in World War II, but shortly after began this dispute known as the Cold War. Both countries had bad blood during World War II. The Untied Stats was always wary of the. Soviet's communism, and their leader, Joseph Stalin's,, tyrannical role. And the Soviets hated the United States because they felt like we did not legitimize them as a part of the global community. The overwhelming threat of nuclear bombing changed domestic life in America during this Cold War. People ere in contrast fear of a nuclear attack (111)

The music in the 1950s changed the cultural completely. In one instance yo could say the influence music had on the 1950s was positive, but you could also say it was negative. Rock n roll music came alive in the 1950s, and partly defines that time as we know it today. The music broke down all racial barriers between African American teens and white teens. These kids did not care about what their parents views about segregation were, this was partly because they were rebelling against their parents. But also because music unified them. No matter what race they were, they were going to enjoy music. But this could also been seen negatively for the parents because their teenager is gong off hanging with people the dont know, and dancing to music they think is turning their children into juvenile delinquents. 17. In the Brown vs board of education case Oliver Brown fought for his daughters right to go to an all white school. In 1952 the Supreme Court took on a bunch of segregation related cases and put them all under the name of "Brown vs Board of Education". The court came up with its verdict in 1954, unanimously deciding that segregated schools were not fair/equal, or constitutional. The 14th amendment was not being followed correctly, and the were deprived of equal protection. After segregation in schools was outlawed many people just continued segregation as if nothing had happened. Many Southern states didn't integrate their schools until they were forced to. (115)

"I Love Lucy" was a 1950s CBS television show. The main characters were Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, played by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Lucille and Desi were married in real life and they also played husband and wife in the TV series. In this show Lucy would give up the boringness of a housewife and try to do new and fun things like preform in shows. However Lucy's plans always turned out disastrously so she would have to go back to being a housewife until the next episode. Millions of Americans loved and watched this show. It shows how women were expected to just be housewives in the 1950s, and the idea of the 1950s that that is all women can do.

  18. 1.on October 1, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1.This was the beginning of the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States. In 1952, the International Council of Scientific Union established July 1, 1957, to December 31,1958 as International Geophysical year because the cycles of solar activity would be high. The Untied states quickly went to work to hire different government agencies to help to build the first satellite. The naval research laboratory’s ‘vanguard’ was chosen in September 1955. Unfortunately, The Soviet Union surprised the word when they unexpectedly launched Sputnik on October 4,1957, about the Size of a beach ball and weighing 183.9 pounds. It only took 98 minutes to orbit the earth (117)
In the early 1950’s, the pop charts were leaving the Big Bang era behind and R and B was soon taking over. Both black and whites teenagers gave full attention to this new era.1952, Billy Haley and his comets hit the pop charts first with their single,”crazy man crazy”. 19. 1) One big political event that happened in the 1950's was the Korean War, also known as "the Forgotten War." The Korean War began on June 15, 1950, kicking off the decade. This was the start of what would be known as the Cold War. The Cold War did not consist of any fighting, only tension and threats. The American army went to South Korea that July, and ended the Korean War within that same month. After the war, 5 million lives were lost, consisting of both civilians and soldiers. North Korea and South Korea are still divided to this day. (103)
    2) In the 1950's, the face of music and what was popular was dramatically changed. The person that made this change was none other than the legend, Elvis Presley. Elvis Presley broke the original social barrier put up by white families. Elvis Presley was a white man that sang like a black man, and sang their type of music. He also started dressing like them, and also dancing what people of that time described as "provocative' because of the way that he suggestively moved his hips. Elvis is now known as "the King of Rock'n'Roll." (100)

Supreme Court decided to hear a case about a little girl who lived with in walking distance of whites-only elementary school. Due to this segregation, she was forced to go to a school farther away. In 1954 the U. S. Supreme Court’s ruling of Brown v. The Board of Education prohibited schools from practicing segregation. The Civil Rights movement was propelled forward with the life changing events that took place in the 1950s and It brought forth amazing leaders including Martin Luther King Jr. (114)

Literature in the 1950s was more forward and brazen than ever before. Writers began to express feelings and talk about subjects that were normally considered taboo. Some of these became so extreme that they required censorship. While many were shocked and appalled by these writings, others believed that the authors just wanted attention. A lot of these works were products of the American “Beat” generation. They began to borrow themes and language from jazz and other types of music. This was used as inspiration for their provocative works. These books, poems, and other writings have maintained their widespread influence even in present times. (103)

This satellite caused panic in the US because we thought Russia may have space weapons. This event was also exciting just to see what we could advance scientifically in the US. (102)

    2) The next cultural event that happened during the 50's was music itself. Music had drastic changes in the 1950's. A new style of music came out called rock n roll. King and Elvis Presely. Elvis was the most popular though. Elvis was such a big controversy in this era due to the was he acted, dressed, danced, and sang. In 1947 a man named Charles Schulz started a cartoon feature called "Li'l Folks" for the St. Paul Pioneer press. They called it a complete flop and it never achieved success. A couple years later he compiled his comic strips, sold them to the United Features Syndicate who then changed the name to "Peanuts." Schulz said he did not like the name change and that it made his obviously significant comics seem insignificant. The first comic strip was printed on October 2, 1950. It was about Charlie Brown and was published in 7 different newspapers. By the end of the decade the "Peanuts" were so successful they had won Schulz a Reuben award.(113)

    Political:
The “space race” was a Cold War competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to develop "aerospace capabilities, including artificial satellites, unmanned space probes, and human spaceflight." In the year 1958 The National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( aka: NASA) was created. When the Soviets launched the world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, on October 1957, it set off almost like an alarm in the Eisenhower administration and caused intense fear and anxiety among the US public with thoughts that the Soviet Union had passed us up on our the technological achievements. The Americans were not far behind the soviets launching all of there space crafts, in May, Alan Shepard became the first American in space, piloting a 15-minute suborbital flight. (123)

  23. To start off with for my events of the 1950s I chose the Korean War. The Korean War started on June 15 of 1950. It was basically the war against communism. We had to fight china who recently won their independence and were no longer our allies. They fought along side the Korean people who were previously under the control of the Japanese government. The North Korean people put up a good fight against the USA. Basically this war was forgotten in history because it was in between world war 2 and Vietnam. There was not an action packed ending to the war because it was never ended. (108)

The next political event form the 1950s was the space race. The space race was basically America vs Russia in a race against time to get to space the American people were shocked to see that Russia won this race at first by launching sputnik into space. Sputnik was a satellite that we knew nothing about. The American population got obsessed with space and were making movies about space and aliens. They made comic books that were about space and aliens. They even made their cars look like that were from space. I just really think its funny how the space race made a path into everyones lives. From kids, to teenagers, even to adults and their cars that they thought looked cool. (114)

  25. During the 1950’s America and Russia were at odds to say the least. There was the constant threat of nuclear bombing. Americans may have seemed to be all perfect and happy but in reality many were scared for their lives. The H-bomb could go off at anytime so we even had drills in school to help people feel more prepared and at ease. During the Cold War there was an event called the Cuban Missile Crisis, this was when we found out that Russia had sent nuclear weapons to Cuba, which was extremely close to the US and gave us the impression they were going to use them on us. After researching this event I realized just how scary the Cold War really was and how close we were to a nuclear fallout.

One event that changed the course of history in the United States was when Elvis came on the scene. Many people liked him and many hated him and his music for a number of reasons. Elvis dressed and sang like a black man which many people found to be cool, unique, and very entertaining. However, many thought he was greatly going against the status quo of the time and they really did not like how they thought his music was turning their children in juvenile delinquents. His music was one thing but the thing that parents really hated was his dancing, his dancing was considered at the time to be very inappropriate and sexual. Elvis helped bring black and white pepper together and end segregation.

  26. In the 1950s, many political events took place but a major event would be the Korean War. One of the first major wars since the Second World War was the Korean War. It put the conflict between capitalism and communism into sharp relief by pitting the North and South halves of Korea against each other. The South Korean army had successfully defended their territory against the invading Northern forces, although the military engagement failed to produce peace. North Korea has since gone on to become a nuclear state, ringing bells in the corridors of the decision-makers of global peacekeeping. (101)

An important change was in how teenagers were viewed up until the 50’s. Teenagers were just children and were treated as such until the 50's and future decades changed and that was when teenagers became an important section of society. When politicians and others realized teenagers would very quickly become voters and consumers and a new generation of pop stars which included Elvis Presley, and was created as the main target. In my opinion, the 1950s sounded great. This would be the time period that I would choose to live in and without the 1950s we would lose a huge part of our generation. (106)
