Camelot Comes To D.C.: The Presidency of JFK

JFK took the nation by storm in the late 1950s and early 60s.

He was a brand new type of president. Handsome, young, wealthy and glamorous (both he and his wife), Kennedy was the "president of America's youth".

This website is a remarkable resource for his time as president. Take some time to look through the interactive timeline. Click the events that seem interesting to learn more about the key details of his administration.

  1. John F. Kennedy was elected as president. He knew that he would probably have a long road ahead of him. That is when things began to start changing. We entered the Space Race, We were involved with the Cuban Missile Crisis, and we had to deal with the Soviets and the Berlin Wall. Those were key things that happened during Kennedy's presidency before he was assasinated in November of 1963. Somehow we got out of the Cuban Missile Crisis and had a deal with the Cubans and the Soviets about not using or selling nuclear weapons on each other. And, we got a man on the moon during the Space Race. We also had to deal with the Soviets and the Berlin Wall. We got the Soviets to leave the territory and then we tore the Berlin Wall down which was a success. I also learned that John F. Kennedy wanted people to be equal. He had also appeared on a television show which was the first news conference. Kennedy also had the Bay of Pigs Invasion which was suppose to help protect the Cubans but turned out to be a huge failure in the end. Castro ended up forcing the American invaders to surrender which they did. (204 words)

  2. JFK had a lot of things happen during his presidency that was cut short. He was the first president to ever give his inauguration on live television, which was a big deal because they didn't just have youtube that they could go watch it on after it was over. they either had to be there live or wait till it came out the next day in the paper and they couldn't copy his speech word for word they had to summarize it. John F Kennedy also had the honor of the first man on the moon to be during his time in office. This was a big eat because it opened new doors for the USA it was like it cleared a mental block for our engineers. He is also the man we can thank for the improvements we have to our social security, which back then were not good at all. It wasn't until he came to office that they were even talked about being fixed. Also, some bad things happened during his time in office he had to test 2 nukes which is cool but also sad that we had to think about dropping it n another country. Also, he had to talk on tv about how each family should get a bomb shelter or what was known as a fall out shelter.(225)

  3. John F. Kennedy was a popular and outgoing man who made a good president. His wife was the same way. People liked him a lot which is why it is no surprise that so many people watched his presidential debates and his inauguration on TV. It was the first presidential inauguration live on TV and everyone was excited. I Have learned about the many key events happened during his presidency, such as sending a man to the moon, dealing with the soviets and the Berlin Wall, and the Cuban missile crisis. I also learned about his involvement in the Peace corpse, and the Bay of Pigs invasion. JFK had to deal with some difficult situations such as the Freedom riders facing a mob in Montgomery Alabama. And test the two nukes knowing we might have to use them in defense of our country if needed. Another good thing he did though was making social securities improvements for Americans such as giving more money to widows and retirees. He had quite a variety of good and bad situations during his presidency, but sadly it ended in his death. (200)

  4. John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States of America. Born to a wealthy and politically influential Massachusetts family , he graduated from Harvard and served in the Navy during World War II, earning the Navy and Marine Corps Medals and the Purple Heart. Following the war, he was elected to the United States Congress for three terms and to the United States Senate twice . He won election to the presidency in 1960, in one of the closest elections in American history. Kennedy's foreign policy record was similarly mixed. He gave the go-ahead to an invasion of Cuba by anti-Castro exiles planned by the CIA during the Eisenhower administration. The invasion prompted international criticism; its failure undermined American prestige and contributed to Moscow's resolve to place missiles in Cuba the following year. This, in turn, led to the Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy's greatest success as president. The president rejected military advice to attack the sites and imposed a quarantine on the island, blocking Soviet ships trying to reach Cuba. Kennedy's and America's prestige were boosted when the Soviets capitulated to American demands and agreed to dismantle their missile sites. Kennedy also increased American involvement in Vietnam. By 1963, he'd placed 16,000 military advisors in country. Historians differ as to whether he would have continued this policy in Vietnam and expanded America's military presence had he lived to serve out his full term. (236)

  5. John F Kennedy's presidency was very eventful and impactful. One of the main events in JFK's presidency was the Bay of Pig's Invasion. This invasion on Cuba was April 17-19, 1961. But the thing I did not know about it was that it was actually Eisenhower who came up with the plan, but JFK followed through with it. The plan was to silently invade Cuba, who was on the same side as the Soviets. But the Cubans saw the American ships nearing land, and Fidel Castro sends Pilots who sink two of the ships. JFK sends Americann pilots to join the fight, but they get shot down. And eventually we are unable to save our invaders so we have to surrender. JFK was the first president to be on live television answering questions. This stunned people because there was no editing involved, and he was being fired at question after question about the Cuba invasion and other things. It was a tough and brave thing for a new president to do. 168 I knew the space race was. A huge event of this time , but I did not know that JFK was so passionate about it. He gave $531 million to funding the space elploration, This money would go to rockets, fuels, and satellite. (209)

  6. In 1961, J. F. Kennedy was the first to be on television for inauguration. This event was televised all over America and everyone all around the United States were eagerly watching there television as each candidate was presenting their speeches. He wants to create peace corps for America. Kennedy presented his speech for the peace corps as well, and was also televised. During the Bay of Pigs, J. F. Kennedy persuaded to send American fighter pilots over to Cuba to help with the battle. In 1962, racism was still raging. People were getting rejected to schools solely because they were African America. The death penalty had finally been lifted. There was still death penalty but it was no longer required. Women also began to gain rights. A law passed which granted them equal pay as men. Sexism was a major problem in the 1950’s but was starting to be relieved in the 1960’s. Another law passed having to do with civil rights. J. F. Kennedy believed in civil rights and wanted to peruse a presidential career in it. Martin Luther King Jr. presented his speech during this time, “I Have a Dream” which fought for the rights of African Americans. (202)

  7. John F Kennedy was inaugurated into office on January 20,1961. One of the first thing he did as president was creating the Peace Corps. One of JFK’s biggest failures is the Bay of Pigs Invasion, where we lost many soldiers and when we sent planes to try and get them out they were unable to provide support and they were stuck there with no chance of winning. Another big part of his presidency was the Vienna Summit where JFK and Khrushchev met to discuss the future of the world and issues concerning Berlin. JFK also signed off on a bill that would improve social security and help give back more money to Americans. Kennedy made it a priority during his presidency to get America into the space race and catch up with the soviets who were ahead of us at the time. He also realized that as life was becoming easier and more efficient Americans were getting lazy and out of shape so he made posters and advertisements to try to encourage Americans to get healthier and work out. As we found out that the soviets had successfully created the H-Bomb JFK encouraged Americans to create bomb shelters in the case that America went into a nuclear fallout.

  8. John F. Kennedy was a popular, wealthy man born in Massachusetts. He became president in 1961. One of the first major events that happened after he became president was the Bay of Pigs Invasion. The invaders were Cuban refugees that were trained by the CIA. This plan was a complete disaster because the Cubans found out about their plan. It ended with the American pilots being killed and their identities were exposed. Even though this plan failed, Kennedy was still a great president. I learned that Kennedy wanted people to be treated equal, particularly people who are mentally disabled. He wanted there to be community centers and special education for them. Kennedy also wanted African Americans to be treated equal, which led to integration in Alabama. He said, “Every American ought to have the right to be treated as he would wish to be treated…” Another thing I learned about Kennedy is that he wanted to end world hunger. He tried to solve this problem by getting technology like tractors, fertilizers, and pesticides into the hands of farmers. In 1963, he got together with world leaders for the World Food Congress. Overall, Kennedy had accomplished many different things during his presidency. (201)

  9. Throughout the article, I learned quite a few things. John F. Kennedy, known as Jack, was sworn in as President of the United States of America in 1961. Also, we can see a major undertaking for President Kennedy. The Bay of Pigs invasion. This turned out to be a complete failure, and made tensions worse with the Soviet Union. John F. Kennedy also pushes forward with the United States space exploration programs. Also, war with the Soviet Union became closest to happening during Kennedy’s administration, especially with the Cuban Missile Crisis and the tense situation with the Berlin Wall. During this tense time, the Soviet Union tested multiple hydrogen bombs, which make the atomic bombs used in World War 2 look like firecrackers. John F. Kennedy encourages Americans to build fallout shelters for their families, as many see nuclear war is coming. Kennedy also sends troops to train those in South Vietnam, and orders the assassination of the Vietnamese leader. During Kennedy’s presidency we can see many social changes happening. Thurgood Marshall becomes a justice of the Supreme Court, the first African American to do so. After Kennedy’s assassination, his Vice President carries out his work in progress, a Civil Rights bill.

  10. From this website I learned that John F. Kennedy wanted to do great new things for America. Kennedy really wanted to change America. He had new ideas about civil rights, poverty, and the Cold War. Many organizations that Kennedy started and inspired still help American citizens today.
Kennedy was an all around a very likable person. It seemed that no matter what he did everyone loved him. He was good looking, friendly, and young, and people liked this about him. Even if Kennedy was apologizing for the huge mistake of the Bay of the Pigs everyone still loved and respected him.
Kennedy worked for a number of good causes during his presidency. He was constantly working on ending the Cold War. There was a lot of fear in the United States during this time and Kennedy tried many things to help calm the craziness of the war. Not everything he did worked or helped, but he did try. He also became passionate about the civil rights movement. He elected the first black supreme justice, Thurgood Marshall, to the judicial court. Kennedy was also passionate about the space race and getting a man to land on the moon. He inspired many scientists to reach that goal. Kennedy also gave us social security and all its benefits. This is one of his many programs that are still very helpful today. Overall, Kennedy was a very unique and likable president, who changed America in many great ways. (244)

  11. President John F. Kennedy was an amazing president that had a tragic ending to his presidency. He was only in office for 1,000 days and a man shot him while he was walking through the streets in Dallas Texas. But, in John F. Kennedy’s 1,000 days as president he made huge changes that helped make America the great and beautiful country that it is today. For starters, he helped change the way that African Americans were treated. One day he was watching tv and he saw a African American children’s march that turned violent because of how the firemen and policemen were mistreating the African American children. This troubled him, which helped start launch the Civil Rights. John F. Kennedy also wanted to help Americans lose weight and become healthier. Michelle Obama also fired to do the same thing by making public schools have healthier eating options. John F. Kennedy also targeted young American to make them have healthier eating habits, and he made a big influence on that age group because he himself was one of the youngest presidents. He influenced his generation and America through changing America’s eating habits and trying to start to change the rights for African Americans.

  12. John F. Kennedy was elected in 1961, but didn’t stay president long. He was assassinated in Texas. He served for 1,000 days, and those days changed America for the good. John grew up in a wealthy family in Massachusetts, but he wanted to end poverty so he waged war against it. President Kennedy designed and set up the Peace Corp. which was a big project with little things included that packed a big punch against the poverty, segeragation, and civil rights movement. Most of these little projects are still being used today. He was a lovable guy and he lit up any room we went into so it made people want to get behind anything he said. he also used the new broadcasting devise known as the television. He had things to say and things he saw over the tv for good and for bad. For bad, he had set up a group of Cuban exiled to attack fibel Castro’s organization with troops, but what seemed like a good idea back fired. All the men were lost and it was very embarrassing for president Kennedy and to America. He came in tv later and he took the responsibility for the failure and apologized for how poorly it went. Instead of him being critized and attacked he was being uplifted because no other president has taken the heat of a failure and the way he took it was genuine and humble. It made more people like him, he also saw what was going on in the South due to segeragation and he knew that had to be fixed. He also used the tv for good. His campaign was put on tv, had debates over tv, and was ejected abd imagination over the television. He was the manly and stylish icon in America. People chanted the way they dressed and they way they acted to act like the gentlemen the President John F. Kennedy was.

  13. John F. Kennedy had a very eventful presidency. His goal was to make America better in every way possible. Since he was the youngest president to be elected, he appealed to the youth of America. He promoted youth fitness. He had a vision of all Americans acting as one, also known as an alliance for progress. The alliance can defeat poverty and hunger, build and advance one another, and complete the revolution of the Americas. He called for peace and disarmament, beginning with a treaty ending the testing of nuclear weapons when the UN was left without a leader and the soviets were testing nuclear bombs. Kennedy also worked to fix the fact that employers would not hire female workers. Because of this, Eleanor Roosevelt became the leader of the President’s commission on the status of women. He highly enforced that America will no longer stand by as communism spreads around the globe. Kennedy made it clear that he wanted America on the moon. He also signed a public law 87-64, social security will now give more money to widows and retirees and workers can get reduced benefits if they retire early at 62. Overall he influenced America greatly and made several changes. (203)

  14. John F. Kennedy was branded as the president for the youth. Being handsome, young, and wealthy, Kennedy was sworn in as the youngest man in office. In many ways JFK was seen as a great president but there were some things I never knew about him. I didn’t know that JFK promoted for a “fit youth.” He got a new role for the President’s council for youth fitness. Another thing JFK did was look into hiring female employees throughout the world. He also had help with first lady Eleanor Roosevelt in promoting this. JFK had a huge role in helping “freedom riders” get out of busses in Montgomery. This led to more police control around the bus’s which made them feel a lot safer. Throughout Kennedy’s president he did a number of things such as the destination to the moon, The Bay of Pigs Invasion, helped with African American Justice and he had a part in the Berlin Wall and the Soviet H Bombs. There are many things I didn’t know about John F. Kennedy but I do know that he was a great president who made a lot happen in the years that he lived and without him there would be a lot missing from our generation. (209)

  15. john F. Kennedy's presidency was a short but jam packed one. his 1000 days or so in office had tons of changes. john f kennedy was one of the first few presidents to televise his debates which made him widely popular as everyone has acess to his debates. he even was the first president to be innaugurated on TV as well which got the entire country watching.one of the big things that happened early on was the Space race and sending man to the man, but also the huge cuban missle crisis in which Russia sent shipments of weapons to cuba and scared the US that we could be obliterated by a russian base 90 miles away from florida. JFK dealt with that wonderfully as he didnt listen to his advisors saying to drop bombs on them as that would have started a huge war, which we very easily couldve lost. another thing he dealt with was extreme racism and segregation problems in Schools and public, especially in Alabama and the KKK problems. MLK jr. was a huge figure who caught JFK's attention and brought a very much needed but very much delayed change to the segregated south. one scary thing he did was test 2 nuclear bombs knowing he would maybe have to use the mass weapons of destruction on another country. 223 words

  16. John F Kennedy was a mostly well liked president. He was a good looking man who had a beautiful wife and belonged to a prestigious American family. The guy basically had it all. He was a president who was able to reach the younger culture and that proved to be an advantage for him. He pushed for new things like televising his presidential debates and helping blend together black and white culture. Some people loved him for it, and obviously, some people hated him for it. President Kennedy also set up the Peace Corp that would help develop countries and that kind of thing. Another side of President Kennedy's term was having to deal with the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs invasion. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest that we have ever been to a nuclear war and President Kennedy had to tell America that we may all die. President Kennedy was also behind the assassination of the Vietnamese president and that caused change. President Kennedy was assassinated in Texas. This definitely shows how some people hated President Kennedy. I can not imagine having to see our president get assented on live TV. That is completely unimaginable and I hope that we will never have to see that kind of thing happen to us ever again. (220)

  17. John F. Kennedy presidency was very productive. He had the youth of the America. While Kennedy was in office he had the plan to put a man into space. Allen Shepherd was the man foe the job. Shepherd was piloting the Freedom 7 and was sent 116 miles above the earth. This really pushed up in the space race against the Soviets. Kennedy built up the space program so we can beat them to space. When shepherd finished in space the whole nation was scared for the return of his space ship. He told the nation and the Kennedy what he saw while in space.
While being the the president that was the most handsome, and the one that sent a man into space. He was the as well the first presidential news conference. The television was just getting big when he became president. So when he come on the air the people watch intensely as the president was on television speaking on what was going on in the nation and the Vietnam war. The people listening in could hear the press asking all kinds of questions. The press were asking on the treatment of the African Americans in the south. Some more questions about the new space Center in Texas. The plain he had for the rest of his presidency.(222)

  18. John F. Kennedy was one of the greatest presidents America ever had. One thing that came out of his presidency was the development of the space program. He was the won the president that launched Alan Shepard which got America into the Space Race. From launching him in 1961 led to more astronauts being launched into space. He was the president that took any chance he got to launch a an into space and he did it. When he launched Shepard it was going to change America into a brighter future for everyone in America so they won’t fall behind in advances.(102)

Another thing about the Space program. He was the one that had his mind set on landing in the moon. Sadly we he was killed he never was able to see Neil Armstrong land on it. But it was from his motivation that we were able successfully land and come back from the moon trip. Most of our journeys to the moon today are because of him. John F, Kennedy had his eye set on the moon from the time he was elected till he died. He was truly an amazing and smart man. He truly made the world better.(100)

  20. There are many interesting things I learned about John F. Kennedy. One is that he authorized the use of fallout shelters. A nuclear bomb releases radioactive material into the atmosphere, and it is dangerous to humans. Impending the threat of a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union, Kennedy wanted people to have fallout shelters. These are shelters that were built underground to protect from radioactive fallout. Another thing I found interesting was that Kennedy was the first president to appear in TV. There was no editing, and everything was live. Because JFK personified the American youth, he wanted to be a good role model for them. He saw that Americans were getting fat, and he believed they should were out more. A healthy president with a healthy America. JFK also change the workplace conditions. Him and Eleanor Roosevelt believed that women should be in the workplace. Perhaps one of JFK’s most spectacular speeches, was his declaration of America having the first man on the moon. It all started with 531 million dollars. Then JFK signed Public Law 87-64. This insured that widows and retirees would get more money. They would also get reduced benefits if they retire at 62.
His short term ended in his untimely death sadly.(208)

  21. The first time President John F. Kennedy saw with his own eyes he was watching Tv. And he was watching the hostility bye an angry mob who did not like the African Americans at all. A African American group called the freedom riders were on the greyhound bus as it pulled into the station. There they were met by the mob of angry white people. This was not the first time an angry mob met a freedom riders bus. There were two before that a crowd met and they firebombed the bus. Trying to inflict fear into the freedom riders. This is the very situation President Kennedy and his wife feared. They even tried to prevent it by asking the freedom riders not to ride those buses a month before. As they got off the bus the police had come prepared with dogs to attack those who were being "violent." They really only released the dogs on the black people. They also used powerful hoses to keep the protester at bay. And as all this is going on President Kennedy is watching this on his Tv set seeing this for the first time. In a way Tv played a big role in civil rights showing the rest of the country how they have been treated.(215)

  22. John F Kennedy was elected into office on January 20, 1961; he came from rich family in Massachusetts which is sometimes referred to by Kennedy as Camelot like from King Arthur he is the youngest president to be elected into office with an age of 43 he had several disabilities, he was honest like time he told his country that he fail those who were part of the bay of pigs invasion which earned him the nation’s trust he approve the idea to go to the moon he combated poverty he just barely stop a nuclear war during the missile crisis by keeping a cool head about these events but he did ask the nation to build some fallout shelter just in case he also order the death of South Vietnam’s president during the Vietnam war he believe the nation should work out more and allow woman to have jobs he was consider to be witty , an open door manger, intelligent, and charismata and most view him and his wife as movie stars and some people call him Jack he was murder during a speech was giving in Dallas Texas on November 22 1963 by a communist sympathies name Lee Harvey Oswald after visiting a new space center. words209
