  1. One political event in the 2000s was the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. On September 11, 2001, at 8:45 a.m. an airplane loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashed into the north tower. The impact left a burning hole on the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper. It instantly killed hundreds of people and trapped hundreds more in higher floors. It was the deadliest day in history for the firefighters in New York City, killing 343. Only six people in the towers survived at the time of the collapse. Almost 10,000 were treated for severe injuries. 2,996 people were killed in the attacks, including the 19 terrorist hijackers aboard the four airplanes. (119)

Facebook was founded in 2004 and became very popular. Mark Zuckerberg, a 19 year old Harvard sophomore, launched the site on February 4, 2004. It became an instant hit and is now one of the biggest web sites in the world. By 2010, over 400 million people visited Facebook every month. There was controversy that surrounded Facebook very quickly. A week after he launched the site, Mark was accused by 3 Harvard seniors of having stolen the idea from them. Even today, there is controversy with Facebook about personal data and privacy. Facebook is now worth an estimated $67 billion. (100)

  2. A major political event that happened during the 2000’s was 9/11. 9/11 was a series of terrorist attacks in New York. It was a suicide mission from the group al- Queda. They hijacked four airplanes and flew two of them into the twin towers knocking them both down killing many people. The third on crashed into the pentagon just outside of Washington D.C. and the fourth one landed in a field in Pennsylvania, the passengers had taken back over the plane from the Islamic terrorist and crashed it into the field. None of them survived but they stopped many other people from dying. (106)

A cultural event that happened was the creation of the iPod. Many movies and shows and new devices came out as well. The start of the famous ongoing series of Harry Potter started in the 2000’s still being a very popular series today. High school Musical was first presented in 2006, causing a whole generation to never forget these movies and love them. Another series that came out was Lord of the Rings movies. The smart invention of flip flops occurred during this time, still very popular today. Different genres of music were also becoming popular in the 2000.(100)

  3. 1) A big political event in the 2000’s was the 9/11 terrorist attack. On the morning of 11 September 2001, 19 hijackers took control of four commercial passenger jets flying out of airports on the east coast of the United States. Two of the aircraft were deliberately flown into the main two towers (the Twin Towers) of the World Trade Center in New York, with a third hitting the Pentagon in Virginia. The fourth plane never reached its intended target, crashing in Pennsylvania. It is believed that the passengers and crew overpowered the hijackers and took control of the plane. (101)
    2) The first self-balancing, electric-powered transportation machine invented by Dean Kamen, known as the Segway Human Transporter was invented in 2000. Launched in the year 2001, the Segway human transporter uses dynamic stabilization to enable the transporter to balance itself with the help of tilt sensors, gyroscopes and a built-in computer. The transporter adjusts to the body movement at a rate of 100 movements per second. The first model did not consist of any brakes and traveled at a speed of 12 miles per hour, and the speed and direction could be controlled by manual mechanisms. An improvised model released in 2006 allowed users to adjust the speed and direction through computer assistance too. (112)

  4. During the 2000s Eminem, who is perhaps best known for being one of the few successful white rappers in the music industry, enjoyed a massive commercial success and maintained commercial relevance by attempting to be controversial and subversive. According to Billboard, two of Eminem's albums are among the top five highest-selling albums of the 2000s. After the release of his album Relapse, Eminem became the best selling rapper of all time and the top selling artist of the decade across all genres. "Ringtone rap", which is rap music that was made popular for ringtones, which includes more "laid back" and "silly" elements along with repetitive hooks, became very popular in the later part of the 2000s. (116)

On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush.(100)

  5. The first Ipod was introduced in October of 2001 and released in November of the same year. It can be identified by its scroll wheel, surrounded by four buttons and a center button for selecting items. Even though it was not the first MP3 player, it was an apple product that was smaller and easier to use than most of its competitors. This resulted in strong and quick sales. The ITunes store did not exist at this point, so users had to add music from a CD onto the Ipod. At this point, Apple was not the powerhouse company it would soon become. (103)

After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, letters laced with anthrax began surfacing in the US mail. Five Americans were killed and 17 were sickened. This became the worst biological attack in US history. In 2008, Department of Justice and FBI officials announced a breakthrough in the case and released documents and information showing the charges that were going to be pressed against Dr. Bruce Ivins. The amerithrax task force was issued in 2010 as an investigative summary. This force consisted of roughly 25 to 30 full time investigators from several law enforcement agencies. New scientific methods were developed that ultimately led to the breakthrough in this case.(200)

  6. Cultural:
during the 2000s hurricane katrina smashed into the United States as a category 5 hurricane, destroying new orleans. the city was built to withstand a category 3 hurricane at its levees, but this hurricane and its 175mph winds blew through them and flooded the entire city. over 1800 people died from this catastrophic event, and it still has 700+ people that are claimed to be missing still. the storm surge that broke through the levees was a 20ft wave of water that plowed through the city. over 100 billion dollars worth of damage to Louisiana and Mississippi, making this the costliest hurricane of all time in the US. this event had a huge impact on the citizens of the US as they moved in to assist in clean up and rebuild. 132 words

    Political:
On september 11, 2001 19 members of Al Qaeda, a islamic extremist group from Iraq hijacked 4 US passenger planes and smashed them into the world trade center in New York City. they were suicide bombers. they took out the twin towers of the world trade center, part of the pentagon, and the 4th plane was taken back over the passangers and crashed in Pennsylvania. almost 3000 people died from this event, and that pushed bush to go after Al Qeada full force and find Osama bin Ladin, but at the time we blamed Saddam Hussain, who was the president of Iraq and almost as evil as osama Bin ladin. the boeing 757 planes they hijacked were planned for transcontinental flight, which were loaded with fuel and allowed them to blow up on impact. the buildings fell after 15 minutes of being hit with the jet. only 6 people in the building or near the building when they fell survived, while 10,000 people in the area of the buildings were treated for mostly severe injuries. 176 words

  7. The events of September 11, 2001, consisted of four different terrorist attacks planned and carried out by al-Qaeda. Two different hijacked airplanes flew into both North and South World Trade Center towers. Each ended up catching on fire and collapsing moments after. Another airplane crashed into the Pentagon and collapsed the western side of the building. The fourth and final airplane was heading towards Washington D. C. when the passengers realized what was going on and decided to overcome the hijackers and the plane ended up crashing in a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks killed 3,000 people and killed more than 6,000 others. (105)

High School Musical was released on January 20, 2006. This film is a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet and upon its release it became one of the most successful films that Disney Channel Original Movie has ever produced. The soundtrack for this film ended up reaching number one on the American charts in the year it was released. It became one of Disney’s most watched films that year with over 7.7 million people watched it when it was released. Globally it has been seen by over 225 million viewers. Despite its negative reviews, this movie became a pop culture sensation of the early 2000s. (106)

  8. One major political event was the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. These attacks sparked huge controversy. The attacks brought down both twin towers in New York City, and a plane even crashed into the Pentagon in Washington. There was also one other plane which crashed into a open field in Pennsylvania. All of these aircrafts were hijacked my Al-Qaeda terrorist members sent by Osama Bin Laden. In all of the attacks a total of around 3000 people died. This was a tragedy that spread accross america like wildfire. No one expected this so we were not prepared as a country. Now that time has passed, we have extensive security checks in airports and other major places. (117)

One major cultural event in the 2000s was the realease of the imfamous iPod.the iPod was a mp3 player which changed the music listening world. It was a product made and produced by Apple. This was the first super simple mp3 player. The iPod also could hold about 1000 songs and even up to 2000 a year later when they came out with a 10gb version. The iPod could also support many different file types it was not just stuck to mp3 files. The first iPods were pretty pricey but they got cheaper as technology advanced. iPods eventually got to have their own cameras which was pretty much an iPhone without the cell service. (115)

  9. Political event: Hurricane Katrina (2006)
Hurricane Katrina was an extremely destructive and deadly Category 5 hurricane that caused catastrophic damage along the Gulf coast from central Florida to Texas, much of it due to the storm surge and levee failure. Severe property damage occurred in coastal areas, such as Mississippi beachfront towns where boats and casino barges rammed buildings, pushing cars and houses inland; water reached 6–12 miles (10–19 km) from the beach. The storm was the third most intense United States landfalling tropical cyclone, behind the 1935 Labor Day hurricane and Hurricane Camille in 1969. Overall, at least 1,245 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods, making it the deadliest United States hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. Total property damage was estimated at $125 billion (2005 USD), roughly four times the damage wrought by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 in the United States, and is tied with Hurricane Harvey of 2017 as the costliest tropical cyclone on record. (162)

    Cultural event: Social media
Social media in the 2000’s is a lot of what people do now a days. Instead of watching these actual tv they will go on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat. And people will send hours and hours just on one media cite, but what about all 4 that most people have and you can spend days just looking at your feed, snap stories, or go on rants or watch rants happen on twitter. Social media is affecting the world is a positive and in a negative way. We have more access to the world which can be seen as good and bad, but it’s how we use these tools that determine whether we need less regulations of social media. (125)

  11. In 2001 America was hit with a very sad tragedy happened that shook the whole nation. Four planes had terrorists on them looking to harm thousands of inistent Americans. The day of September 11th 2001 was filled with morning and crying because two of these planes were headed to the World Trade Center, one to the Pentagon and the other headed of the White House. Three out of the four planes hit their target. The plane headed for the White House was taken down by passengers on the plane in a field in Pennsylvania. The two that hit the World Trade Center killed a total of 2,753 people and the plane that's hit the Pentagon killed 125 and 265 people where killed on the planes. This day will live in infamy in American history.(134)

In the 2000s social media started to gain relevance. MySpace was huge way for teens and young adults to learn and keep up with each other's life's. This was one of the very first social media platforms and it started and set a pathway for the apps and platforms we use today. After MySpace a man named Mark Zuckerberg came up with a site called Facebook which completely completely changed the game. You could now post pictures, you thoughts and about anything you could think of. And facebook was stepping stone for some of the most popular platforms today, instagram and twitter. (102)

  13. I did my political event on the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. Nobody saw the terrorist attacks coming. Apparently this attack had been planned for quite some time by Al-Qaeda. The Islamic terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden had sent out a message before the attack about them having their turn at taking a shot at the United States. The attacks were on the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, and what would have been the White House but instead the plane hit a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The terrorists would board the planes that would have the most fuel and when it was their time to act they would take over the planes that they were on and hijack them and try to eliminate their targets. The only target that did not succeed was when one plane was suppose to hit the White House but instead it hit a field in Pennsylvania because the passengers on the plane did not want to be used as bait so they went down with a fight. In the aftermath, there were at least 3,000 people who lost their lives that day. (168 words)
The cultural event that I picked was when High School Musical first came out in 2006. Over the years, it became a huge hit especially when High School Musical 2 and 3 came out later on. People still watch High School Musical even to this day currently. High School Musical is basically the story of two people meeting each other at a New Year's Eve party and they were singing together. Then, they met each other again at the school that they go to. Gabriella was new to Troy Bolton's school. They eventually are together but then split up and come back together in all three movies of High School Musical. (111 words)

  14. My political event of the 2000 is Barack Obama entrance to presidency becoming the 1st president to be an African American. He was elected as president after beating Senator John McCain with nearly 53 percent of the popular vote and 365 electoral votes which is out of 538. On January20, 2009, Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. Obama emerged as unlikely candidate during the 20008 presidential campaign. He was born on Aug. 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He entered public office as a state senator in 1997 then attracted national attention in the summer of 2004 when he gave the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention. words113

  15. My cultural event of the 2000s is on when Google redefines the internet in 2004. Near the beginning of the internet Google started out as simply a research project in 1996 by then PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. Google has become a multinational technology company with industry leadership in Internet related services and products. Between its foundation as a company in 1998 and now, Google has gone through many transformations like how it went public in 2004 after a series of missteps then google was finally pulled off its much hyped initial public offering which made the co-founders very rich and they totally deservedly. words109

This is a picture of the first ipod ever released. The first ipod was released October 23, 2001. The ipod was not the first mp3 player ever released but it was the first really great ipod ever released. It was easy to use and had a simply beautiful design. A supper cool feature of the ipod was its “shuffle” button. This feature allowed the ipod to pick what song would play next so that you never knew what was coming. From 2001-2010 220million ipods were sold. Everyone knew the ipod and everyone loved it. It changed the way we think about and listen to music. The ipod was an iconic invention of the 2000’s. (114)

This is a picture of what happened on September 9, 2001. On that day 4 airplanes were hijacked by Islamic extremist from the group Al-Qaeda. Two of those planes crashed into the twin towers in New York. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC. A fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people were killed. Americans and people across the world were shocked that Al-Qaeda could and did do something like this. As soon as George W. Busch found out Al-Qaeda was responsible, he sent troops to take care of then and their leader Osama Bin Laden. This huge attack scared and angered so many people in the 2000s. (115)

  17. There were many cultural events of the 2000’s but none were near as important as the 9/11 terrorist attack. As Islamic terrorists funded by Al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Ladin easily smuggled knives onto their flights, the four American Airlines planes were taken over. At 8:45 am on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the first plane crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. Cameras watched what they believed to be a “freak accident” until 18 minutes later when a second flight sliced into the south tower. One hour after the initial attack, a third flight crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Soon after this, both towers collapsed. Only six people survived. When the fourth flight was overtaken, passengers had heard of the catastrophes that had happened in New York and DC. They planned an insurrection, many leaving heart-wrenching messages to loved ones. The plane crashed in a rural field in Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board. A total of 2,296 people were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attack.

A major political event in recent years was the election of Donald Trump. Donald Trump, an extremely wealthy business man from New York, won the Republican ticket with the help of his running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence. Former Secretary of State and former First Lady Hillary Clinton won the Democratic ticket, alongside her running mate Tim Kaine, after defeating challenger Bernie Sanders. Both campaigns were controversial, and debates between candidates became personal. Although Clinton won the popular vote, about 2.9 million more than Trump, Trump won 57% of the electoral votes, winning the presidency. Trump won major states including Texas, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. He also won nearly every southern state.

  18. One big cultural movement during the 2000s was gay rights. President Obama played a big role in helping out the LGBT community during his presidency, and served a big in gaining this community's rights. He made a law in 2009 help LGBT children who struggled with bullying by banning “hate crimes.” The following year, president Barack Obama allowed member of the LGBT community to serve America in the Army, Navy, etc. In 2011 president Barack Obama signed a law that allowed people of the the same sex to be legally married in America. Obama saw that there was a struggle with people discriminating gay people so he later put a law in motion that made it illegal to do such thing.

One big political event during the 2000s was the attacks one the two World Trade Center buildings, more commonly known as the 9/11 attacks. This was a terrorist attack that really opened America’s eyes to the growing terrorist threat, because before this happened we were not as concerned since it did not really affect us. After this happened our nation sought out to destroy all of the dangerous terrorist threats. There were also stricter laws made in airports to make planes safer to travel on. There have also been background searches and surveillance of suspicious people. This event opened America’s eye to these new threats.

  20. In 2002, the movie Spider-Man was released to the public. Spider-Man was played by Tobey McQuire who was one of the first actors to play the character. His movie was the beginning of the Spider-Man movie legacy, and was the premise of most superhero movies today. It is one of my favorite movies plus he is my favorite superhero. My opinion Tobey McQuire plays one of the best versions of the Superhero. He shows what someone has to deal with when you have those powers. This affected the culture because movies were such a big thing that the economy rose through the roof.(102)

  21. The culture event of the early 2000s I researched was the realize of the iPod. The iPod released October 23, 2001. This first iPod was huge compared to the iPhones we have today. The first iPod was not touch screen, and was ink capable of playing downloaded music. But Apple soon came out with the iPod Touch, which is what I got for a Christmas gift in third grade. The iPod Touch was basically an iPhone but without calling or texting. It was a huge breakthrough because there was nothing like it out yet. And as we know, the iPod slimmed down and became more practical. (104)
The political event of the 2000s that I researched was the entrance into the presidency of Barak Obama. I was in elementary school, probably third grade but I can’t exactly remember, when Obama became president. This was a HUGE deal because he was the first African American to be president. I knew little to nothing about politics at that time, but I do remember it seemed like the African American community wanted him to be president to take that next step in racial equality. Now of course slavery was outlawed at this time, but some still believed there was racial inequality so this was the next step in ending that. During his presidency Osama Bin Ladin was killed. (117)

The election was very close but in the end trump pulled it off. Trump’s motto was “make America great again”. Many people like trump because of his very aggressive stance on immigration, and because of his business skills. There are several scandals revolving around Trump. One scandal that was a big deal during his campaign was that he wasn’t paying his taxes. Another scandal was when people thought that Russia rigged the election to help trump win.

The state suffered from multiple large-scale blackouts, one of the state's largest energy companies actually collapsed. "Drought, delays in approval of new power plants, and market manipulation decreased supply." On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Bush. (106)

The impact of the plane left a hole on the 80th floor and killed hundreds instantly. This is the catalyst to the war in iraq(115).

The iPhone was first released in June 29, 2007. Initially priced at US $499 and US $599 for the 4GB models and 8GB models respectively, the iPhone went on sale on June 29, 2007. In the US and some other countries, iPhones could only be acquired with a credit card, preventing completely anonymous purchases of iPhones. At the time, there was no way to opt out of the bundled AT&T data plan. At first, iPhones could not be added to an AT&T Business account, and any existing business account discounts could not be applied to an iPhone AT&T account. AT&T changed these restrictions in late January 2008. Early estimates by technology analysts estimated sales of between 250,000 and 700,000 iPhones in the first weekend alone. The iPhone continues to be one of the most popular phones to this day. (139)

  26. The 2000s are full of political events. The one political event that i chose was the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the world trade center. These attacks were jihad attacks carried out by the worldly known terrorist, Osama Bin Laden. He was the leader of Al queda and was a huge factor in our war against terrorism. He became an icon for these things that we fear and after the 9/11 attacks, he was wanted world wide and the United States would stop at nothing to end this horrible man's life. After the United states got an upper hand on Al Queda, Osama ran becasue he could not fight us himslef. He hid in a bunker in plain sight and on May 2, 2011, Seal Team 6 carried out a secret mission that would successfully kill Osama Bin Laden. We do not know which one of the soldiers killed Bin Laden for sure, but the one thing that I know... They all are very brave heroes who took responsibility to avenge the deaths of thousands of people. (178)

The cultural event that I chose was the release of facebook. Facebook shaped the social media that we all know and love today. (well most of everyone) The website was a way that people could keep up with each other. The idea was that people could make an account and were able to put basically whatever they wanted to on it. The website was made by Marc zuckerburg. Facebook would lead us into the twitter and instagram era. Facebook has changed my life because it was the first social media. I dont use facebook, but I do use intagram and i know for sure that would not be around if it werent for facebook. 114
