North + South: How Different Were They?

In Chapter 14, we will be talking about differences between the Northern and Southern States in the 1800's. In the Northern states, the nineteenth century was a time of immigration, industrialization and growth. Many immigrants, women and children worked long hours in factories trying to make enough money to make ends meet while others were climbing up the social ladder of wealth and prosperity. Watch this video to hear more about the tenements that people called home and learn "How the Other Half Lives." What surprises you about this video?

Now, I'm sure you recall that in the 1800's slavery was commonplace in the South. Even though the living conditions of slaves heavily depended on the hearts of their Slave-Master, all of the slaves experienced a rough journey to the Americas. Read this article to discover what the journey to the Americas was like for captured slaves.

For your comment this week, post about the similarities and differences between the experiences of the slaves in the South and the poor living conditions of many in Northern cities. What were the attitudes of the people "above" them?

  1. The north and south were very different. I think the biggest argument that went on for what seemed liked forever was that the north did not want slaves and the south did. The south needed slaves because of the hot weather and the towing of crops. The north did not understand this because it was always cold so they never were able to grow crops. There were also a lot more factories in the north than there was in the south. Even children were working long hours in the factories in the North. Overall there were many differences in the north and south states of America.

  2. Well I think that the difference between the attitude of the people above and the slaves is that the people in poverty had to have a harder worth ethic because you actually get payed and you want to get payed more so you work harder. While the slaves have to have more hope that things might get better. I mean they probably had a good work ethics and all but why work hard if your bound to do that til you die. The only reward is that they may not punish you.mThey are also similar as in there are wealthy people treating them like first while they are working their butts off just trying to make a living or get food.

  3. This weeks blog is about the differences and similarities between the North and South.

There were some similarities from the North and the South, but I think that there was mainly differences. The main difference was that the South wanted Slaves, and the North didn't. In the South, slaves were abundant because agriculture was a huge part of the southern life. The hot weather in the south caused the farm owners to need help with their agricultural work, which in return means they buy more slaves. In the north there wasn't as a much of a need for slaves, because it was cold, and there were much less farmers. The north also became industrialized much quicker than the south.

  4. There was many many differences between the north and the south. The biggest was the south wanted states and the north Didn't. The living conditions were both terrible. In the north, the poor lived in tenement buildings that held many Families. There was whole families that lived in one room. They were all crammed together in the smallest space. There was no ventilation and they all usually starved. In the south, the slaves were crammed together in small spaces on ships and they didn't get anything. The northerners probably wanted to work to make money and get food but the slaves probably wanted to refuse work cuz they weren't getting paid.

  5. The north and south had many differences. The biggest difference was slaves. The north didn't want slaves but the south wanted them. The souths population was made up of a large amount of slaves. Slaves did not count as a whole person though. The north included the everything from Missouri's south border across was the line that considered if you were in the north or south. Anything below the line and Missouri was the south. Anything above it was the north. The south thought they needed slabs because they had farms and factories and other places that hired people to work. The north didn't have farms and factories.

  6. The North and the South were very different. For one, the North didn't want slaves, but the South did. The North had many factories, whereas the South was more agricultural based. However, one similarity that the North and South shared was the living conditions of slaves and people living in the Northern cities. The people that worked in factories in the North had hard living conditions, just like the slaves. They were often cramped and didn't have proper ventilation. They would also catch diseases a lot. However, the people living in the North still had better living conditions than slaves. Not only did they work for money, but they also weren't beaten if they did something wrong.

  7. There were many differences amoung the North and the South. A as many people have said, the biggest difference between these two "sides" was the fact that one side permitted slavery, and one didn't. Yet there were other differences. For example; one side focused more on industrial revolution like factories, while the other focused on King cotton and farming. Yet they were both similar because both sides were putting failed at hard Work. The factories in the North made young kids work long hours, and same In the south. The attitudes towards the workers from the people "above" them was not that nice. Factory conditions were bad, the owners had no care for the conditions of the People, and the slave owners worked the slaves to the brink of death. Just when you think the North and South were different, they are actually very similar. -145

  8. There where a lot of different things about the north and the south. There where many arguments but one in particulate where slaves. I think that was our largest civil argument. The north beloved in being free but the south beloved in slaves lots of slaves. One other difference was that the south had no factory's but they just had farms. I think the south would have been smarter to just make a factory in the south .

  9. 1.) if I were a slave, even though the northern slaves were treated worse, you would have a better chance of getting out. They were closer to Canada then the southern slaves, so if it were me, I would have had more hope of getting out if I was closer to Canada. Northern slaves worked in factories and other plants, because they had more factories than farmers. If you were a southern slave, you would spend your day in the hot sun, working, and not get many breaks, and actually had to work hard outside. I would have wanted to be a northern skate, (I wouldn't have wanted to be a slave at all but if I had to choose, northern slaves seemed to have better conditions.)

  10. The North and the South had a lot of differences between them with slaves and living in the north. The South had slaves while the North had woman working for them in the factories. The slaves were not treated well because they didn't get paid. Woman in the North mainly worked in the factories and they are working to make money for their families. The slaves and woman were both not treated as they should be because they build this work. They worked to make a living for everybody else. Woman at least had some freedom while the slaves couldn't leave where they worked. But they both worked and put in blood, sweat, and tears into making to word a better place for the white men and the white children. Word count 130

  11. There are many differences and similarities between the north and the south. One thing that was different about them was in the south people had slaves and farms and the north didn't have those things. The north however had nice buildings and had much to see and do. The similarities between the north and south is that they both had cotton. Another difference between the north and the south is that the North had more civilized people and a more controlled government. The attitudes of the people above them were strong and harsh. One more similarity between the north and south was that they had very difficult work they had to do. 112 words

  12. The slaves in the south and the poor people in the north were surprisingly similar in the 1800's. Both were in an inescapable status, because slaves were rarely set free, and if you were born poor in the north, you stayed that way. This was a terrible way to treat all these people, and the ones to blame are the ones above them. Whether it was a plantation owner or a rich merchant in the north, they looked down on all the people below them. This is highly uncalled for, because those below them are the same species as them. There is no earthly reason to treat anyone lower than you, whether it's race, gender, disabilities, or poorness.

  13. Between the two, north and south, was who thought slaves should be here and slaves should not. One side slaves were great, and the other they were not. One was all about manufacturing/industrial work, and the other farming, cotton. But both didn't go on like they planed. They both failed. Basically everyone was treated like slaves. Everyone was worked too hard, except the hirer ups, and pushed to their best all the time. No body Had a break. Now there is No difference. The words, the south is slave free is now wrong. Everyone in the south were slaves. And the people in the north had even more slaves, plus they got to know what if felt like. Practically, they're more similar then different.

  14. They both had their similarities and differences either way. Either way both would be put to work in many many ways. The how And where you were born meant a lot back in the old days. For example if you were born in like the North like poor then from then on there you were going to be poor. Really confusing was each side of slaves were very different one side would do these types of jobs and the other would be different. Like working on manufacturing with factories and so much more. Not to mention in the north they had a lot more slaves than most.

  15. The living conditions of slaves and the poor in the North had similarities and differences. Those who were poor in the North often live in Tenements. These were structures that had rooms cramped next to each other, giving families a marginal amount of room to live. The most significant difference between slaves and those in poverty would probably be freedom, and the reliability of living. Those in poverty could control their activities, but often could not make a sufficient income to feed themselves and their family. However, slaves were often fed sufficient enough so that they could live. However, they faced the struggle of being beaten, especially if their masters viewed their work insufficient. In the end, the North and South really didn’t know much about each other, nor did they care.

  16. The african americans had the same awful conditions as the poor they got split up from their family members and worked hard even thou they made a very little difference at least in the pools case because it was like the slaves not getting paid at all and the poor lost all of their because of the expense that they had on a daily basis. However they where not whipped and mistreated as badly as the slaves were and did not live through such harsh punishment. The poor did live in what ever they could even if that was an outhouse and they got very sick from it. (Word count 108)

  17. The lower class in the north and slaves in the south had many similarities. They were both stuck in their social standing as those who were poor in the North had little chance of rising above their social status and slaves had no rights or social status. Both had poor living conditions and faced many different struggles. They also had their differences. Those who were poor made money,if they went to work.Slaves made no money from the work they did.If a poor person in the north was white, they were,by Southern standards at least, considered better than an African American slave.(105 words)

  18. Their differences and similarities are some what the same. People that went through slavery were just like people who lived in Tentement. Slaves starved and so did families in Tentement. Slaves were Christians just like people in Tentement. The differences were that people that lived in Tentement got jobs, better housing and they were living independently. Slaves didn't get better jobs their jobs just got harder. They didn't get better housing in fact their houses were way worse than people who lived in Tentement. Slaves were sold and split up from their families people who lived in tentement didn't have a clue about how it felt to be split up and sold for their families. The only good thing that came from the two were that young men and women were able to have a relationship. So yeah both of them had some similarities and differences, but neither one of them knew what it was like for each other to be living that way.

  19. The north and the south were similar and different in several ways. But, they were mainly different. If you think about it, slaves were treated the same in both places. So we're all of the workers. The workers were one hundred percent, treated like trash. The factories were awful and very dangerous. The higher up didn't care about how the slaves were feeling or how their bodies were deteriorating. One side was focused on industrial, and the other was focused on King Cotton. If you really take the time to think about it, they really aren't that different. They were still just cruel, greedy people.

  20. There were many different way they were similar and there also many ways they were different. For one they both had slaves but one was not as effective in slavery. They all we dehumanized by their masters. They were often put in danger in the factories. The upper class barley noticed they lower class and the slaves. The walked all over them as if the were a place mat. They were all greedy and mean. Today there are still people like that but the good thing is that most don't own slaves and are not allowed to. Blacks were often treated as animals which was not right. People were not right is this time.

  21. The north and the south had some differences and also some of the same. One huge difference was that the north did not want slaves at all. But on the other side, the south had wanted slaves because of crops. The north never wanted any slaves because it was always cold and they never had any warm weather. One similarity the north and the south had was living conditions. The people that had worked in the north, had a very hard life just like a slave in the south did. Another similarity was the children. The children in the north and south would have to work just as hard as the adults did.

  22. 1. one thing that surprised me about this video was how the slave slept. it shocked me that usually the babies where to sleep in just a shawl and the other children would sleep in boxes.
    2. the north and south had multiple similarities and differences. one of the major ones was how in the north slaves werent as common as in the south, which obviously caused many conflicts.
    3. i feel like the people higher than the poor people were rude and selfish. they thought that they were too good for everyone and made sure that everyone else knew. in my opinion, they were just trying to make other people feel bad, that brought them joy.

  23. The north and the south had many differences and similarities. The people in the north didn't care about the people under them. The people in the tenements were very poor and the people above the tenements could care less as long as they stayed where they were. The people in these tenements were so poor tht some of their children would starve to death. The slaves were treated the same everywhere they were. Slaves weren't even known as people, they were property. They were beaten, tortured, and held hostage for hundreds of years. The north didn't feel the need for slaves, but the south did because the south Is were most of the crops came from. Dope who were higher up in society felt like they were just fine where they were as long as they stayed there. They didn't care about the well being of anyone below their "class." 150 words

  24. The greatest difference between the North and the South was that the South "needed" slavery. The South was an agricultural area while the North was known for its factories. But both sides had poor living and working conditions. People were cramped into small living spaces; disease spread easier this way and many people would fall sick. Everyone, including women young children, had to work long and hard hours. Slaves in the South were not paid and were treated very poorly. Slaves had no freedom at all. People who worked in Northern factories were paid (though not very much) and had some freedom. The North and South had many differences but they also had many similarities.

  25. There are many differences and similarities between the slaves and the poor people in the north. One of the main examples known of this is that even thought the poor people in the north were still treated like they actually had humanity they still did not have it well because they did not have enough money to live off of most of the time. Another example is that even though the poor condition in the north the people still had their freedom and could choose for themselves as for the slaves they did not have a choice as to what they want to do they did not have the freedom to choose. For the slaves and the north the are more examples of how they are similar and still different to but these are the most common three.
