Perry is a Great War hero and should be remembered greatly. When he first got to Erie, Pennsylvania, he had an unfinished fleet of tiny ships. He worked for months on end to get these ships built in case of a British attack. When the British finally did attack, he used his tiny ships and still defeated the large ships of the British navy. This shows extreme courage so he should be remembered for many years.

  17. Oliver Hazard Perry was a great figure in American History. He was born on August 23, 1785 in South Kingston, which was a rural area near the village of Wakefield, Rhode Island. His parents had a whopping total of eight children, Oliver being the oldest of them. He was warranted a midshipman position on April 17, 1799 by the U.S. navy. During his time in the Navy, he fought in the Battle of Lake Eerie. He is known to be a war hero, especially due to the perilous fights occurring in the area. He eventually brought victory to the United States, a newly formed country. Quite interestingly, he was recruited into the navy the same day the Declaration of Independence was signed. In 1813, Oliver resigned from the navy.
In 1819, Oliver unfortunately died to Yellow Fever. His legacy lies in the Battle of Lake Eerie, where he was the commander of a frigate. He maneuvered it and greatly used it to his advantage in order to tackle England head-on. Because of him, we were able to be declares victorious in the Battle of Lake Eerie.
