  1. The definition for manifest destiny is American expansion throughout the continents that is justified and inevitable.

I don't really know if these count as examples, but what I would say is one example is Texas. Texas was a big addition to the U.S. It was a very big state that gave us a lot more people, but one thing northerners didn't like was the fact that it was a slave state because it was below the line. Another example would be New Mexico and California. We fought hard, and got independence. California was a big addition to because if how big it was also.

  2. The definition of Manifest destiny is a term for the attitude prevalent during the 19th century period of American expansion that the United States not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast. This attitude helped fuel western settlement, Native American removal and war with Mexico.
The American settlers are trying to move west in the painting and that's exactly what they were trying to do when they were trying to move towards California. They were also moving into a darker time. Which is also effectively true because as they moved closer west they moved closer to war with Mexico. Word count 103

  3. Manifest Destiny is the expansion of U.S territory that is inevitable.

As Texas was being ruled by Mexico, Americans pours into Texas, and as time passed, and progress was being made, Americans and Tejanos came together to fight for the indepence of Texas. Then a few fights later, Texas became was annexed. Another example of progress made was Calfornia and how their population exploded because of the discovery of gold. After one bit of gold was discovered, the population went from a small bit, to a huge population. Many years later there were many more states added to the union, and economical examples. 104

  4. The manifest destiny was a definition created by Jonathan L O'Sullivan, which stated that America had the right to take whatever land we want because it was ordained by God that we should conquer land.

This is shown in the annexation and Immigrations of Texas, California, and Oregon. All of these territories were taken when we had our people immigrate into these areas, even if it was illegal. In the case of California and Texas, we had to fight for the land, specifically in the Mexican-American war (Texas) and the Bear Flag Rebellion (California). This led to America gaining much land, and we didn't care who or what got in our way

  5. The saying manifested destiny was them having a planed destiny. That is justified and has reason.

Texsas was such a big state that so many people started coming in. So the Americans where trying to get to the land first so that they could call it there's. Like when you and your friend want to sit in the back of the bus together u run to get that spot and call it yours. Another example is with the Spanish in California once we found out that there was gold there we had intention to go over there and move hurt or kill anyone in our way

  6. Manifest Destiny is basically when the 19th century Americans believed that the borders of America should stretch coast to coast. For this reason, Americans began moving westward and also started fighting with Mexico and the Native Americans. The painting "American Crossing" represents this very well in my opinion. It shows Americans moving westward while pushing the Native Americans out, who are in the corner. The Native Americans also look really sad and there are dark rainclouds, which could also represent sadness. In the right section of the painting, it shows Americans moving and building stuff. It also shows them building railroads and gardening.

  7. Manifest Destiny was the idea that not only could the United States expand their territory further west, but they were destined by God to stretch their country from coast to coast.
The picture American Progress shows groups of people traveling west - the people wanted to settle further west. The settlers were attempting to reach California. Americans wanted America to go from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The picture also depicts an angel going over the travelers. It seems as if the angel is guiding the travelers west. Many people believed that God destined the United States to expand its boarders.

  8. This weeks blog is about Manifest Destiny. Was it inspired by God for America to move west?

Manifest destiny was not only the expansion of America to the West, but it was also said to be inspired by God. They thought that it was God's plan for America to move west. Regardless if it was God's "plan" or not, America proceeded and went west. Some knew that it could be dangerous to move from coast to coast, but the danger didn't stop them.

In the picture, American Progress, you can see the people moving from their home town to the west. It interesting that the painter made their home light, and there path dark. I think the painter did this because of the possible dangers along the journey. The painting also shows that not everyone had horses and of wagons. Many people had to walk on foot.

  9. The definition for The Manifest Destiny is the belief that the expansion of the US throughout the other American continents when it was both justified and inevitable. Also it means the expansion for all of the United States territory that is inevitable. The painting, American Progress shows people and animals going/moving to the west. People were trying to move closer to California. We had a war with the Mexicans known as the Mexican-American war. Basically we were fighting for California and Texas. America ended up winning the war against Mexico and we emended up getting California, Texas, and also Oregon.

  10. Manifest Destiny was a belief that was widely held that the destiny of American settlers was to expand and move across the continent to spread their traditions and their institutions. Manifest destiny could be seen from 2 different perspectives. It was a something that people thought of as like a yes or no.
One example was that the people wanted Texas to be apart of the states but Mexico was still in control of it. Another one was that settlers wanted to move west to Oregon on the Oregon trail to get more land. Another reason could be was getting to crowded in the states that were already established.

  11. The Manifest Dynasty means several things to people. To me, it just means the expansion of the United States towards California that was justified by God.

My two examples are pretty different. My first one is the running horses. This symbols how fast people were jumping up and leaving everything for the slim chance of finding gold. I personally think this was pointless, you could prosper at home but, some people were and are greedy and make impulsive decisions. My second point was how the lighting on the right, where the are coming from, is light and happy looking, clear skies. On the left, where they seem to be going, is dark and gloomy. This symbols the risks and worries of families to me.

  12. Manifest Destiny is a term for the attitude prevalent during the 19th century period of American expansion that the United States not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast.

My first example is everyone in the painting is heading West, and they are taking all of their stuff with them.

My second example is the sky in the painting. There's one part that's dark and gray. There's another part that's lightened up and colorful. It's like the lightened up part of the sky is spreading into the darkened space. So not only are the people moving but the sky is too.

  13. Manifest destiny is the 19th-century doctrine or belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable. One of the examples of manifest destiny is that the Angel is going from the light side to the dark side in the picture. The second example of manifest destiny is that the Indians are running away from their and the us people are moving in to the land and making it their land and that is exactly what we did to the Indians we came in and the Indians went running out of the land.

  14. The Manifest Destiny was the thought by the settlers of the United States in the 1800s that they were entrusted by God with the mission to settle from coast to coast and civilize all the inhabitants. It was believed that this was our destiny, given to us by God.

Example one is how one side of the picture is like a darkness a mysterious place no one ventures to but the other side is light and filled with life. It has feel that as the travelers move west they are bringing that light with them and explored get the unknown and solving the mystery that God wants them to know.

Example two is how as they move west they bring civilization with them. You can tell by how as they move forward you can see how they carryover the trains, power lines and etc. with them

  15. Manifest destiny was a term that was made to basically say America had every right to claim land. So we could basically we claim this because we have the rifts wether it was we were white, free, or a citizen we had the rights.

Example 1- Texas was a great example because we didn't own it. Mexico owned Texas at the time. We basically came into Texas and said we are fining to fight you for this land. That is exactly what we did we fought Mexico and we now own Texas.

Example 2- California was another state. We didn't own if yet but it had good which is what we wanted so we came in and "claimed" it.

  16. Manifest Destiny: “the 19th-century doctrine or belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable.” (Google)
I think the clearest evidence in regards to this definition would be the pioneers traveling. In the famous picture called “American Progress”, people appeared to be traveling, not only by carriage, but also by boat, and even train.
Towards the lower section of the picture, there appears to be fertile farm land, and a log cabin. Within that area, a cow and a plow appears, probably indicating that farming advancements were occurring, and that there was motivation to farm, probably because the economy was booming.

  19. the definition of manifest destiny is "belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable."
1.) I think they thought it was okay, but at the same time they didn't. I don't really understand what the question/definition means so I'm going off of what I know. But I think some of America was okay with the expansion, because they wanted more people to live in America. But then other people don't want more people to come and live in America, and then the US grows bigger. That's why up they say it was justified but also inevitable.

  21. Manifest destiny is essentially a term used to define the United States' God given right to expand to the Pacific by whatever means deemed nessecary and that the said expansion was completely justified.

1.An example of this is the angel leading the progress, she is representation of the divine power that was said to have approved of the expansion.

2.Another example would be the progress being made by the people depicted in the painting. They aren't only going into unknown land but the painting depicts trains, covered wagons, and what I assume to be are telegraph lines. It not only shows progress in territory but also in technology and advancement.(110 words)

they are obviously expanding in the picture and they look like they are making way and turning the unsettled and unexplored territory into settled land.
There is an angel that could be there like a messenger from God telling which way they needed to expand or justify that it was right.

  23. The to understand a term that is two words you must understand what each word means individually. Manifest means “clear or obvious to the eye or mind.” Destiny means “ the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future.” Another thing to consider is what are we talking about. We are talking about Americans moving to land near the pacific. Using this new learned knowledge, a valid definition for the manifest definition would be that expanded the US all the way to the Pacific Ocean is clear and obvious answer to positively effect our future as a country. Two examples of manifest destiny would be the 49’s moving west. This may have just been for the gold opportunity but all in all they did expand our country. Another example of manifest destiny is a quote I read in our textbook. To paraphrase, it was a man of great importance in the economy during the 19th century that said something like, it is God’s plan for the US to spread across over America. If it was who knows. I know God would not have wanted us kicking Native Americans out of the homes, but maybe it was in God’s plan. He of course knew it was going to happen. It could have been a lesson to not make the same mistake twice. Well so I do not get off on a rabbit trail I am going ahead to say… THE END.

  24. Well, Manifest destiny is a term for the attitude prevalent during the 19th century period of American expansion that the United States not only could, but was destined to, stretch from coast to coast. This attitude helped fuel western settlement, Native American removal and war with Mexico. There were many examples, but here are a few. for one, the Texas incident. This was how us Americans wanted Texas and fought for it. And after all the fight it became a state. Another would've been California. During that time Califorinia got popular for the gold source. Thus, California's population rose quickly and rapidly.

  25. This is the thought process upon a belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable. We didn't want anything to stop us. We got so far into it, that it really did become inevitable.

We wanted to expand our land and everybody wanted to own more land. As shown in the picture we were moving west and took many things and people with them. They were going from a good and light time, to a hard time and dark time without even knowing it, but we weren't gonna let people change our minds. (101)

    1. Outside the United States, the effects of manifest destiny were being seen in U.S. intervention in the Spanish-American war when United States ceded the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam to the U.S. This was an expansion of U.S. territory as colonies rather than states and was another demonstration of growing U.S. imperialism.
    2. The term of ‘Manifest Destiny’ first appeared in a newspaper article on the annexation of Texas in edition from July/August of the United States Magazine and Democratic Review in 1845. The author, John L. O’Sullivan used it to describe what majority of Americans at the time believed was their mission from God: to expand to west and bring the United States government to unenlightened people.
