  1. A political event in the 1970’s was Nixon’s trip to China to meet with Mao Zedong. A little while later 5 men are caught breaking in the water tower office. They are trying to steal confidential papers from the Democratic Party. There were many debates on if Nixon had anything to do with it or not. Eventually they found out that there were tape recorders recording all conversations in the White House. These would show id Nixon knew about it or not. One day Nixon was called to court forcing him to reveal the tapes which showed Nixon guilty of knowing about it forcing him to resign. (109)

There was a lot of inflation in the 1970’s. Many people were losing their jobs and many factories were shut down due to this. The United States was importing more items than exporting which caused great inflation and this hasn’t happened since 1889. Also during the 1970’s the band “The Beatles” disbanded. The movie “Jaws” was also created which was very popular during the time and is still considered a classic. Bill Gates and Paul Allen created Microsoft which was the start of the fame for Bill Gates soon leading him to being very rich. Saturday Night Live produced its first Live airing. (105)

  2. One major political event in the 1970s was the Watergate Scandal. The incident involved President Richard Nixon and led to his resignation. On June 17, 1972, there was a break-in by five men at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C. President Richard Nixon's administration's attempted to cover up its involvement. The scandal led to the discovery of multiple abuses of power by the Nixon administration. Nixon was not being truthful. On August 5, Nixon released the tapes, which provided undeniable evidence of his involvement in the Watergate Scandal. The House of Representatives then voted to impeach Nixon and he resigned. (107)

One cultural event that happened in 1975 was the first blockbuster film. Steven Spielberg's Jaws is considered the first summer blockbuster. It opened at 409 theaters in the US. The film had been scheduled to take 55 days of shooting, but actually took 159 days, and the budget was also doubled to 7 million dollars. It was such a big hit that in its first week of it being released, the film earned 14 million dollars. In the 59th day of it being released, the movie passed the 100 million dollar mark. Jaws is credited with inventing the wide release of films. (102)

  4. Political event: Creation of the EPA
The EPA stands for Enviormental Protextion Acts. This act was created to protect the health of humans by putting regulations on anything that Nixon said too. This act was ratified by both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The agency conducts environmental assessments, research, and education on the enforcement and how to help keep it clean so the American people can live a healthy life in a healthy place. The EPA’s respsibilities are to maintain and enforce the nature laws. They also get these laws to the people by talking to federal, local, and tribal governments. (109)

    Cultural event: Disney World opens
In 1965 walt Disney was secretly tracking and buying big somes of land in central Florida for a specific purpose. Later in 1965 Walt took a press conference to talk about his plans for his upcoming amusement park. Walt Disney opens his main attraction in October in 1971. It was a huge success, tourists from all across the country came to ride the rides, have a good time, and enjoy the hot and lovely weather of Central Florida. 6. On May 4, 1970, Four students from Kent state university were killed and nine were injured. The Ohio national guard opened fire on a crowd gathered to protest the Vietnam war. Immediately after the shooting, strikes led by students forced colleges and universities across the country to close temporarily. Hundreds of students gathered in the commons, a large space in the middle of the campus, to protest. Several speakers spoke out against the war, Nixon specifically. Some believe the events of this day changed the public's opinion of the Vietnam war and may have also contributed to the downfall of president Richard Nixon. (103)

  8. The political event of the 1970s is the Environmental movement which technically started in the 1960s like the crusade to protect the environment from all sorts of assaults toxic industrial waste in places like Love Canal, New York or the dangerous meltdowns at nuclear power plants such as the one at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania. Now in 1970s America celebrated their first Earth Day then an act that congress passed called the National Environmental Policy Act that ban DDT a powerful pestaic that has been damaging the environment. This act gave way to the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act which were passed two years later

  9. There were many celebrities and cultural events of the 1970’s, one of which was the famous Clint Eastwood. Clint was born on May 31, 1930, in San Francisco, California. After working odd jobs and acting in lower level films, Clint began to reach stardom in the late 1950’s. After setting up his own production company, Eastwood became involved in many popular Westerns, including High Plains Drifter (1973), and The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976). He also starred in some comedic films, including Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), and Every Which Way but Loose (1978). Clint Eastwood has continued to act and produce in many block-buster films, and is still alive today.

The Three Mile Island accident is one of the worst nuclear accidents in history, and it terrified many American citizens. After thriller film titled The China Syndrome hit theaters, Americans began to be on edge about the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. On March 28, 1979, a mechanical failure set off a series of events that led to a partial meltdown in the Unit 2 reactor. This led to a large amount of dangerous radioactive gases to leak into the surrounding air. Nearly two million people were exposed to some form of radiation as a result of the TMI accident.

  10. 1. The one political event that I found was, The Watergate scandal, it had interlocked political scandals of the administration of U.S. Pres. Richard M. Nixon that were revealed following the arrest of five burglars at Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in the Watergate office-apartment-hotel complex in Washington, D.C., on June 17, 1972. On August 9, 1974, facing likely impeachment for his role in covering up the scandal, Nixon became the only U.S. president to resign. That was the best option for him. Gerald R. Ford quickly took the place of Nixon after he resigned. (100)

    2. One change that made a huge impact on 70s culture was the growth of women’s rights. Women started making their way out of the kitchen and into the workplace. In the 70s it began to be “okay” for wives and moms to distribute responsibility for their home and family to others while they went out and made some extra bucks, money that helped pay for the houses and cars that were growing in size and cost. Mothers headed out to work each morning, the family unit was still an essential element of 70s culture, though what the family looked like began to change. The divorce rate began to go up towards the end of the decade. Another big thing in the 70s were technology. (103)

  12. On May 25, 1977 the first Star Wars movie was released. Millions of Americans rushed to the theaters to see Star Was: A New Hope staring Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford. This movie attracted many people because of the crazy and amazing world it took you too. This movie also had some of the greatest graphics and special effects of its time. It is the second highest grossing movie in the US and Canada. The movie was directed by George Lucas. Eight other Star Wars films have been made since 1977 and there are many more still to come. Star wars also has many tv series and an industry of comic books, toys, video games, and other merchandise. Star Wars is one of the most popular movies of the 1970s and today. (134)

The Pentagon Papers were published in 1971. These classified papers held information about America’s political and military involvement in Vietnam from 1945-1967. The papers were published by the Washington Post and the New York Times when Daniel Ellsberg gave them photocopies of the classified information. The papers showed how American leaders had constantly lied to the people about political and military involvement in Vietnam. The papers changed many Americans view on the government and its leaders. Ellsberg was sick of the Vietnam war and he did something about it and it changed America. Americans didn’t trust the government anymore. 105

  13. in The 1970s thre was two things that made the Americans mad, the Vietnam war and the water gate scandal. And in the early 70s you couldn’t read a newspaper without seeing something about one of the two. Watergate had been going on for awhile before anyone knew about it, nixson was keeping it under the radar. But when 5 burgelers broke in and stole it, it was revealed to the world and everyone knew about it and it was top page news for a while.(100)

The 1970s culture switched from rebellion to space. It was the year the first Star Wars had come out, everyone loved it. Almost everything in the 70s has a space theam to it. The cars had fins, the houses looked futuristic, and even the tv shows were about the future and how we were gonna live in space one day. So I think it is save to say that the 70s had a new culture from the 60s and I believe that the parents liked this one a lot more then the one before. The kids weren’t rebelling all the time, they would listen to resenig.(120)

  14. One major political event of the 1970's is the signing of the Anti Balistic Missile Treaty between the United States and the USSR. This treaty was an Arms Control treaty which limited the use of the Anti-Balistic missiles between the two countries. ABMs were missiles which intercepted balistic missiles. Balistic missiles often carry nuclear bombs. The treaty limited both countries to two ABM complexes. Also, each complex was limited to 100 missiles each. This treaty was signed on May 26, 1972, by Richard Hixson of the US and Leonid Brezhnev of the USSR. This was one of the biggest treaties signed in the 70s. (104)

There were many celebrities, movies, and many other cultural events during the 1970s. One major celebrity during the 70s would be Clint Eastwood. Clint was made very popular during the 70s. 15. One big political event from the 1970s was the oil crisis. When the Arab army went to war with the Israelites in 1973, America decided to assist the Israelite army. This made the Arabs angry, so they put an embargo on the oil the U.S imported from them. They raised the prices by 350%. The Arabs even tried punish other countries that helped the Israelites with an embargo as well. This hurt America’s economy and worried the people because Arab was one of the main sources that the U.S. got its oil from. This issue took many years to resolve.

The 70s was when the gay movement really began to gain attention. the 1970s was the first year a Congressman openly supported gays. Gay Pride week started in 1973. 17. 1. The environmental movement of the 1970s brought us basic environmental rules and rights that we have today. The 1970s brought us protection of our parks and reserves. Without the 70s we would not have places like the Volkswagen nature park, Harrison Bay State Park, and Lula Lake downtown. The people of the 70s began to realize that their once beautiful country was turning to a smog filled mess. Big yellow taxi was a song that spoke about the concerns of the time period in the environmental aspect of politics. The 70s gave us protection clean water along side emission regulations on vehicles. (103) Picture: https://goo.gl/images/duP3GN
    2. The 1979s is famous for the hippie movement. The hippie movement was people turning away from the previous ideas of nuclear war and showing dominance among the other countries of the world. Instead of the ideas of their grandparents the hippies turned to peace and they wanted world peace. The hippies are also famous for their new sense of fashion. The stereotypical hippie would have really long and unkept hair, they would be wearing tie dye of some sort on their body, they would often times have sunglasses on, they would wear bell bottoms, they would wear sandals, and they would have a lot of large jewelry most likely handmade and made from natural materials. 18. In 1976, the Supreme Court rules that the death penalty is not inherently cruel or unusual punishment. So it is a constitutionally acceptable form of punishment. This event was a big step in America to become a better and safer country. Now America will never be known as killer of criminals. This shows that we are willing to help people instead of killing them. This shows we use peaceful and less violent ways of dealing with crime in our country. It allows other people to come to our country if their countries are more violent then ours because they don’t want to deal with theirs any longer.(107)
In 1970, the first jumbo-jet, the Boeing 747, makes its debut commercial flight from New York to London. This will be the first of many jets to come in the future. This was a good invention that effected the culture by letting people have a way of traveling very far distances by air. So we don’t have to go on boats. It makes it way easier to travel make people’s lives easier. This made some of the planes we use today nowadays everyone uses jumbo-jets to go different places around the world. It was a great invention of the time.(100)

  19. The 1970s, otherwise known as "the seventies," held many important political events. One of those important events was the unfolding of the Watergate Scandal involving President at the time, Richard Nixon and his political party. Nixon did not directly order this burglary of his opposing political party. There would be no reason for Nixon to order this break in because he had such a controlling leader in the election that he would not even "need" to cheat. But some people of this decade were hurt by this and did not believe that Nixon did not have as much to do with it as they think. I do not believe Nixon was completely innocent, but I do believe he did not directly order the break in.

Cutlure was also a huge thing in this specific decade of history known as the seventies. the hippie movement was a big thing from this time period. The hippies went in the opposite direction of their ancestors. They turned to a different perspective which kind of got some people thinking and considering but other people hated the hippies. The hippies did not believe in word domination through war, but instead sought after peace in our nation but also throughout the world. Before the hippies everybody believed in the ways of the "silent majority", that is war and nuclear warfare. Some might consider the hippies as the counterculture movement of the seventies. (111)

  20. A 1970s political event that I found and was interesting was when President Nixon ordered the invasion of Cambodia. Millions of people marched in protest all over the United States on University campuses. This act widened the war in Vietnam. A lot of people did not want this invasion to happen because their lives would possibly have been in danger. Even though this act already happened, people wanted Nixon to stop the war but he refused. He wanted to keep the war going. He wanted to win. He wanted to also end Vietnam. (100 words)
A 1970s cultural event that I found and was interesting was a television program that was called Sesame Street. Sesame Street became popular in the early 1970s. Kids started watching it and it became a huge hit on Television. The program almost went through the roof. Now, it is not as popular today in our society. Some people watch it but some people don't watch it. It is a kid friendly show that is suppose to teach you about friendship and loving others and learning a little bit of school too. Some people found it as very educational but others found it probably boring. (103 words)

ERA stated that “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” Twenty-two of the necessary thirty-eight states ratified it right away and made it seem as though it would pass easily. To man conservative activists, ERA was seen as alarming. They were afraid that this amendment would undermine traditional gender roles. These activists were able to defeat this amendment. Indiana became the thirty-fifth and last state to ratify ERA in 1977. (114)

Planes were now able to carry more people, this jumbo-jet was able to carry up to five hundred and fifty people during one flight. It was no longer necessary to transport the same amount of people on smaller planes as it was done before. This helped decrease and control air traffic. (100)

The reason James McCord broke in as the Democratic Party had “dirt” on Nixon on his past as Nixon did a lot of bad things to people. Nixon didn’t go through much until he tried to cover it up. When later found out he had tapes of conversations he had to hand them over to the senate. Not much later he resigned the fiesta president to ever resign before he went to impeachment trial. One major event in the 1970s was the disbanding of The Beatles. The breakup started from 1968 to 1970. John Lennon privately informed the group that he was leaving in 1969. Paul McCartney announced he was leaving The Beatles on April 10, 1970, which is my birthday. Some of the causes for the break up was the death of their manager, Brian Epstein, and their differences in artistic visions. George Ringo and Ringo Starr both left the group temporarily, and by 1970 they were working all working on solo projects. They realized that it was not likely that they would get back together. The Beatles were one of the most influential and polarizing bands in world history. (117)

These top secret documents contained many secrets about the war that were not available to anyone outside of the pentagon. Daniel Ellsberg’s study on the war and the Pentagon Papers caused him to oppose the war and take photos of the top secret documents to reveal them to the public. Once these things were made known to the public it caused many more people to oppose the war. The leak also revealed how the Johnson Administration had lied to the public and to Congress about the war.
