There is no extra credit component this week.
One political event that happened in the 1980s was the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. In 1989, Communist leaders were replaced with democratic governments in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Romania. The communism in Poland also collapsed, which was the largest Communist country not including the Soviet Union. As a result, the guards at the Berlin Wall opened the gates on November 9, 1989, because of the fall of communism. Not long after that, the Berlin Wall was torn down by thousands of Germans. This meant that East Germany and West Germany were united again. They also began holding free elections. (101)
ReplyDeleteOne cultural event in the 1980s was the United States boycotting the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. They boycotted the Olympics to protest Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. 65 out of the 80 nations refused to participate in the games. President Carter could not order a U.S. boycott of the Games even though many Americans wanted a boycott. The U.S. Olympic Committee took a poll from the athletes and then voted whether to have the U.S. take part in the Games or not. Surprisingly, calls for boycotts of the Olympics were not uncommon. 4 years before the boycott in 1980, most of the nations of Africa boycotted the Olympics. It happened again in 1956. (115)
1. The political event I found in the 1980s was the diagnosis of AIDS in 1981. The first AIDS cases were reported in the United States in June 1981, the number of cases and deaths among people with AIDS increased rapidly during the 1980s followed by substantial declines in new cases and deaths in the late 1990s. This report describes the changes in the characteristics of people with AIDS since 1981. The greatest impact of the epidemic is among men who have sex with men (MSM) and among racial/ethnic minorities, with increases in the number of cases among women and of cases attributed to heterosexual transmission. The number of people living with AIDS has increased as deaths have declined. Controlling the epidemic requires prevention programs in all of these affected communities, particularly programs targeting MSM, women, and injection drug users. (139)
ReplyDelete2. The cultural event I found was a Grand Hotel in Las Vegas Destroyed by Fire. This event is also called MGM Grand fire. It occurred on November 21, 1980 in Paradise, Nevada. The fire killed 85 people. It was mostly through smoke inhalation. This remains the worst disaster in Nevada history, and the third-worst hotel fire in modern U.S. history. At the time of the fire, 5,000 people were in the hotel and casino. It was a 26 story resort. Approximately 7:07 a.m. on November 21, 1980, a fire broke out in a restaurant known as The Deli. It spread across the areas of the casino in which no fire sprinklers were installed. The fire spread rapidly. Seven people died in the casino. (124)
Political event: Atempted Assassination of Reagan
ReplyDeleteOn March 30, 1981, John Hinckley jr. comes out of the crowd to try to kill President Ronald Reagan outside of the Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C. Hinckley was armed with a .22 revolver with exploding bullets. He got a few shots off, but did not fulfill his mission of killing Reagan. Hinckley did hit Secretary James Brady, police officers, and secret sevice agents. He did hit Reagn’s presidential limo that ricocheted into his chest, but President Reagan makes a full recovery and the American people stood by him, praised him, and loved him through and through.

Cultural event: pac-man game releases
The pac-man character is based off food. The creator of pac-man Toru Iwatani was eating pizza when he came up with the idea of the character. Iwatani also said that the character is the simplification of the Kanji character for mouth (kuchi). While pizza became pac-man, cookies became power pellets. But sadly the cookies lost their form and color when the game came over to the United States. PAC-man came out in the 1980’s, but the first person to beat/finish the game happened 19 years after the games debut. This feet was completed by a 33 year old man named Billy Mitchell on July 3, 1999. In 1982 an estimated 30 million Americans spent $8 million a week on pac-man. PAC-man became so loved and widely played that they made spinoffs, and the most popular out of those was Ms. pac-man, who appereaed in 1981. Ms. PAC-man also being played so much that it had to have modifications. Ms. pac-man had 4 different mazes with different number of dots to get. The most dots in one maze was 240. Then more characters came out later in the 1990’s. (209)

My cultural event of 1980s is on the debut of the Rubik’s cube that’s name was originally name the magic cube in the 1974 but then renamed in the 1980s and went on to be one of the world’s best-selling toy. The cube itself is made with 26 smaller square surface cubes which rotate around an inner core and side of the cube is different colors so the objective was to match the colors on each side At this point 100,000,000 of them were sold between 1980 and 1982 then 300,000,000 million of them had been sold worldwide that’s including rip offs. words 102
ReplyDeleteMy political event of 1980s is the Rise of the New Right. The populist conservative movement known as the New Right enjoyed unprecedented growth in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Historians link the rise of this New Right in part to the growth of the so-called Sunbelt, a mostly suburban and rural region of Southeast, southwest and California, where the population began to expand after World War 2 and exploded during the 1970s. This demographic shift had important consequences. Many of the new Sun belters had migrated from older industrial cities of north and Midwest (the rust belt ).words100
ReplyDeleteThe 1980’s was an era of many cultural events. One of which was the explosion of NASA’s Challenger. After millions of people tuned in on television and hundreds in person, the Challenger Shuttle exploded just seventy three seconds after launching. Everyone on the Challenger, including Dick Scobee, Michael J Smith, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe passed away. Many United States classrooms watched because Christa McAuliffe was a teacher. She planned on filming some lessons from space. She never got this opportunity, because many faulty parts malfunctioned within the Challenger Space shuttle, even after warnings from engineers.

There were many interesting political events of the 1980’s, but most of which would never have happened if it were not for the elections of Ronald Reagan. After two terms as governor of California, Reagan decided he would run for president. At first George Bush was Reagan’s main Republican opposition, but he later became Reagan’s running mate. Ronald Reagan defeated President Jimmy Carter in 1980 and became the oldest president ever elected. Reagan achieved many things throughout the 80’s, including being in office during the Cold War, increasing the military, and cutting nuclear weapons with the Soviet Union. Reagan is looked at as the model president by many modern day conservatives.

There were many political events that occurred in the 1980s some being of more importance than others. One major political event that happened during the 80s was the attempted assassination of, the current president of that time, Ronald Reagan. He was shot on March 30th, 1981. Even though he was shot he was not fatally wounded and made a full recovery. The name of the shooter was John Hinckley Jr. He ran out of the crowd after Reagan walked out of the hotel and supposedly fired around 4 shots or so. He hit Reagan once and hit one of Reagan's guards once.(102)
ReplyDeleteOne cultural event that happened in the 80s was the creation of many video games some of which are still popular today. Some of these include Pac man, Galaga, Donkey Kong, Tetris, and even the very popular Super Mario Bros. Some of the games are still popular today, and some of the 80s games have inspired modern video games. The 80s was a time of entertainment and innovation. Not only were there new video games but there were home consoles that were made. The most popular of these included the NES and the Sega Genesis. These console fore-runners eventually inspired popular consoles today such as Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation. (110)
The leader of Afghanistan Hafizullah Amin made plans to try and "Westernize" His country. The people of Afghanistan did not like or back his decisions and protested in the east. And this new movement made many countries uneasy. One of the countries was the Soviet Union. The Soviet Unions government feared this would decrease their power in Asia. They moved troops into Afghanistan on Christmas eve of 1979 which meant they where ready for war. In response to this President Jimmy Carter announced American athletes will not be competing in the Olympics in which the host city was Moscow. In this boycott we were joined by 64 other countries.(109)
ReplyDeleteThe 1980's saw a great boom in pop culture. In this decade about 70% of homes had cable television and about 85% of those people had services such as HBO or Showtime. And if you lived out in the country you were not excluded from this movement. If the normal channels did not reach your home you'd simply purchases a bigger dish that would go on top of your home. In this decade there were many great and family friendly TV shows that came out such as, The Cosby show, Family Ties, The Golden Girls, Just to name a few.(100)
NASA’s STS-7 mission carried five astronauts aboard the shuttle and was completed over 6 days. The crew carried out several experiments and deployed two satellites. Sally Ride was the first woman in US history to go into space. The Soviet Union had sent a woman into space twenty years earlier on the Vostok 6. The crew members included; Robert L. Crippen, Frederick Hauck, John Fabian, Sally Ride, and Norman Thargard. A variety of experiments were held. Oe included studying affects of space on social behavior on an ant colony. Ten experiments were mounted on shuttle pallet satellite and performed research.(100)
ReplyDeleteThe rubix cube made its debut in January of 1980. The toy was created by Erno Rubik in the 1970s and was patented at the magic cube in Hungary in 1975. Later it was picked up by ideal toys to develop for the global market. After its debut, it made its appearance in stores in May. It was a huge success causing world wide craze. Competitions for those who could solve the puzzle the fastest soon emerged. The toy still remains popular today.(100)
Reagan is the definition of a leader in the 80s, he had a lot of political changes he had to go through during his time of being in office. He changed the military spending limit, he implied tax cuts which made the people happy. He also restricted the federal governments say in things so he let the people have more of a say in what was going on in the country and not just let everything be up to the government. Reagan had people from both parties mesmerized with his ideas, it was safe to say many people liked Reagan. (100)
ReplyDeletethe popular culture of the 1980s reflected the era’s political conservatism. For many people, the symbol of the decade was the yuppie, a baby with a college education, a well-paying job, and expensive taste. Many people derided yuppies for being self-centered, and surveys of young urban professionals across the country showed that they were, indeed, more concerned with making money and buying consumer goods than their parents and grandparents had been. However, in some ways it was less shallow and superficial than it appeared.(100)
In the 1980s Ronald Reagan made Martin Luther King Jr. Day a national holiday on the day of his birthday. This marked a change in America celebrating a great abolitionist in the civil rights movement. Making this day a holiday gives us a day to remember this great man who spoke from his heart about the situation. When he died it was one of the most tragic things to happen in history. I wish it never happened but by what he did helped end slavery in the United States. So we mark this day to remember who helped bring an end to slavery.(103)
ReplyDeleteMadonna was a pop-star and fashion icon whose style changed the way people dressed and look today. It changed their personalities made them act like her and change the world as we used to know it. It also changed the way people acted made them change who they are. From her came many other singers.from came singers like Lady GaGa, Brittany Spears, and etc. So just from her came a change for the better and for the worst. For better it brought us into a new age. But sadly it brought many explicit music as well as the good ones(100)
ReplyDeletePreviously in the history of America we have had some bad luck with presidents getting assassinated. But Ronald Reagan was different. On March 31, 1981 the president was almost killed in Washington DC. An assassination attempt took Reagan by surprise, and he was shot in the chest and lived. When he woke up in the hospital he is known for saying that he hopped there were only Republican doctors treating him. This event bowed Reagan's outstanding sense of humor. But more importantly it portrayed a hopeful sense of toughness form the president. I think this really boosted his presidency forward and people respected him more than hey did prior to this attempt. The 1980s, also known as the 80s, contained many interesting cultural events. One of those events were the Winter Olympics. These winter games were held in Lake Placid, New York. The opening ceremony was on February 13, 1980. The main achievement of these games was the monumental Miracle on Ice, when the amateur US ice hockey team defeated the Soviet Union's professional all star team in the semi final game. And then we won the gold medal in hockey over Finland. 79 I do not think these were the first Winter Olympic Games hosted in the US, but they were for sure monumental in the 80s and even now looking back on it. Iran-Iraq war began on September 22, 1980. It is also widely known as the First Persian Gulf war. The protracted war between these neighboring Middle Eastern countries resulted in at least half a million casualties and several billion dollars’ worth of damages, but no real gains by other side. Started by Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein in September 1980, the war was marked by indiscriminate ballistic-missile attacks, extensive use of chemical weapons and attacks on third-country oil tankers in the Persian Gulf. Although Iraq was forced on the strategic defensive, Iran was unable to reconstitute effective armored formations for its air force and could not penetrate Iraq’s borders deeply enough to achieve decisive results. ReplyDeleteIn one of the most dramatic upsets in Olympic history, the underdog U.S. hockey team, made up of college players, defeats the four-time defending gold-medal winning Soviet team at the XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. On Friday afternoon, February 22, the American amateurs and the Soviet dream team met before a sold-out crowd at Lake Placid. The Soviets broke through first, with their new young star, Valery Krotov, deflecting a slap shot beyond American goalie Jim Craig’s reach in the first period. Midway through the period, Buzz Schneider, the only American who had previously been an Olympian, answered the Soviet goal with a high shot over the shoulder of Vladislav Tretiak, the Soviet goalie.(122)

One political event from this era is the election and presidency of our 40th president, Ronald Reagan. President Ronald Reagan served from 1981-1989. During his presidency, Reagan was shot by an attempt of an assassin. The president managed to pull through and survive this horrific event 69 days after he took office. Luckily the president recovered quickly, and resumed back to his normal duties. The President also helped end the Cold War through his ideas of laser defense to protect against possible future missile attacks from the Soviets. This idea never came to be, because of the Soviets' surrender soon after he revealed this idea of his. (108)
ReplyDeleteOne cultural event of this decade is the death of the beloved former Beatles member, John Lennon. Earlier in the day on one day in December of 1980, he was signing autographs for his fans. However, little did he know that his assassin was one of the fans in which he gave his autograph to. His assassin was Mark David Chapman. Mark Chapman was an absolutely obsessed fan of Lennon's. John Lennon died that day at the ripe age of 40. During the attack, he was heading to his home from the recording studio alongside his wife when he was shot. (101)

ReplyDeleteIn 1981 John Hinckley, Jr.shot President Ronald Reagan outside the Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C. just after the president had addressed the Building and Construction Workers Union of the AFL-CIO. Hinckley was armed with a .22 revolver with exploding bullets and he was only ten feet away from Reagan when he began shooting. Fortunately, he was bad at shooting and most of the bullets did not explode like they were supposed to. Hinckley’s first shot hit press secretary James Brady and other shots wounded a police officer and a Secret Service agent. The final shot hit Reagan’s limo and then ricocheted into the President’s chest. Thankfully the bullet didn't kill him.(111)

The song "We Are The World" was a benefit single for victims of famine in Africa. It raised over $60 Million, which was distributed to Ethiopia, Sudan, and other impoverished countries. This all-star charity single was inspired by Band Aid, the British group Bob Geldof put together. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song, and Quincy Jones produced it in the year 1985. A man named Kragen asked Quincy Jones to produce, and Jones enlisted Michael Jackson. Richie got Stevie Wonder involved, and from there, word got out and many members of the music industry signed on to help. The project from conception to recording took about a month.(109)
One political event during 1983 was Reagan’s attempt to help defend our nation from a nuclear attack. The plan is commonly known as “Star Wars.” One of the main reasons Reagan proposed the plan was because the Cold War was going on, and this could help give America a leg up. The defense system would be located in space near earth, and whenever the system would sense a missile threat towards the United States, a beam would hit the missile, eliminating the threat. This defence system is a great idea, but unfortunately it was way ahead of its’ times technology.

One cultural event of the 1980s was how to deal with AIDS. The Center for Disease Control finally recognized AIDS as an Sexually Transmitted Disease in 1981. The government was already trying to figure of how to deal with the new Gay Right movement, because before the 80s there was really no talk of such things; people kind of just ignored the Gay Rights issue. When the people found out about AIDS and how it was most common in homosexual men, people began to oppose homosexuals even more than they had been. The American people were uneducated on how the disease was transmitted, so they avoid any and all contact with homosexuals in fear of catching the disease.

In the 1980’s the iraq- Iran war began. This occurred on September 22, 1980 and was also known as the first Persian gulf war. Sticky notes were invented as well and are also very much used to this day. Video taping movies and video cameras became big in the 80’s and became a major source of entertainment. Oprah Winfrey Show began to air and was very popular as it is today. (110)
At the 1980 Winter Olympics something amazing happened. Something known as “The Miracle on Ice”. The US Hockey team of college students is up against the Professional team from the Soviet Union, who beat the US team 10-3 two weeks prior. However that night things played out very differently. After the first period the starting goalie for the Soviets was taken out of the game, shaking the whole team up. The US team beat the Soviets 4-3 at Lake Placid, New York. This was a huge victory not only because we hadn’t beaten the Soviets in 20 years, but also because of the current cold war against communism. This victory was more than a Hockey game, it was a victory over communism. (122)
ReplyDeleteOn January 28, 1986 the NASA shuttle Challenger did not take off into space as planned. 73 seconds into the launch the spaceship exploded killing all of its passengers. Christa McAuliffe, Gregory Jarvis, Judy Resnik, Dick Scobee, Ronald McNair, Michael Smith and Ellison Onizuka were all killed in the explosion. Christa McAuliffe was the only member on board who wasnt an astronaut. She was a school teacher picked by NASA for the “Teacher in Space” program. This was the fist time the United states had lost a space vehicle with crew on board and it shocked everyone. Many NASA engineers got together to figure out why the explosion happened and make sure that it never happened again. (117)
There are many cultural events that happened in the 1980s. One cultural event that happened was AIDS. It influenced the population in many ways. One such way is that it changed the way we viewed gay people. Because AIDS was such a terrible disease, people did not want to be gay, even though it was not only gay people who got it. This led to a lot of discrimination against gay people. The ignorance of this virus caused it to to be called GRID. This means Gay Related Immune Deficiency. People also did not want to have sex because of how bad the disease is. It influenced our culture by how deadly it was. (114)
ReplyDeleteThe Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989. It was the Wall that separated east Germany and west Germany . He purpose of the Wall was to keep fascists from west Germany from entering east Germany and undermining the socialist state. Or at least that was the official purpose . It actually served as a deterrent for immigration between east Germany and west Germany. At least 171 people were killed trying to get over the Wall. More than 5,000 people from east Germany defected to the west. The Berlin Wall will forever serve as a symbol of Communism and and the Cold War. (101)
One political event during the 1980’s was the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan. The shooter’s name was John Hickley. The shooter was a phycopath who was trying to find a way to become a national public figure to gain attention and impress a girl that he had an obsession for. For a long time he had stalked Carter but later turned his attention to Reagan. He was declared not guilty after his trial on reason of insanity. James Brady was killed in the attack and Ronald Reagan was injured by a ricochet bullet. The president soon recovered and did not have to hand power to his vice.

There were many important events that took place during the 1980’s. An important cultural event in the US during the 1980’s was the first case of AIDS appearing in the US. People were ignorant of the disease and how it was transmitted until the death toll started rising. The disease was most common among. Gay men which caused the public to extremely dislike them. It wasn’t until the 1990’s that the death toll for the disease started to decrease, however, the number of cases increased. AIDS was present in the US during the early 70’s however it was very uncommon and may have been overlooked or misdiagnosed.

When people are asked to give the first three things that come to their minds when they think of the 80s they will probably say brick phones horrible fashion and Ronald Reagan’s presidency (mostly his first one). Ronald Reagan was a key proponent of the 80s he was a celebrity that went into politics beating his opponent, jimmy carter, in 44 states. Even after he was shot he still had his same sense of humor and charisma to push forward in his precedency. In his second term he was not as popular because she showed signs of Althstimers disease. Overall he was a great president and a main role in the 80s. (112)
ReplyDeleteA cultural event in the 80s was the AIDS epidemic. Originally thought to only be transmitted in the Gay Community it was later to be discovered that everyone can get it. No one really knew how the disease was transmitted people thought that it was contagious just like the flu to where you shouldn’t be in the same room as someone with aids. Later they discovered that it can only be transmitted sexually but at the time there was mass paranoia on how one could get the disease and how it could be cured. Famous athlete, Magic Johnson, tested positive for HIV which later leads to AIDS if left untreated. (113)

my cultural event was the spread of aids. The 1980s were plagued with the fear of aids. nobody in the 1980s knew what was going on with that. They were scared about the virus and didn't really know what to do about it because they had not had time to do a whole lot of research about it. One major cultural figure in the 80s who got it was the point guard for the Los angles lakers, Magic Johnson. Magic Johnson was a big deal back then and when he contracted the virus, the public freaked. It would be equivalent to Lebron James getting the virus now.
ReplyDeleteMy political war was the war in Iraq. This war is also referred to as the Iraqi war. This war was over oil and power. Iraq attacked Kuwait and America had to step in. The leader of Iraq was named Suddam Heusen. He would end up becoming someone who would evade the United States military for years and be labeled as a terrorist. He did gas attacks on his own people. The war would be won by the U.S.. This war would cost our country billions to fight in. These conflicts eventually led into the Persian gulf war. This war would only last from august of 1990 to February on 1991. The Iran war would end on August 20, 1988
In the 1980s so many important political things happened like someone trying to kill President Reagan. The Iraqi and Iran war started and the final one was that of the “miracle on ice.” This event happened during the 1980 winter Olympics. After we protested the Summer Olympics that was in Moscow Russia. The United States held the winter Olympics. The Soviet union held the title the best hockey team in the world. When the 1980s Olympic games came along. The Russians team was for time gold medal for ice hockey and this was the greatest upset in sports history. This game was to determine who is going to the finals. The United States beat the great Soviet union team four to three. The went to beat Finland in the finals. This was that the second time the United States won a gold medal in ice hockey.(146).
ReplyDeleteThe cultural events of the 1980s was very important for years to come. Many great TV shows ended was started in the 80s. Like that of cheers ended in the 80s, as well as Doctor Who. One of the greatest shows that started in the 80s was that of the Cosby show. The Cosby show started in 1984 and ended in 1992. It was great comical family show that lasted eight years and still is shown on TV today. It and might not have been as popular as chips that started in 1977 but still in the hearts of many Americans. It ended because it was getting old and Bill Cosby was 54 years old and was very rich, he was as well as author. (125)
I did my political event on the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Ronald Reagan was a Hollywood movie star actor and loved to act like he was in a movie. Ronald Reagan just loved to be able to be social with other people whether it was an important thing or not. After Reagan had become president, he wanted to change America. later on in his presidency people had looked up to Reagan as a pretty good president. One day Reagan was on his way back waving at people and stuff like that on his way back into his motorcade to head to wherever he was going. John Hickley Jr. shot at him from the crowd and not only injured Reagan but several other people like an officer and I believe the secretary. People thought that Reagan was going to die immediately but he didn't. He somehow survived and went on with life. Reagan changed up some things after his attempted assassination but in the end he was still a really good president. (171 words)
ReplyDeleteThe cultural event that I picked was when the Simpsons show debuted in the late 1980s. The simpsons was a family type show but apparently turned very bad and inappropriate over the years. And to this day the Simpsons show is currently the longest running show right now on television. The show had characters like Bar, Homer, Homer's wife, and Bart's sisters and other people that eventually became known in the show. The purpose of the Simpsons show I think is basically stating in reality that people can do what they want and that the rules mean nothing and that people should just live a crazy dangerous life. Basically, they are saying that it is a free world to do whatever you want to do and that it is your choice whether you want to do it or not and that nothing should hold you back from that.
