  1. One cultural event in the 1990s was Hurricane Andrew. It killed 61 people and left 250,000 people homeless. It was also one of the costliest hurricanes in history with an estimated $27 billion in damage. The hurricane was on August 24, 1992. It especially hit hard in Miami, where 125,000 homes were destroyed or damaged. It was only the third hurricane to hit the United States as a category 5 storm. The hurricane had over 165 mile per hour winds. After the hurricane hit, 6,000 Army troops and 1,000 Marines arrived to help. It also had lasting effects on the economy for many years. (104)

The bombing of the World Trade Center was a political event in the 1990s. The bomb exploded on February 26, 1993 at 12:18 pm. It killed 6 people, injuring more than 1,000. There were 6 suspects that were convicted of directly participating in the bombing. The bomb made a hole that created a 200 by 100 feet hole that was a few stories deep. The bomb was in a truck parked in a garage beneath the World Trade Center. Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahmen was credited for the involvement in the large terrorist plot. The World Trade Center did not re-open until March the 29th of that year. (106)

  2. OJ Simpson, was found not guilty to the accusation of killing his wife. Many people thought that our court system was currupt because they believed there was enough evidence to prove that OJ killed his wife. After he was found not guilty his wife’s family tooo him to a civil court and he was found guilty to both murders. And due to the pain and suffering her caused the families he had to give each family around 33 million, which is equivalent to 51 million in today’s market. So many people were relieved that he was found guilty of the murder in the civil court.(106)

Music was a big part of the 90s. If you ask anyone from the 90s they will tell you that what they listened to was actual music and what the kids today listen to is just a bunch of crap that you can’t understand. But when you think about it that is the same thing that there parents were telling them. People just don’t like to see the cultures change, because it is different and they are use to the things that were popular when they were kids(100)

  3. The Oklahoma City bombing happened on April 19, 1995. A truck packed with explosives detonated outside of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building left 168 people dead and several more injured. The buildings entire north wall was completely blown off. Emergency crews raced to Oklahoma from across the country. The blast was set off by anti-government militant Timothy Mcveigh, who was executed from his crimes in 2001. His co-conspirator was sentenced to life in prison. Until the 9/11 event, his bombing was the worst terrorist attack to take place in America. (100)

Originally known as Euro Disney, Disneyland Paris was opened in 1992. Seven hotels and 29 restaurants were built inside of the park. The park planned to serve an estimate of 14,000 people. It aimed for permanent employees rather than seasonal. The park faced Financial difficulties during the European recession. The park was threatened to close due to bankruptcy, but eventually had a turn around in 1995, when new attractions were opened.Space mountain was opened, which brought the attendance to a higher level. The park is still up and running today under the name Disneyland Resort Paris. (100)

  4. One political event is the bombing in Oklahoma City. On the morning of April 19, 1995, an ex-Army soldier and security guard named Timothy McVeigh parked a rented Ryder truck in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. He was about to commit mass murder.Inside the vehicle was a powerful bomb made out of a deadly cocktail of agricultural fertilizer, diesel fuel, and other chemicals. McVeigh got out, locked the door, and headed towards his getaway car. He ignited one timed fuse, then another. At precisely 9:02 a.m., the bomb exploded. Within moments, the surrounding area looked like a war zone. A third of the building had been reduced to rubble, with many floors flattened like pancakes. Dozens of cars were incinerated and more than 300 nearby buildings were damaged or destroyed. 168 souls were lost, including 19 children, with several hundred more injured. (120)

One cultural event is the great Miami hurricane of the 1926. Late as the morning of September 17, less than 24 hours before the category 4 storm's effects would begin in South Florida, no warnings had been issued.  At noon, the Miami Weather Bureau Office was authorized to post storm warnings (one step below hurricane, or winds of 48 to 55 knots).  It was only as the barometer began a precipitous fall, around 11 PM the night of September 17, that Gray hoisted hurricane warnings. The eye of the hurricane, with its period of relative calm, passed over downtown Miami and parts of Cocoanut Grove and South Miami around 6:30 AM on September 18. Residents of the city, unfamiliar with hurricanes, thought the storm was over and emerged from their places of refuge out into the city streets.  People even began returning to the mainland from Miami Beach.  The lull lasted only about 35 minutes, according to Gray, during which the streets became "crowded with people".  The worst part of the hurricane, with onshore southeasterly winds bringing a 10 foot storm surge onto Miami Beach and the barrier islands, began around 7 AM and continued the rest of the morning. 5. Political event: the 911 bombing
On September 11, 1993, 19 middle eastern militants that were apart of the Islamic terrier group al-quaeda. This was planned 3 years prior the attack, but America didn’t see it comin because we were caught up in the scandals of Bill Clinton and his presidency. The militants took over 4 airplanes. The first 2 hit both towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The 2nd plane hit the Pentagon which is a few miles from Washington D.C., Andy luckily the 4th plane didn’t cause any harm to an American. It crash landed in a field in Pennsylvania. After the attack the president, George W. Bush, set out anti-terrist at the for front of his mind set. This attack defined the presidency of George W. Bush. (137)

Culture event: million man march/men’s movement
On October 16, 1995, just about 30,000 African American men, their sons, and grandsons gathered at the Mall in front of the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. This was organized by the leader of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan. The million men march was to send a message to the U.S. Congress that the black male community was strongly against the Conservative Republican majority in Washington. Congressman and president of the NAACP, Jesse Jackson, spoke during this march along with others. Like: Kweisi Mfune, Donald Payne, Dennis archer, Stevie Wonder, Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, amd other spoke during this march. They all mostly spoke about flighting racism in America, unify the nation, and to take responsibility back to their communities. (135)

  6. The 1990’s was a decade full of important cultural events. One major political event was the largest theft of private property in American history, when two men stole around 500 million dollars worth of paintings from Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts. Around 1 am, the two men, who were dressed as police officers, knocked on the door of the museum and claimed they were responding to a disturbance. The two “police officers” then handcuffed the two security guards in the Museum, and took them to the basement. The men then proceeded to steal the 500 million dollar paintings. The men were never caught, and the paintings are still missing to this day.

The 1990’s was also an era of many important political events. One of which was the June 1, 1990 chemical weapons treaty. At a summit in Washington, D.C., U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev sign a historic agreement to end production of chemical weapons and begin the destruction of both nations’ sizable reserves of them. Inspectors from each country would watch as both countries destroyed 80 percent of their own chemical weapons arsenals. At this point in time, many countries around the world were in possession of the technology to construct chemical weapons. Leaders of both nations hoped this treaty would discourage smaller countries from constructing and using their own chemical weapons.

  7. In 1998-1999 President Bill Clinton was accused of having sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky, this is know as the the Lewinsky scandal. Lewinsky was a 22 year old White House intern at this time. These relations took place form 1995-1997, and were brought to light in 1998. Clinton was televised saying that he did not have sexual relations with this woman. But soon he was charged with perjury and later impeachment by the US House of Representatives in 19988. These charges were taken down after a 21 day Senate Trial. This scandal took place while Lewinsky was an intern at the White House. (105)

Also in 1999 2 teens students killed 13 other students and teachers at Columbine High School. This known today as one of the most widely known school shootings in history. And I think that if thee two killers had access to some of the automatic rifles today, this shooting would have been a lot worse. This shooting took place on April 20, 1999. This was the deadliest school shooting in US History until the recent Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in February of this year took its place. This school massacre started gun controls riots and people demanding stricter gun laws. A library was built as a memorial of those killed. (105)

  8. My cultural event of the 1990s is the Hubble space telescope which is the 1st mission to be launched as part of the Great Observations program. HST was the first telescope designed to be visited in space by astronauts and have repairs performed. Its upgraded equipment has allowed HST to viewing black holes. Planets, stars and other astronomical phenomenon. HST’s communication pipeline goes through the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, then down to the ground station in White Sands, New Mexico, and then to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The STSI in Baltimore, Maryland processes the raw data into pictures.words100

  9. My political event of the 90s is on the budget crisis of 1995-1996 which was when the House of Representatives under speaker Newt Gingrich and the administration of President Bill Clinton quarreled over apportionments. The failure of the House and Clinton to pass a continuing budget resolution to apportion temporary funds forced a closure of most non-essential United States Government offices for several weeks. They argue over Medicare, education, the environment, public health in the 1996 federal budget. The government shut down after Clinton vetoed the spending bill the Republican Party controlled Congress sent him causing shut downs to non-essential services. 101

The 1992 Los Angeles riots, also known as the Rodney King riots, the South Central riots, the 1992 Los Angeles civil disturbance, the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest, and the Battle of Los Angeles, were a series of "riots, lootings, arsons, and civil disturbances" that occurred in the county of Los Angeles, California in April and May of the year 1992. "The unrest" began in South Central Los Angeles on April 29, after a trial jury found four officers of the Los Angeles Police Department not guilty for usage of excessive force in the arrest and beating of Rodney King, which had been videotaped and viewed by tons ofpeople in TV broadcasts. The rioting spread throughout the Los Angeles area rapidly, as thousands of people rioted over a six day period following the announcement of the verdict.(137)

The 1995 Chicago heat wave was a heat wave which led to 739 heat related deaths in Chicago over a short period of five days. Most of the victims of the heat wave were elderly poor residents of the city, who could not afford air conditioning and "did not open windows or sleep outside for fear of crime." The heat wave also heavily impacted the wider Midwestern region, with more deaths in both St. Louis, Missouri and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. High pressure traped heat near the ground, forming the heat wave. The temperatures soared to record highs in July with the hottest weather occurring from July 12 to July 16. The high of 106 °F on July 13 was the second warmest July temperature (the warmest was 110 °F on July 23, 1934) since records began at Chicago Midway International Airport in 1928. Nighttime low temperatures were unusually high as well in the upper 70s and lower 80s °F." At the peak of the heat wave, Wisconsin probably would have broken its maximum temperature record of 107 °F had the reporting station been in the same location as it was during the 1930s."(197)

  12. The Hubble Space Telescope launched during Space Shuttle Discovery mission. Which is the beginning of space exploration after the man on the moon. This leads to the discovery of more planets and solar systems other than the Milky Way Galaxy. This will lead us to discover what is out there among the stars. Speaking of stars this will also help discover more stars bigger than our sun. The Hubble Space Telescope was the thing that we could use to see beyond our world. It is a truly magnificent device that we have at our disposal. I am very glad that this was invented.(103)
In 1993, President Clinton signs 'Don't ask, don't tell' into law which prohibits openly gay or bisexual people from serving in the military. This law will eventually be repealed but this law made the gay issue come about. So this lead to their being protests about the issue and eventually get to the issues that we are dealing with today with that same issue. This gay problem needs to be solved we do not need this in our country we need to all get along so we can have peace. This is really important thing that needs to be discussed.(100)

  13. One political event that happened during the 1990’s was the Lewinsky Sex Scandal. Bill Clinton was accused of having sexual relations with his 22 year old intern working at the White House. During the trial Clinton was found guilty but he still claimed he did not have sexual relations with her and he was then guilty of perjury. A co-worker of Lewinsky has recorded some of their calls and Lewinsky confessed and admitted to having sex with him on 9 different occasions, with some of those being while Hillary Clinton was still in the White House. While all this was happening it took our county’s focus away of what was happening overseas.

  14. one political event from the 1990s would be the Gulf War. Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, ordered the invasion and occupation of Kuwait in August 1990. Alarmed by these actions, fellow Arab powers, called on the United States and other Western nations to intervene. Hussein defied United Nations Security Council demands to withdraw from Kuwait by mid-January 1991, and the Persian Gulf War began with a massive U.S.-led air offensive known as Operation Desert Storm. After 42 days of attacks by the allied coalition, U.S. President George H.W. Bush declared a cease-fire on February 28. By that time, most Iraqi forces in Kuwait had either surrendered or fled. Though the Persian Gulf War was initially considered an unqualified success for the international coalition, simmering conflict in the troubled region led to a second Gulf War,known as the Iraq War that began in 2003. One cultural event that happened in the 1990s was the rising population in movies. The 1990s brought some awe inspiring movies like we’ve never seen before. And people rewarded movie makers with record-breaking sales. Titanic became the most successful movie ever, with sales well over $300 million. Jurassic Park pulled down similar numbers during its epic run. Some favorite cult classics were from the 1990s. Movies like Pulp Fiction, Se7en, 12 Monkeys, and Natural Born Killers. Violence went way over the top. So did special effects. For the first time, computer animation started to look realistic. And he was found not guilty ,but he also had 2 other charges with this case perjury and obstruction under oath. He was found not guilty with those charges as they didn’t have 2/3 vote to take him out and they got half for obstruction but not enough to kick him out of office. With the perjury he had 1/3 to impeach not enough but the the obstruction was the hard one as he had half of the senate vote guilty and not guilty (100)

  17. One really big political event in the 1990s was the Operation Desert Storm. The main opposing force against the United States was the former dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussein. This operation all started when Hussein decided to move his army into the area of Kuwait. Oil was a problem for America all through the last few decades leading up into the 2000s, and Kuwait supplied the U.S. with oil, so whenever Iraqi forces moved into that territory America became worried. Saudi Arabia was also threatened when Iraq was in the Kuwait territory, and since they controlled oil as well this made the U.S. even more on edge. America’s president decided to send troops to Saudi Arabia. Hussein would not leave the territory so the U.S. attacked the Iraqi army with bombs. Operation Desert Shield changed to Desert Storm on that night.

There were 15 deaths in the shooting and there were 24 people who were not killed from the shooting but were not killed. The two shooters had fully automatic weapons and just swept america like they swept the school. The shooters were two boys named Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. They were two teens who were outcasts. These kids would affect the nation by spurting an epidemic of school shooting. Also this sparked a movement of gun control laws.

The cultural event that i chose was the end of the cold war. this was great for the united states because, it was the end of the war. This war was the end to the hysteria of a nuclear war and would clear the conscience of lots of Americans in homes across the nation. this was also a way for Europe to unite again. This was the end of the soviet era and was a huge win for the United States. The term cold war means that there was no actual live fighting happening.

One major cultural event that took place in the 90s was the Persian Gulf war. This was the fastest war that America has won. It took approximately one month to liberate Kuwait of the Iraqi soldiers who invaded Kuwait for their oil. The countries around Iraq feared that if they took Kuwait and controlled the oil they would become exponentionally more powerful and wealthy. Countries begged for help so the US jumped in and took Kuwait back in around 40 days. Many people now name this war Operation Desert Storm because that was the name of the operation that led the US strategically into Kuwait. (107)
